Director’s MessageTo be successful in life, one has to do periodical “account taking” and introspections. Eliminate completely anger, fear, worry, guilty, anxiety and other negative emotions from your daily life. Practise cheerfulness self confidence and faith in God to push you on the desired end of fulfilment, peace and contentment.

Dr. M.D. Manoharan, Director,

RLIMS

PresiDent’s Message

Dear Readers,

I am overwhelmed to see the fifth issue of BLOSSOMS being released successfully.

I reiterate that two generations have lost the opportunity to familiarize themselves with Hindi and other languages required for enhancing their employability throughout India. As the future of the country is in the hands of our children, we are morally bound to stress the Government to meet the expectations of the educationalists and industry.

“Learning for Better Living” is our slogan and we consciously introduce and manage our courses that will ultimately make our students employable. We have already initiated actions for commencing new courses relating to Television Production and Networking, and we are in dialogue with various organizations for placement support.

The present-day students are more conscious about this. I wish that the parents are equally conscious and admit their wards in courses that will help the children get a job on successful completion of the courses.

The New Year has already dawned and there shall be a New Era in everyone’s life. Think loud and grab the opportunity to select the right course that suits your vision and goal. All of you shall take the guidance of learned people, seniors and well-wishers.

The Indian Institute of Banking and Finance has trained our faculty members and they are now better informed to handle their syllabus for B.Com. and MBA. I am sure we will rise up to the expectations of IIBF.

The Management is planning to introduce Banking and Insurance electives in MBA that will expand the scope of employability.

Wish you all a Peaceful and Prosperous 2011!

Dr. R. Lakshmipathy,President, SLF

can we change our Destiny or not?

During a momentous battle, a Japanese General decided to attack even though his army was greatly outnumbered. He was confident they would win, but his men were filled with doubt. On the way to the battle, they stopped at a shrine. After praying with the men, the General took out a coin and said, “I shall now toss this coin. If it is heads, we shall win. If it is tails, we shall lose. Destiny will now reveal itself.” He threw the coin into the air and all watched intently as it landed. It was heads. The soldiers were so overjoyed and filled with confidence that they vigorously attacked the enemy and were victorious. After the battle, a lieutenant remarked to the General, “No one can change destiny.” “Quite right,” the General replied as he showed the lieutenant the coin, which had heads on both sides.

If you believe in yourself, you can accomplish anything.

You can change your destiny, if you wish. If you aren’t responsible for yourself, who else is?

1. Self-control is the first step in your journey towards mental peace. Some people think, self-control could be attained only after great penance. It is not so. Without wasting your energy, if you could focus it in a desired direction, you possess self-control.

2. Whatever you do, do it well. you should have full concentration on it. You should also do it with involvement and in a cheerful manner.

3. Learn to live the present usefully, productively and happily. This is the third step for gaining mental peace.

4. Keeping the mind and the body

in a relaxed state is a sure way of gaining mental peace. Relaxation is commonly understood as keeping the body in a state of rest. No doubt, this is a way of giving rest to the tired muscles of the body. But, real relaxation is keeping the mind away from emotional turmoil alone.

5. When you learn to take a detached outlook on life, you will reach the fifth step for mental peace. The functional aspect of life depends on human relationships. We love our family members, friends, relations and others. It is also necessary for happiness and self-preservation.

6. Let us cultivate the habit of getting satisfaction with what we have. This would lead us to the sixth step of mental peace. Satisfaction depends

on the mind and not on the place you live.

7. If you train your mind to be happy all the time, you have ascended the seventh step towards mental peace. Man’s natural tendency is to remain happy. Some people are capable of being happy in the midst of adversity. Some other people cannot derive happiness even from the best of circumstances. It is the mental attitude that makes one happy or unhappy.

8. If you learn to accept things as they come and patiently work out your way through it, then you would reach the eighth step towards mental

peace.

9. By being sweet to others, we can build a good relationship around us. If you practise this with care, you will reach the ninth step for attaining mental peace.

10. Maintaining good health is absolutely essential for maintaining mental peace. That could be the final step. An unhealthy man is a worried man. Body is the medium through which life functions. If the medium is not kept in a healthy state, life cannot function with optimum efficiency.

Choose one step a day, analyse it in your mind and try to practise the guidelines given for that day. By following this process, in ten days, you would have completed ten important basic principles for attaining mental peace.

