DING CHENG (DERRICK) CHAN

Dr. Ding-Cheng (Derrick) Chan is the director of the Department of Geriatrics and Gerontology and clinical associate professor of Internal Medicine at the National Taiwan University (NTU) Hospital in Taipei, Taiwan. He got his medical degree from NTU College of Medicine in 1986 and PhD degree in gerontology and long-term care from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health in 2003. He received his internal medicine residency training at the Greater Baltimore Medical Center and fellowship training at the Harvard geriatric fellowship program in the United States of America. His research team had one research focus on overall drug-related problems, polypharmacy, medication adherence, and potentially inappropriate medications (PIM) with development of PIM-Taiwan criteria. Another major research field is osteoporosis. He participated in the process of developing the Taiwan Osteoporosis Practice (TOP) guideline to be accepted for publication at the National Guideline Clearinghouse. A summary of guideline which he co-authored was recently published in the JBMM. Using public database, he also published a report that age-adjusted hospitalization rate for hip fracture was declining 2.7% annually in Taiwan. In 2014, he plays a central role in developing the “Fracture Liaison Services” at the National Taiwan University Hospital and its BeiHu branch. The two programs would be submitted for the Capture the Fracture Best Practice Recognition. He also actively engaged in academic societies including being the secretary general, and board supervisor for the Taiwanese Osteoporosis Association, board member of the Taiwan Association of Geriatrics and Gerontology, and executive secretary of the International Affair Committee of the Taiwan Society of Internal Medicine. He was promoted as Fellow of American College of Physician in 2013.


MANJU CHANDRAN

Dr Manju Chandran (MD, FACP, FACE, FAMS, CCD) is board certified in Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism. She is an elected member of the Committee of Scientific Advisors (CSA) of the International Osteoporosis Foundation the Vice-Chairman of the Chapter of Endocrinology of the College of Medicine, Singapore, member of the Editorial Board of the Journal of the ASEAN Federation of Endocrine Societies (JAFES) and the immediate past President of the Endocrine and Metabolic Society of Singapore (EMSS). She also serves on the executive committee of the Osteoporosis Society of Singapore (OSS), played a key role in the launching of the Singapore FRAX (R) model and is an elected member of the Asia Pacific Panel of the International Society of Clinical Densitometry (ISCD). Her research interests include Secondary Osteoporosis, Epidemiology and Pharmaco-compliance of Osteoporosis, Renal Transplant Bone Disease and Rare Metabolic Bone Diseases. One of her recent studies on pharamaco-compliance of Osteoporosis recently won the IOF-ESCEO Young Investigator Award for 2013. She has widely published in international peer-reviewed journals and has been an invited speaker at numerous local, regional and international conferences in the field of Osteoporosis and Bone Metabolism.

He started his residency in orthopedic surgery in 1996, and from 1998 to 2003, his residency in family medicine at the Taipei Veterans General Hospital, and became an attending physician of the Department of Family Medicine in 2003. In 2003 Dr. Chen became of Director in Community Medicine and Geriatric Medicine of Taipei Municipal Yang-Ming Hospital. In 2005, he was invited to the University of Oxford as a Visiting Scholar in Department of Clinical Gerontology. Dr. Chen became the Director of Center for Geriatrics and Gerontology, Taipei Veterans General Hospital in 2006 and the Executive Secretary of Aging and Health Research Center of National Yang Ming University in 2011. In 2002, Dr. Chen became the lecturer in Family Medicine at the National Yang-Ming University, the assistant professor in Family Medicine at the National Yang-Ming University in 2007, obtained his associate professorship in 2010, and became full professorship in 2014. Dr. Chen is the editorial board members of several local and international journals, including Archives of Gerontology and Geriatrics, Journal of Metabolic Syndrome, Journal of Gerontology and Geriatrics Research, Journal of Korean Geriatrics Society, Case Reports in Medicine and associate editor of Journal of Nutrition, Health and Aging, BMC Geriatrics, Frontiers in Geriatric Medicine, and Journal of Frailty and Aging. He has published over 180 peer-reviewed articles in the fields of geriatrics and gerontology. Dr. Chen’s research work is focused in several domains: (1) frailty and sarcopenia, (2) insulin resistance and metabolic resistance of the older people, and (3) age-friendly healthcare systems, including long-term care and dementia care. In 2009, Dr. Chen founded the Asia Pacific League of Clinical Gerontology and Geriatrics and became the founding chairman. This organization successfully invited research resources from Taiwan, Japan, South Korea, Singapore, Indonesia, China and the United Kingdom to promote international research activities and the Asia Pacific League of Clinical Gerontology and Geriatrics published an international journal “Journal of Clinical Gerontology and Geriatrics” in 2010.

