Achieving absolute control through every step of themanufacturing process is essential in order for theproduction of sanitary fittings to be successful. Byachieving such control, each fitting will performmore satisfactorily when incorporated into theprocess installation, reducing installation time, andensuring process integrity.

Tri-Clover offers the broadest range of products andinterior surface finishes for the biopharmaceuticalindustry. Interior surface finishes are available froma 10Ra electropolished to a 32Ra mechanically

polished. All of the products manufactured by Tri-Clover for the biopharmaceutical industryare manufactured to the exacting standards dictated by the industry.

In order to consistently maintain, or exceed these standards, quality must be designed into theentire manufacturing process. Our manufacturing facilities are certified to conform to theinternationally accepted quality management system, ISO 9001, and is designed to set systemquality requirements and ensure that they are met. The documented system is continuouslymonitored, through internal and external audits, to assure continuous improvements andadherence to the process.

Assurance of quality starts with the selection of raw materials. Our advanced manufacturingtechniques enable us to meet or exceed the industry’s highest standards of dimensional toleranceand surface finish. 100% visual inspection at every step along the manufacturing processensures consistency of quality. Statistical analyses applied to sophisticated stylus measurementprocedures assess compliance to outside diameter circularity. Undoubtedly, Tri-Clover fittingsare vital to the success of your processing system. Here are some further reasons why:

Controlled Metallurgyn The AISI 316L alloy used by Tri-Clover is specifically balanced for weldability, creating

excellent weldability in manufacturing and during installation.

n Sulfur controlled to 0.005-0.017% on all weld ends,allowing for consistent and high quality orbitalwelding. AISI 316L specifications permits up to0.030% sulfur. The presence of sulfur has a negativeimpact on weld quality.

n Reliable batch-to-batch consistency leads to excellentconsistency of orbital welds.

Traceabilityn All heat numbers are permanently pin-stamped on each

component of every fitting.

n All biopharm fittings are fully heat traced back to theoriginal stainless steel heat for weld documentation/validation.

n Material Test Reports (MTR's) are delivered with thematerial upon request.

n MTR's are kept permanently on file at Tri-Clover, andcan be accessed by the heat number on the part.

n Parts are also marked with the material designation(316L) and the Tri-Clover logo to verify authenticity.

Surface Finishn Mechanical polishing and electropolishing available.

n In-house electropolishing capability allowing Tri-Clover to maintain control of thequality at all times.

n In order to ensure that the surface of the fitting is properly prepared and in the propercondition, tubular products are mechanically polished prior to the electropolishingoperation.

n Ra guaranteed as maximum (not average) which guarantees the surface finish over theentire ID of the part. This exceeds BPE-97 requirements.

n Mechanical polishing consists of abrasive polishing, not buffing. Abrasive polishing ismuch more effective than buffing because it removes metal, creating an open andcleanable surface. Buffing merely moves metal around, trapping inclusions, creatingsub-surface voids, and masking surface defects. Tri-Clover also does not use buffingcompounds, as they can become embedded into the surface of the part.

MarkingsEach fitting is marked to show the following:

n Heat number on each component part of the fitting if more than one heat is used.

n Material type.

n Manufacturer’s logo.

n ASME BPE-97, if applicable.

n Internal surface symbol using the appropriate BPE specification.

Note: In some instances, due to the size of the component, the heat number may be presentedin the form of a code.

ASME BPE 1997In 1997, the American Society of Mechanical Engineers published a standard for fittings to beused in the biopharmaceutical industries (ASME BPE-1997). These standards define pressurerating, marking, materials, metal thickness, fitting dimensions, tests, tolerances, welding ends,hygienic clamp ends, heat treatment, surface condition, and packaging. Any item that isgoverned by a specific standard has the appropriate standard next to the product code (e.g.B2CMP is a 90° elbow with clamp ferrules at each end and is governed by standard ASME-BPE-97, DT-16). Where a standard is referenced, that Tri-Clover product will meet or exceedthat standard.

Dimensions and Tolerancesn All Tri-Weld fittings have weld-ends to allow for orbital welding.

n The squareness of the face-to-tangent is carefully monitored to allow for orbital weldingwithout the use of tack-welding.

n Wall thickness tolerances are set and maintained to comply with ASME-BPE-97.

n After forming, all tubular fittings undergo a resizing operation to ensure dimensionalaccuracy before facing and finishing operations. The sizing technique employed variesaccording to the shape and dimension of the specific fitting.