In olden days, women were interested only in cooking, cleaning, washing clothes, taking care of the people at home, collecting firewood and so on. Married women’s lives revolved to a large extent around managing the household. Moreover, in those days, women were expected to have more children. Women during the 18th century were acknowledged as nothing more than

housewives. Their food habits were health-oriented, with high nutrition value. They used to eat more nutritional foods including pulses, cereals, raw vegetables and high protein foods. So, they were in good health those days without the need for any additional exercises. Their daily routine at

home itself provided physical exercises to their body.

The lifestyle of women has changed now. As most of the women are employed now, a part of their daily work at home has been done by the servants. Moreover, inspite of the development

of science and technology, they enjoy the benefits of grinders, mixers, washing

machines, gas stoves… which help them to do their work easier and faster without

giving any physical strain to their body. Next to sleep and work, watching TV consumes

more time than any other activity. They are not aware of the fact that frequent television viewing

may function as a risk factor in a number of disorders. Health problems may result from many hours of TV watching daily.

Women of modern India are held in high esteem. They are considered equal to men in all respects. Gone are the days when women were denied the benefits of education. Today, women have more opportunities in the field of education. They are self-dependent and self-employed. We find women in almost all walks of life. Worldwide, there has been a large shift towards less physically demanding work except the fields of agriculture and construction work. This has been accompanied by the increasing use of mechanized transportation. e.g. a greater prevalence of labour-saving technology at homes, and less active recreational pursuits e.g. watching television. They go from one place to

another by using their own two-wheelers,

four-wheelers or they prefer to go by auto rickshaws or buses. The walking habit of the people has reduced to a large extent these days.

Women today gain weight because of unhealthy food choices like fast food and family habits like eating in front of the television instead of around a table. They eat excess of fast food, junk food, sweets and food which lack nutritional value. In spite of all these changes in their lifestyle, they are affected by many health-related problems like heart disease, strokes diabetes, obesity and cancer. Obesity is a chronic disease which is a major health problem. High-calorie, low-nutrient snacks and beverages, bigger portions of food, and less-active lifestyles contribute to the obesity epidemic.

Women of recent days are busy with too many commitments. So they are affected by tension and stress. Stress is one of the major causes of illness. The effects of stress have a major impact on women’s health. Present women hold double responsibilities. Women folk do not have the opportunity to spare their white-collared job as well as their family responsibility. Their level of interest to take care of their health, time and opportunity to pursue that. Also, their affordability to go for that is not uniform for the women of all walks of life. Women of today lack physical exercise due to the change in their lifestyle. So, they are in need of going to the gym and healthclubs in order to give

physical exercise to their physique and to maintain a good health.

Health plays an important role in everybody’s life. Now a days, the concept of being healthy has traversed age and sex bars with both men and women becoming increasingly health-conscious. With the number of individuals, who are obese is on the rise, weight loss and weight management programme is increasing in its popularity. But, the initial participation in fitness activities is related to motives associated with weight control achievement, self-control, self-confidence and stress relief.

The concepts of well-being has taken new dimensions in the city. The number of people frequenting fitness centers and health clubs is on the increase. Earlier, it was only the youth who sweated out in gymnasiums for a w e l l -t o n e d body. The s i t u a t i o n has changed today. It is not body-b u i l d e r s but those who wish to burn that extra fat too who have become regular visitors at fitness centers. These days, even couples frequent fitness c e n t e r s .

Today, most of the people do exercises as a habit to keep their weight under control. Also, a lot of people join the gym purely because doing a workout is considered trendy.

Regular exercises are good for the heart and also for people who have blood pressure problems. It also helps to reduce the cholesterol level.

During my study of human potential, I have come to learn that each of us is working with 3 sources

of Power.

1. Energy

2. Time

3. Money

We are all allotted a certain amount of energy that is to be used in an allotted amount of time that will, if utilized correctly, bring us a substantial amount of money and business. Though it may not be apparent to the untrained eye, each of these sources of power is always in a state of flux, constantly changing.

If a person is to have any amount of success in business and personal life he must master the art of using his time, energy, and money in a manner that not only meets the needs of

today but also keeps in mind the need for advancement towards the

future.

