REGAL GLORY GOES ALL THE WAY IN MATRIARCHBy Tracy Gantz and Molly Rollins

Peter Brant had to bid $925,000, the co-top price of the sale,

to get Regal Glory early this year at the Keeneland January Horses of All Ages Sale. That looked like a bargain at Del Mar Nov. 28, as Regal Glory became a grade 1 winner in the $400,500 Matriarch Stakes (G1T).

The race also cemented trainer Chad Brown's recent domination of the Matriarch. The New York-based trainer has won four of the last five editions, with Off Limits in 2017, Uni in 2018, Viadera in 2020, and now Regal Glory.

Favoritism ping-ponged between Regal Glory and Yellow Ribbon Handicap (G2T) winner Princess Grace leading up to the Matriarch, a one-mile turf event for fillies and mares 3 and up. Ultimately, Princess Grace went off as the narrow 3-2 favorite over Regal Glory at 8-5.

The biggest question was who would set the pace. Princess Grace had won the Yellow Ribbon coming from off the pace and lost the Nov. 6 Goldikova Stakes Presented by PNC (G2T) after having to set the fractions.

None of the six Matriarch entrants are frontrunners. When the gate opened, Kent Desormeaux, riding Princess Grace from the rail, wrestled her back to last. Jockey Jose Ortiz let Regal Glory head to the front from post 6, and no one pushed them.

That allowed Regal Glory to gallop along all by herself, and she got away with the first quarter-mile

in :24.06 and a half-mile in :48.50."I thought I'd have the lead and

thought I was the only real speed in the race," said Ortiz. "We got away with some easy fractions, and then she had lots for the finish."

Turning for home, Regal Glory maintained her lead, while Desormeaux tried to rally Princess Grace. Desormeaux attempted to split horses and had to check Princess Grace, who despite the traffic gamely began making up some ground.

Regal Glory had plenty of run left, though, and was easily able to hold off the field. She scored by 2 1/2 lengths, stopping the clock in 1:35.33 on the firm turf. Zofelle, second for most of the race, finished in that position, a length in front of Princess Grace. Viadera, last year's winner, ran fourth, followed by Fast Jet Court and Bodhicitta. The winner returned $5.20 for a $2 win ticket.

"Just go to the lead—that's what my boss told the jockey,"

said Jose Hernandez, Brown's assistant. "She's a really nice filly and she did it all."

Brown has trained Regal Glory from the outset, initially for breeder Paul Pompa Jr. In Pompa's colors, the 5-year-old Kentucky-bred daughter of Animal Kingdom—Mary's Follies, by More Than Ready, won five stakes, including the 2019 Lake Placid Stakes (G2T), in which she dead-heated with Varenka.

Pompa, whose horses included 2008 champion 3-year-old male Big Brown, passed away Oct. 9, 2020, just a month after Regal Glory won the Kentucky Downs Ladies Turf Stakes (G3T) at Kentucky Downs. Lane's End offered the complete dispersal of Pompa's Thoroughbreds at the Keeneland January sale, and Brant bought Regal Glory there in the name of his White Birch Farm.

Mary's Follies, also part of the dispersal, sold to BBA Ireland for $500,000. The mare has produced graded winners Night Prowler and Cafe Pharoah in addition to Regal Glory. Her latest reported foal is a yearling Connect colt, bought for $185,000 by OXO Equine at the Keeneland January sale. She was bred to American Pharoah for 2022.

The Matriarch was Regal Glory's fifth start for Brant and third win for him. Earlier this year she captured the Plenty of Grace Stakes at Aqueduct Racetrack and Fasig-Tipton De La Rose Stakes at Saratoga Race Course. With the Matriarch, Regal Glory raised her lifetime earnings to $1,244,884 with a 9-4-0 record in 16 starts.

Verbal Stays Perfect in DeMilleEarlier on the card, Chad Brown nabbed his first of

the day when Juddmonte's 2-year-old Verbal rallied off a swift pace in the $102,500 Cecil B. DeMille Stakes (G3T) to remain perfect in two starts. The homebred son of Flintshire was highly touted coming into the Cecil B. DeMille after turning heads in a flashy Oct. 10 debut performance at Belmont Park.

Bet down as the even-money favorite in the field of 10, which included the stakes-placed Optimising from the Michael McCarthy barn, Verbal settled midpack early under rider Jose Ortiz. Up front, Groovy Huey and Get Back Goldie sparred through a blistering opening quarter mile in :22.04 and a half in :46.10 that eventually left both horses waving the white flag at the top of the lane. As the gap began to close on the tiring frontrunners into the bend, Ortiz set Verbal down to a drive and the colt responded willingly, collaring Cabo Spirit in the final yards, who was battling a game 49-1 Barsabas to his inside. As the three hit the wire, it was Verbal on top by a half-length over Barsabas with Cabo Spirit a nose back in third.

The mile on a firm turf course was timed in 1:36.16. Verbal paid $4 to win from a $2 win bet.

"(Verbal) won easy last time, but that was against maidens," said Ortiz. "He was running against winners today, much better horses. I knew there would be speed in the race so, even though I had the outside post, I was able to drop over and save some ground. He came running when it counted. The boss (Brown) knows how to spot a horse. He had it right today."

"I liked the way he was coming into this race, he's been training well," said Brown's assistant Jose Hernandez. "It worked out like we thought. He's got a really good turn of foot and he got there. We didn't

have much luck yesterday, but this is a really good start for today."

Verbal became the first North American graded stakes winner for his sire Flintshire, who was recently relocated to Haras de Montaigu in France for the 2022 season after standing five seasons at Hill 'n' Dale Farms in Kentucky. Produced from the winning Bernardini mare Endless Chat, he is a half brother to graded stakes-placed Toledo (Into Mischief). Endless Chat has a yearling colt by Arrogate and delivered an Into Mischief colt this past spring. She was bred to Kantharos for 2022. BH

GUN RUNNER BREAKS FRESHMAN SIRE PROGENY EARNINGS RECORDBy BloodHorse Staff

Three Chimneys' Gun Runner, the 2017 Horse of the Year and the

leading sire of 2-year-olds worldwide as well as the leading freshman sire in 2021, has established an all-time progeny earnings record for a first-crop sire, eclipsing super sire Uncle Mo's first-crop earnings record established in 2015. To put the significance of this accomplishment into perspective, Uncle Mo's first crop earnings surpassed the previous record established by the legendary Tapit back in 2008.

