This week marks the end of an eleven week-long Term 1. By the end of this week, our school will publish the School Report for 2017, our School Plan for 2018-2020, and we will have completed the School Excellence Framework Self-Assessment Survey. All three documents are important aspects of the school planning cycle, and a great deal of work has been put into completing them. A lot of work has also been put into the Compressed Curriculum Review, and I will be pleased to announce the outcome of this process later this week in a letter to parents. I am confident that the process conducted will lead to a conclusion that places Billabong High School on the right path to maximise learning outcomes for students in future years.

I am very proud to announce that Ms Bindee Jobe was successful in her application for the position of Deputy Principal at Kooringal High School. As you may be aware, Ms Jobe has been relieving as Deputy Principal at Kooringal this year, and had previously relieved as deputy principal at Billabong High School and Wade High School. Ms Jobe’s broad educational experience led us to employ her in 2016 as a very strong candidate for Head Teacher English, but I wondered at the time whether her credentials and potential Page 1

would mean that her stay at Billabong could be relatively short. Ms Jobe proved her ability at Billabong High School, and very quickly proved her ability at Kooringal, impressing their school community so much so that she was appointed permanent Deputy Principal. Although it is disappointing to lose Ms Jobe, she had a very positive influence on our school community in the time that she was here. As I have learnt throughout my career, if a school hires talented staff and then fosters their ability, the school community needs to be aware that those talented staff members may be promoted out of the school. This promotion is a very healthy sign for the culture of professional development at Billabong High School. We wish Ms Jobe well in her future career!

A busy week will finish off a long and successful term. I look forward to this week’s school ANZAC ceremony on Thursday, and I look forward to large numbers of our students participating in ANZAC services during the school holidays. I wish all students, staff and parents a safe and enjoyable school holiday period.

BILLABONG HIGHLIGHTS

Davidson Shield Cricket On the 27th March The Davidson Shield Cricket team played Wagga High on the School Oval. Captain Tom Heriot won the toss and decided to send the visitors in to bat on a dewy outfield. There was a constant flow of early wickets before a number of lower order partnerships by the Wagga boys who were able to make their way to 200 before being bowled out in the 36th over. Riley Knobel was the pick of the Billabong bowlers taking four wickets for only 24 runs. He was supported well by Jake Thomas 3/27 and Jack Driscoll 2/37. Billabong began the chase losing four quick wickets in Newton, Heriot, Lezius and Wardius before Jack Driscoll (15) and Rory Jenkins (28) put on 43 for the 5th wicket. Unfortunately Billabong’s tail order failed to put up much of a defence against the strong Wagga High attack. The highlight was Jack Retallick’s textbook pull shot for four off Wagga’s opening bowler. Overall the boys played in the spirit of the game and should be proud of their efforts. Mr Dave Tassell

Girls Riverina Tennis Teams KnockoutOn Friday 6th April, Faith Doyle, Tess McGrath, Grace Doyle and I travelled to Albury to play in a Tennis Knockout Competition. Firstly, we played two doubles sets against Albury High, following a singles set each. We ended up 5-1 down for the day! Unfortunately James Fallon and Murray High had to forfeit so we had a very short day. Otherwise It was a great experience and an enjoyable day. Millie Kohlhagen Riverina Boys Tennis Teams KnockoutOn Friday April 6th, Sam Male, Will Male, Chas Retallick and I went to Albury to compete in the Riverina School Teams Tennis Knockout. We battled hard all day and won the first match against Corowa. We won both the doubles sets and all the singles sets fairly comfortably.

We then moved onto the second round and came up against James Fallon. They had some big guns (Steve Bowen’s son) on their side but they were no match for our boys as we got on top of them early and put them to sleep.The boys were through to the third and final round against Albury High. We had lost one and won one of the doubles sets, and were looking very

fatigued going into the singles. Sam battled against one of the best tennis players going around Albury but couldn’t get the job done. In the end Albury had the fresher legs and they put us out of our misery.A fantastic performance by all of the boys and they will certainly pull up sore the next day.Jack Driscoll Between The Rock and a Hard Place Last Tuesday, we set off to climb the mini Mt Everest- The Rock in order to prepare for our Bronze Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Lets just say that words were said, limits were tested, To conquer this challenge, we had to walk against crumbling rocks, ghastly winds and scorching heat. It was the longest 6.2kms of my life and in the end, we were lucky to make it ..... I’m being a little dramatic. In reality, I just have a wonderful relationship with food and not physical activity. but for all you sporty children or those wanting to give it a go, I highly recommend it. Margaret Jamieson

Billabong Highlights

Year 10Last week all Year 10 students were involved in individual goal setting interviews with Mrs Toogood and Mr Pilikas. Students spoke about what goal they would like to achieve this year and the steps, skills and knowledge required to achieve their goals. Goals were wide and varied and included gaining apprenticeships, improving their grades, becoming healthier, sporting goals and joining the army. It was an important process for many students as they had to reflect for the first time on themselves, what is required to achieve their goals, and for students to take responsibility and start implementing steps to achieve their goals. It was an invaluable process as it highlighted some areas of learning that require strengthening. Thank you to Mrs Toogood, who with her careers knowledge was able to emphase the importance of completing work experience, the opportunities that stem from that and for some students, the steps for attaining apprenticeships. Riverina Netball Team Congratulations to Lucy Way on her selection in the Riverina Netball Team. This is a highly competitive team and is difficult to gain selection. The Riverina Netball side is usually made up of extremely skilled Year 11 and 12 students. For Lucy to be selected in Year 10 is testament to her ability and attitude. Congratulations Lucy. We look forward to hearing how the team goes later in the year.
