  • Chairman’s Blog – December 2013

The sun was out, the sky was blue and my bees were working like fury in the recent

sunny spell, in spite of the low temperatures. The ivy has done well this year and is still in

flower. Not only did it satisfy my honeybees, but also the odd butterfly and quite a few

wasps. Not cold enough to kill them off yet. As I write this, it is a cold, cloudy Friday

afternoon and quite sensibly the bees are indoors, as I am!

Not long to Christmas Day now and I have no doubt that many of you will have bee

related items on your Christmas list. Winter is a good time for reading books and even if

you think you know it all, you may learn something or be prepared to challenge the

author. Not all beekeepers sing from the same hymn sheet! Also, Thornes have a sale

coming up at this time of year, so if you need any frames etc., it is worth having a look.

Usually no carriage charges if you spend over £100, so get together with a colleague if

you don’t intend to spend that much.

Thank you to all those who turned out for the AGM. It was good to be faced with a few

questions and I hope we answered them to your satisfaction. We have a number of

volunteers to run the Novice Courses next year and the education group will be having a

meeting in the first week of December to (hopefully) finalise the timetable. Thanks to all

    those who have volunteered.

I do hope that many of you will attend the Christmas lunch on December 15th. If you

haven’t done so already, please book your seats with Jean as soon as possible. It is

usually a very good meal and not much “bee talk”. The Honey Show will be on January

9th, so if last year is anything to go by, there will be many entries in the different classes.

If you haven’t shown before, there is a class for you, so why not have a go?

Well, that’s about it from me for this year. Remember this thought: You can make money

out of beekeeping, if you are lucky, and it may be as much as 5p per hour!

May I take this opportunity to wish you all a very happy Christmas and a prosperous,

    healthy and happy New Year.

    David

    WANTED

Ivor Lucas has lost his bees over the winter.

He would like to purchase a colony to replace

them as early as he can. It is too early to

obtain a nuc, but perhaps someone is

    overstocked and would consider selling

some bees. If you can help ,contact Ivor.