When we speak of mastering the art of using our time, energy and money properly, we are more or less speaking of a person that has come to the understanding that his daily thoughts, emotions and actions are either adding to are taking away from his sources of power. By simply looking at a persons’s daily routine, you can

assess if that person is success – oriented. A person’s daily routine determines how he would spend his time, energy and money, thus giving you a snapshot of his future. We don’t stop to think about it much because it has become, as we said, a routine. However,

what we are doing or what we neglect to

do on a daily basis is either strengthening us or weakening us.

If we are ever to reach the goals and business endeavours that we have envisioned, we have to have what experts in the field of human potential have referred to as our Pathway of Power or Optimized Living. Our Pathway of Power is present when we have taken the time to structure our daily routine so that we are getting the maximum uses of our time and energy. For those in business, the result is ultimately seen in the maximum influx of financial increase.

The reason that some people are successful where others are not, can be defined very clearly. Successful people know what they want and can express it in very vivid terms.

When you talk to people who are successful at what they do, you will leave the conversation empowered and willing to buy in, in some

way, to what they are doing.

When it comes to setting goals of what you desire to accomplish or manifest in your life and business, remember, there are truly no degrees of difficulty as it relates to the power of the human mind. However, before you can accomplish anything, you have to be specific about your desired result. “Today, I want a

car”, is not good enough. When done correctly, you can set a goal and put the plan in place to get a Mercedes Benz just as easily as you can, a

Saturn. The same is true in your finances. We can manifest a million

dollars just as easily as we can, twenty dollars.

eNergy, tIme aNd moNey

Blossoms8

If we are not specific, we are more likely to get what is most common.

You need to know how much money you want to make each year.

You need to know what kind of house you want to live in, what kind of car you want to drive.

You need to know what profits you desire for your business.

You need to have systems of measurement in place.

If you’re not clear of where you’re going, anywhere will do!

1. Law of Straight Lines: The shortest path between two points is a straight line.

The second thing that causes certain people to be successful and not others is that they don’t try to make the process more complicated than what it is.

People time and again, get so tangled up in the preparation to take action that they are tricked into thinking that they are acting. These are the people that will give you the story about how hard business is. If one person can make a million dollars, anyone can make a million dollars. All we have to do is to find a mentor that has done what we are trying to do, see if they are willing to share their knowledge and then follow the law of the straight line.

2. Law of Focus Energy : In order to get what you want, you have to focus on it until you do.

By learning this principle we are miles ahead of the person that only has a dream. The number one problem is that many don’t have a stick-to-it-ness down on the inside that drives them to hit it until they hit it.

We talked about seeing your goal and learning to keep it in sight. The next thing you have to do is to keep swinging toward your goal until you reach it! This is best seen in the sport of baseball. What if every baseball player that struck out made up in his mind that he would never be able to hit a homerun, so why try? The reason that we have a Babe Ruth is because he was not afraid to double his rate of failure. Babe Ruth at his peak had more

strike outs than any other player. The only thing that made him Babe was that he got just one extra hit per week that the other players missed.

If you are ever going to have a business or company that is operating on a global playing field it develops unsual clarity and a willingness to expand your dreams and your goals. There is no way that you can utilize the Law of focussed energy until you have clarity of vision.

3. Law of Vision: Seeing your desired outcome in the now.

For years we have heard of great sports figures using the power of visualization to accomplish great goals, even breaking world records. What these world class athletes are taught to do is to run through their event several times in their minds just before they perform. The key is for them to focus totally on what

they desire to happen. What we have learned about the human mind is that it does not distinguish between what is real and what is only imaginary. So, when the time comes for the person to actually perform, the mind simply causes the person to more or less re-enact in real life what was previously imagined in the mind.

This same principle can be applied in business too. In business, we’re constantly setting goals that deal with business performance. What if we were to take the time daily to envision the outcomes that we desire? The mind would begin to re-enact

the scenarios that we envisioned bringing our goals and dreams to pass much quicker with less effort.

4. Conclusion

The ultimate goal of business is profit. We can see profit only when we as individuals harness and apply principles that will help us to utilize our 3 Resources of Power: Energy, Time and Money, Start today, don’t wait! You may not see the results of applying these laws the next day, the next week or even the next month, but compounded over the next 12 to 24 months you will see your life beginning to change!

