Course: Eng Lit, Eng language and CommunicationFilm: The Holiday

It’s one of the best Christmasmovies ever as the cast is brilliant and the story is just adorable. Kate Winslet,

Jude Law, Cameron Diaz and Jack Black form a perfect team. It’s a romantic comedy but in no way as cheesy

as others of the same genre sometimes are. A sweet and touching movie!

Course: Music and Entertainment Industry Manage-mentFilm: Home Alone 1

“Keep the change ya filthy animal!”Seriously though, Macaulay Culkin’s expressions and quotes are just epic! I remember it was on tv EVERY SINGLE YEAR (I grew up in Greece), so I guess that for me it’s not Christmas until I see it on!

With the holiday season nearly upon us, we asked you to let us know your favourite Christmas films. It’s bound to happen; you get home, lots of free time, want to relax from a hard year and you want to get into the spirit. So here’s some of your favourite festive films and top rated by UH students, happy hoildays!

Course: Eng lit, Journalism and Creative WritingFilm: Die Hard

The only Christmas film that gives the greatest gift of all: Bruce Willis punching Germans!

This 1992 classic came in at number one in our ‘what’s your all tie favourite Christmas film of all time’ poll!

Directed by Brian Henson, and starring the wonderful Michael Caine as Mr Scrooge, the Muppets tell their version of Charles Dickens’s famous novel ‘A Christmas Carol’. The film is a feel-good comedy, with a moral lesson at the heart of it. There are a few great jokes that you’ll want to re-wind and watch again. The soundtrack is pretty awesome too and with Kermit the frog, Miss piggy and even Animal (that red muppet that plays the drums) where could you go wrong!

Hours survived at the 96 hour extravaganza for RAG: Far too many.

Hi Alan, how are you, how has your day been?

Hello! I’m very well thank you. My day has been quite chilled, held a RaG meeting a few hours ago and got to reveal lots of good news about how we did over the 96 hours.

So you’re the RAG chairman tell us a bit about your responsibilities as chairman and how you got involved in RaG?

I started off as a photographer for RaG in my first year and gradually got more involved until being voted in as the Chair just before summer.

Essentially the role is to make sure that RaG is raising lots of money, providing

great events and lots of other little things that usually leave me stressing out.

Obviously it isn’t just me, we have an absolutely incredible committee along with the amazing volunteer and sabbatical teams who together make everything a lot easier and much more fun!

How much money did RaG make at the 96 hour extravaganza, and to what charities does all this beer money go to?

The figure at the moment stands at around £3000, with the final pennies being counted as we speak. The money is being split between three great charities the students voted for earlier in the year – Children With Leukaemia, Hertfordshire Action on Disability and Chelsea and Westminster Hospital Charity.

Give us some highlights of the 96 hour extravaganza, aside from rais-ing lots of money for good causes.

Karaoke and the Halloween party were personal highlights – Loads of people

got involved and there were a lot of happy faces (and full charity tins), plus they provided us with some hilarious entertainment.

Have RaG got any other fundraisers coming up?

Mens’ night and Ladies’ night will be running in December so keep an eye out for posters and facebook posts about those. Next semester there will be another 96 hour licence along with lots more fun to be announced in the near future.

Can anyone get involved in RaG?

Absolutely! Fresh faces and ideas are always welcome. Anyone that fancies getting involved should add up the fa-cebook page (Uhsu RaG) or come along to a meeting: Every Tuesday at 5pm in the EleHouse Resource Center.

And lastly what do you want for Christmas?

I feel really old because I asked for a printer this year, but really I’d like lots of new clothes and some new art equip-ment.

Christmas Shopping

Still searching for the perfect gift for your loved ones or just want to satisfy your shopaholic desires? As all year round, Oxford Street and Regent Street are the best places to find some last minute bargains but beware of the masses of people there! If you don’t like to walk in the cold, then the big shopping malls like Harrods, Selfridges or Westfield could be a good alternative for some inside Christmas shopping.

Christmas Market

The Cologne Christmas Market, which is situated along the South Bank, offers the traditional German Christmas experience. Numerous wooden stalls sell all kinds of things, such as candles, little toys or even the well-known German bratwurst. You can visit this market from the 19th November until the 23rd December and the nearest tube station is Waterloo.

