Boroondara Cares
The Bulletin
Past District Governor
Dennis Shore
Chairman,
Boroondara Cares
Rotary has sometimes been criticised
for being too structured and by
inference making one size fit all.
Boroondara Cares demonstrates
effectively that this is not the case.
The Manual of Procedure, which guides Rotary
and Rotary Clubs, provides far more latitude than
many Rotarians think to enable the great work of
Rotary to be done in the way that best suits its
local community.
Boroondara Cares was born from the desire of
one Rotary community to help another. That
mission to help the people of Moira Shire
demonstrated that when Rotarians harness their
individual passions with others for a common
cause the impossible becomes possible. Polio
eradication is perhaps the most significant
demonstration of what can be achieved but what
we see being achieved through Boroondara
Cares is no less impressive at the local level.
We are at the start of a new chapter in
Boroondara Cares as we approach the date for
the transition of Foundation Boroondara to the
Boroondara Cares Foundation. Like all things in
life we need to adapt and evolve. Boroondara
Cares will also inevitably evolve and must evolve
to continue to be relevant, not only for Rotarians
but for the community at large.
For any activity to be successful it needs the
commitment and contribution of its participants;
Boroondara Cares is no different. To date we
have had great enthusiasm, support and action.
The future will be determined by those who
continue to support Boroondara Cares and I
encourage your ideas and suggestions as to how
we go forward “for the good of Boroondara”.

7.00 to 9.30 PM
(See Page 3)
Fiy Rotarians and partners gathered in Cobram for the “Back to Moira Shire”
event on the 11th and 12th October organised by the Rotary Club of Glenferrie.
Nine Rotary Clubs were represented from Boroondara and Moira Shire.
The team shared visits to “The Big
Strawberry”, Boosey Cheese, the Rich
Glen Olive Farm and an a"ernoon tea
cruise on the Murray followed by a semi
-formal dinner at the Beach Café on the
beau(ful Thompsons Beach on the
Murray. PP Gary Cleveland of the
Rotary Club of Cobram welcomed the
Boroondara team and reflected upon
what several Rotarians observed to be
”the best Rotary program in their #me in
Rotary” – the shared drought relief
journey of Boroondara Cares and Moira
Cares.
PDG Don Jago announced a pleasant surprise and a highlight of the weekend
when he called upon the organiser of the outstanding weekend, Rob Hogan of the
Rotary Club of Glenferrie to be recognised (again) as a Paul Harris Fellow for his
services to the Boroondara Cares program, to his club and to the works of Rotary.
An idyllic Sunday alfresco luncheon at Rich Glen Olive Farm provided a perfect
closure to a most successful weekend and the refreshment of many valued Rotary
friendships.

It would be a hard heart that would
not be moved by the on-going story
and commitment of Servants
Community Housing as expounded by
Servants CEO Ma/ Maudlin.
Mat, a regular at Boroondara Cares
mee(ngs, was our guest speaker for the
October Boroondara Cares mee(ng.
His purpose “this (me” was to tell us
about the upcoming launch of
Narra0ve, the Servants’ second major
publishing ini(a(ve and to invite us to
swell the audience at the launch to be
held on Friday 31st October, 7—9.30
PM in the Great Hall of Xavier College
in Barkers Road Kew.
“Anthology” was the first major
Servants publica(on. Copies are found
on the shelves of Rotarians and many
many others throughout Melbourne
and beyond. It tells the stories of
residents of Servants’ residen(al
facili(es , seen through the eyes of (and
wri7en by) senior students of Scotch
College.
Narra0ve follows a similar publishing
formula. Once again the major authors
are students from local schools who
have engaged with residents to
understand and sensi(vely
communicate their stories.
Ma7 reflected upon the Servants
valuable associa(on with the Rotary
Clubs of Boroondara and the
importance of our shared opportunity
for service to the homeless and under-
housed members of our community.
Many of us— especially the Rotarians
of Boroondara -have been pleased to
accept the opportunity for service
offered by this selfless organisa(on.
May we look forward to seeing you at
the Xavier launch on Friday 31st
October?
