Park Hotel Alexandra enjoys a privileged position overlooking the lush verdant green belt of the Southern Ridges on one front and the heritage enclave of Queenstown on the other.

Back in the early 1900s, the Alexandra area was predominantly made up of fruit and vegetable plantations. Alexandra Road, for instance, had Chinese dialect aliases such as Chui-bo lai (within the water rice-mill) and Lau-chi kha ( ‘foot of the betel nut’). It then became the headquarters of the British colonial forces during the 1930s and 40s, where buildings and accommodation were constructed to serve the air and sea forces. Progressively, the area has blossomed to incorporate the finer details of urban living while preserving its historical and natural heritage.

Get up close and personal with nature. Set against the backdrop of majestic heritage trees, a seamless expanse of green space brimming with biodiversity sits right in your backyard, waiting for you to explore. The symphony of rustling leaves and singing birds gradually takes over the hustle and bustle noises of the city as you embark on a leisurely trek along the Southern Ridges, a 10-km trail with elevated walkways that connects the lush hilly parks of Mount Faber, Telok Blangah Hill and Kent Ridge, as well as Labrador Nature Reserve.

For a shorter trail, head down along Alexandra Road to Alexandra Arch, a bridge designed to look like an open fig leaf, which connects to HortPark, a gardening lifestyle hub featuring interesting landscape designs that will appeal to even the curious passerby. A side visit to Reflections at Bukit Chandu is worth the while for those interested in Singapore’s World War II history.

If heritage is your cup of tea, here’s an alternate journey. Head northwards for an immersive heritage experience in Queenstown, the first satellite town in Singapore and named in commemoration of Queen Elizabeth II’s coronation in 1953. Each iconic landmark has its own little story to tell – from Alexandra Hospital and its secret tunnels dating back to World War II, to the picturesque KTM Railway tracks that once led all the way to Malaysia. Every last Saturday of the month, the free, guided walking tour My Queenstown Heritage Trail covers all of these and more.

To satiate your afternoon hunger, Wessex Village Square, tucked away in a rustic part along Portsdown Road, offers some interesting options. Choose from a small clove of restaurants such as Ristorante Pietrasanta, serving Tuscan-inspired Italian cuisine, and Café Colbar, which served as a canteen for the British army when it first opened in 1948 and until today still retains much of its old world charm.

For those craving a variety of local flavours, why not try hawker centre hopping for some of the best tastes in town? Many travel to Alexandra Village Food Centre within the vicinity just for avocado juice by Mr Avocado and for braised duck rice by New Market Teochew. At ABC Brickworks Market & Food Centre, the humble, flavourful noodle dish from Yi Sheng Hokkien Mee is worth queuing for. Lastly, don’t forget Redhill Food Centre’s Hua Kee chicken rice and the delightfully crispy and juicy chicken wings from Yan Fried Bee Hoon – where Singapore’s Prime Minister was sighted personally queuing for them for a good half an hour !

For those hoping to get some shopping done at a bargain, Queensway Shopping Centre with its vast range of sporting goods at affordable prices can appease any sports enthusiast.

A short drive to the HarbourFront precinct brings you to a thriving waterfront shopping and leisure destination and the gateway to Sentosa Island. Take the cable car service from Faber Peak, an iconic hilltop destination, or Harbourfront Tower II, which connects to Sentosa and be rewarded with an impressive aerial overview of the island and harbour. VivoCity, Singapore’s largest shopping mall with a string of international and local brands and restaurants, will satisfy any shopaholic, while Singapore Cruise Centre at HarbourFront Centre promises another adventure with ferry services to neighbouring islands and other international destinations.

Wind down your day at Gillman Barracks, a historic military site that has been turned into a contemporary arts cluster, home to more than a dozen international galleries and a handful of restaurants. The Naked Finn’s succulent lobster roll is best savoured in its alfresco setting, while Timbre@Gillman offers tapas and cocktails alongside live music from local bands. Alternatively, relax by the water’s edge at Marina at Keppel Bay. Indulge in a drink or two at The Wine Glass or Privé Waterfront Bar while admiring the night view of the bay dotted by luxury yachts.

Before You GoPark Hotel Alexandra is located at 323 Alexandra Road, Singapore 159972