Career Summary: Prof Daly has 20 years of experience in conducting human clinical and health promotion trials in both children and older adults in the area of exercise and nutrition and the interaction of these two factors for preventing and managing chronic diseases such as osteoporosis, sarcopenia and type 2 diabetes. He is currently Associate Head of School Research, Chair of Exercise and Ageing and Co-leader of the Clinical and Biomedical Research Group within the Centre for Physical Activity and Nutrition Research at Deakin University. He received his PhD in 1998 and was awarded a 3-year NHMRC Early Career fellowship in 2001 followed by a 5-year NHMRC Career Development Award in 2006. From 2008-2010 he was the Director of Research and Associate Professor within the Department of Medicine at Western Health, The University of Melbourne. He was recruited back to Deakin in 2011 where is currently leads a team of 20, which include 4 post-doctoral fellows and 6 PhD students.

Publications: Prof Daly has published 1 book titled ‘Optimizing bone mass and strength: The role of physical activity and nutrition during growth’ and has 90 career publications in high quality journals in his field (H-index 27, lifetime citations 2718 – 14/02/14). His yearly citations (from Scopus) have increased to >300 in the past 2 years. Many of his paper are the result of the long-term RCTs he developed and led or contributed to as a co-investigator [17 since 2004 (9 as CIA)]. According to Thomson ISI Web of Knowledge database, he is ranked number 1 in Australia for research on exercise and bone.

Recent contribution to knowledge, translation and clinical guidelines and practice: His community-based ‘Osteo-cise: Strong Bones for Life’ osteoporosis prevention exercise

program has received federal funding (via Osteoporosis Australia) for pilot implementation. He has played a key advisory role and co-authored several position statements related to

guidelines for vitamin D, calcium and exercise. His research into the benefits of exercise for the prevention of osteoporosis formed the basis

for an online calculator (which he created) available on the Healthy Bones Australia website to help consumers determine whether they are getting enough exercise to maintain healthy bones.

Grants: He has received funding for 39 competitive project grants (19 as CIA), which includes 14 category 1 grants totalling >$7.5 million ($3.8 million as CIA) from leading organisations such as NHMRC, ARC, Diabetes Australia, Heart Foundation, ANZ Trustees and MLA. He is currently CIA on two NHMRC project grants focusing on the effects of exercise and falls prevention and type 2 diabetes, and a MLA grant examining the effect of resistance training and dietary protein on muscle and cognitive health. He is also an AI on a NHMRC CRE grant investigating the effects of sedentary behaviour on musculoskeletal health and function. He has received considerable cash/in-kind industry support (∼$1.8M) from partners such as MG Nutritionals, YMCA, Omniblend, Ostelin and Blackmores, and has been awarded 16 internal grants (>$250K) and two equipment grants ($199K).

International/national profile: He has received 11 keynote/plenary and 5 invited presentations to speak at international conferences/symposia in France, Switzerland, USA, Canada, Vietnam, Malaysia and the Philippines on the topic of exercise and nutrition for bone and muscle health. This includes the 2014, 2009 and 2006 American Society of Bone and Mineral Research (ASBMR) and 2012 American Geriatric Society Annual meeting and the 2010 IOF World Congress on Osteoporosis. He has been invited to chair sessions at major international meetings, including the World Congress on Gerontology and Geriatrics in Seoul and the Annual American Society of Bone and Mineral Research (ASBMR) Scientific Meeting in the USA. He is currently on the Department of Health, Victorian Allied Health Research Working group and is advising the Department of Health and Australian Bureau of Statistics on the vitamin D results from the National Health Survey. He has also been invited to serve as an advisor for Danone, Fonterra, Ostelin, Abbotts and Sports Dietitians Australia where he has provided expert advice for their nutrition health research and consumer education programs.