Christmas Carol

Mostly held for charity, London Christmas carols are a traditional way of experiencing Christmas. Throughout December numerous carols will take place at Trafalgar Square as choirs will sing all the classical Christmas songs. In addition to this, visitors can also enjoy the sight of the gigantic Christmas tree from 7th December onwards.

December DatesSo here we are again; the year is almost over, it is getting colder outside and nobody can wait for Winter break to begin! But before that, why not get in the Christmas mood by going to some of the numerous events and activities held in London this year? Bluemoon Magazine has picked out some of the best things to do, so that you can have a wonderful Christmas!

Winter Wonderland

in Hyde ParkFrom 19th November until 4th January you can grab your friends and family and go down to Hyde Park’s Winter Wonderland. With London’s largest open-air ice-rink, a big wheel and numerous shows it offers one of the best days out in London! Walk under those Christmas lights, drink punch at one of the several market stalls or buy your beloved a gingerbread heart. Did I forget to mention the admission is completely free?! So what are you waiting for?

Christmas Lights

If you fancy the magical Christmas atmosphere that surrounds London at this time of year, take a walk through Oxford Street, Regent Street, Carnaby Street and Marylebone High Street as they will be illuminated by all different sorts of lights. If you want to be part of something special and spread the Christmas love, then head to Covent Garden Piazza between 11th November and 3rd January where designer Paul Cocksedge has installed a giant tree which lights up when two people kiss under the mistletoe.

MELANIE BAXTER Final year Ba Hons Fine Art

“…….. we must take the picture (a convenient name, even an old one) as a kind of traditional stage: the curtain rises, we look, we wait, we receive, we understand: and when the scene is over and the picture gone, we remember: we are no longer the same as before: as an ancient drama, we have been initiated.” Roland Barthes 1979

My Interest lies in changing states, in tensions, construction and deconstruction. At present I am working from my original artwork and using digital techniques to reconstruct the work in a changed format.

I started my Artistic journey focused on sculpting large 3D abstract steel structures and have subsequently taken this need to construct onto canvas and Fabriano paper. I construct around colour, patterns and form, introducing layering where appropriate. I enjoy the random introduction of a fresh process and use all sorts of media. I mix the all the elements together where I can, sometimes with surprising outcomes. Gestural stokes combine with shadows and media to turn the art space into a sensory encounter between different movements within the work. I focus totally on the artwork that I am creating and the emotion response that I encounter while fully engaged is consuming, visually, mentally and physically. My Artwork references a combination of historical traditions from abstract expressionism to colour field painting and on towards the openness of graphic design and graffiti.

Aware that Jamjar was arranged primarily by students, I approached with doubt, having experienced first-hand the calamities some student events ended up as. I have to say, though, I was pleasantly surprised at just how professional everything looked, from the lights to the stage and everything in between. If anything, the stage looked more packed out than it had when artists such as Example have played at The Forum. This certainly says something about the vigour with which the students are approaching events at the uni- well prepared, and determined to give the big-timers

a damn good run for their money.Describing themselves pre-emptively as a failed band from the future, Kakuzi kicked off the night in spectacular fashion, with a booming drumbeat that led into an anthemic first track. Continuing with more tracks that wouldn’t sound out of place at a much larger venue, their frenetic playing was met with wild enthusiasm, with the standout tracks being their cover of Gorillaz’s ‘Feel Good Inc.’ And their own track ‘Miracle’ (out on iTunes now).

Taking to the stage next were Kids Uncanny, sporting a very unusual ¾ female lineup. From the get-go, the Kids rocked the house with catchy power-chord driven punk pop, grabbing all the last bar-clingers and dragging them toward the stage. Reminiscent of a female Fall Out Boy, they delivered some fantastically catchy tracks that I found myself humming after I’d left the gig. Kids Uncanny are certainly not to be taken lightly by their appearance, and

are definitely a force to be reckoned with.Third up onto the stage were melodic rockers Cascades. Kicking off with immediately flawless fret-fingering and perfect instrumentalism, they brought the stage to life with a fantastic chemistry. Tracks like ‘Boiling Point’ sustained massive build-ups that are well worth a listen- or five. A sterling example of well-made melodic rock, these guys meant business.

