Again Jesus said, “Peace be with you. As the

Father has sent me, so I am sending you.”

2012-2013 was the year that we were “Sent”.

We spent the whole year learning what it

means to be a community that fulfills Jesus

words in John 20:21. We allowed the Spirit of

God to continue to challenge our hearts to see

the world right around us as a field ‘white for

harvest’.

So, in a year where we saw more of our people

participate in mission experiences (traveling to

Malawi, building homes and sharing their faith

in Mexico, joining the Advent Conspiracy, caring

for Marines, and launching of the Community

Resource Center), we will likely look back at this

past year as the year where we also took the

next step forward in deepening faith while we

were “sent”.

In the fall of 2012, we welcomed Rev. Candie

Blankman as the new Associate Pastor of

Discipleship. With over two decades of ministry

experience including eight years as a senior

pastor, Candie is the most qualified and

experienced pastor this church has ever called

(including yours truly). God certainly heard our

prayers. Pastor Candie immediately engaged

our congregation in a conversation about

discipleship and the need to get ‘plugged in’.

Small groups were energized, new studies

formed, a foundation was laid for the next level

of discipleship for a congregation that yearns

to not only make a difference, but truly BE

different.

This year we also solidified our pastoral staff

for the long term by affirming Charlie

Campbell’s call as Pastor of Worship. After ten

years of serving the church including two years

as the Executive Director of Worship and two

years as the Designated Pastor of Worship,

Charlie was installed along with Candie as

Associate Pastors. In a world where many

churches struggle to find experienced and

capable pastors, we have an abundance of

riches. We have new members joining our

church at a very encouraging rate. Our

membership topped 1500 and we have begun

to even have more adult baptisms.

For me, however, I will remember this year as

the year where a whole new group of younger

leaders stepped up and agreed to help lead

this “sent” community. We now have some of

the youngest and most engaged Deacons and

Elders in our history. We also have younger

members going on mission trips and bringing

vitality and creativity to our whole church

community.

As Jesus continues to send us into the world, it is

a genuine joy to be sent together.

Grateful to serve alongside you,

Tod Bolsinger

The Prayer Chain, Visitation, Meal Team,

Prayer Quilters, Super Seniors, JOY Lunch,

Cancer Support Group and Stephen Ministry

served our congregation and community well

during the year under the leadership of Sue

Haffely, elders Jim Ritchie and Marylee

Sanders, and dedicated lay leaders and

volunteers. In addition, the Prayer Room and

Caring Cart on Sundays created additional

access for our SCPC family to get counsel,

prayer or set up with a Stephen Minister.

The Give It Away Fund helped various needs in

our congregation and community with $17K this

fiscal year. Besides disbursing food vouchers,

gas vouchers and bus passes to walk-ins, Sue

Haffely also partnered with iHOPE and Family

Assistance Ministries related to rental

assistance and other medical or practical needs

for individuals and families who they

determined to be credible. Sue also partnered

with Stephen Ministry and CRC therapists when

referrals were needed.

Sharon Davidson served her first term as

Coordinator of Stephen Ministry along with

expert co-leaders Vi Ritchie and Marsha

Easterday. Ten new Stephen Ministers

completed the annual Training Class. Cyndi

Martin took over the Meal Ministry for Diane

Olsen, operating the ministry efficiently for

families in need through the utilization of the

website, takethemameal.com.

Becky Barnes served as the new coordinator

for JOY Lunch, four lunches being held at

significant holiday intervals. A great new

volunteer team assisted Becky in ramping up

the quality of JOY Lunch, bridging the gap

with Cabaret Clemente finishing their run last

year. With many of our senior folks relaying

that they don’t drive at night anymore, this

event is a great fit.

Al Sloan continued to monitor the Super Seniors

group, recruiting advocates/sponsors for our

approximate 30 homebound or semi-

homebound for visitation and disbursement of

gifts like the Christmas poinsettias and Easter

lilies. Through ongoing efforts of Al and Enid

Sloan, the Prayer Chain now has around 300

participants.

