He courts his chosen mate by hovering and singing to her high in the air and by offering her butterflies and other brilliant insects. Vermilion Flycatchers are declining in Arizona and other parts of their range due to human destruction of the moist habitats they prefer. The birds are still abundant at many sites and are not an immediate conservation con-cern. However, without our attention and care, they will continue to decline.

The Agua Fria River runs through the center of Dewey-Humboldt, Arizona. Na-tive Cottonwood and Willow dominate the banks and form a closed-canopy forest on the river floodplain. Introduced Salt Cedar, Russian Olive, Siberian Elm, and more than 50 other nonnative plant species are present along the river and in adjacent uplands. Runoff from a nearby farm and a mine pollute the water. Invasive Crawdads, Bullfrogs, and other introduced species are abundant. Despite the human impacts, native species of plants and animals re-main dominant. For wildlife’s sake, I block access by livestock and humans on foot, horseback, and wheels on my portion of the river and floodplain forest.

Introduction In 1997, I began making lists of the birds and other wildlife I saw around my 20-acre farm on the Agua Fria River in the town of Dewey-Humboldt, Arizona. I researched the various species groups (birds, grasshoppers, mammals, etc.) and compiled lists of all the species known to live in or to visit Arizona. The Arizona Wildlife Notebook, published in 2014, includes lists of eleven groups (amphibians, ants, birds, butterflies and moths, dragonflies and damselflies, fish, grasshoppers and other singing insects, lizards, mammals, snakes, and turtles). The book gives common and scientific names and estimates of species health and stability. It’s a handy tool for recording species anywhere in the State of Arizona.

This book, Birds of Dewey-Humboldt Arizona, is a chapter from the full note-book with added notes and photographs for 137 species observed in Dewey-Humboldt through 2016. Use this book for notes and a field guide such as Pe-terson’s Field Guide to Western Birds to help with identification.

You can upload your bird sightings to the online checklist program at http://ebird.org. Operated by the Cornell Lab of Ornithology and National Audubon Society, eBird provides basic information on bird abundance and distribution at various spatial and temporal scales. Placing sightings on the ebird website will help naturalists working on bird conservation.

This book has common and scientific names alphabetized by common name, and it has an index. Field guides usually list birds in related groups such as ducks or raptors. For quick reference, however, an alphabetical list is easier to use. Finding a bird name can be still be tricky because the common name isn’t always what we think. For instance, the list gives Arizona’s two Robin species as “American Robin” and “Rufous-backed Robin.” The index is more helpful. For Robins, it lists the species as “Robin, American” and “Robin, Rufous-backed.” It also lists both species’ scientific names (Turdus migratorius and Turdus rufopalliatus).

Conservation Droughts, storms, fires, rising seas, and spreading deserts show that humanity is changing the Earth. Research coming from many sources shows that animal extinctions are occurring 100 times faster than at any time in Earth’s past.

Extinction isn’t the only concern. Total loss of a species results after years of decline. In 2014, the World Wildlife Fund, the Zoological Society of London, and other organizations carried out an extensive analysis of more than 10,000 wildlife studies. The analysis reached a stunning conclusion: The total number of animals on Earth has declined by more than 50% since 1970.

Page 7: BIRDS OF DEWEY-HUMBOLDT ARIZONA · State of Arizona. This book, Birds of Dewey-Humboldt Arizona, is a chapter from the full note-book with added notes and photographs for 137 species

This figure from the review by the World Wildlife Fund (2014) shows that, from 1970 to 2010, Earth’s animals declined by 52%. The 2016 WWF report showed that by 2012, the decline had reached 57%. Biologists predict it will reach 67% by 2020. The cause? Human overpopulation and overuse of re-sources. For more on conservation, go to (http://wp.me/P26kDO-dnR).

Bird Conservation Status Apart from domestic cats and dogs, birds are the most familiar species group. Even in cities, birds are a daily sight. We know more about bird distribution,

numbers, and health than any other group.

So, what do we know? One of the oldest and most familiar citizen-scientist activities is the Audubon Society’s Christmas Bird Count. A re-cent analysis of the Count’s results show that some of our most familiar birds appear in cur-rent counts less than half as often as they did just 50 years ago. For example, over the past 50 years, sightings of Loggerhead Shrikes, a com-mon Arizona species, declined by 72%. The Shrike in the photograph at left is the only one I have seen in 19 years of watching at my loca-tion.

