What is biomass? Biomass is the set of organic matter from an
animal or vegetable origin after a natural or artificial transformation.
It comes from:– Crops grown specially to produce energy.– Waste products from agriculture and industry.– Rubbish.
Uses
Burned to produce energy (electricity or hot water).
Converted into a liquid called a biofuel; one type is biodiesel, which is used in cars.
More advantages It is renewable energy source.
It does not increase global warming.
It uses waste products.
It is a cheap and readily available source of energy.
More disadvantages It is less polluting than fossil fuels,
but it can still produce atmospheric pollution.
The amount of energy produced is quite small so large amounts of biomass are needed.