Awards: He and his team have received 30 peer reviewed awards since 1998, which includes 7 best paper awards at national/international conferences and several state/local government awards for community-based projects, including the 2007 Applied Research in Sport and Recreation Science Award from the Department of Planning and Community Development for their community exercise program for preventing osteoporosis (GENTS Osteoporosis Prevention Project). In 2009 he was awarded the Lorin Prentice Memorial Award from Arthritis Victoria for outstanding contribution in raising public awareness of musculoskeletal disease. His contribution to the sports medicine/science field was recognised by being appointment as a Fellow to the Australian Sports Medicine Federation.

The goal of the proposed research is to assess the extent to which bone material strength, assessed by a micro-indentation technology, will be associated with glycemia in adult men and women with a wide range of fasting plasma sugar levels. Secondary goals are to determine the extent to which BMS measured at the mid-tibial shaft are associated with BMD at the same site and at the spine, and hip and to determine the extent to which several known clinical predictors of fracture are associated with BMS. I have the expertise, experience, leadership, and motivation necessary to successfully carry out the proposed work. I have a broad background in endocrinology and specific training in calcium and bone metabolism. After a three-year endocrine fellowship at Harvard-Brigham and Women’s Hospital, I began my career as a clinical investigator at Tufts University. Over many years I have done research on the nutritional aspects of both bone and muscle health. A particular focus in recent years has been on identifying ways in which vitamin D may reduce risk of progression of prediabetes to type 2 diabetes. The currrent project ties these interests together and focuses on assessment of bone quality in adults throughout the full spectrum of glycemia. For this study we have modified DXA methodology to be able to reproducibly measure BMD at the precise tibial mid-shaft site where bone material strength will be measured. The Bone Metabolism Laboratory has worked together successfully on many clinical studies in the past is assembled again for this project. We are very pleased to have Dr. Mary Bouxsein as a team member on this project. She brings important expertise and experience with the micro-indentation methodology and data interpretation and is committed to training our team in the procedure. In summary, I have an established record of successful clinical investigation and I enthusiastically anticipate the opportunity to take the next step in an area of research that is promising and relevant to substantial numbers of adults with hyperglycemia. JOHN KANIS

Prof. John A. Kanis is Emeritus Professor in Human Metabolism, and Director, World Health Organization Collaborating Centre for Metabolic Bone Diseases, University of Sheffield, UK. He is the President of the International Osteoporosis Foundation. Prof. Kanis’ research interests are largely related to disorders of skeletal metabolism including osteoporosis, Paget's disease of bone, hyperparathyroidism, renal osteodystrophy and neoplasia affecting the skeleton. Contributions to research include cell biology, histomorphometry of bone, assessment and treatment of bone disorders, guideline development, health technology assessment, epidemiology and health economics. He is the Editor of Osteoporosis International and serves on the editorial board of several journals. He is the author of more than 900 papers, chapters and books on bone disease and metabolism. His current major interest is in the development of risk assessment algorithms and the formulation of practice guidelines in many regions of the world.

Entered Peradeniya medical faculty in 1978 and qualified with second class honors. Worked as an intern HO in National Hospital of Sri Lanka and then MO in the ETU before entering MD program. Qualified MD in 1989 proceeded to UK for PG education in 1990. Became MRCP in 1993 and returned to Sri Lanka in the same year. In 1993, joined the Department of Medicine, Galle. While working got promoted to Senior lecturer grade 11 and 1, then a merit promotion to Professor in Medicine 9 years ago. Spent one year in the Department of Medicine, Cambridge University, UK in 2000-2001 and underwent a training on research-related to osteoporosis and biostatistics. Awarded Fellowship of the Ceylon Collage of Physicians in 2009, Honorary Fellowship of the South African Collage of Physicians, Royal Australasian Collage of Physicians and Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons Pakistan in 2012. In March 2012 awarded PhD by the Erasmus MC in Rotterdam, Netherlands.

