2016 HSPVA Creative Writing Middle School Workshop (See flyer

attached.) HSPVA will once again host the Middle School Creative Writing Workshop in 2016! This year’s event is scheduled for Saturday, November 19th, 9 am to 2 pm. The workshop has sold out every year that we’ve held it, which says a lot for the quality of the event and its importance to the Houston community. It’s a truly remarkable workshop, where over 200 Houston-area middle-schoolers spend half a day developing their budding writing talents under the coaching of our very own creative writing students – we think that’s one reason for its success!

Concepts

A special part of the cerebrum, the somatosensory cortex, receives input from the body surface.

Areas of the body that are important for the sense of touch have a large representation on the sensory cortex.

SCIENCE AND MATH SKILLS

Predicting, measuring, interpreting data and drawing conclusions

Activities

1) Students make a model of the somatosensory cortex that they can wear, and they investigate which parts of

the body correspond to the largest areas on the somatosensory cortex.

2) Work on science fair projects.

3) Review for Sensory Unit exam Nov. 14th and 15th .

Academic Practice: Continue to work on your science fair projects. ALWAYS refer to your daily agenda in

your neuroscience binders for assignment instructions and due dates.

Students will conquer, enhance, enrich, and extend their basic & required skills and knowledge in

mathematics by taking responsibility of their own learning with the aid of technology, peer mentoring

and small group instruction. Lab Hours: Computers and tutoring will be available Tue / Thu, 7:30-8:15 A.M. in room 129. No late arrivals allowed. Students will be picked up from side door at 7:30 and escorted to lab.

Two other labs are also available Thursday after school. Cycle Project: 55% of PIE (260 topics) completed, due Dec 16.

WEEKLY: STAAR Review Topics: Rates Coach Support 5A, B, C ALEKS (Continuous individualized topics on math program): Students have approximately one hour in class

Students will explore the theme of adversity through the reading of fiction. Students will continue to strengthen their comprehension skills and analyze how authors connect to their audiences and convey theme through narrative and stylistic elements. Students will make inferences about text and use textual evidence to support understanding. Students will recognize dialect and conversational voice (dialogue) and explain how authors use dialect to convey character. Students will explain the meaning of foreign words and phrases commonly used in written English (e.g. RSVP, que sera sera)
