PREFACEDR BLACKFORD has created a science. Shehas by painstaking labor over many years de-veloped the power of accurately determiningthe character of a man by taking account ofhis observable physical and mental qualities, and, later, of teaching other people to do thesame. It is obvious that a student of the now fa-mous Blackford method cannot determine aperson s character from any one set of quali-ties. Frequently, after a given set of quali-ties has made a certain strong indication of

character, a second or third set will modifythe first deductions.Yet each deduction is, as far as it goes, cer-tain and sure. Of all the sets of qualitiesobservable and useful in determining charac-

ter, the color scheme of the person observedis perhaps the most fascinating to the laymanand most clearly and dramatically proved byethnology and biology to have just t ~ t im-portance in character analysis that Dr Black-ford assigns to it.

6 PrefaceThis little volume shows the generalscheme used by Dr. Blackford in using color

to determine character. It is not a text book,t h a t . e ~ n g s in the author's extraordinarystudy course teaching \people n detail theentire science, and how to use i t , -but it ismarvelously suggestive and illuminating. I fit will only prove an alluring stepping stone

for the reader toward the full comprehensionand mastery of a science as essential as it isnew, the volume will a thousand times repayhim or her for the reading.Bear in min that whereas a certain degreeof blondeness or darkness in an individual is,as this velume proves, an infallible indicationof character, as far as it goes,-no readermust conclude that it goes all the wayBlondes are inconstant, you know, afterreading the following pages. So they are inthe sense that blondeness is an indication ofmconstancy. .

But remember that this s a very differentmatter from seeing a blonde person and say-ing, there goes an inconstant man.

Dr. Blackford could tell whether the manis inconstant; she can teach you to tell. Butyou have gone only a very small way on her

INTRODUCTIONLL angels are blondes-according to artists. In the paintings and pottery of ancient

Egypt, Greece, Rome and Spain, divinity, royalty, nobility and aristocracy are oftenrepresented by white skin, blue eyes andflaxen hair.Poems and songs of love in ancient andmodem tongues sing the charm.s of the snowyneck, rosy cheeks, azure eyes, alabaster brow,shell-pink ears, golden hair and lily fingers.

On the stage, heroes and heroines, thegood and lovely in general, are usuallyblondes-villains, criminals and slaves brunets.

Our common speech is full of such expressions as, That man s white -indicatingnobility of character or fairness and justice; He treated me mighty white -with thesame signification. We also speak of womenas being divinely fair, and blue-eyed andbeauty are used in some connections almostsynonymously.Until very recently, most dolls had blue

Thenewspapers frequently take up what I sayand make a sensation of it. More than onegarbled report of a scientific statement hasbeen copied by the press far and wide. There is no variable among human beingsso striking as that of color none so easilyobservable and none which has made sostrong an appeal to scientific investigators aswell as to popular imagination.

CHAPTER IEVOLUTION OF WHITE M N

N inquiry into the biological cause of variations in human color into the mental and psychological causes accompanying these andinto the historical and pre.-historical causesof the attitude toward blondes revealed nart in literature n the drama and in popular speech will aid us n understanding themany differences between blondes -and brunets.

    PIGMENTATION

The immediate cause of the difference incolor among human beings s the relativeamount of pigmentation n hair skin iris andretma.Scientists have long been at work strivingto discover the cause of pigmentation andespecially the cause for variation in theamount of pigmentation.

In general it is well known that dark orheavily pigmented races inhabit the tropicsand that lighter or less pigmented races in-

  • 8/13/2019 Blondes and Brunets

12 londes and runetshabit the temperate and north temperatezones.

or a long time scientists have workedupon a theory that heavy pigmentation resulting in dark color helped the inhabitantsof hot countries to keep cool. This was because of the known fact that dark bodiesradiate heat more rapidly than light bodies.

