Be Your BestEmpowerment Workshop on Motivation and Goal Setting
Today’s Workshop
Recognize what motivates us and learn how we can motivate ourselves more
Learn and apply techniques to set achievable goals
Identify ways of dealing with stress using the 4As
Who am I and why do I do this?

1. Motivation: What is it and how does it work?
Think about something you do, What motivates you to do it?Are you a carrot or stick person? Do you move towards things that you want? Or away from things you want to avoid?
How does Motivation work?
• As human beings we tend to carry out tasks or behaviours based on EITHER gaining pleasure OR avoiding pain
• Think of 5 things that you are motivated by and write them down…..
• Now write down 5 things you have to do but don’t necessarily like doing but HAVE to do!....
Motivating Yourself • Now, that you know what
motivates you, can you apply these “gains” to the tasks you don’t necessarily like doing?
• To motivate yourself, think about what you are motivated by and apply it to any task…
Motivating Others…..
•How can I motivate my friend Marie, to get up at 5am to train with me?
•Find out what motivates them, remembering it may NOT be the same things that motivate you!
2. Goals and Goal- Setting
• If you didn’t place any limitations on yourself, what goals would you have?
So where to do you want to be? What do you want to have?
You have to know where you want to be or what you want to have, otherwise how will you know when you have achieved your goal?
Think of a Long Term Goal you want to have achieved in the next year, 5 years, 10 years etc…
Goal Setting: How it can go wrong!
Goal No 1
• I want to have my own business
Goal No 2
• I aim to have my own Life Coaching business set up in Dubai by October 2015, seeing at least 10 individual private clients a week
Goal Setting- Getting it right!• First of all make them SMART
• SPECIFIC- What exactly do you want?
• MILESTONES- Have you set your short term goals to help you?
• AS NOW- Write you goals in the present tense using the 3Ps (next slide)
• RESULTS- How will you know when you have been successful? What will you see? What will others see? How will you feel? How will you act?
• TIMING- When is all this going to be achieved by?
•Remember that a goal without a deadline is just a dream!

Creating your Road Map to achieving your goals
• 1. Mark in your long term goal
• 2. Mark in 2 short term goals (these should help you achieve your long term goal)
• 3. What challenges do you foresee along the way? Mark in how you will overcome them using resources available to you (remember that people, thoughts, habits, actions and behaviours are all resources- Be Resourceful!)
3. Beating Stress: Using the 4As
•1. Can you ADAPT to the stressor?
•2. Can you AVOID the stressor?
•3. Can you ALTER the stressor?
•4. Can you ACCEPT the stressor?
