Curriculum Day and Principal Conference The focus of our curriculum day last Friday was on assessment and evidence of learning Our teachers had the opportunity to work in teams to moderate selected pieces of student work against our curriculum framework The chance for our teachers to work together to discuss student performance is an invaluable one serving to strengthen the judgements that teachers make about student performance against curriculum standards and criteria I was able to participate in sustained conversations with many of our teaching teams throughout the day and am incredibly proud of their work in this area I attended the annual Principalrsquos Conference on Monday and Tuesday of last week along with approximately 3000 school leaders from around the state I participated in a workshop facilitated by Dr Doug Fisher Professor of Language and Literacy Education at San Diego State University exploring best practices in literacy instruction Dr Fisher has worked closely with Professor John Hattie from Melbourne University to examine the impact and extent that key strategies used by teachers in classrooms actually have on student learning A point made by Doug during his workshop really resonated with me and reinforced the importance of reading at home he stated ldquoPractice does not make perfect it makes permanentrdquo Doug made it clear that the difference in reading capability and performance between students is directly connected to the amount of practice that has been undertaken With enough practice the skills become permanent This further supports our commitment to reading as the main focus of our home-learning program

Working Bee Our working bee is on Sunday between 10am and 12 midday I hope that many of you will be able to find some time to be there to support me in making continued improvements to our school Our school grounds are looking amazing but please donrsquot let this be justification for not coming There is always plenty to be done and your help would be greatly appreciated Facilities Upgrades It has been a busy term for upgrades The first wave of touch-screen technology has been installed in the Junior School Building The painting in both breezeway toilets has now been completed and new hand-dryers have been installed to both the middle school and breezeway toilet blocks More of the main corridor changes colour every week New pit drains have been installed near the original school building which is making a huge difference in moving the large volumes of water that we now experience when it rains heavily in the hills The water tanks have had new plumbing fitted and new overflow drains installed The garden bed along Belgrave-Hallam Road is being reinstated with the first section completed over the long-weekend all planted with native bird-attracting plants Further tree works are scheduled to maintain the remnant patch of eucalypts at the end of the basketball courts The restoration of the original school building will begin in the school holidays with the building first being restumped This will allow us to renew the sub-floor structures and re-level the building so that we can begin replacing weathered timbers and applying a new coat of paint Our kitchen garden precinct will pick up momentum again now that some frustrating planning permit issues have been resolved The retaining walls and drainage upgrades are the next stages of work in the project with electricity supply sewerage and grey water connections and site surveying work having already been completed The delay in the issuing of the permit may have set us back but it has not dampened my resolve to create this wonderful
