The table on the left gives you the standings in start order which sorts the rating groups together albeit not in order within the group. Top result for a relaxed Eugene after a layoff. With good runner up results for Leon and Ari. Group 2 turned out a gimme for Gus 6.5 out of 7 Run-ners up Kevin Brown and Max Chew Lee were 3 points[!] behind him. Group3 was much more evenly con-tested with David Cannon and Sam Gluzman sneaking ahead by 1/2 point from the rest of the group. In group 4 a win for the much improved Tristan although his task was made easier by the last round non appearance of Jack Hughes who despite this handi-cap still came sec-ond with surprise packet Adrian
The 2 lower rating groups are always of special interest to me as they mainly contain the new starters and the novices. And so it was again this year. Only Tanya had strayed down to the lower group due to being grossly underrated.
The winners and runners up in group 5 and 6 were typical of what I meant
In group 5 there was Kris Chan on 5.5 with Carl Loucas on 5 and brother Luis not far behind. In group 6 there was Bobby Yu, first Friday night tournament and a winner. Bobby snuck in 1/2 point ahead of the more experienced Oswald Li and Dominic Lai and was pretty pleased with his result and why wouldn't he Overall interesting tournament plenty of computer selection oddities

The competition was a shambles. I don’t think I have ever seen so many for-feits in one competition. In division one alone there were 2 whole team for-feits including I am sad to say our Box Hill no1 team. If the competition director had applied the forfeit rules half the players would
have been barred. The thing that was intriguing was that several teams claimed forfeits without either the forfeit receiver or the giver getting a men-tion. Surely that cannot be right. Chess Victoria with a newly elected commit-tee should have a serious look at both the format and the rules. Well perhaps
the rules were OK if they had been applied.

Some news from the committee
The committee at its meeting on Monday night
agreed with the proposal to build a stand alone
web site for the Canterbury Junior Chess Club.
The site will be template based and content man-
aged by a professional web designer. It is ex-
pected that the site will be operational prior to or
directly after Christmas.
With the exiting Chess Victoria meeting coming up
the committee is still looking for club delegates to
attend the CV AGM on Sunday December 4. We
are entitled to a total of 10 delegates. 6 for Can-
terbury Juniors and 4 for
BHCC. The club’s 2CV life
members [who have a
separate vote] are also
planning to attend
Box Hill Chess Club winning bids [some comments]
New Web master for BHCC web site Committee member Roger Croft has put up his hand for the job of looking after our web site
www.boxhillchess.org.au
In the last issue I briefly mentioned that when
submitting our bids President Peter Tsai and his
sidekick yours truly were quietly confident that
our submissions for the Vic Open and the Vic Jun-
ior would be highly competitive. And here are
some of the reasons for our confidence
Location, location, location. The Box Hill
venue is almost the exact geographic centre
of Melbourne it has ample parking, is very
close to Canterbury railway station and bus-
ses pass the front door
There is space for up to 120 players
5 working DGT boards. Almost unheard of in
this country
Good prize money due to the support we
have from the Bendigo Bank.
We saw the return of Jason
Tang to the coaching
group as a substitute for
the absent Rukman
Moderate entry fees.
A low key approach. This may sound a little
old fashioned but we believe that if you
looking for support for your submissions it
is not a good idea to antagonise those you
wish to impress.
Willingness to use the ACF approved swiss
draw system and the ACF rating system.
Tournament organisation skills. Our tourna-
ments generally run smoothly and the few
disputes we have, are quickly resolved
FIDE arbiters at the club. 3 of our members
have passed the FIDE arbiters exam. One of
whom is now titled
Last Sunday was my last duty turn for the year. It has been a fascinating
experience. Both Jason Tang and Rengan Vijayakumar returned to the
coaching group after a long absence It was good to meet again. I have a
reasonably up to date photo of Jason but Rengan is now a lot taller than
when I saw him last.
Round 6 of the Sunday coaching group tournament follows here
1 William Wang [3] .5:.5 Riana Mikael [3]
2 William Li [3] 1:0 Andrew E Lau [3]
3 Kelvin Wang [2.5] 0:1 Damian Picone [2.5]