The previous first-crop progeny earnings record of $3,670,354 as reported by BloodHorse and $3,717,490 as reported by Thoroughbred Daily News, was surpassed Nov. 28 when the Tom Amoss-trained Shotgun Hottie won the first race at Churchill Downs, becoming winner No. 22, boosting Gun Runner's earnings over $3.8 million. Gun Runner's milestone earnings record mirrors that of Uncle Mo's, having sired two grade 1 winners including the undefeated

NetJets Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies (G1) captress Echo Zulu. Their records differ, however, in that Gun Runner has sired one more graded stakes winner than Uncle Mo, with fewer starters.

"Gun Runner's record start at stud is a crowning achievement for the farm and its philosophy." said Three Chimneys' owner Gonçalo Torrealba. "To surpass a record established by Uncle Mo, and Tapit previous to that, clearly compares Gun Runner favorably at this point in time with two of the most influential sires at stud today. He not only established a new progeny earnings record but he is also the leading sire in America by percent stakes

winner to runners among all sires, pretty astonishing. Three Chimneys' whole team is grateful to the breeders who continue to support him with great mares, and a special thanks to partner Ron Winchell. He has been fantastic. I am grateful for his continued commitment to breed his best mares and race their progeny. Trainer Steve Asmussen has created his legacy through Horse of the Year Gun Runner and his progeny. Thank you, Steve."

Echo Zulu is Gun Runner's top earner, having collected $1,480,000 to date from her victorious four starts, which also include the Frizette (G1) and

Spinaway (G1) stakes. Gun Runner's other graded stakes winners are Gunite, who took the Hopeful (G1); Wicked Halo, winner of the Adirondack (G2); and Pappacap; the Best Pal (G2) winner who went on to finish second in the TVG Breeders' Cup Juvenile Presented by Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance (G1). He has also sired Kip Deville Stakes captor Concept and Nov. 23 Zia Park Princess Stakes winner Optionality. BH

HOPEFUL TREASURE DIGS DEEP IN FALL HIGHWEIGHT SCOREBy BloodHorse Staff

Just In Time Racing's Hopeful Treasure wore down the pacesetter Chateau and staved off a late charge

from Green Light Go to post an 18-1 upset in the Nov. 28 $200,000 Fall Highweight Handicap (G3) at Aqueduct Racetrack.

Trained by Michael Catalano Jr., who picked up his first graded stakes win, the 4-year-old Oxbow ridgling entered the six-furlong test for 3-year-olds and up from a smart allowance score at the same distance Nov. 3 at Parx Racing under returning rider Mychel Sanchez.

"He ran a monster race last out and he was just starting to come into himself. He was feeling great, and this was his owner's (Tony Como) idea. He said, 'Let's give this horse a shot,'" Catalano said. "Tony has had the confidence in him from day one. He ran a couple of good races in his past, he just needed some time to mature into himself and grow. He got a great ride from his jockey in his last start and today he got the same ride. It just worked out."

Hopeful Treasure, who was making just his third stakes appearance and carrying 128 pounds, tracked the speed of Chateau, who was carrying a field co-high of 131 pounds, through splits of :22.51 and :45.66 over the fast main track.

Chateau opened up through the turn as Hopeful Treasure continued to chase in second and graded stakes winner Green Light Go angled off the rail from third to launch his bid. Chateau opened up a 1 1/2-length advantage at the stretch call, but Hopeful Treasure wore down his rival inside the final sixteenth and held off the outside-rallying Green Light Go to win by a head. Hopeful Treasure covered the distance in 1:11.19, paying $38 on a $2 win bet.

The victory marked the second graded stakes score for Sanchez. The rider said he tried to repeat the winning formula from the Parx allowance score.

"I broke awesome and got in good position early in the race. I was always confident," Sanchez said. "I knew I could go by the one horse (Chateau) any time. I was only concerned if anyone else was going to close better than him, but he got it done.

"I know him really well even though it's only been my second time riding him," added Sanchez. "I've worked him since he was a baby. I told the trainer and

owner that he was going to compete and run his best race. They just had him ready."

Hopeful Treasure made two previous stakes attempts, both in 2020 on the New York Racing Association circuit, finishing fourth in the Gold Fever at Belmont Park and eighth in the H. Allen Jerkens Presented by Runhappy (G1) at Saratoga Race Course.

"There's a lot of options open for him now. Today was a good day for him," Catalano said. "I just hope he gets back to the barn in good form and comes back as good as he's been. We'll see what the next task is.

"He's learning his own running style. He's a horse that has a lot of ability that he doesn't know what to do with yet. He's trained exceptional and everyone has done a good job with him back at the barn."

Green Light Go completed the exacta by 3 1/2 lengths over Chateau. Wendell Fong, War Tocsin, Sir Alfred James, Smooth B, and Rough Entry rounded out the order of finish.

Hopeful Treasure has banked $282,402 in 14 career starts, from which he has collected a 6-3-1 record. Agent Mike Pino purchased the bay for $6,000 from Ballysax Bloodstock from the 2018 Fasig-Tipton Kentucky October Yearling Sale.

Bred in Kentucky by Calumet Farm, Hopeful Treasure is out of the Giant's Causeway mare Elle Special, who delivered a Lord Nelson colt this year. Elle Special was bred to Kantharos for 2022.

Another Stakes Win for Change of Control in Autumn Days

Perry Harrison's Change of Control repelled 6-5 favorite Too Sexy's deep-stretch bid to post a victory by three-quarters of a length in Sunday's $150,000 Autumn Days Stakes for fillies and mares 3-years-old and up going six furlongs on Aqueduct's outer turf.

Change of Control, who already registered a pair of graded stakes wins in her 5-year-old campaign, including a last-out score in the Buffalo Trace Franklin County in October at Keeneland, tallied her fourth stakes win of 2021 for trainer Michelle Lovell.

Athwaaq broke on top from post 6, leading the eight-horse field through fractions of :23.26 and :46.28 over firm going. Jockey Colby Hernandez tucked Change of Control in third position near the rail, with the pocket position enabling her to move up to second out of the turn.