Skype is a software application that allows users to make voice

calls over the Internet. Calls to other users within the Skype service are free, while calls to both traditional landline telephones and mobile phones can be made for a fee using a debit-based user account system. Skype has also become popular for its additional features which include instant messaging, file transfer, and video conferencing. The network is operated by a company called Skype Limited, which has its headquarters in Luxembourg and is partly owned by eBay.

Things you’ll need:

• Computer

• Internet Access

• Webcam

1. Install the free Skype software onto your personal computer or laptop. You can a c c e s s

the free software by downloading it from the following url – http:www.skype.com/. Once you have the software downloaded to your machine, run the executable file to install the free Skype software.

2. After installing the free Skype software to your computer, step through the installation process. If you don’t want to have calls from callers outside your contact list – be sure to set the option to only allow calls from your contacts. You can change this setting by selecting the ‘Tools’ link and then the ‘Options’ link. Next, select the ‘Calls’ tab and select the ‘Only allow people in my Contact list to call me’ option.

3. Purchase and instal a webcam to your

computer that can be used for the free Voice call option from Skype. One webcam recommended by Skype is the Logitech QuickCam Pro for Notebooks. There are many different types of webcams available; so, be sure to do your homework before purchasing one.

4. Add loved ones and friends to your Skype contact list. Once your contacts have been added, simply choose the ‘Call’ feature to place a ‘Voice only call’ or the ‘Video Call’ that will use your webcam. Both options are free and can save you a tremendous amount of money.

When you run a website or a more complicated internet service, reliability comes to the first plan. Even if you provide perfect content, incredible service or anything else that people like, it costs nothing if visitors cannot reach it.

Behind the scenes, the internet has a very complex structure that can be imagined like a pyramid:

Network – your website is located on a particular computer somewhere in the Internet; it connects to other computers including visitor’s via a network.

Hardware server – that particular computer where your website resides.

Software server – Computer program running on a hardware server a c c e p t i n g

v is i tors ’ requests and giving away

content, there are many servers and the most popular is the web server; however, you might have heard of ftp server, ssh server, mail server, telnet server, and so on.

Application – your unique content: website, blog, service, photo gallery, files – the things you share to the visitors.

If failure happens on any of the levels, your visitors do not get the content, or get it broken. There are many reasons why failure can happen; let us have just a few live examples: during hardware upgrade, engineers forgot to connect cable connecting datacenter to Canada, this caused Canadian visitors unable to reach websites hosted in this data center; hardware server was out of free disk space, and database stopped working; mail server stopped responding due to a big number of spam messages received; Content manager uploaded the wrong web page.

In case you do not get to know about failure quickly, you lose visitors, customers and money. It is impossible to run failure – free service due to the nature of the Internet and technology complexity, but it is possible to get notified if something goes wrong and fix it as soon as possible.

Almost all data centers invest into monitoring of their network and hardware, they provide close to 100% uptime. But you must know, they monitor only the network and low-level hardware. Their primary goal is to provide you with powered-on hardware connected to the Internet, and they

do this well though.

Everything else relies on you. It is your job to make sure your web server is up and returns no errors. Fortunately, this complex job can be delegated to third-party server monitoring services.

Server monitoring services like Uptime Inspector intented to test targets (web servers, file servers, mail servers and so on) from the different parts of the world providing resource owners with instant alerts on failures. Uptime Inspector is designed to be the most feature-rich server monitoring service; it can monitor almost all types of servers (HTTP, SMTP, POP3, SSH, FTP, MySQL, custom port) and send our notification messages by SMS, e-mail, instant messaging, RSS, and

even a phone call. Each target is monitored from several locations around the world.

With Uptime Inspector there are many monitoring scenarios you can set up:

Monitor website: get SMS alert if it becomes

unreachable.

Monitor mail server: get SMS and AIM alert if it becomes unreachable or responds slowly.

M o n i t o r downloadable file; get e-mail alert.

Monitor website; review weekly response time reports.

Monitor office router; get alert if it hangs.

Monitor your website position in Google; get alert if it goes up or down.

Check your website for broken links and many more.

Depending on the importance of monitoring task, it is possible to choose the number of nodes to monitor from, monitoring interval, persons to notify and other options.

