TERM: 3 WEEK: 10 DATE: 28/9/2018
Deputy Principal’s Report Term 3 has been incredibly busy and engaging for Bennett Road Public School. I
took a moment to look back at the school calendar for the term and was stunned at
all of the fantastic events that our students and teachers have been able to
experience. It is impossible to list everything, but some of the standout events have
been:
• Stage 3 camp
• K-2 sports day
• Peer Play Leader training
• Father’s Day stall
• Colyton showcase
• Swimming Scheme
• Touch Football
• T20 Cricket
• Brumby Assemblies
• Rewards day disco
• Education week
• Gymnastics
• Kindergarten Taronga Zoo excursion
I would like to extend a big thank you to all of the staff, parents and P & C members
that have made these events possible for our students.
Planning for Term 4 Over the past couple of weeks, teachers across all grades have been busy
collaboratively planning high quality teaching and learning experiences for Term 4.
Planning has occurred in consultation with our two extremely knowledgeable
Instructional Leaders, Mrs DiMarco and Mrs Carroll. Collaboration is such a
fundamental aspect of successful schools as pointed out in the What Works Best
Document put out by the Centre for Education Statistics and Evaluation (CESE):

International education researchers point to collaborative practices between teachers
within and across schools as important features of many high-performing schooling
systems.
I look forward to seeing the wonderful learning that will occur in classrooms as a
result of this planning.
Goal Setting Interviews It was great to see so many of our families attending our Goal Setting Interviews on
Tuesday afternoon. As a part of our ongoing commitment to connect our school
community with the educational needs of our students, we recently held the third
session of our Goal Setting days on Tuesday 25th September. The purpose of this
day was to review the 3 student centred goals set at the last goal setting session, in
consultation with parents and carers, students and the teacher. Together we
reviewed and developed student literacy, numeracy and behavioural goals. These
goals will support student success during the second semester and may be reported
on in the Semester 2 reports. This process is an important part of forming and
maintaining an educationally connected community.
We understand that due to work and family commitments, it is not always possible
for some parents and caregivers to make it to school interviews. In order to engage
100% of our school community and support all of our students, we are sending home
goals for students whose families were unable to attend on Tuesday. These goals
have been set by your child’s classroom teacher. If you would like to discuss these
goals further, please contact the school office to make an appointment with your
child’s classroom teacher. If can expect to find these goals in your child’s bag in
week 1 next term.
Happy Holidays I would like to wish everyone a safe and restful spring break. I am looking forward to
seeing all of our enthusiastic learners back and ready for an action packed Term 4.

Instructional Leader’s Report Hello Parents and caregivers,
Our Kindergarten teachers and students have been working exceptionally hard to investigate
numbers and develop early number sense knowledge by completing ‘Number of the Day’
lessons as part of their daily mathematics instruction.
Our students spend quite some time working on identifying numbers and counting which is
heavily reliant on their visual discrimination skills and investigating the numerals 0-9 through
quantities, language and symbols.
Once they meet the number 10 they are then introduced to our base 10 system and early
place value. Place value is the position of a number that tells what value it is assigned. This
is in contrast to the digits 0-9, which indicate “how many.” This can be difficult for some
students to understand as it requires a shift in mathematical thinking and having to identify,
make and represent numbers as ten and some more eg: 16 is one ten and 6 more.
Our Kindergarten students have investigated a range of numbers and represented their
understanding using a variety of mathematical tools. They can represent numbers on ten
frames, number lines, using tallies, dominoes, counters, before and after sequences and
using blocks to represent tens and ones. Once they record their representations on a
whiteboard, they are also asked to explain their thinking to a partner or to the class. This
gives them an opportunity to
articulate their learning using
mathematical language eg: I
investigated the number 12 and I
drew two ten frames because I
filled one for ten and had two
more. We are so amazed by the
excellent number knowledge
they are developing! Here are
some examples of our ‘Number
of the Day’ work.

Coffee and Community
"We have enjoyed another successful term with our Coffee & Community times. We
have ranged from being overwhelmed at education week, to the relaxed atmosphere
in the rain this last week. Whatever the number we see
at the coffee van, we always enjoy our conversations
and opportunities to serve and provide
services/programs/support to our community.
A great success story of the Community & Coffee has
been one of our kindy mums Gloria, desiring to gain
new skills, learning
how to make good
coffee on the
coffee van under
the guidance of our
volunteers Katie and Tara. We are excited to
provide opportunities for our community to step
out and learn new skills whether that be through
the coffee van or other programs in
our community. Please come and
see us if you would like more
information on programs
happening in our community..."

Christmas Shoeboxes It’s getting close to Christmas silly season, where we are braving the shops to buy
gifts for all our loved ones. This is a joyous time for most of us, but for many kids
around the world who do not receive a gift at Christmas time. But together, we can
make a difference to the lives of those who do not receive gifts and at the same time
teach our kids some important lessons in compassion, looking out for others less
fortunate and understanding that other kids don’t have what we have.
Once again this year Bennett Rd Public School in partnership with the P&C and
Colyton Church will be participating in Operation Christmas Child where each class
will have one shoebox (or more if they like!) to fill with some special things which will
then be sent to a child from another country who wouldn’t otherwise receive a gift.
Last year we gave over 100 shoeboxes from the school, and we would love to match
if not better that mark this year. The joy on the faces of the children is something
special and I encourage you to check out the video below to see some of what this
means to the kids who receive these shoeboxes… https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bq8FAnzYD94
What is needed is a collective effort from our great families and staff to contribute
different gifts to fill these boxes. These must be new gifts, and they must be small
enough to fit in a shoebox! A helpful list of options for gifts will be given to each class
but the basic ideas are either something to wear, something to love, something to
play with, something for personal hygiene, something special and something for
school. Each class will be given an
age range and gender to prepare
their box for. Each class will also
have the opportunity to follow where
their box is sent to through the
unique barcode given to their
shoebox.

Collection dates will be the last two weeks of Term 3 (17th-28th of September) and
the first two weeks in term 4 (15th-26th October)
Lastly we will be holding a mufti day for the kids on the 19th of October with a
donation of a gift for the shoebox needed to come in mufti. If you have already
donated you do not need to donate again to come in mufti.
This is an exciting opportunity for our community to come together and give back to
others far less fortunate than ourselves.
If you have any questions feel free to grab me at school or contact me via email at