Once straightened for home, Change of Control capitalized with the open seam from the inside, overtaking a tiring Athwaaq. Hernandez kept his charge to task as Too Sexy rallied to pass three rivals, gaining in the shadow of the wire before Change of Control completed the course in a 1:09.14 final time.

Hernandez's rail-riding trip earned Change of Control, off at 7-2, a winner's circle trip, returning $9.90 on a $2 win bet. She improved her career earnings to $739,257 from a 9-6-6 record in 31 starts.

"She gave us a good break and I was right there," Hernandez said. "I tried to pop out and run second but they weren't letting me out. I saw the horse on the front looked like she was going to come out at the top of the stretch and we stayed there and it ended up working out perfect.

"Every single time she runs, it's like she gets better. She's just a cool horse, does nothing wrong, and anything you ask her, she does. She's a very cool horse to ride."

Change of Control is 2-for-2 at NYRA tracks after winning the Intercontinental Stakes (G3T) in June at Belmont Park.

"Colby rode her perfect. He never panicked," Lovell said. "He stayed right there on the inside and she just looked awesome. She did well in New York when we sent her up to Belmont in the summer, so I just thought this race was a really good spot. The owner gave us a lot of time finding the best races for her. She's really thriving and coming into her own."

Lovell said Change of Control will now winter in Louisiana in preparing for her 6-year-old season before embarking on the next phase of her career.

"She'll go to Fair Grounds for the winter. We'll try to map out her races really well over the winter, spring, and summertime and then she'll go to the breeding shed," Lovell said. "I'm not really sure what our plan is from here, but she'll come back to Churchill and come to Fair Grounds with the rest of my barn."

Too Sexy topped the slow-starting Love And Thunder by one length for second. Miss Majorette, Piedi Bianchi, Athwaaq, Raven's Cry, and Secure Connection completed the order of finish.

Change of Control, a daughter of Fed Biz, was bred in Kentucky by John O'Meara. She is out of the multiple stakes-placed Quiet American mare America's Blossom, whose last two reported foals are a yearling Karakontie colt and a weanling Karakontie filly.

Her first time through the auction ring, Change of Control brought $27,000 from Maharg Management when offered by Vinery Sales at the 2016 Keeneland November Breeding Stock Sale. She was later a $95,000 purchase by de Meric Stables from Kaizen Sales at the 2017 Ocala Breeders' Sales October Yearling Sale. BH

HERNANDEZ SWEEPS WOODBINE'S WEEKEND STAKES ACTIONBy BloodHorse Staff

After guiding Pink Lloyd to his final career victory in the Nov. 27 Kennedy Road Stakes (G2), jockey

Rafael Hernandez made a clean sweep of Woodbine's weekend stakes action with wins Sunday on Mrs. Barbara in the Mazarine (G3) and God of Love in the Grey (G3).

Mrs. Barbara, owned by Woodbine CEO Jim Lawson of Spruce Stable, put in an impressive stretch run to capture the CA$156,400 (US122,180) Mazarine and record her first stakes win.

The 2-year-old daughter of Bodemeister was stakes-placed before ever breaking her maiden, sporting a third-place finish in the Aug. 21 Catch A Glimpse Stakes, and was fourth in the Sept. 19 Natalma Stakes (G1T) at 42-1 odds for trainer Mark Casse. Stepping down to maiden company in her last start, Mrs. Barbara scored decisively over the Woodbine Tapeta main track, earning a 93 Equibase Speed Figure.

In the Mazarine, Mrs. Barbara went to post as the second choice behind the Kevin Attard-trained Moira, an impressive winner of last month's Princess

Elizabeth Stakes on debut. Chocolateaddiction broke on top and emerged with the lead after an early tussle for pacesetting duties, taking the field through an opening quarter-mile in :24.11, as Hernandez kept Mrs. Barbara tucked in along the rail in fifth spot.

Chocolateaddiction continued to lead the pack, 1 1/2 lengths ahead of Kanta after a half in :49.57, as Hernandez kept Mrs. Barbara in prime stalking position, sitting third while enjoying the benefits of a ground-saving inside trip.

Around the turn, Mrs. Barbara was full of run, third and gaining quickly on the leaders at the stretch call as Moira came charging up to the inside.

The two fillies then went toe-to-toe to the wire, with Mrs. Barbara fending off her rival by a half-length in a time of 1:44.64. Guileful, at 66-1, was third.

"We broke good and we saved ground in the first turn," said Hernandez. "Then we ended up behind the speed and turning for home, she did her job. I can feel he (Justin Stein aboard Moira) was coming on the inside. So, I just moved my horse a little bit so she could see the other horse coming and she kept going."

Lawson was especially emotional in the aftermath of Mrs. Barbara's Mazarine triumph.

"It's a very special moment," said Lawson. "We did name the horse after my mom. It's always tricky, but this is a superb filly, so it's very exciting. I think back to yesterday actually, and Frank Di Giulio and Pink Lloyd and them asking, 'What would your dad think of this?' And I'm sure dad (Canadian Horse Racing Hall of Fame inductee Mel Lawson) is looking down and is pretty pleased with what his broodmare did. This is a special filly. I love the game and I'm just fortunate to be working at it, and also being in the racing game too… it's pretty great. Mark and his team did a great job with this filly this year. It's so fun, it really is."

Mrs. Barbara, now 2-1-1 from six starts with earnings of $144,809, paid $11.20 for the win. A granddaughter of three-time Canadian champion mare Eternal Search, she was bred in Kentucky by Jim Dandy Stable and is out of the Housebuster mare Destroy. The dam of 10 winners from 12 starters, Destroy is also the dam of multiple graded stakes winner Smokey Fire and stakes winner Utterly Cool, both sired by Smoke Glacken, and stakes winners Ghost Fleet (Arch), Flame Mingo (Blame), as well as the graded stakes-placed mare Search the Church (Holy Bull). Her most recent foal is a yearling Ransom the Moon colt named One for Chap and she was bred to Midnight Storm for 2022.

A race later, Eclipse Thoroughbred Partners and Gary Barber's God of Love rolled home late under Hernandez to notch his second stakes victory in the CA$174,800 ($136,553) Grey Stakes (G3).

The third choice in the 10-horse field, God of Love broke slow and had one horse beat as favored Churchtown led the field through early splits of :24.42 and :49.58. As Churchtown was joined by Ironstone around the turn, God of Love began picking off his rivals from the back of the pack past three-quarters in 1:14.41. Floated six wide into the lane, God of Love rallied powerfully, clearing his foes by 1 1/2 lengths at the wire.