ENGAGEMENT

Two New Member classes were conducted in

October, 2012, and May, 2013, resulting in

55 new members being welcomed into our

church family and three baptisms.

The Deacons maintained a strong leadership

role in several ways: manning the Welcome

Cart on Sunday mornings; being mentors and

presenters for New Member Classes; and

serving as Sunday morning greeters. They

were efficient and hospitable in following up

with visitors and coordinating with the new

discipleship team under Pastor Candie

Blankman.

Café Clemente continued to offer a warm

welcome to all with continued oversight by

Suzanne Blevins. We were grateful for all who

baked and served Sunday morning cookies, a

long held tradition at SCPC.

Fourteen members served as deacons this past

year. Tasks accomplished in 2012/2013 are as

follows:

The “Visitor Card” and the “Welcome Cart” –

Deacons are continuing to handle the

Welcome Cart and perform follow-up on all

visitor cards with a phone call (or e-mail) after

we have met the visitor face to face at the

Welcome cart.. Deacons may assist the visitor

with any questions they may have regarding

programs or ministries associated with our

church. More personal needs may be addressed

with more specialized assistance, such as, a

Stephen Minister, etc.

New Member Class – Deacons continue to

assist with each membership class. Classes were

conducted in October, 2012, and May, 2013.

Mentoring and follow-up is the continued goal

for all future classes.

Greeting - Deacons served as greeters on

several occasions for two weeks periods of time

during the past year at the Sunday morning

worship services.

The CD Sermon Ministry – Orders are

continuing to be taken at the ―Welcome Cart

each week before and after the Sunday

services. Several deacons are involved in

duplicating the CD‘s. They can be ordered

online through the SCPC Website, as well. The

CD‘s are duplicated and ready for pickup at

the ―Welcome Cart the following Sunday.

Fewer orders have been received this past year

now that the audio and video are available on

the church website.

Plugged In – Beginning in January, the deacons

began assisting the Discipleship Committee and

Pastor Candie with this campaign. Cards were

collected on the patio after each service. All

congregational members were encouraged to

fill out the card and turn it in to any one of the

folks wearing the “silly hat” (as it has become

known) on the patio. This is a continuing ongoing

effort to encourage members of the

congregation to become engaged in the life of

our church.

The Deacons Fund (known as the ―Give It

Away Fund) – This fund continues to be

available to help families or individuals that

may require financial assistance. Many times,

we partner with F.A.M. (Family Assistance

Ministry) and IHOPE when helping folks with

their needs.

Places to Serve & Belong List – A listing of our

church ministries continues to be incorporated

onto the church website.

The highlights of our year focused on Milestones,

Sunday school and Special Events.

Our staff and lay leaders took ownership of each

Milestone and engaged our families and children as

they deepened their spiritual formation. Preschool

parents learned a tradition of Blessing their Children

and the kindergarten families practiced praying. Our

first grade parents were taught to lead their children

in the practice of Holy Communion. Our three year

olds, second and fifth graders were given a gift of

Bibles for their age level. The third and fourth graders

finished their year with a Bible Jeopardy Game with

family and friends.

Our Sunday school teachers continue to give their time

and talents to invest in our children from preschool

through fifth grade. Even though we had spots unfilled

all year, our parents stepped up and filled in our

first/second combo and fifth grade classes as needed.

We averaged about 75 kids each Sunday. Our

preschool classes continue to grow. Our need for

teachers at this age level increases with our

attendance growing.

Special events and alternative children’s programming

provide an opportunity to invite families to engage

and empower their children in their faith formation.

These included:

• Advent Mix It Up--this year we did a family

“La Posada” with Jr. High and High School

and leading stations. The petting zoo was a

big hit.

• Christmas Eve Pageant was the perfect event

to invite families looking to get plugged in,

plus our faithful Herod and wise men.

• Holy Week children’s alternative program

included a Seder and many stations during the

week with hands-on activities to deepen Bible

knowledge.

