Dear Readers of TAN As the excitement of the first week and a half settles down into the routine of school work, the halls seem a bit quieter. Now is the time to begin our studies, and prepare for the impending work load (I know I am already a bit behind). However the excite- ment shall rage on with upcoming events that students are eagerly awaiting, and the hopes for an equally exciting school year. Cain Sleep, Deputy Head Boy The Twizel Marae Visit By Kian Murphy, M1 On Tuesday morning Mum dropped me off at the marae. After Komene greeted Mr Feasey, he invited the school to come onto the marae. We sang a waiata (Aoraki ae), then Komene did another greeting in Maori and said we could go into the marae but we had to remove our shoes first. While we were in the marae Komene told us that a marae is a warm house where everybody is welcome to come and visit. We headed back to school after that to do some activity’s which included Maori music, haka and kiorahi. Ring Ring Ring….. That’s my alarm! Yay, we are going to the marae today. I can’t wait to see inside for the first time. After the welcome, Komene said “come on in”. We all said “wow, it looks cool in here!” “What did you like Caleb?” I asked. “The maori game we played. Kia Ora and Welcome to TAN A special welcome to the following new students:

Lily Burgess, who started her school days in Room 7 last week,

Keetra Lloyd (Y10), Meg Gibson (Y10), Isaac Kitto (Y8),

Kaitlyn (Y4) and Hannah (Y2) Allison, and Campion (Rm 5)

and Oliver (Y3) McShane. Also welcome back to Aurelia

Walsh (Y12), Stormy-Lee Wilson (Y7)and Carmen Ayers (Y4).

It has been a very active week since the last TAN:

Swimming: On a very hot Friday we had the Year 5-13 swim-

ming sports, and it was great to see such fantastic House partici-

pation and good competition in the pool. Meanwhile, as long as

the weather is fair, we are getting as much quality swimming

instruction in the pool as we can. Parents can support this by

making sure children have swimwear every day; the decision to

swim at a particular time can then be based on the actual pool

temperature and conditions at that time, and not be limited by

whether or not enough children have their gear. To help

improve swimming we have put extra staffing hours into

swimming instruction, as well as extra hours into reading and

mathematics for the first six weeks of term.

Te Ao Māori: On Monday afternoon the teachers went to Te

Whare Mahana to learn more about the Maori world, the tikanga

(way of doing things) and kawa (protocols), and discuss ways to

improve learning about these. Teachers learning rakau, waiata

and Haka continued well into the evening.

On Tuesday morning our school students were joined by those

from Tekapo School, and formally welcomed on the marae with

a whero, or challenge. Students then had a lesson inside the

Marae, taken by Komene, they then returned to school and the

Events Centre for the day’s activities. In rotation they learned a

new Haka, a new waiata, rakau or stick games and either how to

make and use poi, or play KI- o- rahi out on the fields. This was

all put together with a half hour performance in the Events

Centre in front of a good turn out of parents. We intend to build

our students knowledge in these areas, as part of what we be-

lieve a 21st century New Zealand citizen needs to know, and to

ensure our students experience the full range of learning re-

quired by the New Zealand Curriculum.

Learning like this is enhanced when more parents and members

of the community are involved, so if anybody else is interested

in supporting this, please let us know.

Coming Events:

Tomorrow: A small group of our Year 11-13 NetNZ students

are going to Roxburgh to meet other elearning students and

teachers. NetNZ is the new distance learning organisation

resulting from the amalgamation of Cantnet and Otago Net and

is the means by which we can deliver to Senior students thirty

extra

subjects, from Accounting and Agriculture, to Samoan.