Ironstone was second 1 1/2 lengths in front of On Thin Ice in third. Churchtown faded to fourth. The final time for the 1 1/16 miles on the Tapeta was 1:44.20. God of Love paid $11.60.

"This race was really kind of an obsession for me because it's kind of rematch from the last one because I got a bad trip last time," said Hernandez. "So many horses stopped in front of me (last time) I had to take a hold a few times, and he was coming running. Today they told me, 'Rafi, make sure you're keeping clear. Let him do his race'. That's what we did. He came out running. He showed up and played his game."

It was the second stakes score for God of Love, who captured the Cup and Saucer Stakes Oct. 10. The win also gave trainer Mark Casse the Sunday stakes double.

The first graded stakes winner for his sire Cupid, God of Love, now 2-0-0 from four starts, has bankrolled $208,993. He was bred in Ontario by the late Bill Graham and is out the winning Three Wonders mare No Wonder and comes from the family of grade 1 winners Wemissfrankie and Stormy Pick. No Wonder is the dam of five winners from five foals to race, including the 2018 Clarendon Stakes victor Muskoka Wonder (Into Mischief). God of Love was sold to Eclipse Thoroughbred Partners for $100,000 earlier this year at the Ocala Breeders' Sales March Sale of 2-Year-Olds-in-Training, where he was consigned by Golden Thoroughbreds Training and Sales. No Wonder produced a Where's the Ring filly this year and was bred to Ami's Holiday for 2022. BH

SOUTHWEST TRAINER MORRIS NICKS DIES AT 74By Christine Oser and Lauren Gash

Longtime trainer Morris Nicks, also the father of trainer Ralph Nicks, died Nov. 25 at home in

Waskom, Texas, at age 74. He had been battling cancer."His upbringing and bringing me up was to have a

good work ethic and to start doing things early," said Ralph, who trained 2017 champion 2-year-old filly Caledonia Road. "If you were big enough to hold a pitchfork, you were big enough to start cleaning a stall. Basically if you were big enough to walk, you learned how to lead a horse; the list goes on from there. It's how he brought me around, which probably has to do with some of the things I was able to accomplish and carry on."

Morris was born in Clarksville, Texas, and grew up in the nearby town of Avery. He became a mainstay at the Southwest racetracks. Since official statistics began being tracked in 1976, he trained 819 Thoroughbred winners that earned $15,737,189 through 2018, according to Equibase. Morris retired in 2018 due to leukemia.

"I can remember as a kid a photo of him winning a Quarter Horse futurity or handicap at Blue Ribbon Downs, before it was a recognized racetrack, hanging in our house, which was probably the early 70s," Ralph said.

"His main thing was Louisiana Downs and the Oaklawn Park circuit for the majority of his life," Ralph said. "He took a stint and would go to Kentucky with my mom for about five or six years, but he finished his career at Louisiana Downs and the Fair Grounds."

Morris saddled Run Johnny to win the 1999 Aristides Handicap (G3) at Churchill Downs and Golden Sonata to capture the 2004 Oaklawn Breeders' Cup Stakes (G3). His top earner was Smitty's Sunshine, a seven-time black-type winner who collected $532,219 racing from 2006-08. Smitty's Sunshine's stakes victories came in Kentucky, Louisiana, Florida, and Texas. Morris was also a stakes-winning owner with Pure Tactics, who took the 2013 Barksdale Stakes at Louisiana Downs. Pure Tactics went on to win four more stakes in California for trainer Doug O'Neill and owner Nita Winner. Morris also trained multiple stakes winners Carolina Sky, Groovy Jett, Master Link, Northern Scene, Old Bushmill, Pretty Squall, and Tensas Yucatan.

"Dad was an all-in horseman for the last 30 to 40 years of his life," Ralph said. "If he had an afternoon off he was out buying supplies and hay for the rest of the week. He never took days off." BH

GAFFALIONE, ASMUSSEN, EARN CHURCHILL DOWNS FALL TITLESBy BloodHorse Staff

Jockey Tyler Gaffalione has clinched his sixth-straight Churchill Downs meet riding title. The

Florida-native entered the Nov. 28 closing day program with an insurmountable win lead at the fall meet and wrapped up the meet with a total of 34 wins.

This was Gaffalione's seventh overall riding title at Churchill Downs. He won the 2018 fall meet with 21 wins. The 27-year-old's 2021 fall meet was highlighted by a six-win day Nov. 12 and a five-win day Nov. 25.

Brian Hernandez Jr. and Joel Rosario tied for second in the jockey standings with 18 wins each. Rafael Bejarano finished behind them with 17 wins.

Hall of Fame trainer Steve Asmussen secured his record-extending 25th title with 20 wins. Brad Cox was

second with 11 wins while Kenny McPeek and Mike Maker each had 10 wins.

The fall meet leading owner title went to Mike Sisk's M and M Racing, which had four winners during the meet. Godolphin, Lothenbach Stables, BBN Racing, Ten Strike Racing, the partnership of Paradise Farms Corp. and David Staudacher, and Lynn and Lola Cash (who changed their ownership name to Built Wright Stables half-way through the meet) each had three wins.

The meet held its centerpiece race Nov. 26, the Clark Stakes Presented by Norton Healthcare (G1), which saw Godolphin's Maxfield close out his racing career with a hard-fought half-length victory. BH

KENTUCKY DERBY FUTURE WAGER POOL ONE CLOSESBy BloodHorse Staff

With the Kentucky Derby Presented by Woodford Reserve (G1) still 23 weeks

away, the pari-mutuel field of "All Other 3-Year-Old Colts and Geldings" closed as the 3-5 favorite in Pool 1 of the Kentucky Derby Future Wager and Smile Happy was the 8-1 second choice.

Smile Happy, the 3 1/4-length winner of the Nov. 27 Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes (G2) at Churchill Downs, had his odds drop from 15-1 to 9-1 around 5 p.m. ET when Jim "Mattress Mack" McIngvale, the Houston furniture store owner who campaigned Smile Happy’s sire Runhappy, bet $10,000 to win on the Kentucky-bred colt who is unbeaten in two starts. Additional money flowed late until the 6 p.m. deadline and his odds closed at 8-1.

