OVER 100 AGRICULTURAL CROP SPECIES IN NORTH AMERICA
NEED A POLLINATOR TO BE MOST PRODUCTIVE.
IN THE PAST, NATIVE BEES AND FERAL HONEY BEES COULD MEET THE POLLINATION NEEDS OF
ORCHARDS, MELON AND PUMPKIN FIELDS, SEED PRODUCERS, AND BERRY PATCHES BECAUSE
THESE FARMS WERE TYPICALLY ADJACENT TO AREAS OR HABITAT THAT HARBORED IMPORTANT
POLLINATORS.
TODAY, FARMS IN THE U.S. ARE LARGER AND HAVE LESS ADJACENT HABITAT TO SUPPORT BEES.
YET, THE NEED FOR POLLINATORS IN AGRICULTURAL LANDSCAPES HAS NEVER BEEN GREATER.
ACROSS THE GLOBE, THE ACREAGE OF INSECT POLLINATED CROPS HAS MORE THAN DOUBLED IN
THE PAST 50 YEARS.
AT THE SAME TIME, COMMERCIAL BEEKEEPERS IN THE U.S. ARE LOSING AN UNSUSTAINABLE
PERCENTAGE OF THEIR HIVES OF HONEY BEES EACH YEAR BECAUSE OF A COMBINATION OF
HABITAT LOSS, DISEASES AND PEST, AND PESTICIDE EXPOSURE. NATIVE BEE ABUNDANCE AND
DIVERSITY IS CHALLENGED AS WELL. ALMOST 25 PERCENT OF BUMBLE BEES ARE FACING DRA-
MATIC POPULATOIN DECLINES, AND THE ABUNDANCE AND DIVERSITY OF NATIVE BEES IS LOWER
IN HEAVILY DEVELOPED LANDSCAPES. ONGOING RESEARCH DEMONSTRATES, HOWEVER, THAT
THESE NATIVE BEES PLAY A VITAL ROLE IN CROP POLLINATION, AND THAT THEIR NUMBERS CAN
BE INCREASED.
PRIVATE LANDOWNERS CAN DO A LOT TO HELP SUPPORT THESE CRITICAL POLLINATORS BY
PROVIDING HABITAT AND FLOWERING PLANTS THAT PROVIDE FOOD FOR POLLINATORS.
FURTHERMORE, FOR PRODUCERS OF INSECT POLLINATED CROPS, POLLINATOR HABITAT AND
FLORAL DIVERSITY ON THE FARM CAN ALSO PAY DIVIDENDS BY IMPROVING CROP POLLINATION
AND REDUCING PEST POPULATIONS, WHILE ALSO SUPPORTING OTHER TYPES OF PRODUCTION
AND NATURAL RESOURCE CONSERVATION GOALS. IF YOU ARE INTERESTED IN LEARNING MORE, I
HAVE A BROCHURE THAT IS FREE TO THE PUBLIC. JUST COME TO OUR OFFICE & PICK ONE UP!

Summer is here and most of us are finishing up spraying and getting busy in the hay. In the southern part of Baxter county, my 319 Hicks Creek project has farmers busy working on their farms and improving water and soil quality. If you haven’t heard yet, I have a special project working with landowners surrounding Hicks Creek, Perry Creek, Farris Creek, Sneeds Creek, Moccasin Creek, and Sugarloaf Creek. If your farm is located is these areas of the county, I have cost share programs to help build cross fences, install water pipeline and add watering facilities, help with brush control, and do re-seeding on those pastures that have been overgrazed or loss ground cover due to drought or poor soil conditions. These best management practices are a beneficial way to increase production on your farm and help improve the water quality for your family and everyone in our com-munity and beyond. The district has 2 no-till drills and 2 sprayers for rent to help you on your farm. Now is a great time to plan ahead for reseeding or planting win-ter annuals this fall. Getting a soil test is the best way to make sure your grass has exactly what it needs to be the most productive for your livestock.
This special project requires very little paperwork and is much quicker than most of our government programs. If you think you might be located in this area, you can come by our office at 406 W. Wade ave. or give me a call at 425-3527 ext. 3. if your farm is not in this water-shed, go ahead and come by and check out all the other programs and services we have to offer.
