Being from the north, my first spring in Houston has been interesting because the entire winter has felt like a typical Pennsylvania spring. With that being said, it has been delightful to be in Houston and I have enjoyed the seasons so far and I cannot believe we are in April already! We have so much to look forward to this month and I want to share some special highlights with you. The 2015 Texas Alzheimer’s Advocacy Day will take place on April 2 at the Texas State Capitol in Austin. This will be an opportunity to engage with fellow advocates, promote awareness, and educate your state legislator’s office on how Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia affects their constituents. We are pleased to support our Houston & Southeast Texas Chapter in transportation to Austin on April 2 to this very important event. Please pick up a card at the Concierge Desk for additional information regarding this trip. We plan to leave around 7 a.m. and may not return until 7 p.m. Easter arrives on April 5, which is early, but residents will be busy in March finishing the Umbrellas in Art, making Easter cards and decorating “jeweled eggs.” Plans are underway for an Easter egg hunt followed by a lovely luncheon with music from students at Rice University’s Shepherd School of Music. Ladies are encouraged to wear their favorite Easter “bonnet.” The end of the month, April 29, will feature a Spring Style Show facilitated by Nancy Wilfong, Fashion Consultant and Owner of “Get Organized.” As spring unfolds and barren tree branches fill with new buds and flowers blossom into folds of color everywhere, let us be reminded of hope and new beginnings. Neighborhood

Spring is in the air! We havespring fever here at BelmontVillage and the residents of thememory programs are celebratingthe change in season with manyspring-like activities. As everyoneread about in our Marchnewsletter, the residents havebeen enjoying our umbrella artactivity during the month ofMarch. The residents have beenexcited to express their creativityand artistic abilities by creatingtheir own personalizedumbrellas—be on the lookout tohave these displayed throughoutthe community!

There has been a lot more thanumbrella art going on in Marchthough, The Circle of Friends hasbeen celebrating Women’s HistoryMonth. They have learned aboutwomen’s roles in the Civil Warand both World Wars in additionto learning about women’smovements and famous womenin history. To bring it all together, the Circle of Friends visited RiceUniversity for an exhibit titled“Our Present/Their Future;” theexhibit features the portraits andstories of 13 prominent andinfluential Rice Universitywomen, including former trustees, faculty and staff. This provoked aninteresting discussion for the

Circle group, as the outings alwaystend to do.

The Neighborhood has had aneventful March, too. They havehad many Irish themed days inwhich they have been learningIrish Trivia, Irish Humor anddoing Irish crafts. TheNeighborhood has also beenenjoying their weekly scenic driveson Saturdays; they recently wentto Bear Creek Pioneer’s Park toenjoy the sunny day and see theanimals. They had done thispreviously and had such a goodtime that they decided to go againand, of course, they always maketheir McDonald’s run prior to thedrive so that the residents cankeep fueled with their favoritebeverages.

The Belmont Village MemoryProgram Staff wishes all of theresidents and families a happyEaster and a wonderful spring! We’re excited to have such a greatgroup of staff and residents, andwe look forward to enjoying thewarm weather and fun activitiesthat April has in store.

Health

A urinary tract infection (UTI)occurs when bacteria or germsfrom one place enter the urinarytract and cause an infection.

The urinary tract consists of thekidneys, ureters, bladder andurethra. The most common site ofinfection is in the lower urinarytract, the bladder and urethra. Thebladder stores urine until it isflushed out of the body throughthe urethra. If the bacteria aren’tflushed out with the urine, aninfection can develop andpossibly spread up into thekidney.

UTIS are more common inwomen than in men. As we getolder the nerve endings in ourbladders lose their function andwe may not feel any symptoms ofan infection until we are very ill.

Symptoms to watch for are:burning during urination, frequency and sometimes a mildfever. These indicate a lower tractinfection (bladder).

Symptoms of an upper urinarytract infection (kidney), come onquickly and may include highfever with chills, nausea, abdominal pain, vomiting, backpain, and sometimes confusionor delirium.

CARE:• See a doctor as soon as

possible• Take and finish any

prescribed medicine as soonas prescribed.

• Drink plenty of fluids, especially water, clear sodasand cranberry juice.

When to Call the Doctor:• Fever or burning sensation

that doesn’t go away orsymptoms worsen.

• If you begin to experienceconfusion or delirium.

• Back pain, high fever, vomiting or chills develop.

• Abdominal pain develops orgets worse.

Asleep Yet ActiveWhile you’re asleep, your brain

is busy. Medical experts say evenat rest, crucial cognitive functionsare taking place, and neurons inthe brain stay active. Amazingly,as you slumber, the brainperforms several vital functions: itprocesses information, forms newmemories, makes creative connec-tions, cleans out toxins, and storesinformation about physical tasks.
