Wearing a Half Face MaskRespirator Can Prevent LeadPoisoningBy Rafael on January 24th, 2014

3M R7511ES and 7500 – Best half face mask

A half face mask air purifying respirator is an affordableand easy-to maintain protective device. It is mainly used inindustrial work settings to prevent lead poisoning, becauseit can protect the wearer from breathing dust smokes andfumes that are filled with poisonous lead. Even thoughthese respirators cannot provide protection against high leadcontent, it is enough for common construction and industrialworkplace settings. This article covers the basics of a reliablerespirator as well as the primary requirements stipulated byOccupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA).

Bear in mind that there is no need to wear a half face maskrespirator if you can bring down the lead content in the airthrough certain changes in the workplace, changing certaintools, or using an effective ventilation system. Basically, OSHA

requires that employers control lead levels. You need to userespirators if the lead content in the air is 50 μg/M3 or more.

Also take note that not every person can wear a half face maskrespirator. They may put a lot of stress on the lungs and theheart of some individuals. That is why it is recommended toconduct a medical evaluation first to check if the workers cansafely wear an air purifying respirator. This is usually the casefor people with lung problems, heart complications, smokersand anyone who find it hard to breathe while wearing a facialmask.

For proper protection, it is important to use the right type ofrespirator filters. Use N-100, R-100 or P-100 filters, which aremainly used to shield away poisonous lead. If there are also oilmists in the area, it is recommended to use P-100 filters. Takenote that filters are needed for other hazardous substances.

Similar to shoes, respirators are available in different sizesand shapes. A half face mask should fit well to provide utmostprotection. The right size and shape for a respirator must bechosen to be comfortable and snug-fit. An easy way to test thefit is to shake your head. If the respirator stays in place, it iswell-fitted.

Employers are required by OSHA to test the fit of the airpurifying respirator. There are two types of fit tests. Thesetests determine how much the mask leaks around the seal. The qualitative fit test is cheap and easy to do. An odorouschemical will be emitted around the respirator seal. If thewearer can smell the odor, the respirator is not well-fitted. Onthe other hand, the quantitative test requires using electronictool to measure how much the respirator is leaking. The mainadvantage of this test is that it can determine how well therespirator fits. This will provide you the chance to comparevarious masks and choose the one that is suitable.

It is very crucial to take note that a half mask does notguarantee full protection. It may leak too much to protectagainst high lead content. Half-face masks can provide superbprotection if the amount of lead in the air in the workplace isbelow (500 μg/M3).

The Difference between Half-Face Air Mask and Full-FaceRespiratorsBy Rafael on January 24th, 2014

In general, respirators can be divided into two main categories– more affordable disposable air mask and recyclable airfilters that use expensive canisters to purify air. Recyclablerespirators are also known in the industry as Air PurifyingRespirators (APR), and is further divided into two sub-categories – full-mask respirators and half-face air mask.

It is very important to be familiar on the types of air masksyou use in different workplace settings and types of hazards.A disposable face mask doesn’t filter air like recyclablerespirators. Hence, it is best know more about them and doyour research to know when it is proper to use a disposablemaskor recyclable respirator.

Common air masks fit loosely over the mouth and the nose andcan protect the wearer from splashes as well as sprays. Theyare used to prevent things to go inside your mouth, as well asthose that get outside of your mouth and nose. For instance, these masks are normally given to a patient of respiratorydisease that is contagious through airborne transmission.

The primary disadvantage of a face mask is that it is noteffective in protecting the wearer from taking in smallairborne particulate because they are often not snug fit.It is recommended to use on minor medical and surgicaloperations.

Meanwhile, respirators provide all the advantages that an airmask can offer. Aside from that, the tighter the fit of therespirator allows the wearer to breathe the air that passesthrough the filter material. This filter is particularly designedto catch small airborne particulates and the wearer will safelybreathe clean air.