Main Area of Research: Osteoporosis and other metabolic bone diseases. In osteoporosis, major contributions in clinical densitometry, management of glucocorticoid-induced osteoporosis and hip geometry. Contributed to two major management guidelines on glucocorticoid-induced osteoporosis (first by the RCP London in 2002 and second by the International Osteoporosis Foundation in 2012.

Special interests: Diseases of the elderly, Evidence-based Medicine, medical writing and Critical appraisal of medical literature

XU LING

Dr. Xu Ling graduated from Peking Union Medical College (PUMC) in1970. From 1970-1978, as a doctor, she worked in Shenzha County Hospital in Tibet. She got a Master Degree of Public Health at the School of hygiene and Public Health of the John Hopkins University in the United States in 1989. Now she is a professor of OB/GYN in PUMC Hospital. She used to be the vice chairman of the Department of OB/GYN (1994-2004), the director of the Department of Science Research in PUMC Hospital (2000-2007) and the President of the Chinese Society of Osteoporosis and Bone Mineral Research, Chinese Association of Medicine (2004-2012). Dr. Xu Ling has been working in gynecology and obstetrics for over 40 years, with major interests in the field of female reproduction endocrinology and postmenopausal osteoporosis. Over 150 scientific papers have been published.

AMBRISH MITHAL

Career Highlights: Present position: Chairman, Division of Endocrinology and Diabetes, Medanta Medicity, Gurgaon, Delhi NCR. Has established a state- of- the- art, clinical service and research facility in one of India’s largest new, multispecialty hospitals (from Dec 2009 onwards).

Dr Mithal is Past President, Endocrine Society of India. He is a board member of the International Osteoporosis Foundation (IOF, Switzerland. He is the founder, Past President and currently Chief Advisor to the Indian Society Bone and Mineral Research (ISBMR).

Dr Mithal has been the recipient of numerous awards and fellowships. Prominent among these are the Fogarty Fellowship (Harvard Medical School), in 1992-93, Japan International cooperation Agency fellowship (Japan) in 1996, Boy Frame award of the American Society for Bone and Mineral Research (Adult Working Group) in 2004, IOF Amgen Health Professionals Award (for ISBMR) in 2005. He has also received IMA distinguished service and Doctor of the Year awards.

Dr Mithal has published numerous research papers, reviews and book chapters. He is on the editorial board of several national and international journals and is the Editor-in-Chief of Indian Journal of Endocrinology and Metabolism. In 2012 he received the Springer citation prize for his paper on global Vitamin D status.

His current areas of research interest include vitamin D nutrition in Indians, prevention of osteoporotic fractures, evaluation of newer therapies for diabetes, post-transplant diabetes, diabetes and heart disease, and metabolic impact of bariatric surgery. Dr Mithal is also national coordinator, steering committee member and principal investigator in several diabetes, thyroid and osteoporosis trials. His primary clinical focus is improvement in delivery of chronic care in the Indian setting.


TOSHITAKA NAKAMURA

He graduated the University of Tokyo, school of medicine, in 1973, and had the postgraduate training for orthopedic surgery at the university of Tokyo hospital. He had academic appointments as a lecturer of orthopedic surgery, Tokyo University Hospital in 1987-1990. Then, he was appointed as professor and chairman of orthopedic surgery, University Hospital of Occupational and Environmental Health in 1995-2013 and worked as the director of the hospital in 2008-2012. Currently he is the presidential special adviser of National Center for Global Health and Medicine from 2013. Current major areas of investigation are in osteoporosis, aging in skeletons, clinical trials of osteoporosis, and prevention of fracture. He has been involved in the publication of approximately 280 articles in peer-reviewed journals. His recent publication includes the clinical trials on the efficacy of weekly-PTH in the prevention of fracture in patients with osteoporosis and denosumab in Japanese patients with osteoporosis. He was the president of JOS from 2006-2010. He contributed in the nation-wide hip fracture registration project of Japan. He was a member of Committee of National Society (CNS) of IOF in 2002-2005 and currently a member of Committee of Scientific Adviser (CSA) of IOF. He had been a temporary adviser of WHO in 2003-2005. He has ever been a member of Editorial Board of JBMR and BONE, and is currently a member Editorial Board of International Osteoporosis.

