Founded in 1969, Vancouver Academyof Music is the most established musicschool in the Lower Mainland. Located atVanier Park across from the Planetarium, the Academy has over 1000 students. A fullrange of classes is offered to students of allages and abilities, taught by highly trained, internationally recognized instructors.

“The practical impact of music is imme-diate,” says Joseph Elworthy, ExecutiveDirector Vancouver Academy of Music. “Itenhances communication, serves as a toolfor personal development and provides an

been a part of this history as kids them-selves. The Youngs encouraged a love of mu -sic and wanted their own children to share asimilar experience studying at this musicschool. “The quality of instruction and thededication of the instructors are inspiringfor the students as well as the parents,” saysGladys Young. “Events such as concerts, mas -ter classes, open houses, and guest artists arefantastic extra-curricular opportunities offer -ed by the school to support student learning.”

The Young boys, Joshua 13 years old isstudying cello and Shane 10 years old playsthe violin. Both boys participate in the jun-

awareness of community service and civicresponsibility. Research supporting the linkbetween music and academic achievementis considerable by demonstrating higher testscores in math, reading and writing regard-less of socio-economic status. What we seewith this data is heightened concentrationand memory as a result of musical study.Combined with the discipline of consistentpractice, all these factors easily translate tosuccess in the classroom.”

musical notation. Other types of teachingmethods include: Orff (music, movement, drama and speech, similar to a child’s worldof play) and Kodaly (syllables expressing mu -sical notes and rhythm exploration throughnatural movements). Instructors come withbackgrounds from respected institutionsincluding: UBC, Juilliard, Yale University, the Vancouver Symphony and the Vancou-ver Opera.

Some Program HighlightsBrain Boosters is an innovative Academyprogram for children aged three to thirteenyears that stimulates both hemispheres ofthe brain through music and math. Createdby certified instructor Lisa Amini, the pro-gram has been very well received by parentsand children. “Brain Boosters can work forchildren as young as 21/2 years to learn theuniversal languages of math and music,” saysLisa. “Equally, it works for children withspecial needs, including those who are chal-lenged by autism or are hearing-impaired,because these students can learn and showtheir understanding of math and musicnon-verbally. All students in this course learnto concentrate and focus, and also seem tohave a better appreciation of the world theylive in.”

Soundfest is a new summer programwhere students of all instruments can un -leash their inner Mozart with lessons, groupensemble and even an iPad orchestra at fourone-week camps from July 9 to August 3 forchildren aged four to eighteen years. This pro-gram includes cultural excursions with the

and personal growth. Our core teachingphilosophy lies in the cultivation of charac-ter and cognition in every student throughthe discipline acquired through the study ofmusic. Our students are engaged in the com -munity by bringing their musical talents tovenues such as care facilities, hospitals, charitable events and community gather-ings.” For example: talented brass studentsplayed at a Fundraiser for Canadian figureskater Patrick Chan this past February.

“As the Academy expands, we are look-ing to incorporate the diverse musical tradi-tions of Vancouver’s ethnic communities,”adds Joseph Elworthy. “We also believe thatmusic is best learned and enjoyed in agroup environment. Our faculty and staffplace great importance in providing a learn-ing environment that is encouraging andsupportive—a place where kids can diffusethe daily pressures of school and enjoy mak-ing music with friends.”

Types of Musical InstructionAcademy students are able to take lessonsalong diverse creative paths: piano, violin, cello, voice, music theory and more. Forover 43 years, the school has been a globalleader in the Suzuki method of music in -struction. This method places great impor-tance on the natural development of the earusing language acquisition theories, as wellas emphasizing the value of a shared learn-ing environment between parent and child.

The Traditional teaching style is also fol-lowed which involves students simultane-ously learning instrumental instruction and

Space Centre, Museum of Vancouver, Bardon the Beach, and the Maritime Museum—to “stimulate the senses, challenge the intel-lect, and spur musical proficiency.”

Starting in September, an expanded EarlyChildhood curriculum with classes for three-month old babies and up will be launched.A class for expectant mothers looking tobond with their baby and brush up on theirmusical knowledge is also being offered.“Many parents and grandparents takeadvantage of the Adult Learning program,”adds Joseph. “They can enjoy playing musicwith their children and perhaps rekindletheir own youthful passion for music.”

The Academy is not only for exceptional, musically gifted children aspiring to becomeprofessional musicians, but also is for any-one who has an interest in music. All levelsof creative talent are welcome. Registrationfor programs is quick and easy with the useof online registration on their website atwww.vam.ca.

An exciting period of stimulating growthand renewal is underway at this respectedmusical institution. “We are pursuing thepossibility of expansion within the LowerMainland,” adds Joseph, “as well as collabo-rative partnerships with international musicschools and satellite locations in Asia, alongwith continuing the important work pro-moting the value of music education in thiscommunity. The Academy aims to nurturea life-long appreciation of music and per-forming arts.”

What we see with this data is heightened

concentration and memoryas a result of musical study.

Combined with thediscipline of consistent

practice, all these factorseasily translate to success

in the classroom.

ADVERTORIAL

W hen young children have trouble learn-ing to read, sometimes it’s because they

can’t see well enough in class. Della Chow, a Vancouver optometrist, finds

this happens alarmingly often, so she urges par-ents to take their children for a complete eyeexam before kindergarten — ideally, at the ageof three.

Kids don’t need to know the alphabet to havetheir vision tested, she says.

If schoolchildren don’t see well, it ends upbecoming more than just being a reading prob-lem, says Chow, whose Kitsilano-based practiceis called Della Optique.

Children who see poorly or whose eyes gettired in class can easily become inattentive andthen badly behaved.

“Then they get their eyes checked and theyget glasses” and the problems go away.

“The parents feel so guilty!” The B.C. Association of Optometrists points

out that one in five children entering school hasa vision disorder and that 80 per cent of a child’slearning is based on vision.

Chow knows she’s right about children need-ing early eye exams because she herself didn’t getone.

Her vision wasn’t corrected until she was inGrade 3, and it turned out she needed a strongprescription for nearsightedness.

“I don’t know how I even got to Grade 3,”marvels Chow, a graduate of the University ofWaterloo’s doctor of optometry program whohas been in practice for 15 years.

Some kids have excellent distance vision, sotheir parents mistakenly think they’re fine when,in fact, they can’t focus on close work.

Chow believes so strongly in vision testing asa precondition for literacy that she has donated$5,000 to the Can-West Global Foundation’sRaise-a-Reader campaign. This makes her what’scalled a bronze sponsor.

With the provincial government matching allthe money donated in the campaign, her gener-ous contribution is doubled.

“I’m so excited that my $5,000 is turning into$10,000,” says Chow, who is encouraging otheroptometrists to donate.

Altruistic eye doctor seeswhat happenswhen kids’ visiondoesn’t get tested
