General Guidelines for Scholarships

IATEFL is providing an increasing number of different scholarships for English language teaching professionals. So you need to read carefully both these general guidelines and the

Page 14: Beasiswa S2

specific conditions for each scholarship you wish to apply for. We're sorry but if you don't keep to the conditions and deadlines your scholarship applications cannot be considered. Our scholarship deadline is 22nd August 2011. But please note that:

BESIG Conference Scholarships have a July deadline and are for attendance at the BESIG conference in the autumn. They are not for the main conference. (The BESIG Facilitators Scholarship is for attendance at the main conference and has a deadline of 22nd August 2011.)

Consultants-E Online IATEFL Scholarship also has different deadlines and you can win a course not a conference attendance

John Haycraft Classroom Exploration Scholarship has a different deadline, June 27th 2011 for the Glasgow Conference 2012

you cannot win the same scholarship twice and if you have won a scholarship already, you cannot apply for another award until 3

conferences have passed

If you are applying for a scholarship, you need to upload a photograph. If you are a winner, this photograph will be printed in the conference brochure and on the scholars' poster. So, while we ask for a passport-sized photo, it shouldn't be passport-glum.

Many scholarships now include as part of the award a year's IATEFL membership. If you are already a member and you win one of these awards, the payment will cover your next year's membership.

All applicants for each scholarship will be informed by email of the result of the selection procedure at the stated date. So, stand by for the news and if you are a winner, let us know immediately whether or not you will accept the award.

If you are a winner, we will discuss details of how the award is to be paid once you have confirmed your acceptance. Most of the award is paid at conference but a proportion can be paid in advance to help with your travel costs.

Conversion Scholarship / Loan Programs

Teacher Scholarship

The Teacher Scholarship Program provides financial aid to highly qualified Kentucky students pursuing initial teacher certification at participating Kentucky institutions. All applicants must be Kentucky residents enrolled full-time (unless enrolled for the final term of a teacher certification program and less than full-time enrollment is required to complete the program). Applicants must demonstrate financial need and meet their institution's education program GPA requirements to qualify for a Teacher Scholarship.

As funding allows, juniors, seniors, postbaccalaureate, or graduate students may receive $2,500 for each semester; and $1,250 for summer. Freshmen and sophomores may receive $625 each semester; and $325 for summer.

If a recipient does not complete his or her institution's education program or does not render qualified teaching service at a school certified by the Kentucky Department of Education, the scholarship becomes a loan and the recipient is required to repay the amount disbursed with 6% interest from the date of disbursement.

To apply, students must complete a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and a Teacher Scholarship application. You can obtain paper copies of the FAFSA by calling the Federal Student Aid Information Center toll free at 800.433.3243 or you can apply online.

The 2012–2013 Teacher Scholarship application will be available from January 1, 2012, to May 1, 2012. To complete the application, you must register for a Zip Access account. After you register, sign in to Zip Access and select the Teacher Scholarship application.

Make sure KHEAA receives your Teacher Scholarship application and the results of your FAFSA need analysis from the Central Processor by May 1, 2012. Your college must verify you are in a major that will lead to initial teacher certification or your application will not be considered. KHEAA will notify applicants regarding eligibility in July 2012. Results will also be available on Zip Access at that time.

The KHEAA Help Desk can be reached at 800-818-2678 for problems logging into Zip Access.

NOTE: House Bill 480, passed by the 2009 Kentucky General Assembly, changed the priority in which funds may be used for the Teacher Scholarship program. After funding Teacher Scholarship requests from eligible prior-year recipients, KHEAA is required to direct funds from the scholarship program to provide student loan forgiveness to teachers who are eligible for the

Page 17: Beasiswa S2

"Best in Class" program administered by the Kentucky Higher Education Student Loan Corporation before awarding Teacher Scholarships to first-time applicants. KHEAA does not anticipate making Teacher Scholarship awards to new applicants for the 2012-2013 academic year.