Definition of inforMation technology

Information Technology or IT, also cited as Information Service (IS) or Management Information Service (MIS), can be defined as the development, design, study, implementation and management of computer – related information. It can also be defined as the use of computer (hardware and software) to manage information.

what is inforMation technology? In the 1960’s and 1970’s, Information Technology

was limited to people working in the banking sector, mathematical engineers and computer scientists. In the 1980’s, the arrival of personal computers made it possible to be used in many more sectors and gave rise to a surge in the field of Information Technology. Previously, for the purpose of business, storage tapes were created by a single network administrator to interconnect employee workstations. The information stored in this workstation was placed in a server farm, located far off from the industry. However, now, people have started communicating, using e-mails instead of snail-mails. It is an industry which deals with the usage of computer hardware and software and networking. Information Technology has accomplished a lot in the 21st century. IT is a combination of computer and communication technology. It is the transfer of information from one peer to another.

why is inforMation technology iMPortant? Information Technology is used for storing, protecting, processing, securing, transmitting, receiving and retrieving information. In business establishments, Information Technology is used for solving mathematical and logical

problems. Information Technology helps in project management system. Firstly, planning is done, then the data is collected, sorted and processed and finally, results are generated. It helps managers and workers to inquire about a particular problem, conceive its complexity and generate new products and services, thereby improving their productivity and output.

The primary importance of Information Technology in education is that various learning resources can be accessed instantly, by students as well as teachers, at their convenience. Learners can also adopt multimedia approach and collaborative learning. The information is authentic and the latest updated information is available. Multiple communication approaches like chats, forums, e-mails, etc. can be adopted by them. Students can access the on-line libraries and distance learning is also possible. Information Technology has proved to be a significant employer. Many people with knowledge of computers have got jobs in the field of Information Technology and have successfully made it into a career. It has helped in finding cures for many diseases thereby serving mankind in more ways than one. Different kind of softwares are provided for hearing and visually impaired people which aids them in their passion for learning new things and gathering information.

Information Technology has advanced tremendously since its invention and will continue to advance in the future. In today’s world, owing to its wide applications, sound knowledge of Information Technology is a must to have a successful career.

Study of INterNet SeCurIty

Cryptology is the science that studies the scientific aspects of the security techniques to protect the data, that is, i t encompasses both cryptography and cryptanalysis.

cryPtograPhy

Mankind has always felt a need to disguise information, even

long before the first computers a n d calculating machines existed. Since it w a s created, the Internet has evolved and become an essential communication tool. However, this communication i n v o l v e s an increasing number of security problems. Transactions that are made through the network can be intercepted. So, it is difficult to establish laws concerning the Internet security. The security of this information needs to be guaranteed; this is the role of cryptography.

The word cryptography is a generic term that describes all techniques that make it possible to encrypt messages, or to make them unintelligible without specific action.

Cryptology is essentially based on arithmetic operations. In the case of a text, it involves transforming the letters that make up the message into a series of numbers (in the form of bits in computing because computers use the binary system), and then performing calculations on these numbers to:

• Modify them to make them an unintelligible format. The result of this modification (the encrypted message) is called ciphertext as opposed to the initial message, called plaintext.

• Make sure the recipient will be able to decrypt them to get the original text.

The act of coding a message to make it secret is called encryption. The reverse method, which involves tracing the original message, is called decryption.

Encryption is usually performed using an encryption key, while decryption requires a decryption key. Keys are generally broken down into two types:

• Symmetric keys: In this case, a single key is used for encryption and decryption. This is also called as secret-key encryption or private key encryption.

Blossoms14

• Asymmetric keys: In this case, a different key is used for encryption and decryption. This is also called as public-key encryption.

Decryption refers to the act of trying to illegitimately decipher the message (whether or not the decryption key is known by the attacker).

When the decryption key is not known by the attacker, he/she may try to do cryptanalysis or cryptoanalysis (i.e. trying for breaking the code).

the functions of cryPtograPhy

Cryptography is traditionally used to conceal messages from intruders. Today, this function is even more useful in the internet communications whose reliability and confidentiality cannot be guaranteed. Cryptography is currently used not only to protect data with confidentiality but also to guarantee their integrity and authenticity.

cryPtanalysis

Cryptanalysis refers to the reconstruction of an encrypted message into plaintext using mathematical methods without the knowledge of both sender and receiver. As a result, all cryptosystems must necessarily be resistant to cryptanalysis methods. When a cryptanalysis method decrypts an encrypted message using a cryptosystem, then the encryption algorithm is said to be “broken”.