Of two pieces of iron of the same size al .dshape one black and the other painted whiteand both heated to the same temperaturethe black one was thought to cool off muchmore quickly than the white one. This is inaccordance with a law of radiation at onetime held but now discarded by scientificmen.A difficulty was met however when thelaw of absorption was taken into considera-tlon.According to this law dark bodies absorbheat from sources of higher temperature thanthemselves much more readily than lightones. If the black iron and the white ironare both placed upon the same stove theblack one will heat up much more quicklythan the white one.

It is probable that both of these laws have

volution of White en 13some effect in determining the evolution ofcolor.

NEGROES ND ESKIMOSIt is well known that black people in the

tropics keep in the shade as much as possibleand are very largely nocturnal in their h a b i ~ sComparatively few are seen abroad or atwork during the hours just before or justafter noon.Keeping in the darkness and shade theymake the most of such natural ability as theyradiate heat. By avoiding as far as possibleexposing themselves to the direct rays of thesun they absorb heat as little as possible.

n the other hand the lighter coloredraces in the cold North could not absorbmuch even if they were black and theirslower rate of radiation enables them to con-serve better the natural heat of their bodies.Negroes generally have difficulty in keeping warm in cold climates. They requireniore clothing in cold weather than whites;prefer to keep indoors and their quarters asa general rule are so hot that they seem sti-8 ing to white people.

14 londes and runetsBut the theory that these laws of radiation

and absorption explain everything about pig-mentation and that man s color has beenevolved wholly for the purpose of enablinghim to adapt himself to the degree of tem-perature of his environment does notsatisfy. The Eskimo, living in the cold Arcticregions, has black hair, gray or brown eyes, and a yellow or brown skin.Dwellers on the cold northern plains ofAsia and North America are brown and yel-low, while certain tribes in the heavily for-ested but hot, moist mountains of N orthemAfrica are blonde. These considerations have led to a furtherstudy of the causes of pigmentation. In 1895, Josef Von Schmaedel read apaper before the Anthropological Society ofMunich, announcing the theory that pigmen-tation in man was evolved for the purpose ofexcluding actinic or short rays of light whichdestroy living protoplasm. This set Major Chas. E. Woodruff, A.M .,M.D. Surgeon U. S Army, upon a systema-tic search for data to prove or disprove VonSchmaedel s theory.

volution of White en 15THE VIOLET RAYS

In 1905, Major Woodruff published hisbook, The Effe cts of Tropical Light onWhite Men. In this fascinating work, Major Woodruff champions the theory of VonSchmaedel and gives a great mass of datagathered from many scientists as well as theresults of his own original research-all favorable to the theory that the shorter violetand ultraviolet actinic rays of light firststimulate, then exhaust, and finally destroyliving protoplasm, and that pigmentation inboth men and animals has been evolved forthe purpose of excluding these actinic raysof sunlight from the tissues of the body.Sunburn, sunstroke, and the dangerousbums of the X-ray, radium, and other sourcesof short rays, as well as the popularly knownfact that direct sunlight kills bacteria, are allevidences of the destructive effect of actinicrays.

Another evidence of the relationship be-tween pigmentation and sunlight, rather thansun s heat, is the fact that albinos-who areunpigmented-are excessively s ~ n s i t i v tolight, while not any more sensitive to heat

.than others of the same race.

6 lon es and runetsWHY THE ESKIMO IS DARK SKINNED

According to this theory also the darkcolor of the Eskimo the North AmericanIndian and the dweller in the northern partof Asia is explained.

The Eskimo requires his pigmentation asa protection against the blinding glare ofsnow and ice. The plains of Northern Asiaand North America while cold are alsolargely free from fog and cloud so that con-siderable pigmentation is needed in theseparts of the world as a protection againstlight.According to Dr. Carl Beck blondes arefar more liable to burns and lesions by -rays than brunets the extreme brunet beingalmost immune.

