    utilized directly in h eating oil o r power gen. UOP also owns a Renewable Energ y &Chemicals business that produced green diesel using its Ecofining pro cess. UOP andVaper ma announced a par tn ership to bring Vaper mas po lymer membran e tech nology tothe ethano l industry, where it will reduce energ y consumption an d emissions for fo r first-generation ethanol , as well as cellulosic ethano l an d butanol.

    In 2006-09, Virgin Atlantic, Con tinental, Japan Air Lines an d Air New Zealan d and thegr oup as a whol e conducted a series of laborator y, gr ound and fl ight tests, indicating thattest fuels performed as well as or better than typical petrol eum-based Jet A. The testsrevealed that using the Bio-SPK fuel blends h ad no adverse effects on th e eng ines or theircomponents. They also sh owed that the fuels have an average 1.8 percent g reater energ ycontent by mass than typical petroleum-derived jet fuel.

    In 2009, at the Paris Air Sh ow Boeing and a series of par tners involved in fo ur biofuels-based test f lig hts releas ed the data from th e tes ts, an d said that with th e releas e th ey are oa path towards flig ht certification of biofuels as soon as late 2010.

    Future milestones:

    UOP expects to commence licensing its fuel technol og y in 2009, and s aid that it has alr eadcommenced advanced discussions with multiple potential licensees.

    The consistent messag e from airl ines and aircr aft manufacturers is that the certification obiofuels fo r reg ular commercial fl ig hts is in th e 2012/13 timel ine. Boeing spo kesmanTerrance Scott said that biofuels could be a regular source for jet fuel with 3-5 years, withalg ae becoming a common component in 8-10 years .

    Metrics: UOP said that it was modeling future r efineries for renewable jet fuel using a 60-150 Mgy scale, and said that whil e this was on ly a fraction o f the typical 4.2 bill ion g all onper year scal e of a typical o il r efinery th at the size was the most effective given the expected