A. Personal Statement Dr. Orwoll is Professor of Medicine and Attending Physician in the Bone and Mineral Section of the Division of Endocrinology, Diabetes, and Clinical Nutrition. He is an internationally recognized expert in the area of age related musculoskeletal change, particularly bone biology and metabolic bone disease. He has considerable experience in basic, clinical, and epidemiological research. Major areas of research interest include the epidemiology, etiology and therapy of osteoporosis in men, metabolic bone diseases and disorders of mineral metabolism, the evaluation of new diagnostics and therapeutics, and the effects of sex steroids and vitamin D on skeletal biology. Dr. Orwoll is also actively involved in more basic studies of the genetic determinants of skeletal phenotypes in human populations, the investigation of genes that affect bone mass, geometry and material properties in man and mouse, and the use of proteomics to develop new biomarkers for skeletal and muscle biology and disease. He has been the principal investigator for many projects supported by the NIH, VA and foundations. Dr Orwoll is the author of more than 350 peer reviewed publications, reviews, books, and book chapters. He is also an experienced leader in academic medicine, with extensive responsibility for clinical and translational research planning and management. He is the Associate Vice-President for Research at OHSU, Associate Dean for Clinical Research in the School of Medicine, and the Director of the Oregon Clinical and Translational Research Institute.

SRA 12-009 (Orwoll) 11/2012 – 03/2014 Merck Expanded Understanding of the Vitamin D Bioactivity In addition to serum 25OHD levels, knowledge of 25OHD, 1,25(OH)2D levels, VDBP levels, and VDBP genotypes (reflecting VDBP affinity) will provide a more complete and sensitive understanding of vitamin D effects, and considerably improve the associations of vitamin D to important outcomes (e.g. bone and muscle phenotypes). Specifically, that a multivariable model that includes 25OHD, 1,25(OH)2D and VDBP genotype more accurately predicts PTH levels and bone outcomes (BMD, BMD loss, fractures) than does total 25OHD alone. Role: subcontract PI 1 R01 AR063910 (Hewison) NIH/NIA DBP and the bioavailability and function of vitamin D The overall objective of the proposal will be to investigate the impact of DBP on the bioactivity of 25D using both mouse and human models. Studies using transgenic, knockout, and humanized mice will investigate how variations in the concentration and vitamin D metabolite binding affinity of DBP affect the response of these mice to 25D and 1,25D under conditions of vitamin D- sufficiency and -deficiency. Data from these experiments will then be related to studies in humans, where DBP concentration and binding affinity are strongly influenced by genetic variations in the DBP gene.

RENE RIZZOLI

Dr. René Rizzoli is an internist and endocrinologist, with a subspecialty focus on metabolic bone diseases, osteoporosis and disorders of mineral metabolism. He is presently professor of medicine at the University Hospital of Geneva, head of the service of bone diseases. Dr. Rizzoli is the former chairman of the Committee of Scientific Advisors of the International Osteoporosis Foundation. He is the chairman of the Scientific Advisory Board of the European Society for Clinical and Economic Aspects of Osteoporosis and Osteoarthritis, and co-chairing the scientific program committee of the annual IOF-ESCEO congress. He is involved in both basic and clinical research projects investigating hormone action, regulation of bone growth, pathophysiology of osteoporosis and of calcium and phosphate homeostasis disorders, and the role of nutrition, calcium, protein, bisphosphonates, selective estrogen modulators, parathyroid hormone, denosumab and strontium ranelate in the prevention and treatment of osteoporosis. Dr. Rizzoli is author of more than 600 scientific articles, editor-in-chief of Calcified Tissue International and Musculoskeletal Research and associate editor of Osteoporosis International.