Arizona Game and Fish Department (AZGFD) wildlife biologists conclude that 58% of Ari-zona’s native birds are declining. Another 20%

are of long-term concern. The U.S. Endangered Species Act protects only 1% of Arizona bird species.

The reason for the declining numbers is not a mystery. Researchers have shown that the declines are due to the impact of human activities, chiefly:

• habitat destruction (building and farming) • resource harvests (logging, livestock grazing, and water diversion) • habitat deterioration caused by introduced invasive plants • habitat poisoning with pesticides and toxic wastes

The human impact is a direct consequence of human numbers and resource use. Our total global population is nearing 7.5 billion and we are using the Earth’s resources faster than natural processes replenish them.

Unless we control our population and consumption or unless drought, disease, pollution, and rising temperature control it, the environmental impacts of Ar-izona’s projected growth will eventually eliminate upwards of 80% of our bird species. The Arizona Wildlife Notebook provides lists and conservation status discussions for the species groups shown in the table below.

The table has the numbers of wildlife species that AZGFD considers critically imperiled (S1), imperiled (S2), and vulnerable (S3). It also shows U.S. En-dangered Species Act (ESA) numbers for threatened (LT) and endangered (LE) species.

Conservation Status Symbols I placed conservation-status symbols in the two right-hand columns of the bird list. The symbols, composed of letters and numbers, are wildlife-biologists’ es-timates of health and stability. They are from the October 10, 2013 Internet list posted by AZGFD (http://azgfd.gov).

Symbols used by AZGFD • S1 Critically Imperiled: Extremely rare or some factor(s) is making the

species especially vulnerable to extinction. Typically five or fewer locations or very few remaining individuals (<1,000).

• S2 Imperiled: Rare or some factor(s) is making the species very vulnerable to extirpation. Typically 6 to 20 occurrences or few remaining individuals (1,000 to 3,000).

• S3 Vulnerable: Rare or found only in a restricted range (even if abundant at some locations), or because of other factors making it vulnerable to extirpation. Typically 21 to 100 occurrences or between 3,000 and 10,000 individuals.

• S4 Apparently Secure: Uncommon but not rare, and usually widespread. Usually more than 100 occurrences* and more than 10,000 individuals. Possible long-term concern.

• S5 Secure: Common, widespread, and abundant. Safe under present conditions. Typically with considerably more than 100 locations and more than 10,000 individuals.

• ? Inexact or Uncertain: Qualifies the character immediately preceding. Used alone to indicate insufficient information to assign a rank.

• SA Accidental: Not native. • SE Exotic Origin: Not native.

Birds of Dewey-Humboldt, Arizona | 9

• SER State Exotic Reported: Not native. • SHQ State Historical Report: Taxonomy in question. • SH Possibly Extirpated (Historical): Historically present, and there is

some expectation that the species may be rediscovered. • SP State Potential: Surveys needed to confirm presence. • SR State Reported: Surveys need to confirm presence. • SRF State Reported Falsely: Not present in state. • SRFSC State Reported Falsely, State Captive: Present only in captivity. • SRX State Reported Extirpated or Extinct. • SX Presumed Extinct: Not located despite intensive searches, and

virtually no likelihood of rediscovered. • SXS#Q Extirpated or Extinct in Arizona: State rank of # due to re-

introduction; taxonomy in question. • SNR Unranked: Status not yet assessed. • SU Unrankable: Lack of information about status or trends. • S#S# Indicates the range of uncertainty about status (e.g., S3S4). • SNA Conservation status is not applicable because the species is not a

suitable target of conservation activities for one of the following reasons:

• Hybrid Species represents an interspecific hybrid without conservation value. (Hybrids are ranked if they have conservation value.)

• E Exotic Origin: Species is not native to AZ. • AN Accidental/Nonregular: Species is not regularly present in AZ. • N Not Confidently Present: Unconfirmed report of presence. • No Definable Occurrences: Species is native and appears regularly but

lacks practical conservation concern in AZ because it is transient or occurs in a dispersed, unpredictable manner.