CRADLE OF WHITE RACESStill further confirmation of this theory isfound in the evolution of extreme blandnessin N orthwestem Europe on the plains andamong the heavily forested mountains in theneighborhood of the Baltic Sea.This is the cloudiest foggiest darkestregion on the face of the earth and is thecradle of the Scandinavian and Teutonic

orous and severe.VIGOROUS TRAITSEVOLVED.WITH LONDENESSThe necessities of life in such a climate aremore numerous and at the same time more

difficult to obtain than in a milder one. Manrequires more food more shelter more cloth-ing more fuel than in a warm climate.Whereas fruits vegetables fish flesh andfowl are comparatively easy to secure in warmlatitudes they are scarce difficult to secureand require much more preparation in thehigher latitudes.Under northern climatic conditions thenonly the largest strongest healthiest most

8 londes and runetsand most aggressive individuals would sur-vtve.The natural result would be an evolution ofa race of men and women endowed with robust physical mental and psychical charac- tertstlcs.Since the relatively abundant pigmentation

of the primitive first settler in these darkcountries was not needed as a protectionagainst light there seems to be much evidence that whiteness was gradually evolvedalong with characteristics just mentioned.TH WHIT CONQUERORS

A process of evolution therefore havingproduced a vigorous aggressive white raceconquerors of a harsh and severe environment these qualities of the race sent themsouthward eastward and westward to become the conquerors and rulers of darkskinned races less aggressive l ss bold lessdomineering less vigorous because their morekindly environment had not necessitated theevolution of these rugged traits.

There is considerable prehistoric evidenceto indicate that a conquering race of tallvigorous fair-haired blue-eyed white skinned

Evolution of White Men 9men migrated in successive waves over Europe, Asia Minor, Northern Africa, Persia,India, Ceylon, Java, and perhaps as far Eastas the Philippine Islands. This race of men called themselves Aryans, and wherever they went forced their lan-

    guage upon the conquered dark races.How long ago these prehistoric migrationsof Aryans began is lost in antiquity, but thereare pictures in the Pyramids of Egypt show-ing intruding ''white men from the Northwith blue eyes, dating probably 3 500 to4 500 B. c. It is known that there was aninvasion of white men into Greece 2,ooo to1 0 0 0 B CHowever early this migration may havebeen, it was so long ago that the ancient San-skrit, formerly spoken and written in India,classic Greek and Latin, as well as a,ncientand modern German, French, Spanish, Ital-ian, Dutch, Danish, Swedish, Norwegian,English, Gaelic and Welsh languages, andmany dialects now spoken in India all bearunmistakable evidence of their common originin the Aryan tongue.It is significant that Hellenes, the name bywhich the ancient Greeks called themselves;

2 Blondes and BrunetsGaels the name given to themselves by theancient inhabitants of Great Britain and Ire-land; and Aryans the general name given tothemselves by the conquering races to whichwe have referred .all mean ctwhite men. Some high anthropological authorities donot accept the theory of an Aryan race. Someassign the place of its origin to Asia insteadof Europe. But the majority favor the out-.Hne I have given and the preponderanceof evidence seems to be with them.

CHARACTERISTICS OF THE ARYANS .These early white men were tall vigorousrestless courageous aggressive and brainybut they lacked culture. They excelled inwarfare in navigation, n exploration butthey were deficient in arts and letters.Having conquered the brunet natives ofthe various countries to which they migratedthe white men proved themselves to be won-derful organizers creators builders rulersand captains of industry. They early adapted the culture arts andletters developed through long centuries ofpatient plodding by the dark peoples

They built up wonderful civilizationsgreat cities and wealthy and powerful na-t1ons.The ruins of these Aryan creations arescattered through Java Ceylon India Per-

We therefore have the picture of Aryancivilization running back from eight to tenthousand years with the ruling classes thenobility the aristocracy always tending to bewhite and the peasantry the working classesthe subordinates in the scheme of things always tending to be dark.

This fact is reflected in the Aryan languages in the ancient paintings and statuaryreferred to at the beginning of this bookand in the almost instinetive glorification ofthe blonde in art in literature on the stageand in the vernacular. All occidental civilization and a great dealof oriental civilization have been built up andruled from the very earliest times by whitemen. DISAPPEARANCE OF WHITE MEN FROMSOUTHERN CLIMES

It is interesting to note n this connectionthat the inhabitants of modern Java CeylonIndia Persia Syria Asia Minor GreeceTurkey Italy Spain and France are predominantly brunet or very dark-skinned whitepeople.

