Bleachorexia: When Teeth bleaching Gone Too Far

“There are people who can never get enough,” says New York City

dentist Dr. Irwin Smigel, president of the American Society for Dental

Aesthetics. “I’ve had situations where people have needed root canals

because they’ve over bleached.

Tooth whitening, is a common procedure in

general dentistry but most especially in the field

of cosmetic dentistry. Americans spent more than

$1.4 billion on over-the-counter teeth-whitening

products last year alone.

There are many methods to whiten teeth, such as

brushing, bleaching strips, bleaching pen,

bleaching gel, laser bleaching, and natural

bleaching. Traditionally, at-home whiteners use

overnight trays containing a carbamide peroxide gel which reacts with

water to form hydrogen peroxide.

There are many reasons why teeth lose their "whiteness". It happens

naturally as the mineral structure of your teeth changes over time and as

the enamel becomes less porous. Teeth can also become discolored by

smoking, coffee drinking, and even the fluoride some cities put in tap

water.

"The media has done a good job of making whitening

sound innocuous, but it's not," says Dr. Ira Handschuh,

a White Plains, N.Y., dentist. Carbamide peroxide, the

whitening agent in most bleaches, can irritate the gums,

causing them to recede, making the teeth brittle, chalky

and so thin as to be translucent at the edges when the

product is overused.

Whitening strips and bleach trays may be an

invention of the past 30 years, some would

use acid washes in an attempt to strip away

stains, but unfortunately, these rinses mostly

stripped away all the enamel on the teeth,

leaving them crumbling, says Dr. Scott

Swank, curator of the National Museum of Dentistry in Baltimore.

Do You Have Bleachorexia?

If you feel like you are someone who can't stopping

whitening your teeth, you might have "bleachorexia."

A good sign for you to know that they need to back off on

the whitening, when you have the sensitivity. Also, if you

aren't using it properly it can burn the gum tissue and possibly cause

permanent gum tissue damage as will be mentioned later on.

Why Do Teeth Change Color?

Dr. Rickland says:

Enamel is the hardest tissue in our bodies. It can become

stained due to foods and beverages that we eat and drink over

time, or due to habits that contain staining chemicals like

smoking tobacco. Dental cleaning in the office setting can remove these

extrinsic or external stains. Because enamel has a highly crystalline

structure, it also has a considerable amount of translucency, or the ability

of the underlying dentin to alter the shade of our teeth.

Dental bleaching treatments, often called tooth whitening, can remove

color from both the enamel and dentin. It also has the effect of making

the enamel overly translucent if the bleaching is overdone to an extreme.

This increased translucency can allow shadows from the back of the

mouth make the teeth actually look darker rather than lighter. In these

ways, the enamel can alter the color of our teeth.

American Dental Association Confirms that the causes of

teeth discoloration are:

genetics -- tooth color can run in the family.

aging.

trauma to the teeth.

illness.

medications, such as tetracycline .

exposure to certain foods, beverages and tobacco over time.

ingesting more-than-optimal amounts of fluoride while teeth are

developing, before they erupt.

Dr. Jablow said, “Bleaching is very effective in

moderation, and it’s safe in moderation. Its when

you’re bleaching all the time, beyond what is

recommended—that’s when you run into-

problems.”

Problems that experts say include the

appearance of clear, bluish-looking teeth, which

is a far cry from a bleachorexic’s original

intentions of a super bright, white, youthful

smile.

Risks of Excessive Teeth Bleaching

“Bleachorexia”

These risks are also involved with obsessive bleaching:

Hypersensitivity. Teeth bleaching can make your teeth more

sensitive. "This is the most common complaint," Koslow says.

"Your teeth can become sensitive to hot and cold.” But, she says,

hypersensitivity does usually go away over time.

Oral irritation. "Your gums, palate, and throat can become irritated

from the bleach, and some people also get nauseous from

swallowing some of the solution," Koslow says. These side effects

also subside after you stop using the bleach.

Tooth enamel erosion. If you use a bleaching kit for too long or

bleach too frequently, it's possible to wear away the outer coating of

your teeth. This is just one more reason to stick with an ADA-

approved teeth whitening system under the watchful eye of a dental

health professional.

That Hollywood Smile

Myth

Shocking truth you should know:

Hollywood smiles are

All full of veneers!!!

They don’t simply bleach their teeth; they don’t have the original surface

of their teeth. Giving them white porcelain smile impossible to have on a

natural teeth. So are we chasing a chimera? Absolutely.

Veneers can cost up to $1,200 -- per tooth. On the other hand, over-the-

counter bleaching products run about $30 a month. So can you afford

making veneers all over your teeth? this will cost a fortune.

How Do Teeth Whiteners Work-and Are Any

Methods Better Than Others?

Its simple using carbamide peroxide, hydrogen

peroxide or a combination of the two, teeth do

become whiter, but exactly how that happens is

still not completely understood.

What causes teeth to appear yellow are double-

carbon bonds, which absorb light and trap

chemicals that add color to molecules. When these

double-bonds are broken by the radicals that are

produced by hydrogen peroxide diffusion through

the enamel and dentin. Single-carbon bonds are

formed that reflect light, making the teeth appear

brighter.

In conclusion, all peroxide-containing products seem to work, and the

effectiveness is related to the concentration levels and time applied.

"Higher concentrations, such as 15 percent carbamide peroxide, work

faster than lower concentrations. But what about safety measures. Is this

theory right the more the better. Please check the video below to know

more about Peroxide. Also you can click here to have a good explanation

on “what is carbamide peroxide?”

An Expert View on Top Rated Peroxide

Product:

Dr George’s Dental White Home Teeth Whitening System

How it works: ‘Visibly whiter teeth in 30 minutes

- up to 11 shades whiter in 2-3 weeks’- is the claim.

The professional strength tooth whitening gel

contains hydrogen peroxide.

First you create your own rubber teeth molds with

the ‘warm and form’ mouth trays. These trays

become pliable in hot water; you then press them

onto your teeth.

Then once a day, syringe a thin layer of gel into the

tray and place over your teeth for 20 to 30 minutes,

rinse and repeat three times every sitting. Treat the

top and bottom teeth separately.

Dr. Philip, Expert view: The whitening gel contains a high percentage

of hydrogen peroxide — so it will definitely whiten teeth more than the

others. I’m a bit concerned about the way you are supposed to apply it to

the teeth.

Unlike custom-made trays from a dentist, these ‘warm and form’ trays

are unlikely to provide a snug fit, so there’s a chance this powerful gel

won’t be applied evenly.

Excess gel can also easily escape, particularly as you have to reapply the

product three times in one sitting. This can lead to sore gums and throat,

and may irritate the stomach.

How To Use Zero Peroxide

Cleaning your teeth with your usual toothpaste.

Apply a thin layer of Zero Peroxide Gel to the mouth tray

and place in to the mouth to cover the teeth. (Unlike many teeth

whitening mouth trays, the ones includes with this kit are made from clear super-soft silicone. This

means that they should flex and fit neatly in to place without the need to prepare them in advance

by heating and shaping.) You should keep the mouth tray in place for at least 30

minutes

The Zero Peroxide kit also contains a LED blue light accelerator to

help speed up the oxidizing process that contributes to the whitening

effect of the gel.

Its easy to use while the mouth tray is in place and the clear silicone

is an advantage over other trays which are often only semi-

transparent.

To track your progress, use the teeth color chart included in the

pack. Keep everything fresh for your next treatment with the handy

travel bag and mouth tray

case.
