Blues Book ReviewThe .Jazz and BluesLover's Guide to the U.S.Christiane Bird Addison Wesley

BY SHIRlEY OWENSChris Bird's Jazz and Blues Lover'sGuide, is a pocketbook reference and an

historical roadmap. Bird reports on"morethan 900 hot clubs, cooljoints, landmarks, and legends from boogie woogie tobop andbeyond." Bird caught the scenes from coastto coast to find out where's it happening:"As for the blues, theyarereallythriv-ing. Chicago is on fire these days withnearly a dozen first rate clubs smokingseven nights aweek, and ahundred othershappening at least some of the time. St.Louis and Kansas City have strong under-ground blues scenes that are just nowbecoming recognized ...."

Bird gives you first hand informationwith historical highlights ofeach city. Youcan tell that she is amusic lover and enjoysbeing a tourist. I particularly enjoyed show-ing Bird the town and she gave KC and KCBlues Society it's due in her new Jazz andBlues Lover's Guide, just in time for sum-mer travel plans and the Blues Fest sea-wn.

Shirley Owens hosts the "TrafficJam" Blues Hour (4to 5 p.m.) onMondaysand Thursdays, as well as "Mattie andMae" with Suzi Colbert onWednesdays. On April 18, Owens celebrated hertwo year anniversary with the station bythrowing her own "FunRaiser" party at

the Grand Emporium. Dallas band JimSuhler & the Texas Homewreckers wasthe featured band.

The band was composed of AmyRobbins (vocals), Bobby Baranowski(drums), TimNeilley(bass) and Jim Suhler(guitar, vocals). The original TexasHomewreckers was put together in No-vember of 1989. This unit, assembled inApril 1990, put on a solid, no frills, gutbucket performance.

"Love Me With a Feeling" by FreddieKing and "How You Want Your Rollin'Done" by Zuzu Bollin were real crowdpleasers. Dancers filled the floor by thesecond tune. Vocalist AmyRobbins gave agood delivery of "It Hurts Me Too" byElmore James.

    Performance DiaryThe Good Times

Roll in KCMarch 23 -Grand EmporiumDan Doran Band

An over loaded social calendar keptme from getting out much this month.(Beingpopular is such a heavy burden.) Somost of what I did see were area people, beginning and ending with Dan Doran.

    Dan and the Band played the GrandEmporium onMarch 23, their second Sat-urday night there within about a month.....................................There's somethingClt 'UGHT' :;:~tb~~~g~m:u~ri~~( I r n ' ~ " T H E A C . T best in these guys, andthis showfollowed the

pattern. They openedhot and stayed thatway all night. Guitar-

    MUSIC REVIEW istBill Dyewas inrareB Y l A R E B EA R form. He wove a

....................... couple ofincredibly in-tricate lines in his solos in "Benny's Bugle"and "Fat Guy Wiggle."

John Selzer, trumpet, was also hot.Excellent solos in "Wiggle"and "TooMuchWeekend." He also turned in good vocalwork, especially "Weekend" and "Vote forMr. Boogie." Saxophonist Dana Smithstarted a little slow but came on strong atthe end. And Doran was, well, Dan Doran(more below).Apr. 10 -Downtown KCMOCity Council InaugurationI didn't go to the inauguration to heartunes, I went because my day gig requiredit. But you take enjoyment where you findit. In this case it came fromMichael Charlesdoing the "Battle Hymn of the Republic."Charles did a hard driving, funk version ofthe tune that was pure delight. It madethe rest of the day worthwhile.

The reception following the ceremo-nies featured Eddie Baker and the NewBreed Orchestra. From the opening strainsof"Satin Doll"through the end, these guyscan really play. Sonny Kenner turned insome outstanding guitar work, especiallyon a slow blues piece. You sometimes getthe feeling that Kenner is cracking musi-cal jokes for the sake of the band, but itdoesn't matter. The dude can play. So canthe rest of the band.April 11 Grand EmporiumDangerfield McNally

KCBS Jam night with D-MC as host.Dangerfield covers the drums and vocals,John McNally lead guitar and some ofthe6 MAY 1991

vocals. They also feature a second guitar-ist, Dan Bliss, whose attacks are morebiting than McNally's. McNally is a prettytypical blues player, very fluid inhis lines, nothing extremely original but he knowshis way around his axe.The two guitaristscomplemen t each other through their con-trasting styles.

Dangerfield's vocals are real good. The band specializes in medium to uptempo R&B tunes. Did an outstandingversion of"Phonebooth," a bit faster thanthe original with amore insistent rhythm. This is a good band and deserves to beheard.April 12 NightmovesLonnie RayAll-Stars

The All-Stars were performing as atrio this night, and the band's sound wasa bit thin. However, Lonnie Ray is a goodenough guitarist and fronts a trio as well.WifeDebbie onbass was adequate, thoughthe sound could have used a little morebass in the mix. Maybe it was just whereI was sitting.

One of the best things this band doesis singharmony. Lonnie and Debbie blendreal well. Debbie's voice is almost toosweet to be a true blues singer. But withthe proper choiceofmaterial she can coverwhat the Fair Bear referred to as "sneakyblues." The best example was her versionof "St. James Infirmary."

Like Debbie, Lonnie will never be ablues shouter, but he, too,has agoodvoice, good phrasing and a sure sense ofintona-tion. A good band that probably soundsbetter as a quintet.

April 20 - BB's Lawnside BBODan Doran and Bill DyeThis was a goodperformance and a lot

of fun. Dye did some outstanding guitarwork, both conventional electric and steel.Dye can dojust about anything he wantsto with a guitar. Like Guitar George, heknows all the chords in every position allup and downthe neck. Andhis solostylingsrange completely across the field.Heknowshow to build a line as well as anyone. Theguy is just a great guitar player.

Doran's romping, twohanded, pound-ing piano style was well suited to thisforum. Doran is more a harmonic andpercussive player, rather than emphasiz-ing lines. Mostly his lines are to get fromone percussive chording to another, andpeople eat it up. The only weakness thatwas shown all evening is that, occasion-ally, Doran's left hand is part of his solowork, so the duo was left without any realbottom. No big problem though as theyalways came back to it.

This pair has worked together for anumber of years through a number ofbands and it showed. They did quite a fewtunes they do with the band, but the newsetting made them sound, well, new.

A big thanks to Lindsay Shannon, proprietor ofBB's BBQ, for bringing thiskind ofbl ues back around. Ihope things gowell for him and he continues to bringsome interesting duos and small groupsin. It's a challenge for the players and bothfun and educational for the audience.

In this case, as the cliche goes, a goodtime was had by all.