Many anthropologists agree that theblonde Aryans who built up these old civiliza.tions and left their language as a legacy haveeither entirely died out or are disappearinggiving place to those more heavily pigmented.

    WHY EXCESSIVE LIGHT EXTERMINATESWHITE PEOPLE

The reason for this disappearance of thetall vigorous restless blonde is not so wellunderstood. It ought to be clear to thethoughtful observer however that if white-

ness was evolved in cold dark cloudy Northwestern Europe then the extreme white Aryan race was out of its natural environment

It is a well-known fact that there is nothird generation of white men in India.Woodruff presents an abundance of e\) idence to prove that the effect of an excess ofsunlight with its destructive actinic rays isfirst to stimulate then exhaust and degenerate and finally to extirpate the white races.

WHY EGYPT PERSIA ND ROME FELLHe assigns the degeneracy and fall of allancient civilizations n hot countries to theeffects of tropical and sub-tropical sunlightupon their white rulers.Statistics show that blondes are becomingrelatively less numerous than brunets in England the United States New Zealand Australia and South Africa notwithstanding theconstant fresh migrations of blondes to these

All of these facts are of great scientificvalue to the student of variations in physique,in appearance and in charactor among humanbeings.

TWO IMPORTANT FACTS ABOUT BLONDESTwo fundamental facts about whites standout from all this mass of evidence and are

the key by which we may best understandtheir physical, mental and psychical qualities :I) White color was doubtless evolved inan em ironment which permitted the survivalof those only who were most vigorous, mostintelligent, most aggressive, ~ s t creative, most active and most capable of adaptingthemselves to extremes of heat and cold, feastand famine, altitude and occupation.

    2) In countries where there is a greatdeal of light, whites--and especially extremeblondes-are suffering more or less from toomuch stimulation of brain and nerves, and

CHAPTER IIEVOLUTION OF THE DARK SKINNEDRACESIn studying the dark-skinned peoples weshall understand better their characteristics

if we remember that they were evolved ex-cept in the cases of North American IndiansEskimos and Tartars in a warm pleasantclimate where their necessities are comparatively few.

Man requires less food less clothing lessshelter less fuel in a warm climate than ina cold one.In addition to requiring less of all thesethings the dark-skinned man found them alleasy to obtain from the abundance of animaland vegetable life around him.Primitive man in the tropics and sub

tropics found his surroundings comfortableconducive to quiet and physical inactivity.Since there was plenty to supply his fewwants close at hand he did not need to taketo sea or travel far by land.

Since the dark skinned man received most

EfJolution of th Dark Skinned Races 7of his necessary warmth from outside sourceshe did not need as much oxygen as the whitewho had to breathe in great quantities of itthat he might sustain internal oxygenationand thus produce heat for himself.

As a result of the same conditions all processes of nutrition and elimination in the yellow brown and black were slower than theseprocesses in the white man.

Whereas the white man was required toexpend all of his mental and physical energyin active aggressive combat with his harshenvironment in order to obtain the materialmeans of life the dark man in a kindlier en-vironment and in the midst of plenty hadboth energy and time to spare. As to the North American Indian Eskimo and Tartar further explanation wouldneed to be made.

They were evolved in a cold light climatewhere food was not plenty and where activity is needed. They are therefore moreenergetic than other dark-skinned races.vVith these scientific facts as to the evolution of white and dark races of man in mindany thoughtful logical person should be ableto determine accurately the physical mental

    CHAPTER IIICHARACTERISTICS OF LONDES

Take the normal blonde. By the normalblonde I mean a person of white race withcomparatively little pigmentation in normalmental and physical condition. The lighterthe color of skin eyes and hair the moretypically does he exhibit the characteristicsI outline here. The keynote of the physicalcharacteristics of the normal blonde is posi-tiveness. He inclines to e tall robust witha superabundance of buoyant radiant healthand vigor.Since he was evolved in a cold dark harshenvironment all of his physical processes tendto be rapid and active.