The cryptanalysis methods are generally recognized as:

• A ciphertext-only attack involves finding the decryption key using one or more ciphertexts.

• A known-plaintext attack involves finding the decryption key using one or more ciphertexts, while knowing the corresponding plaintext.

• A chosen-plaintext attack involves finding the decryption key using one or more ciphertexts, the attacker having the option of generating them from plaintexts.

• A chosen-ciphertext attack involves finding the decryption key using one or more ciphertexts, the attacker having the option of generating them from plaintexts.

Even though the entrepreneurial success strategies are not different for women or men, women do have traits that help them in starting and running a business. After all, most successful entrepreneurs have a few things in common such as courage , vision , intuition and persistence. They

• Learn to care and support their siblings and families

• Are multi-tasking caregivers

• Have the intuition muscle to protect themselves from danger

• Connect more easily with people and love to have a support group at work

• Are patient with the process

• Brand & market themselves: are natural marketers, passionate & enthusiastic

• Create new contacts and friendships

• Consistent and thorough with daily tasks

ProbleMs • Male dominant social order

• Bankers consider women loanees as higher risk then men loanees

• Family obligation is also a bar for them

• Married women give more emphasis to family ties & relationships

• Low level risk-taking attitude

Vincent Willem Van Gogh 30 (March 1853 – 29 July 1890)

was a Dutch post-impressionist painter whose work had a far-reaching influence on 20th century art for its vivid colours and emotional impact. He suffered from anxiety and increasingly frequent bouts of mental illness throughout his life, and died largely unknown, at the age of 37, from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Little appreciated during his lifetime, his fame grew in the years after his death. Today, he is widely regarded as one of history’s greatest painters and an important contributor to the foundations of modern art. Van Gogh did not begin painting until his late twenties, and most of his best-known works were produced during his final two years. He produced more than 2,000 artworks, consisting of around 900 paintings and 1,100 drawings and sketches. Although he was little known during his lifetime, his work was a strong influence on the modernist art that followed. Today many of his pieces—including his numerous self portraits, landscapes, portraits and sunflowers—are among the world’s most recognizable and expensive works of art.

Van Gogh spent his early adulthood working for a firm of art dealers and travelled between The Hague, London and Paris, after which he taught in England. An early vocational aspiration was

to become a pastor and preach the gospel, and from 1879 he worked as a missionary in a mining region in Belgium. During this time he began to sketch people from the local community, and in 1885 painted his first major work “The Potato Eaters.” His palette at the time consisted mainly of sombre earth tones and showed no sign of the vivid coloration that distinguished his later work. In March 1886, he moved to Paris and discovered the French Impressionists. Later he moved to the south of France and was taken by the strong sunlight he found there. His work grew brighter in colour and he developed the unique and highly recognizable style which became fully realized during his stay in Arles in 1888.

The extent to which his mental illness affected his painting has been a subject of speculation since his death. Despite a widespread tendency to romanticise his ill health, modern critics see an artist deeply frustrated by the inactivity and incoherence brought about by his bouts of sickness. According to art critic Robert Hughes, Van Gogh’s late works show an artist at the height of his ability, completely in control and “longing for concision and grace”.

self Portraits

Van Gogh created many self-portraits during his lifetime. He was a prolific self-portraitist, who painted himself thirty-seven times between 1886 and 1889. In all, the gaze of the painter is seldom directed at us; even when it is a fixed gaze, he seems to look elsewhere. The paintings vary in intensity and colour and some portray the artist with beard, some beardless, some with bandages; representing the episode in which he severed one of his ears. Self-portrait without beard, from the end of September 1889, is one of the most expensive paintings of all time, selling for $71.5 million in 1998 in New York.At the time, it was the third (or an inflation-adjusted fourth) most expensive painting ever sold. All of the self-portraits Van Gogh executed in Saint-Rémy show the artist’s head from the left, i.e. with the side opposite his mutilated ear, showing only his good side. Many of Van Gogh’s self portraits are depicting his face as it appeared in a mirror i.e. his left side in the image is in reality the right side of his face. During the final weeks of his life in Auvers-sur-Oise, although he was producing many paintings, Van Gogh did not paint any self-portraits.
