I am not going to dedicate this space to the disap-pointing news about one of our quarterbacks being dis-missed from the football team or the exciting news of twoof our teams winning titles this weekend. Well, actually Iwill take room to congratulate the Equestrian team for aNational title and the men’s golf for their winning the SECtitle. It was pretty spectacular to follow Coach Haack’sgolfers on the Seaside Course at Sea Island Club on an ab-solutely gorgeous day Saturday. There were lots of us onhand to cheer them along. My husband, Vance, was thereagain Sunday to see the fellas with their trophy after a tightrace to the title.

Ok, back to my topic for today, ‘Not Since You.’What I want to share with you in this space is my

movie endorsement and the reason it is relevant to you asa Bulldog fan is that the movie is set in our beloved Athens. You must see this film! The cast is great, the story is mov-ing, the cinematography is poignant and of course the set-ting is perfect!

Athenian, movie producer and familiar face from Ept-ing Events and Harry’s Pig Shop Ashley Epting was com-mitted to bringing a film to Georgia after he graduated fromNYU in 2000. Epting was attracted to the script theyadapted for ‘Not Since You’ for multiple reasons such as theplot of friends reuniting after college at a wedding after theyhave all evolved and changed over time as well as it refer-encing them in New York during 9/11 and the emotionsfrom watching the twin towers toppling, which Epting alsoexperienced. Like Epting, I felt an incredible relation tothe plot and characters since I am in my mid thirties andthere is a connection to your friends but the relationshipschange, the issues change and the way you look at lifechanges. The film delves into this in a beautiful way.

But what I loved most was the sense of place and thatthe movie was set in Athens, Georgia and it spotlighted ourarea so well. You will recognize the extras as folks you seearound town and of course you will see our landmarks likethe University of Georgia Arches, Jot’Em Down BBQ andthe tree that owns itself.

I was so thrilled with all of the little details they incor-porated into the film to make it authentically Southern andAthenian. All I saw them drink was Coca Colas and Ter-rapin beer! They got a little moonshine and Nascar in themix. I am pretty sure I saw some Lilly Pulitzer sundressesat the wedding reception, which exudes summertime inthe South. And the Athens music scene gets referenced atThe Wuxtry spotlighting R.E.M., Widespread Panic andthe B52s. And the drawls and accents were deemed au-thentic from my perspective and lifetime in the South!

Vance smiled at my sentimentality during the premierwe attended as I got teary eyed with pride when my fa-vorite character Sarah (played by Sarah Rue) pushes herlove interest outside of the Arches and teases him that hecan’t walk under them because he didn’t graduate fromUGA.

After the film, Epting was able to Skype in director andco-writer Jeff Stephenson on the Cine big screen and wetalked about the making of the film. This was such a greattreat. Stephenson was complimentary of Athens and howshe embraced everyone working on the film. With Ept-ing’s help and example, Stephenson was able to get past thehokey clichéd Hollywood portrayal of the South and itspeople. A must see film!

It was on a Wednesday that I got the call everyGeorgian aches for around this time of year.

“Ryan, what are you doing Sunday?” the voice onthe other end of the line asked. Before I could stam-mer out a response came the following, “How wouldyou like to head over to Augusta for the Masters?”

Pandemonium reigned within my brain. A life-long dream come true, I would be among the “pa-trons” to see a Sunday green jacket awarded inAugusta.

Being the eternal optimist, even as a 22-year oldcollege senior whose lifetime low golf round was a76, when walking around Augusta National I couldnot help but daydream about what it would take toearn that other type of invitation to the Masters. Youknow, the one where they let you play in the tourna-ment and hold those ridiculous news conferences andstuff. It didn’t take long for me to grasp the gravity ofthe process that it takes to reach the pinnacle of asport.

Only then did I realize what makes Athens suchan incredible sports town.

The path to greatness is all about process. BeforeGordon Beckham was winning rookie of the yearawards for the Chicago White Sox, he was cutting histeeth at shortstop under the lights at Foley Field. Be-fore John Isner could claim being the number twoAmerican tennis player, he was avoiding double faultsin front of mere dozens of spectators at the Dan Mag-ill Tennis Complex. And before Torrin Lawrence wassetting world records in track, he was…well, nevermind Torrin Lawrence.