In order to maintain heat it was necessary for him to eat and digest large quantitiesof food and breathe in a great deal of oxy-gen.

In order to maintain health and survive inhis environment he needed a strong reliablecirculation and circulatory system.

30 londes and runetsWith digestion respiration and circulation

positive and active processes of eliminationneeded to be similarly quick and active.MUSCUL R ACTIVITY

All of these characteristics as well as thelow temperature in which he lived necessitated great muscular activity; as did also hisneed for food and clothing.

Therefore the normal blonde is characterized in every department of his physical being by positiveness rapidity adaptabilityenergy and activity.

It is for these reasons blondes seldom suffer from chronic diseases except those induced by the results of living in a climatewhere there is too much sunlight. They become ill quickly and die or recover quickly.

DEFICIENT ENDUR NCESince quickness and aggressiveness are

physica l attributes of the blonde; since in hishunting his sailing and his fighting he hasalways been called upon for quick explosionsof tremendous energy followed by periods ofrecuperation the blonde is not particularlywell fitted for long-sustained physical action.

Clutracttristics o londes 31He expends his abundant energy too rap -idly.

In athletics therefore blondes excel in thesprints and dashes in jumping throwingvaulting and other such contests; while thebrunets are better adapted to long runswrestling prize fighting and other contestswhere endurance is the prime requisite.

In general however most athletes areblondes even in contests requiring endur-ance because of the natural activity love ofconquest aggressiveness and combativenessof the blonde.Since the early environment of the blondewas probably damp and rainy and since hismode of life required both swimming andwading we find him as a rule fond of thewater.

The majority of great swimmers skatersoarsmen and yachtsmen are blondes. The early Aryans were great navigators.uring the time of the Aryan civilization inGreece in Rome in N orseland in Spain and

in France these different nations maintainedtheir sea power. t was when the Aryanrulers had been eliminated by excessive sun-light that their sea power waned.

3 londes and runetsMENT L TRAITS OF BLONDES

The mental characteristics of the blondeare the result partly of the influence of hisenvironment directly upon his mental natureand partly arise from his physical condition.Since his brain was evolved in an environ-ment requiring the constant exercise of intel-ligence the blonde is naturally creative re-sourceful inventive original. These quali-ties it will readily be seen fit in perfectlywith those which are the result of his exu-berant health. The man who has a good digestion a goodcirculation who breathes deeply and whosegeneral health is robust and positive will nat-urally be optimistic hopeful exuberant eagerand fearless. Such a man is willing to takea chance speculative impatient restless al-ways sighing for new worlds to conquer. The early struggle for c:xis.tence of theblonde races led them far afield. They hunted

over miles of territory. They. huntedin the mountains and on the plains. Theywent to sea in ships. Their very climate wasfreakish and changeable.s a result of these environmental influ-ences the blonde developed an eager and ac

He loves to handle and man-age large affairs and come in contact with lifeat as many points as possible.

Because of his exuberant health his splen-did circulation and his naturally optimistichopeful courageous disposition the blondelikes excitement crowds gaiety. He is agood mixer-makes acquaintances readilywith all kinds of people. But on account ofhis changeable nature he is liable to be fickle.

Thus everywhere blondes push into thelimelight engage in politics promote andbuild up great enterprises sell advertise or-ganize colonize create and invent. It is for this reason blondes are many inthe ranks of royalty nobility and aristocracy. This has been observed by many investiga-tors. In the onthly Review for August1901 Page 93 Havelock Ellis says:

4 Blondet and BrunetsHAVELOCK ELLIS ON BLONDES

It is clear that a high index of pigmentation or an ex ess of fairness, prevails amongthe men of restless and ambitious temperament, the sanguine, energetic men, the menwho easily dominate their fellows and whoget on in life, and the men who recruit thearistocracy and who doubtless largely formthe plutocracy. It is significant that thegroup of low-class men-artisans and peasants-and the men of religion, whose mission in life it is to preach resignation to ahigher will, are both notably of dark complexion; while the men of action thus tendto be fair, men of thought, it seems to me,show some tendency to be dark.