Similar to recyclable air filters and disposable air masks, half-face respirators and full-face respirators have their own set ofinstances where using one type is much suitable. In general, ahalf-face respirator must be used in workplace settings wherethe eyes don’t need protection from the air or vapors thatare present in the environment. There are gases that may bepresent in a hazardous area that can cause serious damage aswell as irritation to the eyes. Certainly, these instances wouldcall for the worker to use a full-face mask.

One of the downsides in using a full-mask respirator is thatthe lens could be damaged after long-term use making it much

harder to see while working. Also in industrial painting, themask may also be covered with the paint spray. This too canalso obstruct the vision. If this is the case, you need to find alens covering that you can just attach to the air mask. You caneasily peel off the protective sheet after using.

Regardless if you are using a half-face mask or a full-facerespirator, you must always make certain that the mask hasthe right fit for your face. It is crucial for employees to a fittest before working in a hazardous area to make certain thatthe mask can provide the proper protection that you need.Once you use it properly, recyclable air filters may not only beconvenient but also an integral part of the worker’s personalprotective tool.

How to Choose a PaintingMaskBy Rafael on January 24th, 2014

If you are planning to undertake a do-it-yourself homeimprovement project, using a painting mask to protectyourself against fumes from paint and other chemicals isessential. These fumes are potentially toxic and can causerespiratory conditions. There are two types of protectivedevices that you need to consider: dust masks or particulatefilters that will protect you against harmful particles andchemical cartridge respirators.

Particulate filters are a type of painting mask that purify theair you are breathing when you are painting or working withchemicals in your garden. They are either disposable or can bereusable if you can replace the filters they use. These maskscover your mouth and nose to protect you against airborneparticles such as dust, liquids and mists. However, they willnot protect you against most fumes as well as vapors or gases. To ensure that the mask you buy will provide you with theprotection that you need, look at the NIOSH rating, which is analphanumeric code. The letter can stand for N, which means itis not oil-proof, R which is resistant to oil for up to eight hours, and P which is oil-resistant for longer than eight hours. The

number refers to the percentage of one millimeter particlesthat the mask removed during lab tests and can be rated 95,97 or 100 percent.

The most common mask rating used by DIYers is N95 sincethis provides the adequate amount of protection for mosthome improvement projects. However, if you are dealing withmore toxic chemicals, you might want to get a painting maskthat has the highest rating of P100 which will filter out all oil-based and non-oil-based particles.

In addition if you are looking for a comfortable fit youshould buy disposable masks that have foam face seals orthose with exhalation valves that will make breathing whilewearing the mask easier. On the other hand, if you are moreconcerned about the protection you get, choose masks thathave adjustable nosepieces that will give you a tighter fit orconsider reusable masks that have sealing gaskets since thiswill protect you against toxic particles such as asbestos.

A chemical respirator painting mask has a chemical cartridgewith a carbon filter that absorbs vapors and gases and thecartridge can be replaced once it is no longer effective. Theycome in half-face and full-face variants depending on the levelof protection that you need,

These painting mask cartridges come in three types: chemicalfilters that can protect you against vapors but not particlessince they don’t have a prefilter; dual filters that also havea prefilter to remove particulates; and powered air purifyingmasks that use a battery-powered fan that makes breathingeasier by blowing air into the filter. Choose the type ofcartridge that will protect you against the hazards you’ll befacing based on the type of paint or chemical that you’llbe using when you’re working. If you’re not sure, buy therespirator that will provide you with the highest level ofprotection.

Wearing a Spray Paint Mask

A spray paint mask can protect you against harmful fumesfrom paint when you’re doing a home improvement project. However, it is very important that you choose the right maskas well as knowing how to use it safely. Here are some tips onhow to use dust masks safely to ensure that you are getting themaximum protection from them so you can avoid respiratoryand other health problems.