• Bible Jeopardy is a Milestone for third and

fourth graders. We had our largest turnout

with 18 participants. The teachers lead the

event and prizes were awarded for highest

scores. All enjoyed a meal catered by

Carbonara’s.

• The year ended with VBS, which represents

months of planning and participation from

staff, elders, 80 plus volunteers. More than

200 kids learned to “Stand Strong for God.”

• We had a smaller group of kids attending

camp this year at both winter and summer

camp than anticipated. Including counselors

we sent 9 campers to winter camp and 16

campers to summer camp. Talking with many

families, they were taking personal vacations

this summer.

Diana Castruita

Director of Children’s Ministries

The health and vitality of Middle School Ministry are

at an all-time high during my time here at SCPC. One

main metric for success is in our small groups. If each

small group is healthy and thriving, if they are

building relationship through regular engagement and

study of God's presence in their lives, if they are

growing where growth may be needed, and when we

see the same faces, then we know things are going

well. This year all of that happened and

more. During Pura Vida 43 students learned about

the Biblical worldview on sexuality, while their parent

class averaged around 35. New students to the

church or to our program easily meshed and stayed

connected not only because of our great leaders but

perhaps even more because of the incredible

Christian welcome and witness from their fellow

students. The students raised over $300 in change for

Eden Reforestation Project, cared for women at Isaiah

House (a shelter for abused women in Santa Ana),

visited and chatted with elderly at the Capo Care

Center, built a house in Baja, and did all of these with

an intergenerational flavor. Our main theme for the

year was "Mission and Discipleship" (following the

SCPC community as a whole). With this weighty

theme and the response we received from our students

we were affirmed in our thinking that students care

about theology that matters.

As we reflect, the school year of 2012-2013 for the

High School students here at San Clemente

Presbyterian Church was a year of spiritual depth

in their lives. We’ve saw deep spiritual growth,

strong desire in students to take on leadership here

at the church and in their schools. Students were

extremely hungry for genuine community in youth

group. Planned events included worship, games,

sermons, and small groups mid-week during

“Refuge,” as well as Forest Home winter camp and

Emerald Cove summer camp. One major highlight

would be our time at Forest Home winter camp. We

had two students make a first-time commitment in

their relationship with the Lord and they have been

growing in that relationship all year long. This

upcoming school year of 2013-2014 holds a lot of

promise and excitement, as we see students and

adult leaders longing to grow and invest their time

and gifts into our High School Ministry.

Casey D. Hawes

Director High School Ministries

Over the past 12 months a team of eight individuals

with a passion for discipleship has developed and is

working through a number of initiatives designed to

encourage all who claim to be Christians to spiritual

maturity as followers of Christ. Our vision is that

wherever groups of Christians meet including small

groups, ministry teams, church committees and Bible

studies, intentional steps are taken to bring in the

elements of discipleship-prayer, focus on the Word,

personal relationships, spiritual encouragement,

accountability and leadership development. One of

our initiatives has been developing discipleship

opportunities for new members by working with

Deacons to encourage new members to engage in

the life of the church sooner.

Expanding and enhancing our small group program

has been another initiative worked on by a

leadership team of three individuals who are

focused on overall small group coordination and

bringing elements of discipleship into existing

groups, while at the same time planning expansion

of new groups. The committee has been working on

discipleship leadership training, and we look

forward to working with the new associate pastor

of adult discipleship as to how to best implement

training initiatives.

We also continue to look for fresh ways to work

with our Hispanic ministries to emphasize the unity

we value as the Body of Christ. Finally each of our

committee members is in some way involved in

discipling others in our spheres of influence.

Carla Freeman

Ruling Elder, Discipleship

In an effort to be more connected, this year we

stopped using the name Mision CASA, and simply

call ourselves San Clemente Presbyterian Church.

