Car of the Month

B3 FOR MGBa SAGA

by Bill Greenan

It all started on the drive home from vol-unteering at the NH Motor Speedway inSeptember 2012. Right on Route 106 Ispotted a little red roadster in a used-carlot off the main drag. It was a sweet look-ing ’78 MGB,(LBC) with the top downand a very shiny paint job.

Now you have to understand that I hadnever even considered purchasing a “for-eign car.” My first car was a ’35 Ford, 3-window coupe. After that it was USAmade cars only. Of course, coming froma union-membership family carried a lotof clout when it came to buying anything.

When I got home I told my wife, Pam,about the LBC with a standard shift. Pamhad learned how to drive on a “3 on thetree” – her little brother gave her lessons.Even though she converted toan automatic drive over theyears since, she alwaysloved/missed “shifting.”

So off we went for a look &see. I had already kinda fallenin love with it and I thoughtPam was going to love it too.It didn’t take too long for abig smile to come across herface.

I went ahead and had mymechanic, Sterling, take alook. He pulled a wheel andwe looked it all over. The cardidn’t actually belong to thedealer. It was on consignment throughone of the salesmen. Since it didn’t be-long to the dealer, they would not putplates on it so Sterling drove it around thelot a couple of times and thought that ev-erything seemed okay.

After some telephone tag with the sales-man and consignee, we settled on a priceand I called Sterling who agreed to go

with me to pick it upand drive it home.Since the dealer stillcouldn’t offer a set ofplates, I took oneplate off the front ofmy truck and put it onthe back of the LBC.The salesman washaving a fit, but I fig-ured I could take therisk. Sterling followedme close without in-cident and there itwas - in our very own driveway!

Sterling, Pam and I were admiring it whenSterling asked, “Where are you going tokeep it?” Oh yeah, that. Hummm. I re-ally hadn’t thought about it and I quicklylearned that it was a requirement in orderfor the LBC to be insured.

Our house did not come with a garage. But I have two small barns, (Bl and B2 -Building 1 & 2) that I had built over theyears. That is where we store the gardentractor, snow blower, summer porch fur-niture, garden stuff, kindling wood, off-season snow tires, camping equipment,

lawn chairs and a spare clothes dryeracquired at a yard sale “on the cheap.”So, there was no place for indoor storageand security for the LBC.

What a quandary! Where would I build asuitable structure? We had the 300 footdriveway and upper parking paved - andeven though we have 5½ acres, it is alluphill, except for the area west of theparking area. Of course, it was a three

foot ravine where melting snow runs likea river in the Spring.

Well, I called my neighbor, Mac, who is alogger, firewood provider, snow plower, longhorn cattle breeder, chicken farmerand all-around good guy for advice. Iwanted to build a small structure in theravine without creating a lake behind it inthe Spring. He told me to fill it up with bigstone, then smaller stone, and to top it offwith yet smaller stone. ‘Sounded good tome.

I just happened to have had 25 to 35 bigarchitectural concrete blocks given to me

on a job site where I previ-ously worked. Those, alongwith an unending supply offield stones I had movedaround the property for thepast 20 years, would“shirley” be enough for thejob. But first, I had to dig theholes that would be the foun-dation for the LBC small polebarn I had in mind, whichwould be designated as“B3.”

I’m not sure if you have evertried to dig six holes in a pat-tern correctly to hang a

building onto in the State of New Hamp-shire. Let me say, as an original native ofwestern New York, I thought it wouldn’tbe such a big deal. WRONG!

I went to see Sterling. He had told methat he had a post hole digger. A-Yup! Istarted digging. It was tough but I made

Welcome our NewestMembers

Andrew & Katherine Estes1986 TVR 280i, V8

T5 ConversionI am writing this in a room at the BarHarbor Inn where I am staying with theJaguar Association of New England(JANE) on a weekend outing. I’m afraidI am not representing BCNH well. Notonly was I embarrassed by the fact thatneither the Mark IX nor the XJ6 was ableto make the trip, but the TR-2000 (theonly non-Jaguar on the trip) only got asfar as Bucksport before an ignition prob-lem forced it to make the trip home onthe trailer. Oh well. As I told the otherJANE members, on any British Car Clubouting somebody has to break down andI “took the bullet” so none of them hadto.

It worked. There were no other break-downs all weekend.

On the subject of “technical problems,”you will find pictures of the BCNH SpringTech Session elsewhere in this issue.Held at the Historic Motor Sports facility(aka the BCNH Clubhouse) at 174Raymond Road in Candia, there werebetween 40 and 50 BCNH Members andT-Party Members in attendance to get atruly comprehensive review of manualtransmission function – and mal-function– courtesy of Master Transmission Engi-neer and Technician Terry Haines.