Headlining the night were Cardinal Jack- this three piece brought the tempo of the evening to a smashing crescendo, brandishing a fusion of the best of American rock with twinges of classic British indie riffs. With exactly the kinds of tunes to bring even the toughest of bar-clingers to the stage tapping their feet, I can definitely see these guys up on an NME stage at festivals soon.

If this JamJar is anything to go by, the series to follow will most definitely take the uni’s music scene by absolute storm.

Taking the cake (and the Barclay’s Mercury Prize) is this goth-chic trio from South London. So it begs the question; how is it possible to create an album so melodically sorrow-filled in the streets of London?

Evidence of such beauty is vivid throughout all twelve tracks. ‘Islands’ shows off their effortless contribution to stripped-back indie. The signature riff featured on the track is beautifully complimented by vocalists Romy and Oliver, calling out to the infatuated hearts of London Town. The purity

of Oliver’s vocals during the opening of ‘Fantasy’ captures their eerie approach to romantic society. It is then aided by the singular drop of its first note- pure genius. Deserving winners of the Mercury, The xx are ambassadors of simplistic brilliance.

Listen to both tracks above, not to mention the subtle keyboard featured on ‘Heart Skipped a Beat’.

2008 saw the musical interest in bands like The Dykeenies (forgettable), The Cribs’ release of Men’s Needs, Women’s Needs, Whatever, and the magnificent Antidotes by the one and only Foals. However, the critically acclaimed trio from Northern Island seem to have brought these generic indie stylings of such bands two years into the future. Despite their peppy riffs and extensive use of falsetto harmonies, they swiftly

fall into the category of ‘guilty pleas-ure’. 2010 has seen the further rise of Two Door Cinema Club, who played the NME tent at this year’s Reading Festi-val. Their performance was one of the few I recall, and guilty pleasure hardly proved an issue after a bottle of vodka.

Listen to: ‘Come Back Home’, ‘What You Know’, ‘Eat That Up, It’s Good For You’.

Foals’ debut in 2008 saw the introduction of their nonconcrete sounds and signature riffs. Their music videos, consisting of octopus burning and hanging hearts, saw a turn in the music industry. Indie was no more just black and white. Their enigmatic lyrics are what seem most appealing, and the Oxford clan have carried them through onto their second release. This year, Foals released Total Life Forever, approaching it from a completely different angle to Antidotes. Still abstract at their best, Yannis & co. convey a newly acquired sense of momentum through some rather aquatic riffs. The 6:50 of pure genius that is ‘Spanish Sahara’ captures a new side to the Oxford lot- compassion at its best (not something heard in Antidotes). This track’s immense build-up can only be appreciated when listening to every second of the song. Such aspects made Foals a strong contender for this year’s Mercury Prize. I have seen

the band about 5 times now, once being at this year’s Reading Fest. Don’t be fooled by their Total Life Forever’s chilled abstraction; their set always proves riotous.

Listen to: ‘Spanish Sahara’ (not a second less), ‘Blue Blood’, ‘Alabaster’.

With 2010 coming to a close, and plans for new years already in discussion, it seems fitting to look back at some of the great musical gems that glistened the airwaves in 2010. Be sure to add them to your christmas playlist!

It has taken 10 years, two little Fockers with wife Pam (Polo) and countless hurdles for Greg to finally get in with his tightly wound father-in-law, Jack. After the cash-strapped dad takes a job moonlighting for a drug company, however, Jack’s suspicions about his favorite male nurse come roaring back. Ben Stiller, Robert Di-Nero Laura Dern, Jessica Alba and Harvey Keitel join the returning all-star cast for a new chapter of the worldwide hit franchise.

Before I start this review, I need to tell you, this film isn’t for everyone. Yes, its about facebook, but there’s no sign of a facebook rape, funny group, or urgently de-tagging last nights photos here. The film is based upon the (partly) true story told in Ben Mezrich’s ‘The Accidental Bil-lionaires’, a novel that tells the story of how Mark Zuckerberg (Eisenberg) and Eduardo Saverin (Garfield) created what we now know as facebook. It plays out as a dark, inevitable downfall to the worlds youngest billionaire and the rise, and in some ways fall, of facebooks creators is shown throughout various flashbacks brought about by the trials, set a few years after, that Zuckerberg faced in order to bring him down for, as the tagline says, ‘making enemies’.

