Feasibility Study Financial

One of Qatar's oldest continuously inhabited areas, Al Wakrah was long a centre for pearl diving and fishing. The traditional dhow boats used in these pursuits inspired the design of Al Janoub Stadium. At its inauguration, a stunning pre-match show paid tribute to Al Wakrah's heritage and to Zaha Hadid, the architect whose firm designed the stadium's boldly futuristic shape.

The Amir Cup 2019 final, which saw QSL side Al Duhail emerge victorious over Al Sadd, provided a taste of the experience future fans will enjoy at this FIFA World Cup™ quarter-final venue. It will also host games at the FIFA Club World Cup 2019.

An extraordinary stadium for an adventurous city

As football fans approach the stadium, they will be greeted by beautiful parkland and the arena’s elegant architecture.

There’s also plenty for fans to do around Al Wakrah before and after matches. Visitors can take a stroll along the waterfront, buy unique local wares at the souq or discover the area's rich history at a museum.

A world-class stadium to benefit the community

It's not just visitors from overseas who can enjoy this wonderful venue. A school; wedding hall; cycling, horse riding and running tracks; restaurants; marketplaces; gyms; and parkland are just some of the new amenities that are being developed to accompany Al Janoub Stadium. Residents will see great long-term benefits from the project, which will bring their tightly knit community even closer together.

After the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022™, Al Janoub Stadium will become a new home for sports and entertainment in southern Qatar. Its capacity will be reduced to 20,000, guaranteeing an electric atmosphere. The other 20,000 seats will be donated to football

development projects overseas, once again demonstrating Al Wakrah's innovative nature and ability to connect with far-off lands.

Beauty meets practicality

The view from inside the stadium is just as stunning, where bowed beams hold up the roof, resembling a ship's hull and allowing light to flood into the arena.

Sustainability runs right through this arena and the surrounding complex, married with eye-catching design. The whole shape of the stadium hides a remarkably green temperature control method, making its clever aerodynamic design do much of the work. The roof provides significant shade, taking the weight off the advanced cooling systems.

Elegant green solutions

The inventive maritime traders who called Al Wakrah home in centuries past would be proud of the creative thinking used to protect the environment they loved. Modern-day Qatar can also be proud, as the country continues to make great strides towards achieving the environmental goals set out in the Qatar National Vision 2030. In November 2018, the stadium received a Class A* sustainability rating from the Global Sustainability Assessment System (GSAS), recognising the project's extensive efforts to protect the environment.

Embracing nature and technology for a better future

Vast green spaces are being developed around the Al Janoub Stadium complex. This impressive parkland, with 800 new trees and low-water-consumption vegetation, will include space for horse riding, running tracks and cycle lanes.

The Supreme Committee for Delivery & Legacy and our stakeholders have also put great thought into the environmental impact of fans travelling to Al Janoub Stadium for FIFA World Cup 2022™ matches.

Roads are being upgraded to reduce journey times and emissions. Capacity for buses is also being increased. However, a new Doha Metro station serving the stadium will tempt many fans off the roads altogether.

Infrastructure for sport, education & communitiesThe football stadium is just the start of the Supreme Committee for Delivery & Legacy's plans. Additional sporting facilities being developed in the precinct surrounding the stadium include cycling and running tracks, and a multipurpose indoor arena. New pedestrian-friendly outdoor spaces will encourage people to keep fit, while a new school will exercise the mind.

A mosque, wedding hall and market are also being constructed, bringing a tight-knit community even closer together. Local business and tourism, meanwhile, will benefit from improvements to the souq, the port and the corniche.

Green technology is just another way that Al Janoub Stadium is making a valuable contribution to the objectives of the Qatar National Vision 2030 (QNV 2030). The project is already enhancing tourism and business opportunities, sporting facilities and community amenities. It is also stimulating economic, social, human and environmental development – all pillars of the QNV 2030 strategy to build a better future for Qatar.