Terry was brought from England to theUS by Ford to design the transmission forthe Ford Contour “World Car” and is nowin the process of relocating to NewHampshire. It is comforting to know thatwe are going to have such a knowledge-able and capable a “transmission man” inour backyard – and in our Club.

You will not be surprised to hear that manyof those attending stayed around forseveral hours after the formal TechSession was over. It was interesting towatch as the various “discussion groups”formed – and then re-formed – duringthat time. As I looked around the build-ing there were usually several separategroups in animated conversations, but thepeople in each of those groups wasconstantly changing. It was interest-ing to watch as every few minutes twoor three people would break off from onegroup and wonder over to join with an-other.

Of course some of that “movement” in-cluded moving over to the “buffet tables”that were laden with all kinds of pot-luckgoodies brought by the members. A spe-cial thanks goes out to Paul Karle forbringing his gas grille to cook theburgers and dogs which Norma Karlebought and brought and that were paidfor fr om the T-Party Club tr easury(thank you Judy Krongelb.)

Check out the Events calendar on thewww.BCNH.org website to see all of the

“opportunities” that there are to get to-gether with fellow BCNHers – and mem-bers of other car clubs – to enjoy yourcar(s) and their fellowship. We have atleast one event scheduled for every week-end of June – and two or three thingsscheduled for some weekend. I invite youto pick the ones that are of most interestto you and to participate in as many aspossible. I specifically recommend theBritish-by-the-Sea gathering on June 1st

because Riley will be the FeaturedMarque and you will have an opportunityto see more Rileys in one place that youhave ever had – or are ever likely to haveagain. And, you should most certainly notmiss The Queen’s Birthday Party atPaul and Doris Karle’s on June 21st.That is always a great time.

As we have said many times before, thereason this club has so many interest-ing things to do is because its mem-bers do so many interesting things. Please help us to keep that interest levelhigh.

The members who have the most fun arethe ones who are there to get in on it.

So Saith Prime Minister Bob

John Bowe’sExeter Drive

by Sue MacDuff

On April 27th we met at John Bowe’sshop, Underground Cycle in HampsteadNH for an area drive. Despite the dismalweather, 17 cars showed up and mostwere British! John led us on the drive withhis Mayflower followed by two non Brit-ish Cars, a Porsche and BMW Z road-ster. He was very proud that his May-flower kept ahead of a Porsche and ourBMW. We were not so happy being infirst gear! John being the free spirit thathe is made up parts of the drive as wewent along and several times participantswent astray but soon caught up. Lunchwas at the Holy Grail.

Funkhanacontinued

Saturday started off with the Funkhanaand it was a blast! A Funkhana is de-scribed as “parking lot games with cars”.There were six challenges ranging fromthe passenger holding an egg (tennis ball)out the window on a spoon while thedriver drove through some cones to thepassenger snagging fish with a fishing poleand dropping them in a bucket. A lot ofimagination and work went into this. Eachevent was timed and you were penalizedif you touched a cone. Eleven cars wereentered: Morgans, MGs, Volkswagensand a 1929 Bugatti. Guess the MMSCCis like BCNH, you don’t have to have aBritish Car, you just have to like them, and it’s all about having fun.

This event took place at Owls HeadTransportation Museum in Owls HeadMaine. We wandered through this firstclass museum. Many of the displayschange and at this time, there were manyMGs, some very unique. There are air-planes, a Gypsy wagon, fire engines, mo-tor cycles and cars. One car looked likea giant beetle; only nine were made. Ondisplay was a Bentley; from the firewall

back, the exterior was leather!

After a nice box lunch we did the 60 milerally along some very scenic roads. Thiswas a very well thought out event withsome interesting things to spot. Some easywere and some not so easy. On one veryshort stretch of road was the question,“What are the big animals?” We didn’tsee any small animals never mind any bigones. There was a fence that was solidso you could not see what was behind itwith a sign out front that was in three parts“ele..pha..nts”. We didn’t get it! We metin Camden at the end for a lovely dinnerby the water and the awards. Bob andKim got a third in the rally.

Bill and I took both Sunday and Mondayfor a nice leisurely drive home, staying

with friends in Harpswell, Maine for Sun-day night. Before leaving Camden wetook the car up Mt Battie which I hadbeen wanting to do. Only 1½ miles to thetop which normally has a nice view ofCamden Harbor but was in the clouds onthat day. We wandered along back roadsand visited places that we had been inthe past and enjoyed. I was delighted thatmy little car performed flawlessly. Theonly problem was the weather. Both Fri-day and Saturday were cool but rain free.On Sunday we were suddenly in the midstof a very bad hail storm that put aboutone inch of hail on the road. For about anhour we were in and out of rain and hail.Got lost on Monday but in a nice way onvery nice roads.