Jack Christopher (10-1), the impressive Champagne Stakes (G1) winner for trainer Chad Brown who was expected to be the TVG Breeders' Cup Juvenile Presented by Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance (G1) favorite before he was scratched, is expected to resume training in early 2022 following surgery to heal a left shin stress fracture.

Other horses who attracted mild interest from bettors: Claiborne Breeders’ Futurity (G1) winner Rattle N Roll (21-1); Breeders' Cup Juvenile (G1) and American Pharoah Stakes (G1) runner-up Pappacap (23-1); Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf (G1T) runner-up Tiz the Bomb (24-1); and Hopeful Stakes (G1) winner Gunite (25-1).

Total handle for the Nov. 25-28 KDFW pool—the first of five scheduled wagering pools in advance of

the 148th running of the Kentucky Derby on May 7—was $326,448 ($263,008 in the Win pool and $63,440 in Exactas), up 30.9% from last year’s $249,331 ($191,984 in the Win Pool and $57,347 in Exactas).

Inaugurated in 1999, the Kentucky Derby Future Wager has been offered for a 24th consecutive year, but this marks just the ninth time that Churchill Downs has hosted a KDFW pool on closing weekend of its fall meet.

This year's early Derby betting menu also included the Kentucky Derby Sire Future Wager, which, for the seventh consecutive year, provided bettors with a unique opportunity to wager on select breeding stars and their entire crop of juveniles with the hope of winning next year's Kentucky Derby.

"All Other Sires" at 7-2 and Runhappy at 7-1 attracted the most attention from bettors—and McIngvale, who plunged $3,000 on his prized sire around 5 p.m. to lower his odds from 17-1 to the second betting choice. Gun Runner progeny was the 9-1 third betting choice.

Total betting on the Kentucky Derby Sire Future Wager was a record $50,205 ($38,073 in the Win pool and $12,132 in the Exactas), up 5.5% from last year’s $47,567 ($33,269 in the Win pool and $14,298 in Exactas).

The KDFW and Sire Future Wager combined to handle $376,653, a 26.9% jump from last year’s $296,898.

The other Future Wager dates are set for Jan. 21-23 (Pool 2), Feb. 11-13 (Pool 3), March 11-13 (Pool 4), and March 31-April 2 (Pool 5). The lone Kentucky

Oaks Future Wager will coincide with Kentucky Derby Future Wager Pool 4 on March 11-13. BH

JAPAN'S ARROW STUD ANNOUNCES 2022 FEESBy Naohiro Goda

Firenze Fire will begin his stud career for the 2022 breeding season at Arrow Stud

on Japan's Hokkaido Island for a fee of ¥1.5 million, the farm announced.

The son of Poseidon's Warrior won nine graded stakes, including the 2017 Champagne Stakes (G1), in addition to finishing second in this year's Forego Stakes (G1), in which he tried to savage winner Yaupon in the homestretch. Firenze Fire earned $2,730,350 during his five-year race career, during which he accomplished a 14-7-3 record from 38 starts for Mr. Amore Stable.

Danon Premium, another new stallion at Arrow Stud for 2022, will stand for ¥1.2 million. Bred by K.I.Farm and trained by Mitsumasa Nakauchida, the son of Deep Impact won five graded stakes in Japan, including the Asahi Hai Futurity (G1), and was named Japan's 2017 champion juvenile colt for Masahiro Noda of Danox.

The 2022 fee of California Chrome, who was relocated from Taylor Made Stallions in Kentucky to Arrow Stud in 2020, is unchanged and the 2014 and 2016 U.S. Horse of the Year will stand for ¥4 million. California Chrome

has been popular with Japanese breeders, covering 143 mares in 2020 and 154 mares in 2021.

Shanghai Bobby, who was introduced at Arrow Stud in 2019 and whose first Japanese crop becomes 2-year-olds in 2022, will stand for ¥2 million next season, the same fee as in 2021 when he covered 100 mares. BH

CONTRAIL BOWS OUT WITH JAPAN CUP WINBy Bob Kieckhefer

For the second straight year, the Japan Cup (G1) was a retirement party for a Triple Crown winner.

Contrail, who swept through the 2020 Japanese Triple Crown events undefeated, put an exclamation point to his career with a "statement" win Nov. 28 on the Tokyo Racecourse turf.

And he did it both with authority and over Authority, a 4-year-old Orfevre colt who ran well to finish second, two lengths behind the winner.

The stretch run hauntingly resembled the scene a year earlier when Almond Eye, Japan's 2018 filly Triple Crown winner, wound up her career with a victory over the same course. Then, it was Contrail who could only manage a runner-up finish behind the retiree.

This time around the course, it was Contrail's star turn. Under a confident ride by Yuichi Fukunaga, he emerged from mid-field as the runners turned into the long Tokyo stretch. At that point, Authority had moved to the lead for jockey Christophe Lemaire and looked poised to run on to glory.

Contrail moved out toward the middle of the course, got by 3-year-old rival Shahryar, and hit the front with 100 meters to go. He was cruising confidently at the finish and completed 2,400 meters (about 1 1/2 miles) on good to firm turf in 2:24.7.

Shahryar, winner of this year's Tokyo Yushun (Japanese Derby, G1), finished third, giving the late sire Deep Impact first and third placings.

None of the three international runners had much impact on the race. Grand Glory, last seen finishing second in the Prix de l'Opera Longines (G1), did the best, finishing fifth. Broome and Japan, second and fourth in the Longines Breeders' Cup Turf (G1T) at Del Mar in their last race, got home 11th and eighth, respectively.

"I am very satisfied with her performance and her result at fifth place," said Grand Glory's trainer, Gianluca Bietolini. "The experience to run in the Japan Cup was fantastic for us. It's a great race and we would love to come back with another horse."

Patrick Keating, who handled Broome and Japan for trainer Aidan O'Brien, said Broome couldn't recover after missing the start slightly. For Japan, he said, "the track may have been a bit too fast."

The finish of the Japan Cup and Contrail's racing career was an emotional event for Fukunaga and trainer Yoshito Yahagi.

"All I have now is mixed feelings of relief and lonesomeness," Yahagi said.

"He has given me every jockey's dream and I am utterly grateful," Fukunaga added. "The colt shone a bright light over a gloomy year due to the pandemic last season. I'm relieved that we can send him off to his next career with this victory."