DR. A. M. HANSON ON BLONDESOn pages 9 and 96 he says:It so happens that an interesting andacute psychological study of the fair and dark

populations of Norway has lately been madeby Dr. A. M. Hanson. This investigationhas revealed differences even more markedbetween the fair and the dark than may easilybe discovered in our own islands, and this isnot surprising, since our racial elements have

In the same article, on page 97, he says:It may also be marked that the characteristics of the fair population are especiallymasculine qualities, while the characteristics

of the dark population are more peculiarlyfeminine qualities; it so happens also thatwomen, as is now beginning to be generallyrecognized by anthropologists, tend to besomewhat darker than men.

CHAPTER IVF ULTS ND WE KNESSES OF BLONDES

The faults and weaknesses of the blondeare exactly such as might e expected.Since his health and vigor are s positiveand since he lacks in fear and therefore incaution he is inclined to overtax himself toattempt too much.

This applies also to his undertakings. Hislove of the game his willingness to take achance his very optimism and hopefulnessall tend to lead him into foolhardy daring. He is a natural-born speculator and gambler.

    FICKLENESS

Owing to his restless active variety-lovingnature the blonde is inclined to be changeable fickle scattering and irresponsible. Hisoptimism and hopefulness make him all themore liable to these weaknesses. He is always expecting greater and better things justbeyond or in another field of activity.Since he likes to deal with large affairs toorganize and to create the blonde is inclinedto be impatient of detail and therefore whendetail is entrusted to him to neglect it or rush

On account of his optimism eagerness andaggressiveness the blonde s liable to be im-pulsive and erratic and therefore undepend-able.The domineering qualities of the blonde

are liable to excess and it s by no means un-common to find blondes n executive positionswho are merciless drivers of men.

DRUNKENNESSIt s notorious that drunkenness s preva-lent in England Scotland Ireland AmericaScandinavia and Russia which are inhabitedby blondes and where whiskey alcoholbrandy and vodka the stronger liquors-are drunk.

The darker peoples of France Italy andSpain consume more liquor per capita thanthe blondes of these northern countries butthey drink it in the form of lighter wines andtake it constantly so that there is very littledrunkenness among them.

In other words the blonde inclines to takestrong liquor n large quantities at a timethus causing drunkenness; the brunet to takelight liquor n small qui;lntities at a time butmore frequently thus escaping drunkenness.

CH PTER VEFFECT OF EXCESSIVE LIGHT ON

BLONDESs I have already pointed out the blonde

is out of his true environment in countrieswhere there is an excess of sunlight and suf-fers in many ways thereby. The first effect of too much light upon theblonde is stimulation; and we therefore find

many blondes in England America Aus-tralia New Zealand South Africa and inall tropical countries manifesting an extremeof all blonde qualities both physical andmental.

s the result of this kind of stimulationthey are more changeable more fickle moreerratic more irresponsible more impulsivemore inclined to drunkenness and excesses ofevery kind than the normal blonde.fter a f w generations of exposure ~excessive sunlight blonde stocks tend to x-haustion and degeneration which makesthem a prey to crime poverty drunkennessinsanity sterility tuberculosis rheumatismnervous disease perversion and many other

THE DEGENER TE BLONDEThe abnormal degenerate blonde instead

of being a picture of exuberant health andvigor like the normal blonde is pasty of com-plexion with dull spiritless eyes coldclammy hands and feet disordered nervoussystem and weak digestion.Instead of being optimistic hopeful andcourageous he is often pessimistic cynicaland full of nervous fears.Feeling the exhaustion of his nervousforce he is liable to form a drug habit.

n o t ~ e r result of the destructive powerof light in the blonde is excessive obesity.Physicians tell us that obesity is the resultof nervous disorder and Major Woodruffpoints out that this nervous disorder in theblonde is often due to excessive light.