June Events

by Sue MacDuff

June is one busy month! There’s some-thing every weekend and sometimes sev-eral events at once. Too much of a goodthing? Never! “British by the Sea” hostedby The CT MG Car Club in WaterfordCT is on June 1st. Although not an officialBCNH event we consider it one, as manyof our members go each year and the CTclub supports our Show Of Dreams. Aswe get closer to the event, there will be aposting of where members are staying andwho is going and when so we can drivetogetherhttp://www.ctmgclub.com/BBtS.html

Our Saturday Breakfast Drive will be tothe Covered Bridges of Southwestern NHon June 14th. We will have our annualQueen’s Birthday Party at the home ofPaul and Doris Karle 256 Mason Road,

Car of the Monthcontinued

good progress. I dug six holes - some-what in line and ready for some 6x6 postsand concrete. I built lots of braces to keepeverything “plumb.” Now I was ready todump all the rubble into the ravine andthen order a load of two-inch crushedstone and then some ¾ crushed stone tofinish it off.

I called Mac, who is a logger, firewoodprovider, snow plower, longhorn cattlebreeder, chicken farmer and all-aroundgood guy to bring in the stone I needed. Imentioned the dimensions between my6x6s and that I wasn’t sure that his 10-wheeler would go between them. I sug-gested he use the smaller three yard truckthat he uses to deliver my wood. He saidto me, “You’re starting to be a pain in thearse. The truck will fit.”

A day or two later I came home and therewas the 10-wheeler parked between myposts. The load of stone was dumped andone post was snapped off about a footabove the ground, which was now cov-ered with two inches of stone.

What could I say? I had to fix it. Therewas enough of the post sticking up that Iwas sure I could sister it back on all foursides with some 2x6 stock. It worked justfine. Next came a couple loads of ¾ stonein the smaller truck and I was ready tostart hanging a building.

This is where my friend over on Route126came into play. George runs a saw milland does hay harvesting for a living. Youcan get all the fresh sawed Douglas Firyou want at a fair price. I figured what Ineeded and soon had some frameworkthat looked pretty good. Then I sheeted itwith rough cut lumber and whateverGeorge had that I could use. Later, ba-tons covered all the joints. The roof wouldbe corrugated metal.

After B3 was finished, Pam insisted thatwe stain it. During the process we had areal good loud fight over staining tech-niques. It made our neighbor proud. Butwe got it done together.

So, that is pretty much the story. All in allit turned out nice. It is sound and dry andsecure and the insurance company washappy. Our LBC resides happily in B3.We can’t wait to drive it!

PS. By the way, Mac never charge mefor the stone. He’s a good guy.

May is the first month of our local“CruzIn” here in Peterborough. They areheld the second Sunday of the month from9:00 AM to 1:00 PM in Depot Squarethrough September. There is also a nicelittle Antique Market, some restaurantsare open as well as some stores that openat 11:00. We are delighted that we usu-

Cruise Events ally get quite a few British cars. Alwayswe are engaged in conversation withsomeone who has had one or would likeone. It was quite a surprise to see KlausSteinbrueck drive in with his lovely yel-low Morgan! I encourage our membersto go to some of these events. It’s a niceway to talk up our cars and our club aswell as meet some really nice people.Again this year, the Minute Man Airfield

in Stow, MA will have their “Wings andWheels” events on Thursday eveningsfrom 5:00 to 8:00. British Car Days willbe June 12th, July 17th and August 14th.This is a lovely one-hour drive fromPeterborough along back roads. Last year,a group of us met at Kimball’s in Jaffreyon Wednesday evenings. Maybe there isa cruise night in your area:

Tech SessionBy John Giese

The annual tech session was attended byabout 50 members. Thanks to TerryHaines, who had a great presentation us-ing slides and transmission parts. We nowknow all about the internal workings ofour manual transmissions. Thankfully,Terry and Penny Haines are in the pro-cess of moving to New Boston, NHwhere they will open a transmission re-pair business. After viewing this techsession I now know that the repair or re-build of the transmission is one part ofmy MGB that I will leave to a profes-

sional. I do remember that Terry advisedthat the transmission be left in neutralwhile the car is in storage. That is be-cause leaving it in gear keeps the springsin a stretched condition.

Thanks also to Bob Mitchell for the useof his facilities at Historic Sports Motors.HSM provided the hotdogs and hamburg-ers while attendees brought side dishesthat made for a delicious lunch.