Professor Seeman has worked in the field of osteoporosis in ageing for 30 years studying the epidemiology, pathogenesis, risk factors and treatment of fractures in advanced age in women and men of Caucasian and Asian origin. In studying the pathogenesis of bone frailty and in many disease states in advanced age, he signaled that fractures and osteoporosis in elderly men is a public health problem contributing one third of all hip fractures and one fifth of all spine fractures. He helped establish the Geelong Osteoporosis Study, a population based study running for over 15 years giving insights of worldwide significance into the morbidity, mortality, and health costs of osteoporosis. He demonstrated the importance of skeletal growth in structure as a forerunner of bone frailty in old age. His work illustrates the sex- and race-specific differences in bone structure responsible for differences in fracture patterns in women and men in Caucasians and Asian groups. His has emphasized the neglected and pivotal role of cortical bone decay in development of osteoporosis in old age as a major cause of bone fractures in old age. TIEZHENG SUN

Tiezheng SUN MD & PhD, born in 1973, Chief Surgeon, Associated Professor in Arthritis Clinic and Research Center, People’s Hospital, Peking University. Now, I am the founding member of Chinese osteoporosis foundation, editor of Chinese Journal of osteoporosis. In 1997, I graduated from Harbin Medical University (Master Degree in Clinic Surgery). In 2000, I got MD and PhD in Orthopedic surgery from Peking University. I became attending doctor in 2002, vice chief surgeon in 2007, associated professor in 2009, and chief surgeon in 2012. In my clinic field, I practiced more than 1000 cases of total joint arthroplasty, including knee and hip, mastering the surgical technique of total joint replacement in the patients of femoral neck fracture and femoral head necrosis, rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis. Also, I practiced more than 1000 cases of operations with arthroscopy, including meniscus repair, cartilage restoration, ACL or PCL reconstruction. In 2002, I had been to the Arthritis center, Beth Israel Hospital of New York City to be the clinic fellow for 3 months, learning total joint replacement and arthroscopy operative technique from Dr. Kasternbaum. In 2013, I had been to HSS to learn sports medicine for 2 months. In the field of scientific research, I had two grants funded by CNSF (Chinese Nature Science Fund), which were on the role of cadherin 11 in cartilage erosion mediated by synoviocytes in rheumatoid arthritis and molecular marker screening for chondrocyte transplantation. From Nov, 2004 to Jan 2006, I had been research fellow in MGH, Harvard University, committing research on subcellular distribution of the IGF Binding proteins in the bovine chondrocyte, which published in J Orthop Res 2008. In the field of clinic teaching, I adopted the principle of PBL and team-base study in orthopedic physical examination teaching, with the honor of "Excellent teacher" of our hospital in 2004. I also got the first prize in teaching competition in our hospital in 2002 and 2006. On the above clinic basis, I committed in the editing and publishing some works in Chinese, such as “Osteoporosis”,“Modern total joint arthroplasty“,“Arthritis Premium”,“Chinese rheumatism” and so on, also translating the works of “Surgery of knee(edited by John Insall)”,“Operative Arthroscopy” edited by John B. McGinty” into Chinese .

SHU TAKEDA

Shu Takeda was born in Tokyo Japan. He received the M.D. and Ph.D. degrees from University of Tokyo, Japan, in 1992 and 2002, respectively. He was an associate professor at Tokyo Medical and Dental University from 2004 to 2009 and at Keio University from 2009 to 2014 and moved as a professor of physiology and cell biology at Tokyo Medical and Dental University on 2014. He serves on editor of Bone and editorial board of Journal of Bone and Mineral Metabolism. He received many awards including president book award and young investigator’s award from ASBMR and a research award from Japanese Endocrine Society. His current research interests are molecular elucidation of the crosstalk between bone and other organs.

