The view from the Muellers’ apartment is something to behold. Where most of us have gardens, cityscapes or desert vistas, this couple has the world’s tallest building, the world’s biggest mall, and the world’s most spectacular water feature – all visible from the comfort of the couch. “It was the view that swung it for us,” says Matt. “We moved in 18 months ago. We’ve lived in The Residences at Burj Khalifa ever since we arrived in Dubai five years ago, and that view never gets old.”
It hasn’t always been so picturesque, though: “When we moved in it was just a construction pit,” says Katie. “It was all a promise. The fountain was empty, the mall wasn’t open, and the Burj was only half built. We thought that when it was finished the area would be pretty incredible, but at first it was all about convenience for me: there was a Starbucks, a nail salon, a grocery store and a
pharmacy all within walking distance. We’d just moved from Washington DC, from an area where you could walk wherever you want, so it was important for us to find that here.”
“We’ve looked at the Palm, the Marina,” continues Matt, “but here when you go for a walk at night you’re walking around the fountain – it ’s tough to beat. And it ’s quiet, too: we’re in the middle of the action but we don’t hear a lot. We hear the water cannons going off on the fountains sometimes, but that cuts out at 11pm. We don’t have the noise of the traffic or building work either, which you get in so many other places.”
There’s a real community feel here too. The Muellers know many of their neighbours – no mean feat in a high-rise tower. “It ’s a sociable place to live – the homeowners association does a lot of work to ensure there’s a nice environment,” says Katie. “There are lots of
young couples in the area, and a few families too. It ’s a very mixed bag, but culturally quite western. We have block parties with bouncy castles, food, entertainment, bingo, face painting... Things like that always create a lovely atmosphere.”
“The leisure facilities are great,” continues Matt. “There are pools, gyms, squash courts, badminton courts, movie theatres, libraries, four business centres and a huge party area. Lots of concerts are held in the Burj Park, too, just underneath our balcony. A few weeks ago one of our favourite bands played, so we threw a big party – we had the best seats in the house.”
With The Dubai Mall and Souk al Bahar on their doorstep, the Muellers can be discerning when it comes to dinnertime. “We love Calabar at The Address Dubai Mall,” says Matt, “and Neos, the restaurant on the 63rd

floor. You can see how tall the Burj really is from there: you’re high up, so everything else is really small, but you’re looking at the shin of the Burj… It ’s incredible. We’ve been known to hang out at the Armani Hotel Dubai, too – well, on special occasions. And we have some friends who live in the Burj Khalifa, so we sometimes meet them in the residents-only coffee bar on the 123rd floor. It ’s just above At.Mosphere, so it ’s not a bad place to go for a drink at all...”
“There is so much new stuff here,” adds Katie. “New restaurants, shops, apartments… I worry that when we move away nowhere will measure up! Everything’s so easy, and if you don’t want to walk to a restaurant for dinner practically everywhere delivers. I’ve never been able to walk to a mall in my life, but now I can walk to the world’s largest mall. When it comes to choice and convenience, this place is amazing.”
Downtown has plenty of options for leisure and fitness too: “In the summer, the building’s gyms and pools are great, but in the winter everyone heads outside,” Katie says. “We run around the fountains – it ’s a pretty amazing track to take! The area is beautiful, and is taken care of really well; they do all of the landscaping very carefully, and everything has a beautiful finish.”
“Part of the reason we love high-rise living is because we want to be in the middle of it all,” continues Matt. “Families with young children or people who prefer a quieter life might not like it so much, but for us it ’s perfect. For the money we pay, we could move elsewhere and have lots of space, a really spectacular villa, but we don’t want that life yet. These properties rent or sell themselves – it ’s a very sought-after area. We still feel like it ’s one of the city’s best-kept secrets, though: lots of people come to visit
Downtown, but they flock to the Marina to live. Yes, the prices there are competitive, but this part of the city feels like a retreat to us. The tourists leave here, but The Walk is always crowded.”
It ’s clear that the couple feel at home in this iconic district: their interior décor is warm and homely, with sentimental touches throughout. “I wanted to create a really welcoming atmosphere, with reds and golds,” says Katie. “Most of the artwork and décor has come from our travels – and everything has personal meaning too. We’re always on the look-out for something really cool, really unique – something that tells a part of our story together.”
“We are both very creative people,” she continues, “and we’ve loved making our mark on the apartment. We feel very settled; this is an exciting, vibrant place to live – but we’ve made it our home too.”