• Synonym: Species reported in AZ, but the state data center does not recognize the taxon; therefore, AZGFD does not assign the species a status.

• Q Questionable Taxonomy: Distinctiveness of this entity as a taxon is questionable; resolution of this uncertainty may result in change from a species to a subspecies or hybrid, or inclusion of this taxon in another taxon, with a lower-priority (numerically higher) conservation status rank.

Breeding Status Symbols • B Breeding: Indicates that a breeding population is present in Arizona.

Used with the ‘N’ qualifier, the symbol indicates that both breeding and non-breeding populations are present.

• N Nonbreeding: Non-breeding population present in Arizona.

10 | Birds of Dewey-Humboldt, Arizona

• M Migrant: Transient or migratory populations.

Symbols Used for the Endangered Species Act (ESA) by the U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS)

• LE Listed Endangered: Imminent jeopardy of extinction. • LT Listed Threatened: Imminent jeopardy of becoming endangered. • PS Partial Status: Listed Endangered or Threatened in part of range. • XN Experimental population. • PDL Proposed for delisting (sometimes just PD) • No (No Status). Certain populations of this taxon do not have

designated status. • SAT Listed Threatened due to Similarity of Appearance. This happens

when a member of a non-listed population occurs within the geographic area of a Distinct Population Segment for a listed species (e.g., a wintering bald eagle within the DPS for listed bald eagles).

• PE and PT Proposed Endangered or Proposed Threatened. • C and C* Candidate: Species for which the USFWS has on file sufficient

information on biological vulnerability and threats to support proposals to list as Endangered or Threatened under ESA.

• SC Species of Concern: Describes the entire realm of taxa whose conservation status may be of concern to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, but does not have official federal status.

Season and Abundance I added seasonal abundance values for birds in Yavapai County compiled from

sightings by Prescott Audubon Society birders and from records in Cornell Lab’s eBird database. Dewey-Humboldt is near the center of the County. I compared the values to my sighting records and found no significant differences. The first four columns to the right of the scientific name are W (winter), Sp (spring), Su (summer), and F (fall). The abundance codes are:

• A = Common • B = Expected but not always present • C = Possibly present • D = Rare; less than 5 seen annually • F = Less than 5 sightings ever recorded

Sighting Records and Symbols The bird list includes photographs of bird sighted in Dewey-Humboldt (D-H).

They are concentrated near the center of D-H in the cottonwood/willow forest along

the Agua Fria River. An (L) in the space beneath the bird names indicates sightings made in the lowlands near the river. Most of D-H is upland desert grassland and chaparral as well as lawns, streets, and buildings. A (D) below the names indicates sightings in the uplands away from the river. Many species that live in the lowlands often make forays across the uplands.

In 2016, Filipe Guerrero began observing on my property. He confirmed some of my uncertain sightings and added several birds to my list. The additions include one endangered, one threatened, and several rare species.

Here are the symbols I used to abbreviate sightings information. In future editions of this booklet, I may add symbols for added information. For instance, there might be a symbol for Audubon Christmas Bird Count results. There might also be symbols for backyard feeder results at specific addresses in Dewey-Humboldt. Here are my symbols:

• A Annual: Present every year. • C Common: Present six or seven years out of ten. • U Uncommon: Present one or two years out of ten. • ? Uncertain identification. • (L) Lowlands along the Agua Fria River. • (D) Uplands away from the river. • FG Added/confirmed by Felipe Guerrero 2016+. • MC Added/confirmed by Millie Coulter 2016+. • ≥ Identified during and after a particular year. A≥00 means present

during 2000 and every year afterward. Sometimes include day and month. • < Present before a particular year. For instance, U<00 means

uncommon before 2000. • - A hyphen indicates Continuous sightings during a range of years.

Example: A≥11-14 means continuous for the years 2011 through 2014. If alone, this would mean not present before or after those years.

I repeated the rows with species name, sighting, and conservation information above each photograph.

Photographs Though I have photographed many of the birds, most of the photos in this book are by professional photographers. I located photographs in Wikipedia and elsewhere on the Internet that were available for unrestricted use as long as I gave credit to the original photographers. Photographer names are beneath the photos and in the in-dex. You can use Google to search for names with ‘photographs’ added to see other work by the photographer.

