Dr. Theron J. Schue Superintendent The Bettendorf Community School District has heavily invested in the upgrading of the high school and middle school facilities in recent years. Now it is time to turn our attention to the needs of the elementary school facilities. The district is in the process of developing a 10-year elementary facilities improvement plan. This plan involves reviewing and evaluating our current facilities, developing a vision for our elementary facilities, projecting future enrollment and financial expectations, and engaging BLDD Architects to help guide the process and evaluate various options. The strategic objectives of this planning process are to: Align facilities with educational programs. Maximize effectiveness of district resources. Address major planning considerations for the future. Provide equitable facilities for all students regardless of where they live within the community. One of the primary objectives for future upgrades to our elementary schools is to provide all students and staff with an equitable and optimal 21st century learning environment. Characteristics of 21st century schools include creating a variety of learning spaces within the schools that are flexible, collaborative and student-centered. The physical structure is designed to promote health and wellness by providing adequate space, superior lighting and engaging and aesthetically pleasing design. The district will continue to make safety and security its top priority. We will also make any necessary changes to best ensure that all learning spaces are conducive for technology infusion. An Elementary Facilities Advisory Committee has been established to consider the planning issues and make recommendations to the Bettendorf Board of Education regarding a long-term, comprehensive elementary facilities plan. The committee consists of representatives from each elementary, community members and retired district staff. The planning process and current facility options under consideration were presented to parents, staff and community members during building meetings held at each of the district’s elementary schools (Grant Wood, Herbert Hoover, Mark Twain, Neil Armstrong, Paul Norton and Thomas Jefferson) from January 12-21, 2016. Participants worked in small groups to identify the strengths and weaknesses of each option presented. Further community engagement and input will be sought from parents, staff and community members who attend three community meetings. These meetings are scheduled for Wednesday, February 24, Wednesday, April 13 and Thursday, June 9. During each meeting participants will be asked to work in small groups to develop recommendations regarding the information presented. All three meetings will be held from 6–8 p.m. in the Bettendorf Middle School Cafeteria, 2030 Middle Rd. Please join us! SCIENCE - Elementary students experiment with paper chromatography to make a claim about who stole their teacher’s cupcakes!

We are now accepting preschool applications for the 2016-2017 school year. If your child will be four years old on or before September 15, 2016, he/she is eligible to participate.

Funding provided by the State of Iowa in support of the Statewide Voluntary Preschool Program allows us to place children four years of age in local preschool programs. Families of preschool-ers can receive preschool education at no charge for 10 hours per week with parents paying for the balance of the attendance time.

Bettendorf Community School District provides preschool classrooms at Grant Wood, Mark Twain, Neil Armstrong, and Thomas Jefferson Elementary Schools. Children that meet economic eligibility criteria are given preference in the BCSD public school preschool classes. Local preschools participating include: Ready Set Grow Preschool, KinderCare Learning Center, Lourdes Preschool, Redeemer Preschool, St. John Vianney Preschool, Rivermont Collegiate, and Skip-A-Long Child Development Services.

BCS Foundation UpdateBettendorf Community Schools Foundation President Bruce Tinsman and Director Julie Funk presented an update to the board. $136,900 projected programming will be awarded in 2015/16 through grants, scholarships, Parent Teacher Organizations, and after school programs.

High School Course Changes for 2016/2017 Bettendorf High School Principal Jimmy Casas presented new course proposals for 2016/17: AP Computer Science, Heroism in Literature, Honors Earth Science, Job Skills 2 Course, Advanced Manufacturing Career Academy, English Plus. The new English course proposal provides more electives for 9th and 10th grade. Directors approved the course changes.

Modified Allowable Growth/At-Risk ProgramAt-Risk Coordinator Tammy Chelf highlighted some future at-risk program needs :• Continued Professional Development dealing with poverty,