There are lots of options for renting and buying in the area, but you’ll have to be quick: demand is high, and most places are snapped up within a few weeks of being on the market. This is prime real estate, so property comes at a premium, but with that you’ll be within easy reach of fantastic amenities and enjoy top-notch fittings and furnishings. Downtown encompasses The Residences at Burj Khalifa of course, but you’ll find plenty of other options if you’d prefer to look on to the world’s tallest building, rather than out from it. High rise options include Burj Views, South Ridge and The Residences. Low-rise developments include Old Town and Old Town Island.
From the world’s favourite department stores (think Bloomingdale’s, Galeries Lafayette and Debenhams) to the finest jewels in Arabia (Chopard, Cartier, Breguet), The Dubai Mall has it all. Its seemingly endless array of food courts will keep you energised all day, and you’ll find plenty of dining options away from the shopping masses too. Souk al Bahar has almost every type of cuisine you could wish for, from American comfort food (Dean & Deluca Café) to Zambian-style grills (Kozi Africafé). The plethora of hotels provides great grub too: try eateries at the likes of Qamardeen Hotel, The Address Dubai Mall, Armani Hotel Dubai and Al Manzil Hotel.
How does a 22-screen cinema sound? Or a ten-million-litre aquarium? How about the largest shopping mall in the world? Whatever your age or interests, there’ll be something to keep you occupied here. On weekends, start the day with a jog around the fountains and breakfast at Souk al Bahar, then head for a morning of retail therapy at The Dubai Mall. After lunch, kick back in the vast Picturehouse cinema, don your blades for a spin on the ice rink, or gawp at the aquarium’s fishy residents, then make your way to one of the fountain-side eateries for an epic water show. Throughout winter, the outdoor entertainment spaces of Burj Park host big-name acts, exhibitions and festivals – check local listings for details.
Education options within walking distance of Downtown are few and far between, but easy access to Emirates Road and Sheikh Zayed Road keeps school-run times manageable. There are a couple of pre-school options nearby: try Old Town Nursery (part of Raffles International School), located near Dubai Mall and the Burj Khalifa, or Kangaroo Kids, in the heart of Burj Residences. Primary and secondary schooling requires more of a commute, but the choice in Jumeirah and Al Quoz is plentiful. Emirates International School (eischools.ae), Jumeirah English Speaking School ( jess.sch.ae), and GEMS Jumeirah Primary School ( jumeirahprimaryschool.com) are all well-established options with good reputations.

Dubai is expected to double its population of 2.05 million to 4 million by 2020. This was revealed
by the BOFA Merryl Lynch report on GCC released in July this year. We expect 950,000 jobs to be created in next eight years. The bulk of this job creation will come from expansion in tourism and trade with aviation and related sectors contributing 300,000 more jobs. The demand emanating from the resultant population rise will require an additional 317,000 housing units. This means the city needs to increase its housing stock by 94% of the existing stock.
The source of the city’s growth is the expected growth in the larger GCC economy. Revenue generation from GCC oil production will be in the region of $18 trillion over the next 25 years. This is 2.5 times larger than the revenue generation of the previous 25 years. Unlike before, when most of this revenue was parked in international banking and financial institutions, there is enough scope of investing the bulk of this revenue within the GCC. This windfall will spur growth in infrastructure, education, manufacturing and services industries.
The combined GDP of the GCC block now stands at $1.4 trillion. Literacy rate has grown from 20% in 1970 to 70% by 2010, while life expectancy has increased from 65 to 75. While family size is steadily reducing, the population growth is expected to reach its peak in 2050. This means that the region is also expected to benefit from a massive demographic windfall. Economic and population growth will require investments in different sectors which will absorb the huge revenue generation from oil and gas production. Dubai, being the trading hub of the region, is very well positioned to benefit from the ensuing growth.
The real-estate industry will see immediate as well as medium-term benefits. The pre-2008 real-estate supply, which was surpassing demand in recent years, has started dwindling and will stabilise to a rate of 4.9% per year. But the population is expected to start rising by 6.1% from 2013. This will put pressure on housing and create scenarios of higher than expected property appreciation. Answer:In the first instance, I do not know a great deal about German divorce law but it would not be difficult for me to establish the fundamental principles of whether you are entitled to have a divorce whilst resident out of Germany. There are several countries in Europe that do not permit a divorce unless one or both of you are actually resident in your home country. However, with your wife being a British subject she is essentially still domiciled in the UK which means that her permanent place of residence and citizenship remains there rather than in the UAE where she is just habitually resident. Your wife obviously needs to be concerned with regard to her position of cohabitation because it is illegal here in the UAE.Notwithstanding the above, even under Shari’a law, should you choose to take a divorce process in the Court here, your wife would be entitled to custody of the children if the girls are under 13 and the boys are under 11 years of age. As far as the residence issue is concerned, if your wife is working, clearly she would be entitled to be sponsored for residence purposes by her employers and she would need to make investigations with them in that regard. Alternatively, she ought to consider formalising her position with her boyfriend because of the illegality of it here, and there is no reason why you cannot continue to sponsor her until a final decree of divorce. Thereafter, her visa could be cancelled although it is possible that it could continue to run until its renewal date. If cancelled by you, as a British subject she would be entitled to have a short period on visit visa and I would imagine she would then need to consider remarriage. The fact that she is cohabiting with another man does put the children at risk to some extent here and I think to that extent, you would be justified in requesting that she legalise her position vis-à-vis her boyfriend.