CHIH-HSING WU (PAULO)

Dr. Wu, also named as Paulo, graduated from the MD program at the Chinese Medical College in Taiwan in 1989. He now is the associate professor in National Cheng Kung University Hospital. He has been the visiting scholar at Kyoto Medical College in 2000 and a research fellow at the New York Obesity Research Center, body composition unit, Institute of Human Nutrition, Columbia University College of Physicians & Surgeons in 2005-2006. Dr. Wu is Board-certified in Family Medicine, Geriatrics, Obesity, Osteoporosis and special expertise in chronic disease and preventive medicine. Dr. Wu has special clinic of obesity and osteoporosis, the only one with both unique special clinic in Taiwan. He is an active council member of many medical associations in Taiwan. Dr. Wu got the CCD since 2002 and CDT since 2008 and devoted to promoting the concept of ISCD in Taiwan since then. He is the co-director of TOPTEAM (Tainan Osteoporosis Prevention, Treatment and Evaluation Associated Membership) and the director of ISCD course committee of the Taiwanese Osteoporosis Association. With his help, 21 ISCD courses, one body comp course and two ISCD/IOF courses with more than 2,400 attendee were successfully organized since 2002 in Taiwan. The WHO FRAX acknowledged his great contribution in the development of Taiwan FRAX in 2010. Recently, Dr. Wu successfully organized two international conferences for the consensus of position statement of ISCD and IOF/ISCD FRAX in Asia Pacific regions. He is now the board member of ISCD and Chair of ISCD Asia Pacific regions.


RONG SEN YANG

Rong-Sen Yang is Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at the National Taiwan University Hospital, Taipei, Taiwan. Professor Yang obtained his MD and PhD from the College of Medicine, National Taiwan University, and was awarded a post-doctoral fellowship at the University of California, Los Angeles, United States of America. Professor Yang is the current President of the Taiwanese Osteoporosis Association. He is active in a number of national and international associations including the past president of Taiwan Orthopedics Research Society, Council member of Taiwan Orthopaedic Association, council member of Formosa Association of Regenerative Medicine, full faculty of International Society of Clinical Densitometry, National delegate of Asia-Pacific Musculoskeletal Tumor Society, member of the International Society of Limb Salvage, the Orthopaedic Research Society and the American Society for Bone and Mineral Research. His research interests include musculoskeletal health and diseases; osteoporosis; physical therapy aspects of osteoporosis in men; osteoporosis drug discovery; bone cell biology; arthritis biology; as well as orthopaedics oncology. He has authored and co-authored more than 200 peer-reviewed articles, book chapters, guidelines and reviews in the field of osteoporosis, bone metastases and orthopaedics.


ROGER ZEBAZE

Dr Zebaze is a Medical Officer and a Senior Research Fellow in the Department of Medicine at Austin Health/University of Melbourne, Australia. He has published more than 30 peer reviewed papers in prestigious journals including TheLancet and the Journal of Bone and Mineral Research. His work is centered on the structural and biomechanical basis of bone fragility. His work was one of the first to identify intracortical remodelling producing porosity as the major source of age-related bone a target for the reversal of bone fragility. The quality of his research has earned him numerous awards including the TJ Martin Award, which is the most prestigious award given by the Australian and New Zealand Bone and Mineral Society, and the American Society Mineral Research Sun-Chi Harada Young Investigator Award in 2008. Dr Zebaze serves as a reviewer for all the main bone journals (JBMR, Bone, Osteoporosis International and Calcified Tissue International) and numerous granting bodies. He is the lead inventor of a method and system that allows the quantification of bone structural and material composition from images, in particular computed tomographic images. The new approach he has pioneered is now used worldwide providing new insights into the effect of various diseases and treatment on bone.


YANLING ZHAOROBIN

Dr. Zhao is from China. She graduated with honors from Bethune Medical University in Chang Chun, China in 1990. She then completed her residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology at the Sino-Japan Friendship Hospital in Beijing. Dr. Zhao has been an obstetrician and gynecologist for 23 years. She is the director of International Department of China Health Promotion Foundation, accomplishing the 1st White Paper of Osteoporosis in China with the support of IOF in 2009.

She has worked as an expert for 18 years with a focus on Endocrinology, infertility, menopausal problems, and postmenopausal osteoporosis. She has been leading the ISCD courses in China for 9 years. She has numerous professional memberships and has also published numerous papers and articles relating to Osteoporosis, Obstetrics and Gynecology in various journals and books.

In March 2007, she received the '2007 Clinician of the Year' award from the International Society for Clinical Densitometry.
