The Federation of Ikastolas (Basque-medium schools) has been running amultilingual Project since 1991. The main aim is to educate and prepare studentsas future citizens of our multilingual and multicultural Europe. The English project has the following characteristics:

• An early start to learning English (at the age of 3).• The development of coherent and structured teaching materials (from the ages of 3 to 16).

• The use of a constructivist approach whereby language is learnt by sharing meaningful experiences with others (dramatised stories, task based-learning, project work and CLIL).

• An emphasis on teacher-training and development.