Contrail, out of the Unbridled's Song mare Rhodochrosite, went to the post as odds-on favorite even though he had gone winless in his last three starts dating back to the 2020 Japan Cup. Heading into this year's edition, he finished second in his last start, the Tenno Sho (Autumn, G1).

BLOODHORSE DAILY PAGE 21 OF 32MONDAY, NOVEMBER 29, 2021

"The colt had issues before his debut," Fukunaga acknowledged. "So there were always concerns about his form. All I did today is believe in him. He broke well and everything went just perfectly."

Yahagi admitted he was "worried a bit since the pace was slow and he wasn't in that good a position. But we had tuned him up to perfection and the colt gave us all he had in the straight."

While his racing career is done, much is expected from Contrail in the years to come as he heads to stud at Shadai Stallion Station. He followed his sire in winning the Triple Crown while undefeated and now has joined him in winning the Japan Cup. The next step would be to extend the influence of the Sunday Silence/Deep Impact dominance over the nation's racing.

Even before the colt had cooled out, Yahagi was assigning him the goal that has eluded the Japanese racing establishment for decades, the Qatar Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe (G1).

"Wouldn't it be wonderful," Yahagi said, "to win the Arc with an offspring of his someday?"

That would put him one up on his late sire, who could only manage third in the 2006 Arc and then was disqualified even from that when a post-race sample returned positive for a banned substance.

Contrail, owned by Shinji Maeda, was bred by North Hills Co. He won his first seven starts before running into Almond Eye in a race that turned out to be one for the ages. After that Japan Cup, he was idle for more than four months and returned to finish third in the Osaka Hai (G1) at Hanshin Racecourse while facing soft turf for the first time.

It was another seven months vacation before the second behind Efforia in the Tenno Sho Oct. 31 in his penultimate start. BH

GROUP 1 WINNER LOVING DREAM RETIREDBy David Milnes/Racing Post

Loving Dream, a group 1 winner on Qatar Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe (G1) weekend last month,

has been retired to her owner's Lordship Stud in Newmarket.

Trained by John and Thady Gosden, the 3-year-old daughter of Gleneagles enjoyed her finest hour when making most of the running to deny Newmarket rival Believe In Love in the Qatar Prix de Royallieu (G1) at ParisLongchamp.

Under a front-running ride from Frankie Dettori, Loving Dream handled the very soft ground to win by a short neck with French-trained favorite Valia two lengths away in third.

That victory topped her previous highest success in the Ribblesdale Stakes (G2) in June when she provided jockey Robert Havlin with his second win at Royal Ascot.

On that occasion, Loving Dream showed she handled contrasting conditions of good to firm ground when overcoming subsequent QIPCO British Champions Fillies & Mares Stakes (G1) winner Eshaada by three-quarters of a length.

Trevor Harris, owner of Lordship Stud, said: "We've decided to retire Loving Dream as we thought she'd done enough in winning a group 2 and then a group 1.

"When she won the Royallieu, it was Dettori at his finest. He made the running and had a bit up his sleeve to hold the runner-up. She's very well bred and owes us nothing, and is currently out in one of our paddocks.

"The plan would be to send her to Dubawi in the spring, who we feel would be a very good fit for her. "

Joint-trainer John Gosden said: "Loving Dream was a very consistent filly who could handle any ground. She was a very talented performer as she showed when winning at Royal Ascot and then at Longchamp. She was very genuine and was a great credit to the Lordship Stud who owned and bred her."

The win of Loving Dream in the Royallieu extended a good run of success for British trainers in the 1 3/4-mile contest which kicked off with the Gosden-trained Anapurna in 2019 and was followed by Wonderful Tonight a year ago for David Menuisier.

Loving Dream retires with a record of 3-1-0 from 7 trips to the post and $359,882 in earnings. She is a daughter of the group 1-placed Danehill Dancer (IRE) mare Kissable, making her a half sister to Amandine (Shamardal), who captured the 2018 Lady of Shamrock Stakes before finishing third in the American Oaks (G1T) that year at Santa Anita Park.

LOTS TO WATCH AT TATTERSALLS DECEMBER MARE SALEBy Kitty Trice/Racing Post

The four-day Tattersalls December Mare Sale begins Nov. 29, with plenty of

offerings of note in the 1,170-horse catalog.Tattersalls reported that during the 2020

Mare Sale, 735 lots sold from 866 that went under the hammer. Gross receipts totaled 43,111,900 guineas (US$60,324,800), the average price was 58,656 guineas ($82,075), and the median was 20,000 guineas ($27,985).

Those to keep an eye on this year include:MondayLot 1318: Dusty Dream, a 4-year-old filly by

Dubawi out of Memory (Danehill Dancer) consigned by The Royal Studs.

The Queen's beautifully bred half sister to group winners Call To Mind, Learn By Heart, and Recorder—now a promising first-season sire at Montfort et Preaux—is arguably one of the most eye-catching lots early on in the sale.

By a burgeoning broodmare sire in Dubawi, who was responsible for the likes of Cazoo Derby (G1) hero Adayar, Qatar Prix Daniel Wildenstein (G2) winner Real World, and Darley Stakes (G3) scorer Mostahdaf this term, the 4-year-old is offered in foal to Showcasing to boot.

Aside from her black type-winning siblings, Dusty Dream is out of an Irish Thoroughbred Marketing Cherry Hinton Stakes (G2) and Albany

Stakes (G3) winner in Memory, who could provide further updates in due course as she has a yearling Dubawi filly and a Night of Thunder colt foal.

Lot 1426: Sun Tide, a 4-year-old filly by Siyouni out of Midsummer (Kingmambo) consigned by Juddmonte Farms.

The Juddmonte draft is always eagerly anticipated at this sale, and this Siyouni half sister to the great Midday looks a likely candidate to get the green team

off to a good start.Sun Tide won her

maiden on her third start at Chepstow last August and looks a particularly valuable prospect as a broodmare given she is a half sister to six-time group/grade 1 winner Midday as well as the group 3-winning QIPCO British Champions Fillies & Mare Stakes (G1) third Sun Maiden and Lanwades Stud Nell Gywn Stakes (G3) winner Hot Snap.

The 4-year-old has an exciting covering too, having visited last year's QIPCO Two Thousand Guineas (G1) hero Kameko, while she is by one of the best sires in the world in the Aga Khan Studs' Siyouni.

