Cover photograph: The flying insects this brilliant sky predator takes must be near-sighted and insensitive to color. Other flycatchers are of subdued color, but not this little fellow. Despite brilliant plumage, however, the male Vermilion Flycatcher is not overconfident. He courts his chosen mate by hovering and singing to her high in the air and by offering her butterflies and other brilliant insects. Vermilion Flycatchers are declining in Arizona and other parts of their range due to human destruction of the moist habitats they prefer. The birds are still abundant at many sites and are not an immediate conservaton concern. However, without our attention and care, they will decline.


The Agua Fria River runs through the center of Dewey-Humboldt, Arizona. Na-tive Cottonwood and Willow dominate the banks and form a closed-canopy for-est on the river floodplain. Introduced Salt Cedar, Russian Olive, Siberian Elm, and more than 50 other nonnative plant species are present. Runoff from a nearby farm and a mine pollute the water. Invasive Crawdads, Bullfrogs, and other introduced species are abundant. Despite the human impacts, native spe-cies of plants and animals remain dominant. For wildlife’s sake, I block access by livestock and recreationists on foot, horseback, and wheels on my portion of the river and floodplain forest.


Introduction In 1997, I began making lists of the birds and other wildlife I saw around my 20-acre farm on the Agua Fria River in the town of Dewey-Humboldt, Arizona. After a few years, I gathered the lists together in one notebook. While doing this, I researched the various species groups (birds, grasshoppers, mammals, etc.) and compiled lists of all the species known to live in or to visit Arizona. The Arizona Wildlife Notebook, published in 2014, includes lists of all those species categorized in eleven groups (amphibians, ants, birds, butterflies and moths, dragonflies and damselflies, fish, grasshoppers and other singing insects, liz-ards, mammals, snakes, and turtles). The book gives common and scientific names and estimates of species health and stability. It’s a handy tool for record-ing species anywhere in the State of Arizona.

This book, Birds of Dewey-Humboldt Arizona, is a chapter from the full notebook with added notes and photographs for observed species. The book is a report to my community that I hope stimulates others to record their bird sightings.

I recommend uploading bird sightings to the online checklist program at http://ebird.org. Operated by the Cornell Lab of Ornithology and National Audubon Society, eBird provides basic information on bird abundance and dis-tribution at various spatial and temporal scales. Placing sightings on the ebird website will help ornithologists and other naturalists working on bird conser-vation.

This book has common and scientific names alphabetized by common name, and it has an index. Finding a bird name can be tricky because the common name isn’t always what we think. For instance, the list gives Arizona’s two Robin species as “American Robin” and “Rufous-backed Robin.” The index is often more helpful. For Robins, it lists the species as “Robin, American” and “Robin, Rufous-backed.” It also gives page numbers for both species’ scientific names.

Conservation The past decade’s droughts, storms, and spreading deserts show that humanity is changing the Earth. Research coming from many sources shows that world-wide animal extinctions are occurring 100 times faster than in Earth’s previous mass-extinction events recorded in the fossil record. Extinction isn’t the only concern. Total loss of a species results after years of decline. In 2014, the World Wildlife Fund, the Zoological Society of London, and other organizations carried out an extensive analysis of more than 10,000 wild-life studies. The analysis reached a stunning conclusion: The total number of animals on Earth has declined by more than 50% since 1970.


This figure from the review by the World Wildlife Fund (2014) shows that, from 1970 to 2010, Earth’s animals declined by 52%. I believe nature conservation was the great challenge of the 20th Century, and we failed the challenge. Human beings are imposing a mass extinction that now appears destined to eliminate most animals on Earth. I hope readers of this book will disagree with my gloomy conclusion and look for ways to stop the extinctions.

Bird Conservation Status Apart from domestic cats and dogs, birds are the most familiar species group. Even in cities, birds are a daily sight. Because we see them so often, birds are the best known and understood animals. We know more about their distribu-tion, their numbers, and their health and stability than any other group.

So, what do we know? One of the oldest and most familiar citizen-participation activities is the Audubon Society’s Christmas Bird Count. Wild-life biologists have used the Bird Count to assess the stability of bird species populations. A recent analysis of the Count’s results show that many U.S. bird species are declining. Some of our most familiar birds appear in current counts less than half as often as they did just 50 years ago. For ex-ample, over the past 50 years, sightings of Log-gerhead Shrikes, a common Arizona species, de-clined by 72%. The Shrike in the photograph at left is the only one I have seen in 19 years of watching at my location.

native birds are declining. Another 20% are of possible long-term concern. The U.S. Endangered Species Act protects only 1% of Arizona bird species.

The reason for the declining numbers is not a mystery. Researchers have shown that the declines are due to the impact of human activities, chiefly:

• habitat destruction (building and farming) • resource harvests (logging, livestock grazing, and water diversion) • habitat deterioration caused by introduced invasive plants • habitat poisoning with pesticides and toxic wastes

The human impact is a direct consequence of human numbers and resource consumption. Our total global population is nearing 7.5 billion and we are using the Earth’s renewable resources faster than natural processes replenish them.

Unless we control our population and consumption or unless drought, disease, pollution, and rising temperature control it, the environmental impacts of Ari-zona’s projected growth will eventually eliminate upwards of 80% of our bird species. The Arizona Wildlife Notebook provides lists and conservation status discussions for the species groups shown in the table below.