How to Wear a Spray Paint Mask? The correct way to wear a spray paint mask is to position themask over your mouth and nose and then attach the strap atthe back of your head; if there are two straps then refer tothe manufacturer’s instructions. Adjust the flexible metal bandon the bridge of the nosepiece with your fingers to make itconform to the shape of your nose.

You can perform a quick fit test to determine if you have placedthe mask properly. Once the mask is on, put your finger over itand inhale deeply. The front of the mask should move inward. Then exhale deeply; the mask should move outward. If it failsthese tests, adjust the mask again to improve the fit. While thebasic disposable dust mask that you buy at the hardware willnever provide you with a complete seal, if you fit it properlythen it will provide you with adequate protection.

Choosing the Right  a Spray PaintMaskTo ensure that you are getting an adequate level of protection, make sure that you are buying a spray paint mask that israted for the particulates you will face. For the majority ofparticulates, a mask that has an N95 or R95 rating will beenough. On the other hand, if you will be exposed to lead orasbestos, you need to get a mask rated N100 since this willprovide the highest level of protection.

If you will be exposed to ammonia, organic vapor or acid gases,a dust mask will not be enough to protect you and you need toget a respirator that has a chemical cartridge with a filter thatwill remove these when you breathe.

Safety Considerations

• If the mask that you are using becomes clogged you willprobably find it hard to breathe when you’re wearingit. If this happens, dispose of the mask and use a newone. Don’t reuse disposable masks more than once or asinstructed by the manufacturer.

• Don’t let your mask get wet. Many masks lose theireffectiveness once they become wet. Dispose of it and geta new one.

• If you are using a respirator with a filter and you detectsome strange odors while you are using it, replace thefilter using the instructions on the package. You shouldalso do the same if you feel irritation in your throat, lungsor nose.

• If the spray paint mask is broken or the respirator thatyou are using has broken parts, don’t use them any moresince they are no longer effective.

The Importance of Wearing anAir Purifying RespiratorBy Rafael on January 23rd, 2014

Wearing an Air Purifying Respirator

Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA)mandates that workers wear respirators while working in adangerous workplace. An air purifying respirator can protectworkers against harmful particles in the air such as smokes, gases, mists, fogs or sprays. These hazards may cause dizzinessor serious lung infections.

By following the standards and regulations established byOSHA, thousands of deaths can be averted year after year.Professionals who are working on hazardous environmentincluding specialists on hygiene, safety and emergencyresponse need air-purifying respirators as an importanttool for their respiratory protection programs that doesn’tcompromise comfort and performance.

Meanwhile, any air purifying respirator that is certified underthe National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health(NIOSH) requirements found in Part 84 can be used fornegative pressure respiratory protection to shield away fumes, dusts, aerosols and mists that are subject to the statedlimitations of the filter. Air filters are basically labelled with P,R or N and a number that indicates the efficiency such as 95,96 or 100.

However, there is an exception to the usability when asubstance that is certain to OSHA standard such as lead callsfor specific filtration efficiency. If a workplace setting requiresHigh Efficiency Particulate Air (HEPA) filter to fulfill therequirement, it is best to choose a filter that is labelled withthe number 100.

An air purifying respirator is one of the best tools to protectworkers. This can be a full-mask filter that can also protect theeyes or a half-mask filter that can protect the nose. Becauseair purifying filters can be expensive, there are also disposable

respirators that can also effectively filter out particulates buteventually break down due to wear and tear.

Respirators that can purify the air are generally composedof high-quality filters and cartridges that can eliminateparticulates from the air by passing the air through theair-cleaning element before it can reach the user. However, there are respirators that don’t have canisters or disposablecartridges.

In buying a respirator, make certain that you are purchasingthe right type if your purpose is to purify air. There’s apossibility that you may buy particulate respirators thatcan also capture particulates such as mists and dusts butcannot provide respiratory protection against vapors andgases. Particulate respirators usually have N-100, N-99 orN-95 rating. Using letter N is an indicator that the respiratoris non oil-resistant and the number signifies the percentage ofairborne particles that were filtered out from the respirator.

