    A Fest Lool,

Bobby Bland John Mayall Denise laSalleThe Blues & Jazz Fest had over 100,000 in attendance over the two days. Besides thetraffic jams and Saturday's sound difficulties due to an overloaded transformer, theFest set a record as the largest free event inKC history. As at any outdoor fest, especiallythe first ones, there are technical problems and anyone who was behind the scenes priorand/or during the fest know now what, how, and who to avoid in order to put it on nextyear. The big question is will those volunteers be around next year to make thoseadjustments or will it continue on the same course? As the 91 Blues &Jazz Fest volunteers scurried around until at least 3p.m, tryingto get their fest sites setup and in operating order, the blues andjazz stages began ontime and for the most part remained on schedule. A small summer squall erupted on

FEST IVA l REVIEW FROM PAGE 1Sunday but it did not dampen the crowd's enthusiasm. Everyone got down with JohnMayall, turned on, and had "Room toMove." The dark clouds blew away. KCMO policereported no incidents or injuries on either day.

Big surprises happened. On Saturday, Rod Piazza and the Mighty Flyers lefteveryone spellbound. Jimmy Johnson spilled the blues and showed his soul. DeniseLaSalle, all dressed up, got the crowd messed up with her sexyways, LaSalle did cleanup her act for the children in the audience.

Sunday's KC Blues women review with Linda Shell, Earline Owens, and CottonCandy was a smash. Many never knew that KChad some fine women shoutin' the blues.Buddy Guy in between flights, had perfect timing as he sprung into action. Guymanaged to rush the through audience during a guitar solo with KCMO police andsecurity in tow. Arare big surprise was Albert King's appearance in his tux and sheriffbadge tojoin Bobby Bland on stage.Itwas an unpredictable Fest and hopefully w.il l happen again. Next year's Blues& Jazz Fest needs improvement in the overall geographical logistics and the entireplanning, production, and execution.

Lucie of the Draw-Bonnie Raitt"Tangled and Dark" is a nice bouncy songthat has a good trumpet solo by LeeThornberg. Raitt's slide work isn't somucha line as it is notes. "Come to Me" is areggae tune. "One Part Be My Lover" isabout the ambivalence one sometimes

feels in a relationship. "One part be mylover/one part go away." The closer

on the album "All at Once" is over-LUE'- produced and sounds like it wasiJ madeofseveralsongfragments_ I I < , just stuck together."Papa Come Quick" is one

of the best on the album. It has anice country feel with some good

acoustic guitar picking. "Good ManGoodWoman," the duet with McClinton,

ought to be good, but it just sort of laysthere. What's missing? Energy?

Overall this is a decent album, there'sjust nothing that really sets it apart andmakes it special. Raitt fans will like it, I'msure. For myself, I'm glad to have it on therack, but I bet I'll listen toNick of Time alot more often than Luck of the Draw .

Than ks, Vo lu n te e rs lSee you at the Vo lunteer Party, Aug. 12

BY L.M . SM ITHThis album goes under the "muchanticipated" category. After the suc-cess of the Grammy winning Nickof Time album that marked Raitt's come-back, her numerous fans have been ea-gerly awaiting the new effort. Unfortu-nately, the album is a bit disappoint-ing.

There's nothing particularlywrong with the effort. It is inmany ways, more of the same ~when compared to Nick of Time, although the songs are not quite asgood. What it does is point out howstrong an album Time really was.

There is a strong list of guests whoappear on the album, including: DelbertMcClinton, guitar whiz Richard Thomp-son, Bruce Hornsby, Ivan Neville and theTower of Power horn is section. Produc-tion ace Don Was also returns, but some-how the project just never takes off.

Raitt wrote three tunes for the albumand co-wrote one other. She has neverbeen a big songwriter, but a couple aresome of the better tunes on the album.

Performance DiaryWhat a month!AouPle of big shows, talent con-tests and a festival. Let's startwith the shows.June 29 Grand EmporiumMarcia Ball

The place was jammed and Ball hadthe joint a jumping. The six footer with astreak of grey sat behind her Yamaha, long legs crossed, left foottapping out time- ~ ~ ~ ~ while her right legT~ ~ ~ ~ .........._"..,.~.,: "..:'..: :, swung polyrhythmicGAUGHT' counterpoint, punch-~ ing out that rompingtwo-handed piano

EW with her instrumen-MUSIC REVI tal prowess.B y LM. SMITH On "My Mind's.................. Made Up" guitaristSteve Williams turned in some nice slidework. Tenor saxophonist Paul Klempererwas strong all evening long. Both men gotplenty of soloroom. Ball may be the star, but she isn't the show. She only tookabout a quarter of the solos and let theguys have the rest.

Bassist Don Bennett is a standoutwho doesn't stand out. H~ just standsback and plays, but he plays very well. He's been playing with Ball for about tenyears. Drummer Rodney Craig has beenwith the band a couple ofyears. Klempererand Williams have only been with Ballabout a year.

    Marcia Ball, good rockin- Mama!

The band did three tunes off theDreams Come True album, including "GoodRockin' Daddy" done "Kansas City swingstyle." The intro and coda were tight, clipped tutti figures.

The key to Ball's piano prowess is astrong left hand. Plus she knows how tocampbehind her singing and other people'splaying. This is a tight band, and Marciais one heck of a member.July 18 Grand EmporiumDave Koz and Phil Perry

This was a good show. Koz is a finesax/flute player, kind oflike Kenny Gwitha lot more soul. Perry is a big voicedcontemporary R&B singer. I don't knowwho decided these guys should tour to-gether, but it was a good idea.