Bird Descriptions Here are some brief descriptions of favorite and common birds of

Dewey-Humboldt, Arizona. Larger photographs and conservation status included in the full Bird List.

American Robin (Turdus migratorius) With their bright early morning songs and tolerance for human neighbors, Robins are familiar to everyone. They love moist ground and lawns without pesticides. There you will often see the classic tug-of-war between a stretching earthworm and a straining bird. Robins like berries and gather around

pyracantha and other shrubs in fall and winter. Description: Eight to eleven inches long, male and female similar, but male breast is deeper red. Robins have average life spans of six years. Nest: Female with help from male builds the nest in spring and lays four blue eggs two or three times during the year. Conservation: Easily poisoned by heavy pesticide use, and preyed upon by cats, hawks, and large snakes, Robins remain numerous and safe under current conditions. (Photo: MDF.)

Barn Owl (Tyto alba) Barn Owls are the most widely distributed of all owl species. They hunt small rodents, and never take anything as large as a house cat or dog. Barn Owls range from 10″ to 18″ in height. They can live for 25 years, but because of human impacts and natural predators, they rarely live more than two. If you have

a Barn Owl living nearby, you have probably heard its “shreee” sound that’s nothing like the hoots of the Great Horned Owls or the toots of the Northern Pygmy Owls that we often hear in Dewey-Humboldt.

Page 14: BIRDS OF DEWEY-HUMBOLDT ARIZONA · State of Arizona. This book, Birds of Dewey-Humboldt Arizona, is a chapter from the full note-book with added notes and photographs for 137 species

Nest: Large tree cavity, barn loft, or house attic. Farmers often place nest boxes around their fields. Conservation: Cats and other owls prey upon barn Owls, and pesticides in the tissues of their prey poison them. Some farmers have stopped using pesticides, but most haven’t. Seven U. S. states list the owls endangered, but Arizona does not. (Photo: Female by Tony Hisgett.)

Black-headed Grosbeak (Pheucticus melanocephalus) Black-headed Grosbeaks aren’t as large as Robins, but they are big enough to have trouble perching on bird feeders. Young birds flutter and flap as they learn to use the feeder. Grosbeaks eat berries and in-sects, but their large beaks are especially effective with seeds.

The birds arrive in spring, build nests, and stay for the summer. They prefer a combination of large deciduous trees and lower shrubs. Their song is a rich warble similar to a robin’s but softer, sweeter, and faster. Nest: Female builds an open, loose nest in a shrub or tree and lays 2-5 eggs. Young birds leave the nest after 12-14 days but can’t fly for two weeks. They hang out on nearby branches and parents feed them. Con-servation: Cats and hawks prey upon Grosbeaks, and pesticides in the tissues of their prey poison them. Wildlife biologists do not consider them endangered. (Photo: Male by GR.)

Bridled Titmouse (Baeolophus wollweberi) ”Tit” is Old English for some-thing small. Bridled Titmice may be small, but they are out-standing in other ways. They have unique facial markings, and they are among the most loquacious and the most hu-man-tolerant of all the birds. They will trustingly take seed from your hand then fly to a

nearby branch where they may surprise you with their jackhammer-

Page 15: BIRDS OF DEWEY-HUMBOLDT ARIZONA · State of Arizona. This book, Birds of Dewey-Humboldt Arizona, is a chapter from the full note-book with added notes and photographs for 137 species

like pecking that sends hull fragments flying. Titmice do not migrate though they wander about a bit in winter. They travel in small flocks that may include other bird species. Nest: Titmice lay four to eight white unmarked eggs in tree cavities and nest boxes. They appear to have mystery helpers at their nest that we have not identified. The birds can live more than six years. Conservation: Because of habitat loss and pesticides, the Bridled Titmouse is of possible long-term con-cern. (Photo: Dominic Sherony.)

Cedar Waxwing (Bombycilla cedrorum)

Cedar Waxwings are medium-sized with very smooth feath-ers. They have a crest that of-ten droops over the back of the head. The wings are broad and pointed, like a starling. The short tail is square-tipped. These birds are uncommon in Dewey-Humboldt. Though they usually form large flocks,

I’ve only seen two groups of three birds. Waxwings pick berries while perching in berry-laden shrubs or trees or while hovering in mid-air. A line of waxwings perched on a branch sometimes passes a berry from bill to bill, until one of them swallows it. They also cruise over water hunting insects, like abdominous swallows. Nest: Waxwings lay three to five pale gray to bluish gray finely speckled eggs in loose nests built in trees. Conservation: Wildlife biologists consider the Cedar Waxwing vulnerable to extinction in some areas. (Photo: Minette Layne.)