An air purifying respirator is often used in workplace settingsthat contain hazards from dangerous gases and particulates. With different nature of vapors, the canisters used in theserespirators are particularly designed for specific hazards.Hence, it is very crucial that employers as well as employeesknow what kinds of gases could be present in the site and knowwhich respirator to choose to deal with the safety concerns.

Wearing the right type or respirator is an important safetyprecaution. Be certain that you understand the importantaspects of respirators before you even enter a hazardous worksetting.

However, the 3M N95should not be used in workplaces where oil-based particles areproduced since the mask will not provide protection againstthem.

However, workers using the respirator should still follow thesame precautions that they need to take with other particulaterespirators. These include:

• Shaving or trimming facial hair such as thick beardsand sideburns as well as mustaches since these mightprevent the mask from fitting securely on the worker’sface, creating the risk that hazardous particles mightpenetrate the respirator.

• Seeking the advice of a doctor or other healthprofessional before using the respirator if the worker hashealth conditions involving the respiratory system suchas asthma and lung disease, as well as cardiovascularproblems.

• Performing fit checks before using the respirator toensure that it fits securely on the worker’s face to providethe maximum level of protection. For example, once themask is on the worker should cup his or her hands infront of the mouthpiece and inhale deeply. If the workerfeels that the mask moves inward then the respirator fitssecurely; if not, then they should adjust the mask and re-perform the test until it passes the fit test.

• Not reuse the 3M N95 beyond the time recommendedby the manufacturer’s instructions. Reusing disposablemasks increases the risk that the respirator may nolonger be effective in protecting the worker againsthazardous particles.

3M respirators provide outstanding protection for workersin hazardous environments, provided the appropriate one ischosen for the particular hazard they are facing. In addition, there are a host of other factors to take into consideration whenchoosing which respirators are the appropriate ones to use fora certain workplace. Here are some of the things you have toconsider:

• Fit. The 3M respirators that you select should notonly provide the proper fit for the worker using it asdetermined by a qualitative or quantitative fit test. Inaddition, the mask chosen should also be comfortable forthe worker to wear since they will have it on for hoursat a time while in the workplace. If the worker removesthe respirator for any period of time due to discomfort,it may expose him to contaminants that could causerespiratory and heart problems.

• Protection factor. To determine numerically what 3Mrespirators will provide adequate protection against thehazards present in the workplace they will be used, dividethe concentration of air contaminants present by theoccupational exposure limit or OEL. This will give youthe hazard ratio of the workplace. Then look for modelsthat have protection factors that should be at least equalto but ideally greater than the hazard ratio.

• Respirator characteristics. You should look at theinstructions of the respirator you are considering tosee if they are able to help protect workers againstthe particular hazards they will be encountering in theworkplace environment. These must be always carefullyreviewed before use to ensure that the respirator isappropriate to the place where it will be utilized.

In addition, there are some restrictions to the use of 3Mrespirators that the user should keep in mind:

• They should not be used in environments where theconcentration of contaminants present an imminentdanger to the user’s health or life as well as inplaces where the concentration of the contaminants isundetermined or where the level of oxygen is below 19.5percent.

• They should not be used by workers with facial hair, deformities or other conditions that would prevent therespirator from making direct contact with the wearer’sface since this would compromise the integrity of therespirator and risk contact with contaminants.

• They should not be used in environments where thecontaminants exceed the maximum levels established bythe relevant regulatory agencies.

• The respirator should only be used as directed and not beabused in any way since this could damage the protectivedevice and expose the user to harm.

If employers are using 3M respirators they should set up amanagement program that adheres to the basic requirementsof the OSHA Respiratory Protection Standard. This program

should include training the workers in the proper use of therespirator, including how to conduct fit tests to determineif the device is still working effectively as well as how tomaintain reusable respirators to ensure that they remain ingood working order.