The table has the numbers of wildlife species that AZGFD considers critically imperiled (S1), imperiled (S2), and vulnerable (S3). It also shows U.S. En-dangered Species Act (ESA) numbers for threatened (LT) and endangered (LE) species.

Bird Species Numbers According to the information published by AZGFD, 551 bird species and subspecies occur in Arizona. Regular residents number 451.

Conservation Status Symbols I placed conservation-status symbols in the two right-hand columns of the bird list. The symbols, composed of letters and numbers, are wildlife-biologists’ es-timates of health and stability.They are from the October 10, 2013 Internet list posted by AZGFD (http://azgfd.gov/).

Symbols used by AZGFD • S1 Critically Imperiled: Extremely rare or some factor(s) is making the

species especially vulnerable to extinction. Typically five or fewer locations or very few remaining individuals (<1,000).

• S2 Imperiled: Rare or some factor(s) is making the species very vulnerable to extirpation. Typically 6 to 20 occurrences or few remaining individuals (1,000 to 3,000).

• S3 Vulnerable: Rare or found only in a restricted range (even if abundant at some locations), or because of other factors making it vulnerable to extirpation. Typically 21 to 100 occurrences or between 3,000 and 10,000 individuals.

• S4 Apparently Secure: Uncommon but not rare, and usually widespread. Usually more than 100 occurrences* and more than 10,000 individuals. Possible long-term concern.

Used with the ‘N’ qualifier, the symbol indicates that both breeding and non-breeding populations are present.

Season and Abundance I added seasonal abundance values for birds in Yavapai County compiled from

sightings by Prescott Audubon Society birders and from records in Cornell Lab’s eBird database. Dewey-Humboldt is near the center of the County. I verified the values by


comparing them to my sighting records and found no significant differences. The first four columns to the right of the scientific name are W (winter), Sp (spring), Su (summer), and F (fall). The abundance codes are:

• A = Common • B = Expected but not always present • C = Possibly present • D = Rare; less than 5 seen annually • F = Less than 5 sightings ever recorded

Birds Sighted in Dewey-Humboldt, Arizona

Sighting Records and Symbols The bird list includes information about bird sightings in Dewey-Humboldt (D-

H). My observations began in 1997. They are concentrated near the center of D-H in the cottonwood/willow forest along the Agua Fria River. An (L) in the space beneath the bird names indicates sightings made in the lowlands near the river. Most of D-H is upland desert grassland and chaparral as well as lawns, streets, and buildings. A (D) below the names indicates sightings in the uplands away from the river.

Many of the species marked with an L are also present in uplands (D) where I have not observed. More upland sightings by birders and local residents will be included in the next edition of this book.

In 2016, Filipe Guerrero began observing on my property. He confirmed some of my uncertain sightings and added several birds to my list. The additions include one endangered and several rare species.

Here are the symbols I used to abbreviate sightings information. In future editions of this booklet, I may add symbols for added information. For instance, there might be a symbol for Audubon Christmas Bird Count results. There might also be symbols for backyard feeder results at specific addresses in Dewey-Humboldt. Here are my symbols:

• A Annual: Present every year. • C Common: Present six or seven years out of ten. • U Uncommon: Present one or two years out of ten. • ? Uncertain identification. • (L) In lowlands along the Agua Fria River. • (D) In uplands away from the river. • FG Added by Felipe Guerrero during 2016. • ≥ Identified during and after a particular year. A≥00 means present

during 2000 and every year afterward. Will sometimes include day and month.

• < Present before a particular year. For instance, U<00 means uncommon before 2000.


• - A hyphen indicates Continuous sightings during a range of years. Example: A≥11-14 means continuous for the years 2011 through 2014. If alone, this would mean not present before or after those years.

I repeated the rows with species name, sighting, and conservation information above each photograph.

Photographs Though I have photographed many of the birds, most of the photos I used are by pro-fessional photographers. Their images are sharper. I located photographs in Wikipe-dia and elsewhere on the Internet that were available for unrestricted use as long as I gave credit to the original photographers. About the Author Garry Rogers studied vegetation ecology and historical landscape changes in the deserts of western North Amer-ica. He served on the faculty of Columbia University in New York, and as CEO of Academic Distributing, Inc. He lives by a small perennial stream in central Arizona and devotes his time to wildlife and nature conservation. His blog is at http://garryrogers.com.

A Bird Notebook This book lists all of Arizona’s bird species and includes notes on birds seen in Dewey-Humboldt from 1997-2016. It contains lots of information, but it isn’t complete. I admire birds and often simply watch rather than take photographs or strive to make identifications. Moreover, my observations are from my home on the Agua Fria River near the center of town. You will see other species in other parts of town. I look forward to your reports of birds to include in the next edition.

Wildlife and its habitat are disappearing worldwide. Changes are probably occurring in your neighborhood. An important first step for wildlife conservation is learning where and when species are present. Checklists are a common tool used by professional and amateur naturalists to record presence and track changes.

The best checklists cover small areas such as a park, watershed, valley, or maybe just a backyard. Such checklists are rare. Now's your chance. Happy watching.