My point is that in Athens, we sports fans havethe unique privilege to see world class athletic talentundergo the process it takes to produce world classcompetitors. Whether it be in tennis, track, swim-ming and diving, baseball, basketball, softball, soc-cer, or equestrian, there is no reason not to don yourred and black and get out to support these athleteswho are following their dreams.

And, if you want a textbook example of athletesgrinding towards their dreams, be sure to cheer onformer Georgia golfers Paul Claxton and Chris Kirk atthe Nationwide Tour’s Stadion Athens Classic at UGA.The tournament starts April 29 and is held at theUGA Golf Course.

Maybe you read legendary Georgia sideline re-porter Loran Smith’s recent column on the impor-tance of process. It detailed the old practice habits ofa tour pro who would come to the UGA Golf Courseevery year to prepare for the Masters. Away from theglory of the PGA Tour, the humble pro would givethe UGA Golf team pointers on their short gamewhile trying to overcome the mental block of winningevery kind of tournament except for a major.

On Sunday afternoon at Augusta National, theUniversity course-tested pro walked up the 18th fair-way with multiple putts to win his third green jacketand fourth major. In front of a television audience ofmillions, Phil Mickelson demonstrated the fruits of aprocess-focused course of training. Here in Athens wehave the opportunity to see the process unfold daily.

One and done is demeaning to college hoopsGeorgia got great news when its

two sophomore hardwood stars Howard“Trey” Thompkins and Travis Leslie an-nounced that they would forego the Na-tional Basketball Association Draft andreturn to school for their junior seasons.

This speaks to an extremely badproblem with the sport and the unques-tioned deterioration of the collegiategame.

Think back to the 1980s, it was thegolden era of both the NBA and the col-legiate game. In the pro’s, there was theLakers, Celtics and Sixers. Magic, Bird,Kareem, Dr. J and the emergence ofMichael Jordan. College basketball fea-tured epic national championshipgames. There was Jordan’s game winnerin North Carolina’s 63-62 victory overGeorgetown in 1982. The next year wasLorenzo Charles dunk and N.C. State’supset of Houston. Patrick Ewing andthe Hoyas beat Hakeem Olajuwon andHouston in ’84. Then came Villanova’supset of Georgetown. Next was a three-point Louisville victory over Duke. In’87, it was Keith Smart and Indianabeating Syracuse. The next year wasDanny (Manning) and the Miracles clip-ping mighty Oklahoma. The decadewrapped with Michigan topping SetonHall by a point in overtime.

Not many games the last 15 yearsthat rival, these, huh.

Granted, this past tournament wasfilled with the usual splendor, thrills andbuzzer beaters – and a championshipgame that played its way into the mem-orable category.

From 1979 through 1984, MagicJohnson, Darrell “Dr. Dunkenstein”Griffith, Isiah Thomas, James Worthy,Hakeem Olajuwon and Patrick Ewingwere the MVP’s of the Final Four. That’sfive NBA Hall of Famer’s who made theincredibly elite “top 50 players of alltime list,” plus another standout.

The Final Four MVPs since 2004have been Emeka Okafor, Sean May,Joakim Noah, Corey Brewer, MarioChalmers, Wayne Ellington and KyleSingler. There are some good playersthere, no doubt, but not any potentialHall of Famers I think it could beagreed.

College basketball and the NBAneed desperately to get on the samepage. Football is golden, with the real-ization that if one is strong, and it makesthe other even better. High schools playon Friday and those players feed to thecolleges who play on Saturday. Then thecollege players go to the National Foot-ball League, which plays on Sundays.

The easiest solution would be for

the NBA to go to either the NFL Draftrule, where a player can’t be picked untilhe’s three years out of high school, orthe baseball system. If a drafted playerdoesn’t sign with a professional clubcoming out of high school, he can’t getre-drafted until after his third year. Thissystem would be a better fit for baseball. The next LeBron James and Kobe Bryantcould go straight out of high school. But coaches like Mark Fox wouldn’thave to worry about players like Leslieand Thompkins until after their junioryears.

