Nasha Mukti Abhiyan EVENT DATE : 19th August 2019 EVENT VENUE: Terapanth bhavan, Surat. FACULTY COORDINATOR: Prof. Ghanshyam Sanghani Conflict is called another name of human life. With this struggle, a person becomes pure and pure like Kundan, people whose heart is weak or whose determination is not strong, they kneel before the struggle. They resort to drug addiction to avoid their success. What is there to say that they say that we drink to forget the sorrow? This brings peace to our mind. By getting intoxicated, one gets relief from sorrows and sorrows, but does a person really get free from sorrows? If that were the case then no one in the whole world would be sad and worried. With that respect, our college, Bhagwan Mahavir College of Pharmacy, Surat organized “Nasha Mukti Abhiyan” on 19th Aug, 2019 at Terapanth Bhavan, Citylight Road, Surat. Shri. Mahapragya Swamiji from Terapanth Sampradaya was invited as chief guest. More than 5000 staff members and the students from various colleges of BMEF participated in the program. Faculty Corner RESEARCH ARTICLE ON : “COMPARATIVE EFFECT OF THE ACETONE AND CHLOROFORM FRACTIONS OF METHANOLIC EXTRACT OF LAGENARIA SICERARIA (MOLINA) STANDLEY FRUITS ON MARBLE-BURYING BEHAVIOR IN MICE: IMPLICATIONS FOR OBSESSIVE-COMPULSIVE DISORDER”

By: Asst. Prof. Rakesh Prajapati Obsessive–compulsive disorder (OCD) is the fourth most common mental disorder and is diagnosed nearly as often as asthma and diabetes mellitus. Over the last decade, the inhibition of burying of glass marbles by mice has been used as an index of anti-OCD drug action in the so- called marble-burying test. Lagenaria siceraria (Molina) Standley (LS), commonly known as “bottle gourd” (English), possesses several medicinal properties; little is known about its action as a nerve tonic. The purpose of this study was to characterize the anti-OCD (anti-compulsive) activity of the methanolic extact of LS fruits (MLSF) and its bioactive fractions, chloroform (CFMLS) and acetone (AFMLS) fractions of MLSF using the marble-burying behavior in mice. The experiment was conducted in specific animal models of Swiss albino mice to evaluate marble-burying behavior. Oral administration of 100, 200 and 400 mg/kg of MLSF, CFMLS and AFMLS decreased the total number of buried marbles. The AFMLS exhibited more significant effect than CFMLS. The effect was comparable to that of the fluoxetine (10 mg/kg, i.p.). Fluoxetine and LS fractions do not produce any overt motor dysfunction. Preliminary phytochemical screening of CFMLS showed the presence of saponins, phytosterols, terpenoids and fats, while phytochemical screening of AFMLS showed the presence of saponins, phenolic compounds, flavonoids and tannins. The results of the study for the first time show that the plant possesses anti-compulsive (anti-OCD) activity, confirming the traditional claims. Future research should focus on the identification and the mechanism of action of the constituents from this plant.

The Bowl of Hygeia By: Mahua Das

The Bowl of Hygeia originated from Greek mythology and is universally depicted as a snake wrapped in one manner or another around a bowl. Aesculapius (pronounced Es-Kah-Lay-Pi-Ous and sometimes spelled Asklepios) was the Greek god of medicine and healing. He was the son of Apollo, who was the son of Zeus. Zeus became afraid that Aesculapius would render all men immortal because of his healing power, so he killed him with a thunderbolt. Temples were built for Aesculapius, and harmless serpents were found inside. These serpents appeared dead because they were stiff. However, when picked up and dropped, they slithered away. The people at that time thought the serpents were brought back to life by the healing powers of Aesculapius, which ultimately caused them to become the symbol of healing. Hygeia, the daughter of Aesculapius and the goddess of health, is usually depicted with a serpent around her arm and a bowl in her hand because she tended to the temples containing these snakes.

We have since separated the serpent and the bowl from Hygeia herself, and this has become the internationally recognized symbol of pharmacy. Now the bowl represents a medicinal potion, and the snake represents healing. Healing through medicine is precisely why pharmacy has adopted the Bowl of Hygeia symbol. The American Pharmaceutical Association adopted the Bowl of Hygeia as its symbol to represent the pharmacy profession in 1964.