The too stout blonde is often nervous ir-ritable lazy careless and slovenly .BLONDES SHOULD PROTECT THEMSELVES

f men and women of light complexionlacking the protection afforded by pigmentation would profit by the example of the natives of the tropics sub-tropics and otherlight countries and take every possible precaution against the destructive effects of ultraviolet rays they would save themselves frommuch serious trouble. The white clothing worn by white peoplein the tropics and in the summer time is good

in that it reflects rather than absorbs heatand light; but it is much too permeable byshort rays. I have seen white people in India tanned and freckled all over their bodiesand even sunburned by short rays penetratingtheir white gannents.

The ordinary white straw hat worn by menand women in the summer time is also far tootransparent. The best means of protection for blondesare broad low verandas around their houses.heavy opaque shades at the windows and

dark headdress and clothing except in directsunlight.

Effect of xcessifJe Light on londes 4In direct sunlight the best results are obtained by white outer clothing and dark

opaque underclothing. If a white hat orhelmet is worn it should be lined with tinfoil or some other opaque material that willshut out the ultra-violet rays.

The direct light of the tropical sun shiningdown upon the bare head of a blonde foreven a few minutes has more than onceproved fatal.

In this connection it is well to bear in mindthat any white person that is person belonging to a white race is a blonde compared toNegroes Indians Malays Chinese and Japanese who inhabit the tropical sub-tropicaland most of the temperate zones.

White people living in the southern partof the North Temperate Zone or the northern part of the South Temperate Zone needto take a great many of the precautions Ihave mentioned. istory and physiologyagree that they cannot become acclimated inthe sense that they can be indifferent to thefact that they are not living in the midst ofthe environment for which their type wasevolved.Nebraska Kansas Oklahoma Texas New

Studies I have made in these states indi-cate that already excessive light is having itsdestructive effect. I have seen many, manycases of nervous exhaustion throughout allthis southwest.FALLACY OF SUNLIGHT CURES

There has been so much of fallacy taughtin regard to the curative effect of sunlightthat thousands of invalids go to this part ofthe country for their health and for a timeat least expose themselves, soaking in thesunlight, as they call it.

The effect of sunlight being at first tostimulate, they are easily persuaded to imag-ine that they are being cured. But in howmany cases disappointment has followed thisearly optimism the baggage men on east-bound trains know only too well.

Three years ago my employers sent meto Arizona.

When I first reached there I was de-lighted with the climate-felt better thanever I had in my life. I sent for my wife andchildren and for my wife's mother, and wasenthusiastically declaring, 'Arizona for me.'

Within a very few months, however, Ibegan to suffer from nervous exhaustion. This grew worse and worse, until I was confined to my bed with nervous prostration, which was generally supposed to be causedby over-work.I continued to grow worse, until I waspractically insane, and my physician told myfamily that I could not recover.Suddenly one day, in my semi-delirium, Iwas struck with the notion that if I couldonly get away from that awful glare and dryness back to the Northwest, where there weresoothing fog and rain, I would get well. Iwas obsessed with the idea that if I couldonly lie out where it would rain in my face Iwould be all right. When I talked to my wife and mother-

They brought me back to Seattle, andfor weeks I lay outdoors, soaked by the rain. When I felt the rain on my face I knew immediately that I was going to get well. Iam still suffering from nervous exhaustion, but I am getting better all the time.I know a family of four girls, all of whomsuffered terribly front nervous exhaustion inSouthern California, one of them nearly dying in convulsions. They have all recoveredsince removing to a cooler and cloudier climate.A friend of mine went without his hat forseveral summers for the sake, as he thought,of his health. He became a sufferer fromchronic headache, which disappeared onlywhen he learned its cause and protected hisbrain from the ultraviolet rays of the sun.

    CHAPTER VICHARACTERISTICS OF BRUNETS

JuST as the normal blonde is physically andmentally consistent with what might be ex-pected of one of his evolution and history,so is the normal brunet.By the normal brunet I mean a person innormal pl ysical and mental condition, withdark skin, eyes, and hair. Irrespective ofrace, the more pigmentation in skin, eyesand hair, the more typically will the personexhibit these characteristics.Since the brunet was evolved in a kindlierclimate than the blonde, less physical andmental positiveness was required of him andhe has been able to survive without the ex-uberant health, vigor, intelligence, resource-fulness and aggressiveness required by theblonde.