It was certainly great for Georgiabaseball knowing the Jeff Keppinger,Gordon Beckham, Josh Fields, RichPoythress and Will Startup would be inAthens for at least three years.

The “one and done” policy, utilizedby Greg Oden, Kevin Durant, DerrickRose and John Wall – amongst others –is downright demeaning to college ath-letics.

And the mindset it creates is evenworse. When players have two goodgames now, many, instead of thinkingthey could be taking steps to becominga consistently good player in the South-eastern or Atlantic Coast Conferences, often now think they’re ready for theNBA.

What a nightmare for coaches. As great as the tournament is, the

television ratings have been sagging.Fans just aren’t familiar with the play-ers. It shouldn’t come as a shock thatschools like Butler and George Masonhave made recent Final Four runs andthat the number of mid-major schoolstopping Bowl Championship Seriespower conference teams increases yearly. The mid-majors have teams that haveplayed together and are planning onplaying together for extended years. Atsome point, “big schools” may changehow they recruit, tired of gettingbounced early. Was O.J. Mayo worth itfor Southern Cal? And as great as KevinDurant was at Texas, the Longhorns lostin the first round. Duke, likely partiallyby accident, fell into this situation. Thepowerhouse Blue Devils didn’t boast anuber-talented roster of players eyeingearly career jumps to the NBA.

Look what they fell into. So for Georgia, no question, it’s

great news that Leslie and Thompkinsare back. But it’s a scenario that Fox, orany other college basketball coach, shouldn’t have to worry about. Thegame and sport will be better if the NBAand college hoops can ever share a mu-tually beneficial co-existence the wayKing Football does.

If you have been over to the UGA Golf Course recently, youmay have noticed some changes. The azaleas and dogwoods areout in all of their spring glory, and the course is looking greenwith anticipation for the upcoming Stadion Athens Classic atUGA, Northeast Georgia’s own Nationwide Tour event heldThursday April 29-Sunday, May 2nd at the University of Geor-gia Golf Course.

Construction crews have been cruising up and downRiverbend Road since January. Some new features to the courseinclude an impressive new stone entryway and the signatureGeorgia “G” logo stenciled into the 1st, 10th, and 12th holes inred and black, 50 yard-line style. Even among all the aestheticimprovements to the course, nothing indicates the coming spot-light to the UGA Course clearer than the sets of bleachers thathave sprung up around the 13th and 18th green. Even the UGAGolf course’s clientele has been changing lately, with NationwideTour Pros shuffling around the E.B. Smith Clubhouse betweenpractice rounds. Just last week talk of “this new yellow fertilizer

stuff” dominated a pollen-covered parking lot. If knowledge oflocal allergens is any indication, the Stadion Athens Classic atUGA is set to host a field of competitors that will be a changefrom the type of guys who make up the normal Sunday four-some.

Of course, in the Nationwide Tour change is nothing new.Being the premier feeder to the PGA Tour, the Nationwide Tour’sstars annually make the jump to the worldwide stage, leaving thefield wide open for a new set of stars to emerge each season. Aseach November approaches, competition heats up to be one ofthe 25 leading money winners at season’s end. “The 25”, as themoney leaders come to be known, earn a PGA Tour card for thefollowing year.

Some key numbers that Nationwide Tour tournament spec-tators should have in mind include:

- 1,179: The number of players on the Nationwide Tour’sall-time roster

- 333: The number of Nationwide Tour alumni who haveearned PGA Tour cards via the Nationwide Tour Money List

- 268: The number of PGA Tour tounraments won by Na-tionwide Tour alumni

- 70.7%: Percentage of PGA Tour members who are Na-tionwide Tour alumni

- 238,000: Approximate number of volunteers who havecontributed time to Nationwide Tour events

- While those are some impressive figures, none come closeto comparing to the $60,000,000 that has been donated to char-ity by the Nationwide Tour since 1990, which has benefittedover 2,500 organizations. The Stadion Athens Classic at UGA isupholding the Nationwide Tour’s tradition of giving back to thecommunity, and has already raised over $50,775 for Athens areacharities. Tickets are still available for the Stadion Athens Clas-sic at UGA, and can be purchased at the gate or discounted on-line at www.stadionathensclassic.uga.edu

After a tough loss to the 4th-ranked Florida Gators, the Georgiawomen’s tennis team has an opportunity for redemption at the upcomingSEC Championships. The 14th-ranked Lady Dawgs fell 6-1 to Florida in amatch that clinched the regular season conference title for the Gators.