Eisenberg plays his part perfectly, one you struggle to sympathise with due to his re-silient nature we see in his trials with Gar-field. He plays the part almost expecting you to hate him, but well aware of the fact that we can’t help but respect his intelli-gence, wit, and ruthlessness in reaching the top of his game. However, I couldn’t help but pity him, doubting whether he really was as intelligent and entrepre-neurial as we see, or did everything get

too much for him? Garfield combats this so well, as we see his struggle to maintain a sense of order with the business slowly crumble throughout, revealing a fantas-tic and emotional scene showcasing the understated performance of Eisenberg and the culmination of Garfield’s tension seen throughout. Also to note is yet an-other fantastic, if a little shallow, perform-ance from Timberlake. After his perfect performance in the underrated ‘Alpha Dog’ it’s pleasing to see him still on form.

Fincher, having a mixed form with his past few releases, has really excelled here, creating an intelligent, well thought out, and in some places funny film. Overall, the film pleased me with its style, being able to look from the outside in, now fa-cebook will never seem the same again.

The film sees Skandar Keynes and Georgie Henley return as Edmund and Lucy Pevensie in a journey to the mysterious Eastern Islands. This time around they are joined by their cousin, Eustace Scrubb, played by Son of Rambow’s Will Poulter. This film bring backs some much loved and hated characters from the first two films featuring Prince (well, King) Caspian, the White Witch and Aslan. Simon pegg will be replacing Eddie Izzard as the voice of Reepicheep.

Starring singer Christina Aguilera and the legendary Cher, the films tells the story of Ali Rose, played by Christina. Ali, a small town girl, goes to LA in order to make all her dreams come true. She gets a job in The Burlesque Lounge as a waitress, where Tess (Cher) is the proprietor and head-line act. Whilst working at The Lonuge, Ali is drawn into the world of the burlesque, the glamour and the performance, and is taken under the wing of a friendly featured dancer Julianne Hough.

It was obvious, wasn’t it? It’s the most anticipated media release of the year, and with sales of over £5,000,000 pre-dicted in the first 24 hours, it’s go-ing to be snapped up by thousands.

make sure you get your hands on a copy as you don’t want to be the one guy out of your friends who is actually revising rather than playing CoD over the Christ-mas break. The game made by Treyarch has garnered some highly positive reviews already. Set in the Cold War era, you play in various behind-enemy-lines battles in-cluding the Vietnam War amongst others.

The online multiplayer has also been expanded, with new weapons such as crossbows and options for different rounds. You can also gain ‘CoD points’ to unlock new weapons and attach-ments, giving you more of a reason to continue playing (as if you needed one).

For fans of Treyarch’s previous title, the Nazi Zombies return with a bit of a twist, where you play as John F. Kennedy, amongst others, protecting the White-house. Oh and for all you Matrix fans out there: there’s bullet-time slow-mo.

If You Liked: Pretty much any Call of Duty title, any ‘modern warfare’ based FPS...if you like shooting stuff, get this.

So Christmas has rolled around again and as per usual a whole stack of great titles are available for Santa to give you on the 25th. I am going to run through my top 5, to ensure you aren’t rushing to HMV with that gift receipt on Boxing Day to returns Nan’s thoughtful copy of FIFA ‘06...

In my opinion, out of all the Bond games Activision could choose to remake it was rather risky of them to go for one that holds dear in so many people’s hearts. But my god have they succeeded.

Created by Eurocom, the team behind 2002’s excellent ‘007: Nightfire’, the game features a ‘more up to date version of the classic film’ (their words, not mine), with the likenesses of Daniel Craig replacing Brosnan amongst others. The factor that defined the original however was its mul-

tiplayer mode. Split screen multiplayer is hectic, yet accurate thanks to the Wii-Mote, instantly bringing around the nos-talgia of the original. Online multiplayer is also included, using a system similar to that seen in the Call of Duty franchise for levelling up and unlocking new weapons, and with an easy to play system it’s sure to get the family playing all night long.

So, it’s had its release date changed more times than Madonna has had facelifts.