When speaking with people, we do specify that we

are a Spanish language service, but we also want

people to see that we are part of the church, and

not a separate entity. It has been a busy year, and

challenging at times, but we continue to see God at

work in the lives of people. Our numbers haven’t

increased tremendously, but that has allowed me

the time to work with individuals and dedicate time

to leadership training. We had our first family

camping trip this year, and it was a great time to

connect and engage in meaningful conversation with

some of our leadership. In addition, we also had 7

congregants of the Hispanic ministry become

members of SCPC. We had a good number of kids

go to Emerald Cove this year, which was not only

fun, but they came back wanting to learn more

about God. We implemented “Date Nights” for all

the couples in our ministry, in an effort to work

together to strengthen our marriages and families.

We have had a few people come forward and

start serving as Sunday school teachers, and ushers.

Overall, it has been a year of Spiritual growth and

building relationships. I believe God is preparing

the leaders to do his work, which is exciting and

such a blessing to see.

We developed three questions to help us focus on being disciples in our Missional Service. 1. What character and capacities of Jesus does God need to work in me during this mission event? 2. How does God need to work in our team to help us connect in a God-honoring way during this mission event? 3. What do I anticipate God doing through me during this mission event? Our Missional Service included the following. • Being disciples in “our” Jerusalem: -Each month a team fed the hungry through

Welcome INN. -A team led worship at the State Park over the summer. -We were involved with our Marine Ministry through special meals, greeting them when they returned from deployment, providing them with Welcome Home Bags, hosting a baby shower and tutoring at San Onofre School. -Our members served with Family Assistance Ministry by donating food each month, participating in the Hunger Walk, joining in the San Clemente Trail Run and holding a concert to raise funds. • Being disciples in “our” Judea: -Through our Baja Ministries we built two homes in El Niño, threw a Christmas party for our partners, worked on projects for our Hospice partner and interacted with children at our partner Orphanage. • Our members supported Rancho Sordo Mudo by

donating food and serving on two mission trips.

• Being disciples around the world: -We celebrated our 8-year partnership with the Y-Malawi Fair. -We held the final fund raiser for wells in Malawi since the need for clean water in Nkhoma has been met. -We filled about 350 Operation Christmas Child boxes. -We learned from our mission partners who visited and how God is at work in Ukraine –

Nita Hanson; sensitive countries through Bible translation – Janet and Paul McLarren; Pakistan – Paul and Pat Stock. -We gave 249 gifts to 97 ministries totaling $48,685 through Advent Conspiracy and Giving Tree. -Kim Yim’s book signing for Refuse to Do Nothing reminded us of modern day slavery. • Learning how to be disciples wherever God calls

us: -Four young women attended Urbana Student Missions Conference and made commitments to serve the Lord. -A dozen members helped lead and attended the Los Ranchos Presbytery Missions Summit. -Forty-three members highlighted their ministries at the Inside Outside Missions Fair. The worship team, lead by Rev. Charlie Campbell,

Associate Pastor of Worship, continued to explore

the broader concept of worship and how it takes

place within our congregation and how leaders can

guide, enrich, and inspire the worship experience.

Because we are inclined to be more “audience” than

“actors” when we go to church, it is incumbent on us

to continually look for ways to enable our

congregation to understand and experience the fact

that worship is something we all “do” together.

We offer three Sunday services; a more traditional

9:00 a.m. service, a more contemporary service at

10:45 a.m., and our service in Spanish beginning at

12:45 p.m. The Sanctuary Choir, the Isaiah Chorus

and the Sounds of Brass Bell Choir participate each

month in the morning services under the leadership

of Sarah Norris, with Nesa Anderson directing the

bells. John Zechiel continues to accompany the

singing groups, play with the instrumentalists, and

assist Charlie with charting as well as providing

piano and organ solos.

Lay leaders continue to be a vital, integral and

indispensable component of our worship services as

leaders, musicians, greeters, ushers, communion

servers, and those who supply and display the

bread and wine for our weekly communion. We

continue to seek new ways to maximize these roles

as we seek to increase members’ engagement in

the life of the church.

