Important Legislation to Know Immigration Act of 1924
Established strict quotas on immigrants’ ethnicity. Hart Cellar Act of 1965
Abolished the strict quota system. Since 1965, over 28,000,000 million legal immigrants arrived
in the US. Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1982 (IRCA)
Made it illegal for businesses to hire illegal immigrants. Granted amnesty to illegal immigrants living in the US before
1982. Also provided illegal immigrants a means for the legalization
process. Illegal Immigration Act of 1996
Welfare benefits more difficult to receive for (all) immigrants. Authentication by US employers are more strict. Increased security at US borders.
