House Keeping

• Start with a MicroStation 2D DGN.

• Allow Civil to Create/Manage the 3D

• Separation of 2 Worlds but in same DGN

• Doesn’t mean you can’t use 3D Environment

• Think of it as…..

Civil Objects in the Model

• Corridors

• Linear Templates

• Surface Templates

• Surfaces

• 3D Breaks/Strings

• 2D Ruled Geometry & Profiles

Remember Civil Cell is any combination of the above.

Corridors

• Multiple Template Drops

• Uses Super

• Based off Template Drop Interval

• Station Lock/Even Station

Linear Templates

• Single Drop with frequency of drop based off Stroking of Element hung upon

• Use of Site based entities where accuracy > scale

Linear Templates Delta from Corridor

• No Super

• No End Condition Exceptions

• No Secondary Alignment

• No Key Stations

• No Curve Widening

• Design Stage has no Template Management or Critical Sections

Surface Templates

• Apply a Template to a Terrain Model

• Reads template points & components at Origin

• More than Intersections!

Corridor Modeling in Review

• Corridor Resides in the DGN– 2D and 3D Model

• Integrate Corridor and Site Modeling– Both work on same model

– Use the tools that best fit the situation

• Target MicroStation Elements

• WYSIWYG– Use Reference Files to Control Display of Model

– Drainage, Bridges, etc..

Page 14: Best Practice: Corridor Modeling - bentleyuser.dk · • Corridor modeling can work across reference files. • Because everything is now stored in the dgn, it is necessary to allow

Corridor Modeling

• “The 3D model is no longer a byproduct of the Design, it is the design.”

• Allows Design Time– Visualization

– Clash Detection

– “Engineering Sanity”

Template Library

• Same Format

• Additions & Changes– Removed Vertical Styles Constraints

– Superelevation Flags

– Naming

• Styles = Feature Definition

• Targets Renamed

Active Template Enhancements in MR 1

• Q&A and Sort– Point Feature Definitions

– Component Feature Definitions

Component Feature Definition

• Organize by Material Type to Quantify

• Rendering– Design Time

– Hollywood BIM & Viz

• Exclude from Top/Bottom Mesh Toggle

Point Feature Definitions

• Determines if Template Geometry is Drawn– Allows Civil Cell with Corridors

• Separate Feature Definitions for Points on different Layers of Pavement– RT_EOP needs to Create Template Geometry and used with

Graphical Filter to Create a Terrain model of Proposed Terrain Model

– RT_EOP_AGGR_BOT does not need template Geometry and is included in the Subgrade Terrain Model.

Managing Corridors

• Corridor modeling can work across reference files.

• Because everything is now stored in the dgn, it is necessary to allow the storing and retrieval of all civil information in separate files, and allow all the processes involved to work smoothly across all files and nested references.

• Processing of Corridor required Read/Write– Limits Processing Tree to what lives in Active DGN

Referencing & Accessing Data

Page 23: Best Practice: Corridor Modeling - bentleyuser.dk · • Corridor modeling can work across reference files. • Because everything is now stored in the dgn, it is necessary to allow

23 | WWW.BENTLEY.COM | © 2014 Bentley Systems, Incorporated

• Promotes Federated Workflow

• Allows long jobs to be broken into several DGNS

– View All Corridor in one DGN

– Still cut Sections on All

– Reference same Geometry and Super

• Corridors can be split:

– Contract

– Construction Staging

– What makes SENSE

Referencing

Page 24: Best Practice: Corridor Modeling - bentleyuser.dk · • Corridor modeling can work across reference files. • Because everything is now stored in the dgn, it is necessary to allow

24 | WWW.BENTLEY.COM | © 2014 Bentley Systems, Incorporated

• LEGO Concept– Referencing

• Division of Labor

• Controls Processing

– Use Mulitple Corridors and Linear Templates instead of one Template.

Keep it Simple

Page 25: Best Practice: Corridor Modeling - bentleyuser.dk · • Corridor modeling can work across reference files. • Because everything is now stored in the dgn, it is necessary to allow

25 | WWW.BENTLEY.COM | © 2014 Bentley Systems, Incorporated

• Used to be combined – a corridor could only be clipped by other corridors that targeted it.

• Target Aliasing and Clipping are now completely separate!

• Referencing is still key.

• Target MSTN Elements/Meshes

• Additionally Clip on MSTN Shapes or Terrains

Target Aliasing and Clipping

Page 26: Best Practice: Corridor Modeling - bentleyuser.dk · • Corridor modeling can work across reference files. • Because everything is now stored in the dgn, it is necessary to allow

26 | WWW.BENTLEY.COM | © 2014 Bentley Systems, Incorporated

• Use of Feature Definition Constraints with Corridor Reference are Costly compared to Point Controls

• Perform Clipping when Complete or control through Referencing

• Clips that are Linear/Parallel– Consider End Condition Exception

– Add addition Template drop removing unneeded Components

Tips with Large Models

Tips

• Reference in Geometry and Super

• Build Terrains in other DGNs and reference in the Corridor– Corridor Updates prevent Terrain Updates

• More Graphics in 3d Model…more to process for Dynamic Sections.

• Overlay Runs to formulate Profile needs to occur in DGN where Geometry Exists.