In 2012 we continued the long tradition at SCPC’s

annual Christmas Concert for our own church family

and for our community. The concert tells the story of

Christmas in music and the spoken word.

Under the leadership of Brieann Glass, Worship

Director and with the support of both staff and laity,

we continued to offer a series of monthly Vespers

evenings from October 2012-June 2013. These

evenings of prayer and reflection, offer an

opportunity to grow spiritually through a variety of

multi-medium practices and disciplines. The highlight

of our Vespers series was “Way of the Cross” during

Holy Week that was attended by over 500 people

from our church and the greater San Clemente

community. It offered an artistic, interactive, visual

presentation of the Passion Story.

The Monday Night Gathering is an experiment in

church planting that developed this year under the

leadership of Brieann Glass, Rev. Ron Eckert, Parish

Associate, and other church members. We consider

ourselves part of a bigger movement in the PCUSA

called “1001” – 1001 worshipping communities. This

effort is focused on people who wouldn’t ever walk

through our doors on a Sunday morning, yet want to

talk about their faith, find Jesus interesting, and are

in search of authentic community. The Monday Night

Gathering is a consistent group of 10 people who

gather weekly as they continue to experiment and

pay attention to what God desires to do in and

through them.

During the year, SCPC, led by lay leader Steve

Canfield, the President of the Sanctuary Choir,

hosted three concert events.

• October 13, 2012 featured the Kiev

Symphony Orchestra & Chorus attended by

500 church and community members

• April 28, 2013 featured the “Amazing

Wesley Brothers” actors & singers telling the

story of the music of Charles & John Wesley

• June 21, 2013 featured our Sanctuary

Choir, Isaiah Chorus, and Sounds of Bronze

Bell Choir The complete worship team, under the leadership

and guidance of Rev. Charlie Campbell, includes

Brieann Glass, Director of Worship, Lynda Thomas,

Director of Worship Production, Chance Hazelton,

Director of Technical Production, Sarah Norris,

Director of Choral Ministries, John Zechiel, Worship

Accompanist, and Janet Goode, Worship

Administrative Assistant. Ruling Elders currently

The 2013/2014 school year is fast

approaching. We are currently performing our

annual review of the SCPC Preschool Program to

identify areas that need improving, and how we

can continue to support the changing needs of our

children, their families, and the preschool staff.

The past school year brought a couple changes to

our preschool staff. After 8 years as an assistant

teacher, Claudia Ryley left the preschool to

pursue her dream of becoming a paralegal.

Although it was difficult to see her go, we know

the Lord has blessed her and her family with this

full-time position. With Claudia’s departure, Julie

Snyder, a church member and previously Sunday

School Director, joined our preschool staff as an

assistant teacher. Julie and Rebecca Lanford

were teaching partners in the Bluebird Class.

Our current program offers morning sessions five

days a week and an afternoon enrichment Class

(Owls) three days a week. Our afternoon

Enrichment Class has proven to be very popular

with our parents and the children. This class is so

exciting because it provides opportunities for

children to participate in live science, music, and

the arts. Also popular with our preschool families

is our daily Lunch Bunch Program. This is our

Extended Day Program and it is designed to

meet our parents’ need for a longer school day.

It is offered after school each morning. Families

may sign-up for one or two hours each day their

child attends school, and we are able to

accommodate 30 – 40 children per day.

On a daily basis we employee15 staff members

5 days a week, 75 children attend our morning

session and 15 children attend our afternoon

session. Our preschool is able to accommodate

approximately150 families.

As the Preschool Director, I am always amazed at

how quickly times goes by. This year will be my

19th year at the preschool - 9 of them as the

Director. Crystal Bonilla, the Assistant Director will

be going into her 5th year. As the years roll by

we both feel truly blessed to be working at our

home church and in a field we are truly

passionately about.

We are deeply devoted to our critical role in our

church and community, and our preschool staff

continues to thank the Lord as He continues to

care for us and our thriving ministry.

