Bernardo Bernardi (1921. – 1985.) bio je hrvatski dizajner, arhitekt, istraživač,
poseban prijatelj...
U vrlo kvalitetnom stvaralačkom periodu pedesetih i šezdesetih godina prošlog
Ponovna proizvodnja Bernardijeva namještaja govori o nezastarijevanju artefakata
stvorenih prije pedesetak godina, o njihovoj svevremenoj kvaliteti i neupitnoj
funkcionalnosti.

Bernardo Bernardi (1921 – 1985), Croatian designer, architect, researcher, good
friend…he started creating spaces for living in the 1950s up until his early death,
which were in their concept and quality unquestionably authentic and, at the same
time, internationally competitive. His furniture design is comparable in its quality and
attitude to other representative examples from the period in question; it has not lost
its idiosyncrasy, topicality and freshness.
From the very first day, he distanced himself from the tested forms of his profession
and usual career paths. He was a man with a wide range of interests, an architect by
education, an interior designer by vocation and a custodian of culture by spirit; he was
tackling the relationship between man and space for almost four decades. He was
looking for a synthetic design formula that would include all spheres, from totality to
details, from philosophical and conceptual standpoints, over organization and shaping
of space to the very furniture and objects that will be placed within and fill it.
In a very fertile period in the 1950s and 1960s, Croatian architects and designers
affirmed the design of clients’ living spaces as a formative part of the architectural
process. This is especially visible in the work of Bernardo Bernardi, and the tendency
towards total design in terms of design of furniture for specific projects, as well as
in terms of integration of works of the then most exceptional artists, was almost an
obsession of his. This is certainly most visible in the project then known as Moša Pijade
Workers’ University in Zagreb (architects: Nikšić, Kučan, 1961). Bernardi contributed to
the specific identity of this project, the symbol of unquestionable achievements in
architecture and design, by designing furniture for it. The same could be said for the
Hotel Maestral in Brela (architects: De Luca, Salaj, Rožić, 1965).
The renewed production of Bernardi’s furniture tells us about the contemporaneity
of the artifacts that were created fifty years ago, about their lasting quality and
unquestionable functionality. It is also a contribution to the awareness of the
complex set of values concerning the created culture of space that existed in the
last century.