Koz opened the show. He has a fulltone, even on soprano (both curved andstraight). He's a showman to go with it;dropping to his knees, doing salutes withhis horn, things like that.

"Emily" showed off that Kenny Gsound. "Castle ofDreams, "co-written withhis brother Jeff had a funky bridge thatfeatured some nice tutti work with theguitarist. Koz doesn't do a lot of improvi-sation, but he makes the most of what hedoes do.

The influence of David Sanborn andTom Scott were especially obvious on"Yesterday's Rain." The whole band camedown off the stage and went into theaudience, Koz ending up on a chair. Goodshow piece.

Then Perry took the stage. Not onlydoes he have a big voice, he has a lot orange, great control and a sure sense ophrasing. This cat can wail. He can be verysmooth, then cut loose with a growl andend up with a shout. What more can youask of a singer?July 20 Springfield. III.The Illinois Central Bluesfest

The week before the KCB&J Fest, Idecided to hit the road. The folks of theIllinois Central Blues Clubwere extremelyfriendly hosts and had put together a verynice festival. It was at the Trade Winds inKnight's Action Park. This must havebeen what Fairyland was like when it wasa hotspot for big bands.

We arrived in time to hear about halfthe set by The Big Bad Blues Machine, featuring the ILBT horns. This was a tenpiece band with a female vocalist. Comparisons to Ten Wheel Drive are completely appropriate. Vocalist "Hurricane"

Ruth McMaster has a bigbrassy voice thatcan ride on top of the five horn players.Good band.

    Springfield Shaky

"Wildman" Eddie Snow and the Snow-flakes followed. Snowwonthis years ICBCtalent contest. Some interesting parallelsbetween Snow and Hatch. Both are sep-tuagenarian natives of Mississippi deltaarea. Both retired, were talked into com-ing back and then won their club's talentcontest. Both are baritones that sing thereal blues. It'd be great to hear themtogether.

Springfield Shaky (Dennis Lock) hasmany ofthe same roots as Stevie Ray, andthey showed up in his playing. A guitarslinger with a good earthy voice, Shakyhas that same thick tone and biting attackas SRV. He fronts a trio that featuresformer Kansas Citian Tony McKinney onbass and drummer Gary Boston. Goodplayers all and a good show band. Oneobserver commented, "he puts the grooveto it." Even did a wah-wah slide solo.

Saffire closed out the show. BassistEarlene Lewis was unable to make the gig,so Gaye Adegbalola and Ann Rabson did a

duo. They had a slight problem with thesound trying to make the piano hearable.(Has micking a real, acoustic piano be-coming a lost art?) Actually the sound outfront wasn't bad. The problem was Rabsoncouldn't hear herself in the monitors, adistinct disadvantage.

But the ladies tore the place up. Thecrowdresponded to their tongue-in -cheek,slightly raunchy songs. Rabson is a goodboogie pianist, if not exceptionally origi-nal. She's also a fine guitarist. Adegbalolahas a strong voiceand is agood showperson.

Thanks to Vicki, Joe, Tom, Bonnie,Bill and everyone who made the trip soenjoyable. 111be back. And we were gladsome of you could make it down to ourlittle event as well.

Notions Top KCBSTalent ContestItwas a large and raucous crowd thatfilled the Grand Emporium for thefinals of the Blues Society talentcontest, July 11th. When the applausehad died down and the amps were turnedoff, it was the Blues ....Notions that had cap- CA:UGH7 'tured the tri p toMem-phis. ( I ( ! '~"THEAC.TThe contest dem-onstrated how severallocal bands are ma-turing, the Notionsamong them. I caught MUSIC REVIEWthe Notions a li.ttle B Y lA R E B E ARover a year ago, Just ....after a rather major change in personnel.Things have changed since then.

Tom "Trashmouth" Baker has ma-tured as both a vocalist and a performer.Baker has a good voice for the blues, a bitof a growl and an approach that stressesdelivery rather than polish. The band had two other things goingfor them, besides improved playing. First, they looked the part and projected a lot ofpresence on stage. Plus they had obviouslyworked out their set in detail. They didn'twaste any time on stage.

The Blues Notions have become agood, fun band that deserved the win.

The Dan Doran Band had the dubiousdistinction ofleadingoffthe show. Playingthe first spot is the toughest one to winfrom, but that is the luck ofthe draw. Theyopened with a hot set. Saxophonist DanaSmith, in particular, was in great form. However, all four soloists showed theyhave a complete understandingof how a solo should be built.

Stevie and the Jivetonescame on stage second. They hadbrought plenty offans with them, and it was easy to see why theywere fans. Good vocalist, solidguitar players, goodbeat, easy todance to; let's party.

John Paul and theHellhounds closed out the show.JP and the band is another ex-ample of how bands are matur-ing.Even the waitress noted that"they sound somuch better thanthey did last year." They did, too.

It was the second straightappearance for the Hellhoundsin the finals. In that year, John

Paul ismuch improved, both as a vocalisand a harpist. He uses some interestinglines blowing harp. Guitarist Tony Anderson has also improved greatly and stishows a lot of potential to develop. Maybthat's a good description of the wholband. They've come a long way. If thecontinue to develop as they have, this wibe one very good band.

The contest showed there is plentytalent around town to be heard. Get ouand see some of the hometown playersyou'll be glad you did.