SCPC’s fiscal year ended June 30, 2013, and

somewhat similar to the 2012 fiscal year, it was

another roller coaster ride. For the past fiscal

year our total spending exceeded our giving and

receipts by $67,000 or we ran a small deficit.

Even though $67,000 is quite a bit of money we

say “small” in that our total budgeted giving and

spending is over $2.4 million for SCPC and this

deficit represents just over a 2.5% shortfall. This

deficit is a combination of less giving than

anticipated coupled with unexpected expenses

primarily related to the maintenance and repairs

of our campus. This deficit did reduce our reserves

and essentially used the entire surplus we

generated in the 2011/2012 fiscal year, so that

over the past 24 months SCPC effectively broke-

even or maintained a balanced budget during this

period.

We started out the first five months of the fiscal

year pretty much in line with our budget with both

giving and spending tracking closely. However,

during December we experienced another

sizeable shortfall in our giving very similar to the

prior year where we were over a $100,000 short

through the end of the calendar year. Your

Session studied the situation closely in January and

elected to communicate quickly to the

congregation the need and with the help of staff

and lay leaders orchestrated numerous prayer

sessions to ask that the Lord guide us through the

challenging economic conditions and provide for

us in the best way possible. This tact was much

different than the prior year where Session

instituted a “Ketchup Campaign” to encourage the

congregation to provide. This year we prayed

and messaged, believing that it is God’s will if we

are to be provided for. Through May our deficit

grew larger to over $160,000; however in June

we were blessed with strong giving that helped us

end with only a $67,000 deficit.

During the fourth quarter of our fiscal year while

we were facing the largest deficits of the year,

your Session took the opportunity to reflect on the

realities of our congregational giving in light of

economic, denominational and cultural issues to

look for greater efficiencies in SCPC operations

and structure. Through deep discernment and

broad input Session was able to approve a

2013/2014 budget which projects 3% less giving,

yet which will ensure programs and missions are

maintained at their current levels. As a by-product

of this effort you will be seeing new programs this

Fall to usher in greater congregational

engagement from our over 1,400 members.

Greater engagement we believe will lead to a

stronger commitment to tithe and invest in SCPC.

One of the benefits SCPC was able to realize this

past fiscal year was the ability to refinance the

largest portion of our mortgage debt to a much

lower interest rate. On January 1, 2013 the new

interest rate on $3.7 million of our mortgage

dropped to 2.17% and will remain fixed through

2017. At June 30, 2013 the total amount of

mortgage outstanding is $5,649,000 million with

a blended interest rate of 3.64%. During the past

fiscal year SCPC paid down our mortgage debt

by over $241,000 through monthly amortization,

Legacy gifts and the congregation’s direct

contributions to the Debt Reduction Fund. It should

be noted that over the past fiscal year SCPC did

not receive any Legacy Gifts through estate, trust

or will settlements. This was somewhat surprising

and will be studied further this year to make sure

the congregation is aware of the Legacy benefits.

In past gifts; if undesignated, they have been

primarily utilized for debt reduction and to

supplement unfunded general fund needs.

The Ministry Support team oversees the finances,

information technology, stewardship/legacy,

human resources, building & grounds and legal

matters; providing SCPC with the strong fiduciary

oversight to maintain our ongoing business

operations. This past fiscal year the outside audit

of SCPC financial records and internal controls

reflected an exemplary opinion of SCPC’s

financial operations and high praise for Peter

Sedlewicz, our Business Manager, in maintaining

strong controls and sound record keeping.

Although the 2012/2013 fiscal year showed a

small deficit, SCPC was able to financially

navigate the turbulent year to help accomplish the

greater good of our Lord’s church and keep us

focused on our mission at hand without financial

distractions. The Ministry Support team humbly

thanks all of you that contributed to SCPC through

out the year and answered our prayers of need.

Thank you. The good Lord has provided us a lot,

we are truly blessed.

Yours in Christ,

The Ministry Support Team