Lot 1567: Cambridgeshire, a 3-year-old filly by Galileo out of Sahara Sky (Danehill) consigned by The National Stud.

Bred on the cross that has famously produced the likes of Frankel, Highland Reel, and Japan, this filly does not quite have their talents but holds plenty of potential when it comes to a paddocks career.

The 3-year-old was placed four times for Martyn Meade but it seems her calling could lie as a broodmare prospect. She is out of the unraced Danehill mare Sahara Sky and is therefore a half sister to group 1 winner Dick Whittington plus four further minor winners.

Under the second dam is champion European sprinter Owington, Nell Gwyn winner and Poule d'Essai des Pouliches (G1) runner-up Nathra, and champion Italian juvenile filly Fly On The Night.

Tuesday Lot 1679: Mohjatty, a 3-year-old filly by Awtaad

out of Ezima (Sadler's Wells) consigned by Shadwell Estate Company.

Whether they are yearlings, horses in training, or broodmares, Shadwell's drafts have been in great demand over the course of sales season and it is not hard to understand why.

Lots who descend from carefully crafted bloodlines are the order of the day and this filly, by Derrinstown Stud's classic hero Awtaad, would be an asset to any stud.

The unraced 3-year-old is out of the stakes-winning Sadler's Wells mare Ezima and is, therefore, a half sister to the brilliant Taghrooda, a daughter of Sea The Stars who swept all before her when landing the Investec Oaks (G1) and King George VI & Queen Elizabeth Stakes (G1) for Shadwell.

There is quality throughout Mohjatty's page, with champion 3-year-old filly Ebadiyla, Moyglare Stud Stakes (G1) scorer Ebadiya, and Gold Cup (G1) hero Enzeli all under the third dam.

Lot 1735: Dandalla, a 3-year-old filly by Dandy Man out of Chellalla (Elnadim) consigned by Spigot Lodge Stables.

A high-class performer for Karl Burke and Nick Bradley Racing, Dandalla cost only €22,000 ($24,208) as a yearling when bought by Kelly Burke from the Castlebridge Consignment at the 2019 Tattersalls Ireland September Yearling Sale. It is fair to say the daughter of Dandy Man will command a fair bit more on her return to the sales ring.

Dandalla proved a high-class talent at 2 when winning her first three starts, including the Albany Stakes and bet365 Duchess of Cambridge Stakes (G2), before finishing a respectable fifth in the Juddmonte Cheveley Park Stakes (G1) to Alcohol Free.

Fourth in the Commonwealth Cup and a stakes winner at Ayr this term, the 3-year-old heads to Park Paddocks as an exciting broodmare prospect. Her dam is a winning half sister to a stakes winner, while further back in the page are Epsom Derby winner North Light, Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud (G1) scorer Gamut, and CIGA Prix du Cadran (G1) victress Sought Out.

Lot 1756: Mondelice, an 8-year-old mare by Montjeu out of Compelling (Kingmambo) consigned by Haras D'Etreham.

The daughter of Montjeu's broodmare record was given a sparkling update or two through her son Dubai Honour, a son of Pride Of Dubai who graduated from handicaps to win the Qatar Prix Dollar (G2) and Prix Guillaume d'Ornano-Haras du Logis Saint-Germain (G2), as well as finishing second in the QIPCO Champion Stakes (G1) at Ascot this term.

With the 3-year-old gelding set for international targets as well as an ambition campaign in Britain, there could well be a winning group 1 update to the page in due course.

Montjeu is an excellent broodmare sire and his daughter, whose Cracksman colt sold for 200,000 guineas ($286,084) to Anthony Stroud at the October Yearling Sale, has an exciting covering in New Bay. Her juvenile filly by Wootton Bassett, Shishito, was a promising second on her sole start to date in the United States.

WednesdayLot 2072: Misty, a 5-year-old mare by Oasis Dream

out of Ceilidh House (Selkirk) consigned by Jamie Railton.

By an established broodmare sire in the venerable Oasis Dream, whose daughters have produced the likes of Tattersalls Irish Two Thousand Guineas (G1) hero Siskin and the top-class Sir Dragonet, Misty also has

the added bonus of having an updated page to boot. Her Kingman half brother, Kinross, was already a

listed winner but added two group wins to his name this term with successes in the Unibet Lennox Stakes (G2) and Betway John of Gaunt Stakes (G3) as well as a fine fourth in the Qatar Prix de la Foret (G1) last month.

Misty, who was covered by the high-flying Time Test, is in turn out of a stakes winner in Ceilidh House, who is herself a half sister to Villa Sonata, the dam of 888sport Solario Stakes (G3) scorer and Poule d'Essai des Poulains (G1) second First Selection.

Lot 2096: Attendant, a 3-year-old filly by Frankel out of Zuhoor Baynoona (Elnadim) consigned by Cheveley Park Stud.

A daughter of Frankel from a typically in-depth Cheveley Park family, Attendant has plenty to offer prospective buyers.

The 3-year-old, who was covered by Twilight Son but is believed to not be in foal, is out of the stakes-winning Elnadim mare Zuhoor Baynoona, herself a half sister to Betfair Sprint Cup (G1) and Diamond Jubilee Stakes (G1) scorer Hello Youmzain as well as Gran Criterium (G2) winner and IDEE Deutsches Derby (G1) third Royal Youmzain.

Frankel has made a good start to his broodmare sire career with a stakes winner and group 1-placed performer in Noble Truth, in addition to two further black-type runners, while Elnadim's daughters have produced Sportingbet W. S. Cox Plate (G1) and Secretariat Stakes (G1T) hero Adelaide and the group 2-winning group 1-placed Zousain.

Lot 2118: Zawahir, a 2-year-old filly by Lope de Vega out of Fawz (Medaglia d'Oro) consigned by Shadwell Estate Company.

Another consigned by Shadwell is this unraced juvenile filly from one of the operation's most illustrious families, being out of a half sister to Aghareed, a listed-winning daughter of Kingmambo and the dam of the unbeaten Baaeed and the high-class Hukum.

Baaeed needs little introduction, having maintained his flawless record when defeating Palace Pier in last month's Queen Elizabeth II Stakes (G1), and there could be a lot more to come for the page with the son of Sea The Stars remaining in training next year.