SLOWNESS ENDURANCE SMALLER SIZEHis respiration, digestion, circulation andelimination are all slower and more moderate

    than in the blonde.

8 londes and runetsSince size has not been necessary for hissurvival he does not incline to be so large

as the blonde; nor is he so active so quickor in any way physically so positive. The brunet requires less food breathesless oxygen than the blonde.Since all of the physical processes of the

brunet are slower he expends his energy lessrapidly and is therefore more enduring. Hedoes not become ll so quickly but is moresubject to chronic diseases.Because his environment has not required

it and because of his negative physical na-ture the brunet is not so bold not so aggres-sive not so recklessly indifferent to conse-quences as the blonde.CONSTANCY

or these reasons and because his modeof life as well as his climate has tended tosameness the brunet is more conservativemore constant than the blonde. He is in-clined to resent rather than seek change andmultiplicity of interests. He is therefore ca-pable of greater concentration perseveranceand painstaking care.

In keeping with all of these qualities the

Characteristics o runets 9brunet does not seek the limelight the crowdsdominating position and excitement but prefers a few friends well beloved a quiet homethe affection of his family and pets and anopportunity to enjoy the beauties of natureBecause the brunet has not been compelledto give all of his time and energy to a strug-gle for life against harsh material conditionshe has evolved a tendency to introspection tothe development of science philosophy re-ligions mysteries and other products of meta-physical and spiritual activities.I t is significant that Christianity Budd-hism Confucianism and Mohammedanismt h e four principal religions of the world-

have their origin and their most devoted ad-herents among brunet people. It is also significant that occultism theos-ophy New Thought and other systems ofphilosophy which deal chiefly with the unseenspiritual world should have their origin andmost of their adherents among brunet peo-ples.

The difference between the Orient and theOccident is very largely a difference betweenblondes and brunets.

It is typical of the oriental brunet that he

PATIENCE AND SUBMISSIONThe brunet havin.g time at his disposalhas evolved patience and with it a disposi

tion for detail for minute specialization. Not having a genius for organization andgovernment he is usually perfectly willingto permit the domineering blonde to take thisburden off his hands.

To-day wherever there is stable government it is either in the hands or under theinfluence of blondes white men.Japan and China have advanced rapidlybecause their brunet titulary rulers have suffi

cient intelligence to call in blonde counselors

Char teristics of run ts 5and to learn from the methods of blonde governments.India is ruled by blonde England as sEgyptMexico and some of the South and Central American republics achieved whatevermeasure of stability they had under the ruleof blonde Goths and descendants of Gothsfrom Spain. Now that these white strainshave been killed by excessive sunlight somehave become so unstable that some kind ofwhite protectorate seems necessary.

BLONDE AND BRUNET CRIMINALSPrison statistics show that the blonde ismost frequently guilty of crimes of passion

and impulse crimes arising from his gambling propensities and ill-considered promotion schemes; while the brunet is more likelyto commit crimes of d e l i b ~ r a t i o n specialization detail such as murder counterfeitingforgeries conspiracy etc.Because the blonde is healthy optimisticand naturally good-humored he eliminatesanger hatred melancholy discouragementand all other negative feelings from his mindas easily as he eliminates waste products fromhis body.

52 Blondes and BrunettBecause he is naturally slow cautious con-servative and inclined to be serious andthoughtful the brunet is far more liable toharbor resentment to cherish a grudge toplan revenge to s the dark side of life andoften to be melancholy and pessimistic. The same qualities that cause the blonde tobe cheerful and optimistic when things gowrong give him a tendency to permit things

if they seem trifling to him to go wrong. On the other hand the same qualities that

cause the brunet to be careful and painstakingwith minute details also incline him to worryand grow despondent when trouble comes.

I have been reported bysome newspapers as favoring blondes- byothers as favoring brunets. t ought to beclear that neither color is abetter than thother. Let nothing appearing in this book

be taken to mean that either is the superiorof the other. Each s superior however inhis own function.