The big question is, unlike Madonna’s bo-tox, will it be worth it? If it’s ‘more than a demo’ demo ‘Gran Turismo 5: Pro-logue’ is anything to go by, we have the ultimate rac-ing game experience coming our way. With over 1000 cars in the game, real-istic weather-based effects, crash dam-age, a course creator, skid marks, dust, and grass effects, and a whopping 16-player online mode, this is sure to be a must have for any racing game fan.

Fable 3 is the defini-tion of British video gaming. Although many huge titles re-leased of late, such as the Grand Theft Auto series, come from devel-opers in Britain, no other title contains the huge in-put from Britain as a whole as this. Made by Lionhead studios, based in Guildford, you play as the King’s son, in the medieval world of Albion, where it is your task to overthrow your father as he gets a tad dictator-y. Featuring the vocal talents of famous Brits such as Simon Pegg, Stephen Fry, John Cleese, Zoe Wanamaker, and Jason Manford, the game is sure to be a hit.

It’s pretty self explanatory to be hon-est with you. Just like every other Fifa though yet again EA have ex-celled. Without stating anything obvious about the game, new fea-tures include being able to play as the goalkeeper (which is harder than it sounds), being able to play as a specific player throughout his career, and 11 vs. 11 online multi-player, which is great when you can get a team with all your mates going.

On July 28th 2010, NBC in North Alabama reported a man had nearly assaulted a woman and escaped the scene. The woman’s brother, Antoine Dodson, said the suspect left fingerprints and a T-shirt. Antoine stated, ““Well, obviously we have a RAPIST in Lincoln Park. He’s climbin’ in your windows, he’s snatchin’ your people up, tryin’ to rape ‘em. So y’all need to hide your kids, hide your wife, and hide your husband cause they’re rapin’ everybody out here.”

The first site to post the video and begin its career as a meme was Reddit.com on July 29th. The video then resulted in popular Youtube channel schmoyoho, known for their Auto-tune the News series, releasing a remix of Antoine Dodson’s statement.

The video has had 14 million views to date and is claimed to have helped move Dodson and his family out of the projects to a better way of life.

The video is on the schmoyoho channel and is one of several memes to have been turned into an auto-tuned remix.

Moonfaker - Part 1The Apollo 11 moon landing of 1969 marked the first time man set foot on the moon. Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin landed on July 20th and set imaginations of the world soaring when the live images came through. However, several conspiracy theorists are convinced that the whole thing was staged - that it was filmed in the Nevada Desert, directed by Stanley Kubrick. These theorists strive to point out inaccuracies in the photography and film footage. Here are several photos and for and against opinions. The decision is yours to believe whether it was faked or not.

Flags WavingFor: There is no wind on the moon.Against: The inertia of placing the flag would make it wave slightly.

No PhotographersFor: In photographs of one astronaut or the other, no camera is ever visible.Against: Cameras were built into the spacesuits.

No StarsFor: There are no stars visible in any of the photos of the moon landing.Against: The reflection of the moon’s surface from the sun makes it difficult to see any stars.

lolwut

The hummingbird is

the only bird that can

fly backwards and

elephants are the only

mammal that can’t

jump

No CraterFor: There isn’t a landing crater beneath the lander module.Against: The engines of the module cut out before landing so it hovered to land, kicking up very little dust.

Lighting VariesFor: Aldrin is clearly visible in the lander’s shadow, there must have been multiple light sources as if from studio lighting.Against: There were multiple light sources from the sun, the reflection of the Earth and the modules as well as the lunar surface.

Clear FootprintsFor: The footprints on the lunar surface are too pristine.Against: The surface of the moon is like volcanic ash, a very fine powder, the footprints would stay preserved thanks to the airless vacuum of the moon.

No LeftoversFor: Surely the Hubble Space telescope would pick up anything left behind on the moon’s surface.Against: No telescope on Earth or in space has that kind of resolving power. The smallest thing you can pick up on the surface of the moon is as big as a house.

These are only a few of the images that are under dispute by many conspiracy theorists. The moon landing is apparently fake only as a bid for the Americans to win the Space Race. But if it did happen it was only for Neil Armstrong to claim the moon in the name of the Freemasons.