"It was a hard match and a tough loss. It’s obviously not what wewanted to happen. To their credit, Florida played really well all after-noon," said head coach Jeff Wallace. "With that said, I think we did havesome opportunities. We started too slow in doubles and that hurt us youcant spot a team like Florida 3 or 4 games to start thing off. In singles, Ithink we had some chances too, but just couldn’t get going soon enough. We have a lot to work on, but we’re going to get better heading into theend of our season."

And the end of the season is drawing near. Because the Lady Dawgsare hosting both the SEC Women’s Tennis Championship and the NCAATennis Championships, the Lady Dawgs are assured of a home court ad-vantage for the rest of the season. The women’s tennis team has wonthree consecutive SEC Tournament Titles, and a 2010 tournament titlecould take the sting out of giving Florida the regular season crown.

Georgia is led by coach Jeff Wallace who is in his 25th season andhas collected 538 wins in his tenure with the Bulldogs. He is assisted byFrank Polito, who is in his fourth season. The SEC Women’s Tennis Cham-pionships will be held in Athens at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex fromApril 22-25. The NCAA Tennis Championships for both men and womenwill also be held there May 14-31.

30th Athens Twilight is April 23 and 24Spring is here, and in Athens, that

means more than just track meets and base-ball games. This April marks the 30th Twi-light Criterium event held in Athens. Beforeyou get all flustered thinking of EdwardCullen or break out your vampire cape, thisTwilight is the annual bike race throughdowntown Athens. Over the years, Twilighthas evolved from a bike race around Athensinto a weekend long event that incorporatesour music scene and the locals into the longlist of scheduled events. The University ofGeorgia School of Music is hosting a Jazz Fes-tival for the second year in a row. The busystreets of downtown are blocked off and thecity transforms into a street fair with every-thing from live music, street vendors and out-side activities make the already awesomedowntown scene even more exciting.

Although the main event is a profes-sional cycling race, with qualifying roundsand intense riders, there will be plenty ofevents for the less experienced and non-bik-ers. There is a 5K walk/run that is open toanyone who wants to join in the Twilight ex-perience. The race starts and finishes down-town on Saturday morning. For those whohave more than a leisurely stroll in mind, thisrace can also qualify you for the mile race Sat-urday night. The top fifteen men and top fif-teen women qualify for the chance to win$1,000 for the fastest mile time. As enticingas an extra $1,000 in my pocket sounds, Ithink I’ll stick to listening to music and eatinga funnel cake on College Street.

There is even more fun to be had by theyounger members of our Bulldawg family.Throughout the weekend, there will be facepainting, music, games and even racing forkids. For children ages 5-14, there will bebike races in heats, starting at 11:30 am. Forthose under five that still want to show offtheir talents, they can bring their big wheelsor trikes and have their own race outside City

Hall at noon. In true competitive fashion, each child will receive a metal, along with a t-shirt and a prize package.

Ever had a secret desire to become aBMX rider? Me too. This year Twilight willalso include both amateur and professionalBMX stunt competition. There will be a com-plete bike course of jump boxes, quarters, spines, wall rides, quarter pipes and more! This street competition has been described as“breakdancing on bikes.” I can not imaginewhat that entails, but I know it will be excit-ing!

Twilight is an event that is alwaysmarked on the calendars of students and lo-cals in the area. It is the last weekend beforethe reality of finals sets in. With venuesdowntown open a few extra hours, and allthe events going on during the day and night, this weekend affair is sure to provide a muchneeded distraction from the stress of our ac-ademic lives. Overall, the three-day event en-compasses intense competition, music, greatfood, and an organized schedule of activatesfor every age.