I love hanging out in my baby’s nursery. Gather up your friends and family for an Italian feast with these recipes from BiCE’s head chef
Born in the South of Italy, Cosimo Danese decided as a child that he wanted to be a chef. He moved to England, trained under the watchful gaze of Angela Hartnett, and entered the world of fine dining. He never lost sight of his roots, though, and moved to the UAE in 2008 as sous chef for Hilton Dubai Jumeirah’s Italian restaurant BiCE. It was a baptism of fire – Cosimo describes Dubai’s dining scene as “competitive, diverse, with very high standards” – but he rose to the kitchen’s top ranks. So what is the head chef’s key to creating a true Italian taste? “I always use the best products on the market and keep the dishes uncomplicated. I love to experiment in the kitchen, but if I could only have one meal for the rest of my life it would be plain pasta, cooked al dente with good olive oil and plenty of parmesan cheese. Simple.”
BURRATA WITH GRILLED ZUCCHINI AND WILD MUSHROOMServes 2
• 150g burrata cheese • 100g zucchini• 20ml olive oil• 50g wild mushrooms • 5g fresh basil • 100g cherry tomatoes • 40ml balsalmic glaze • 50g wild rocket • Salt and pepper, to taste
1. Cut the zucchini into thin slices, long ways, then grill on a medium-high heat. Leave it to cool on a tray, then use the slices to make a layer on a small plate. Cover the zucchini with a thin line of balsamic glaze.
2. In a large bowl, mix together the wild mushrooms, rocket, cherry tomatoes, salt, pepper and oil. Place this mixture on top of the plated zucchini.
3. Lastly, take the burrata cheese and place it on top of the rocket. Serve immediately.

RIGATONI ALLA SICILIANAServes 2
• 100g rigatoni pasta• 60g thinly-sliced eggplant • 80ml tomato sauce• 10g shredded mozzarella• 5g fresh basil leaves• 10g parmesan cheese• 10g salted ricotta cheese • Olive oil • Salt and pepper, to taste
1. Cook the rigatoni pasta in a large pot with boiling, salted water for 10 minutes until al dente. While the pasta is cooking, fry the sliced eggplant in olive oil, then leave to cool and drain on kitchen paper.
2. In a deep saucepan, warm the tomato sauce over a low heat, then add the fried eggplant and whole basil leaves. Drain the pasta, add it to the tomato sauce mixture, and sauté for 1-2 minutes.
3. Add the mozzarella, ricotta and parmesan cheeses to the pan. Heat until the cheese begins to melt, and serve immediately.
TRADITIONAL ROAST LAMBServes 4
• 4 baby racks of lamb• 2 whole artichokes• 80g mashed potato per person• 10g demiglace powder • 120g breadcrumbs • 5g mint, rosemary, thyme • Salt and pepper, to taste• Olive oil
1. Heat some olive oil in a pan on a high heat, and sear the lamb on all sides until it has a brown colour all over. Leave it to cool in a baking tray.
2. In a food processor, add mint, thyme and rosemary leaves with the breadcrumbs until
all ingredients are mixed. Roll the lamb in this mixture until fully covered, and put in the oven at 200°C for 30 minutes.
3. While the lamb is cooking, add 10 grams of demiglace powder and the recommended amount of water to a small pot. Boil until it has a thick consistency, then set aside.
4. Cut the artichoke in half and boil for 15 minutes in salted water. Drain, then sauté in a pan with olive oil. Set aside.
5. Heat the mashed potato and place it in the centre of a large plate. Add the lamb, and place the sautéed artichokes around the outside. Cover the lamb with the demiglace sauce, and serve.