Further back in the family are the likes of the top-class Nayef and Two Thousand Guineas, Epsom Derby, and Coral-Eclipse hero Nashwan—the pair the offspring of Shadwell's mighty blue hen Height of Fashion.

ThursdayLot 2290: Masonbrook Lady, an 8-year-old mare

by Canford Cliffs out of Gali Gal (Galileo) consigned by Barton Sales.

The daughter of Canford Cliffs is another well-related lot, being a full sister to the stakes-winning Salouen, who ran Cracksman very close when second in the Investec Coronation Cup (G1) at Epsom, as well as being

a half sibling to another stakes performer in Madernia. There could be some exciting updates to the page

too as the 8-year-old has a yearling by Whitsbury Manor Stud's promising young sire Havana Grey.

Further back in the page are the likes of Prix du Muguet (G2) scorer and Gainsborough Poule d'Essai des Poulains third Krataios and Loxias, a group 2 winner at Saint-Cloud and third in the Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud.

Lot 2294: Golden Wattle, a 3-year-old filly by Australia out of Chrysanthemum (Danehill Dancer) consigned by Brook Stud.

Brook Stud's daughter of Australia is a three-parts sister to Cunco, the winner of Sandown's bet365 Classic Trial (G3) and third in the Chesham Stakes at Royal Ascot.

There has also been a more recent update to the page too as, under the third dam, Highfield Princess landed a first black-type success in the Louis Roederer Queen Charlotte Stakes at Chelmsford in July, as well as two group placings in the Sky Bet City of York Stakes (G2) and Whispering Angel Oak Tree Stakes (G3).

Her Frankel three-parts sister added further luster to the book when selling to Joseph O'Brien and Fernando Laffon for 200,000 guineas ($285,241) at the October Yearling Sale. In short, she is a filly with plenty of back class to her name.

Lot 2318: Frisky, a 2-year-old filly by Bated Breath out of Thrill (Pivotal) consigned by Cheveley Park Stud.

Bated Breath has long since proved himself a reliable stalwart of the Banstead Manor team and his daughter looks a likely candidate for any stud in the future.

She is out of a winning full sister to Nell Gwyn Stakes winner and Coronation Stakes (G1) second Infallible—the dam of Tattersalls Falmouth Stakes (G1) heroine Veracious and multiple group scorer Mutakayyef—in addition to the stakes-winning Remarkable and the group-placed Watchable.

Thrill, a daughter of the Newmarket stud's late, great Pivotal, is also closely related to Penchant, the dam of LARC Prix Maurice de Gheest (G1) winner Garswood and Debutante Stakes (G2) third Zagitova.

FLOTUS HAS CHANCE TO BECOME TATTERSALLS' FIRST LADYBy Tom Peacock/Racing Post

Arthur Hoyeau does not fall into the trap of revealing a specific influence in the naming of

Flotus, who has probably caught the eyes of as many studying the racecards as those who have seen her on the track.

An acronym which came into familiarity again with Melania Trump, it was thought to have initially been applied by Nancy Reagan and now belongs to Jill Biden.

"It was around early January, at the time where it was close to when the new president was coming in and it was kind of in the news that there was a change of First Lady, then with (sire) Starspangledbanner being the anthem of America," said Hoyeau.

"I can't exactly remember, but then if she was useless, we would never have said that the name was good! They always look good when they prove to be good."

The filly cost the French-born but internationally-minded agent 125,000 guineas (US$170,396) at last year's Tattersalls Book 1 at what proved to be a highly rewarding visit.

"I work very closely with Jean-Etienne Dubois, he's a French owner-breeder based out of Australia, and we kind of tried to find some fillies that would look mature enough to be competitive at two," explained Hoyeau.

"We were looking for very athletic fillies, maybe not by the most obvious stallions, that we could afford.

"We ended up buying two fillies out of that sale and then I put some customers in partnership, but (Dubois) was really the driving force. We decided to leave one in England and send one to France.

"They're both stakes winners, the other one is called Singforthemoment, she won a listed race at Bordeaux on her second start for Christophe Ferland in early October. So we got away lucky!"

Flotus made a striking start for Simon and Ed Crisford by bolting up on her debut at Goodwood in early May before losing her way a little in the Albany (G3) at Royal Ascot and a couple more runs. However, she was her old self in the British Stallion Studs E.B.F. Ripon Champion Two-Year-Old Trophy and was beaten only a length by Tenebrism when runner-up in the Juddmonte Cheveley Park Stakes (G1).

"From the reports from Simon and Ed, she always showed above average ability, and she's just a very genuine filly, she just wanted to do well for you and she did that first time out," said Hoyeau.

"Silvestre de Sousa gave her a lot of confidence and she made the perfect start, although she was still babyish in her mind then. It was quite early to cope with everything, conditions were extreme (at Ascot), it just didn't work out but luckily she came back to form very impressively.

"Simon had really looked after her, she got her confidence back and she put it all right."

The owners came to the decision that it might be an idea to cash in, with Flotus now decorated with significant black type, and the filly bred in partnership with Newtown Stud will go through the ring Nov. 29 at the Tattersalls December Mare Sale as Lot 1798.

"We kind of all talked about it," said Hoyeau. "They felt there wasn't much on offer on the market, we had a fun year with her and it's just to see if they want to seize an opportunity for something which can fund their racing for the next two or three years.

'It's always the idea when you're not a big operation, to try to still enjoy the game at some level without it costing you anything. It's a partnership of successful businessmen, but they're not a huge operation. We'll see what the market wants to offer but it's always tough, who knows what she can do next year.

"She's got plenty in the tank, especially how she's developed physically, I think everyone will think she's not just a 2-year-old. We went to see her recently and we couldn't be happier with the way she looks."

While Dubois also has an involvement in No Nay Never filly Singforthemoment, who is likely to remain with the same connections at

3, Hoyeau explains that the process to find another Flotus has already begun.

He added: "We bought a bunch in October, going to kind of the same places, Simon and Ed are going to train one or two again and we might buy some more in the spring at the 2-year-old sales.

"It's all about opportunities but the partnership is back for next year, hopefully, we can match it. It won't be easy but that's why we keep doing it."

The four-day sale, which begins Nov. 29 at 9:30 a.m. local time, includes strong consignments from Godolphin, Juddmonte, and Shadwell, and features the dispersal of Sir Robert Ogden's high-class fillies and mares.
