Birth Expectations
Karakia- “The wahine and her whanau may use karakia”
Have you discussed with your LMC your use of prayer? Do you wish a certain person to say karakia?
Whanaungatanga – “The wahine and her whanau may involve others in her birthing programme” Everyone involved can have a role to play e.g Kai, cleaning, bathing, caring for pepi. Who is going to be with you and what roles are they going to have?
Te Reo Maori – “The wahine and her whanau may speak
Te Reo Maori”
Whenua-health of the placenta influences what you are
to become in future generations
Mana – “The dignity of the wahine, her whanau, the
midwife and others involved is maintained.”
Mutual respect, caring, hospitable, acknowledgement How do you expect your midwife & others involved in your care to maintain your mana?
Hau Ora – “The physical, spiritual,
emotional and mental wellbeing of
the wahine and her whanau is
promoted and maintained”
How can the midwife promote
physical wellbeing, emotional
wellbeing, Whanau and spirituality?
Tikanga Whenua – “Maintains the continuous
relationship to land, life and nourishment; and the
knowledge and support of kaumatua and whanau is
available.”
Do you wish to keep your placenta and bury it?
Do you have special container (Ipu whenua) made of clay
or harakeke for the whenau?
Mokopuna – Reflection of the Ancestors. – “The
mokopuna is unique, cared for and inherits the future, a
healthy environment, wai u and whanau”