GeorgeTTEs A UGA tradition since 1959

compiled by Cheri Leavy, photo by Blane Marable

The University of Georgia established the first dance teamin the Southeastern Conference in 1959, with the founding ofthe Georgette dance line. Currently, the Georgettes consist of 12girls who are proud to represent The University of Georgia asmembers of The Redcoat Band Auxiliary Program. They per-form with the band during pregame and half time at all homeand most away football games, including Florida and a bowlgame. They can also be seen at pep rallies, parades and vari-ous other appearances throughout the Athens community. Jointhe Georgettes for Spirit Night at Loco’s on Harris St. on Thurs-day, April 22 at 5:30 p.m.

Traci Raines (center front row) and Carson Michalski (center middle row(

1. How long have you been dancing?

Traci- I have been dancing since I was 3 years old. How-ever, I did not dance in high school because I played basketballand did football cheerleading.

Carson- I have been dancing since 3. I danced competi-tively for 13 years and was a member of my high school danceteam.

2. How would you describe this style of dance?

Traci-Georgettes typically do a technical jazz style of dance, however, we often incorporate other styles throughout the sea-son as well.

Carson- The UGA Georgettes perform at during halftimeat the football games and typically perform a jazz routine, pomroutine, and a kick line.

3. How often do you practice?

Traci- During the fall, Georgettes practice from 5:00-7:30

every Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday. We also havepractice on Saturday mornings before home games! Friday andSaturday practices are held at Woodruff Field and are open to thepublic. Come out and watch the Redcoats and Georgettes dur-ing these practices! We love having an audience!

4. Is dancing something you want to continue in the fu-ture?

Traci- I would love to teach dance to 3, 4, and 5 yearolds in the future, and I would also like to coach a highschool dance team at some point while I pursue my career inEarly Childhood Education.

Carson- I am going to school to become an Occupa-tional Therapist; however, I would love to continue dancingthrough teaching children or using dance as a therapy tech-nique with special needs children.

5. Where does the inspiration for the routines comefrom?

Traci- Our choreography comes from everywhere! Weoften get ideas from dance competitions, youtube, cheercompetitions, and other collegiate dance lines.

Carson- Most of the girls on the line have been danc-ing their entire lives and have grown up constantly makingup routines in their head. Basically, it just comes pretty nat-urally!

6. How would you describe the atmosphere and thefeelings you experience during a game?

Traci- Dancing in front of over 92,000 people is an ex-perience that can not adequately be described in words. There is a rush of energy from the fans, the football team, and the other Redcoats that is truly exhilarating. There is

nothing like a Saturday in Athens!

Carson- Experiencing the game as a Georgette is unlikeanything else! Being able to form the tunnel for the footballplayers as they march on the field, standing on the sidelinelistening to Battle Hymn, and being able to be part of some-thing so much bigger than just our dance line is an experi-ence unlike any.

7. What is your favorite part about being a Georgette?

Traci- My favorite thing about being a Georgette are thefriendships that you make. This is a unique experience thatyou share with a handful of girls, and many of my closestfriends have been or are Georgettes.

Carson- My absolute favorite part about being a Geor-gette is the friendship. Yes, I love to dance and can't imag-ine not having dance in my life; however, the friendships Ihave made will last a life time.

8. What has being on Georgettes and being a part ofthe Redcoat Band taught you?

Traci- Being a part of the Redcoat Band and Georgetteshas taught me a lot about the importance of tradition andhard work. Traditions are created through hard work, ded-ication, love, and perseverance, and learning that has had anincredible impact on my life. "Once a Dawg, always aDawg...How sweet it is!"

Carson- Not only being on Georgettes, but being a partof the Redcoat Band has taught me how to work as a teamcreating music and entertainment for so many that are soproud to be Georgia Bulldogs! These experiences have mademe who I am today and I am so grateful for every memberof the Redcoat Band that I have had the pleasure of meetingand hope to meet by the end of this year!