Heat Treatmentn All cold formed fittings are heat treated to relieve

stresses, and to maintain tolerances over time.

n Heat treatment eliminates the delta-ferrite inthe welds, lessening the risk of corrosion and

contamination in the process.

Packagingn All biopharm fittings are end-capped to protect

the weld-end or ferrule face from damage.

n All biopharm fittings are individually heat-sealedin plastic bags to protect the O.D. from damageduring shipping and to keep the fittings cleanand dry.

n The bags are labeled with the part number andheat numbers to facilitate identification of the part and the finish code.

Sanitary FittingsIn addition to our range of fittings for the biopharmaceutical industry, we have the traditionalrange of 304 and 316L stainless steel fittings for sanitary and food industry applications. Thisrange includes both mechanically polished (32 Ra) and unpolished products in the Tri-Clamp,Tri-Weld and Bevel Seat lines.

AL-6XN® AlloyMany Tri-Clamp and Tri-Weld fittings are also available in AL-6XN “super austenitic” alloy.These fittings have a higher resistance to crevice corrosion, pitting and/or stress corrosioncracking than traditional 316L components, thus lowering overall system costs in difficultapplications. (AL-6XN is a registered trademark of Allegheny Ludlum Corp.).

Tri-Weld® fittings and Tri-Clamp® fittings are available in both fractional (½" and ¾", 12.7and 19.0 mm) sizes and integral (1" to 4", 25.4 to 101.6 mm) sizes in type 316L StainlessSteel. These fittings are available in a variety of ID and OD surface finishes, each identifiedby a code. Surface finish codes are shown in the Surface Finish Descriptions Table onpage 6. A12MPS Swivel Joint

The Swivel joint consists of a PTFE insert that sets inside a modified 13MHHM Tri-Clamp.The insert holds the mating Tri-Clamp ferrules (ferrules not included) and a PTFE gasket asthe liquid seal. The nature of the PTFE insert and gasket allows the ferrules to rotateindependently of each other and of the orientation of the clamp.

Swivel joints are intended for use ONLY in LOW TEMPERATURE & PRESSUREapplications, such as diverting out of a process line from one tank to another adjacent vessel.NOT intended for use in general clamp applications.

SPECIAL NOTE CONCERNING THE LIMITED USE OF PTFE GASKETS:

Pressure Service Ratings shown on pages 38 & 39 for Tri-Clover clamps DO NOT APPLY to 1" (25.4mm) and above Tube OD sized connections incorporating any gaskets of PTFE material. As PTFEmaterial by nature is virtually incompressible and tends to "cold flow" under normal operating conditions,PTFE gaskets, when used with any standard clamp, are likely to leak at pressures far below these publishedservice ratings. We do not recommend their use at temperatures above 200°F (93°C).

To avoid possible leakage problems, we highly recommend consulting Tri-Clover before considering theuse of PTFE material. Our past experience has shown that in the majority of product applications, PTFEis not required.

Please contact us for specific test ratings on PTFE materials, and to discuss other viable alternatives.

Due to the recessed, full containment design of Fractional Sized Tri-Clamp® end connections, the abovelimitations do not apply to Tri-Clamp® Fractional Sized ½-¾" (12.7-19.0 mm) Tube OD fittings andconnections.

The hanger portion of the above assemblies was designed so that two basic hangers coverthe complete range of sizes. By using rubber insert pads, the smaller of the two hangers canbe used on 1½” (38.1mm), or 2” (50.8mm) sizes, the larger on the 2½” (63.5mm) and 3”(76.2mm).

n To increase from 1½” (38.1mm) to 2” (50.8mm), or from 2½” (63.5mm) to 3”(76.2mm), order inserts A24FCF-2-08 (for BUNA) or A24FCF-2-08-SFY (forViton).

n To decrease from 2” (50.8mm) to 1½” (38.1mm), or from 3” (76.2mm) to 2½”(63.5mm), order inserts A24FCF-1½-08 (for BUNA) or A24FCF-1½-08-SFY(for Viton).