Common Raven (Corvus corax) Ravens are smart. They create and use simple tools, they mimic human words, and they call one another to a newly dis-covered food source. Acrobatic fliers, Ravens can roll, somer-sault, and fly upside down. I’ve seen a video of a Raven using a

large can lid as a sled, repeatedly carrying the lid in its beak to the ridge of a snowy roof, and sliding down to the eve fluttering its wings to say balanced. A friend with a Raven family pet told me that their mischief can be wearying. Wild Ravens have lived more than 22 years. Nest: Females do most of the work building the nest. They begin with large sticks and construct a base up to five feet across and two feet high. In a small interior cup, they lay three to seven green or blue mott-led eggs. Conservation: Ravens adapt well to human impacts and may be one of the species that survives the sixth mass extinction. (Photo: Peter Wallack.) Dark-eyed Junco (Junco hyemalis)

Juncos do not migrate, but in the fall, they often drift out of their mountain homes down to nearby valleys. They are espe-cially common in D-H during fall and winter months. These small songbirds have black to light-gray hoods. Males tend to be darker and grayer, females

tend to be lighter and browner. All have white bellies and white outer tail feathers that form a flickering V shape when they fly. Juncos eat seeds, insects, and fruit. They prefer to eat on the ground, so sprinkle a few seeds for them when you fill the feeder. Wild birds can live more than 11 years. Nest: Juncos nest in forested mountains. They build their grass and twig nests on the ground and occasionally in a tree. Conservation: Though Juncos are still numerous, the American Breed-ing Bird Survey reports that Junco populations declined by about 50% from 1966 to 2015. (Photo: Dave Menke)

Gambel’s Quail (Callipepla gambelii) Gambel’s Quail live in D-H’s chaparral-covered hills. They form coveys of 12 or more birds that roost and nest in shrub thickets. Once, a family of mom, dad, and a line of seven chicks dashed across the

road in front of my car. I stopped, and just as the last of the chicks made it to safety, another chick entered the road far behind the others. Dad popped onto road, ran back, and pecked the slowpoke’s fluffy bot-tom, speeding its dash to catch up. The first covey to move into my place near the center of town came in 2014. The birds roost in a wood-pile I made with dead shrub and tree branches. Quail are too plump for standard feeder perches, so be sure to scatter a few seeds for them when you fill the feeder. Quail lives are short, usually less than 4 years. Nest: Grass and twigs on the ground in shrub thickets. Conservation: Gambel’s Quail numbers fluctuate along with winter rain and spring plant growth. As our global warming-imposed drought continues, the D-H quail population will shrink. (Photo: GR.)

Vermilion Flycatcher (Pyrocephalus rubinus) The flying insects this brilliant sky predator takes must be near-sighted and insensitive to color. Other flycatchers are of subdued color, but not this lit-tle fellow. Despite brilliant plumage, however, the male Vermilion Flycatcher is not overconfident. He courts his chosen mate by hovering and

singing to her high in the air and by offering her butterflies and other brilliant insects. Nest: The birds build loose nests of grass and twigs in trees. The male brings food to the female while she incubates two to four white or creamy eggs with bold dark blotches and small lighter spots. . Conservation: Vermilion Flycatchers are declining in Arizona and other parts of their range due to human destruction of the moist habitats they prefer. The birds are still abundant at many sites and are not an immediate conservation concern. However, without our atten-tion and care, they will continue to decline. (Photo: Charles J. Sharp.)

Appendix A. Sightings Record for Special Species Use for any species, but especially those marked with S1, E, or T in the check-lists. Enter as much of the information as possible. Attach photographs. Send the information to Garry Rogers (PO Box 1011, Humboldt, AZ 86329 or [email protected]). I will forward it to federal and state agencies. At present, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (http://www.fws.gov/endangered) would be best, but this might change. This is a long list. Try to get a photograph first and then record as much as you can.
