defense. This twoway play was perhaps the key turning point in thegame. Heads in the home team began to drop as they went into thehalftime break down by 9, feeling the game should have been closer.

With the end of the previous quarter fresh in their minds, Surreyplayed with great confidence in the 3rd quarter, dialed in fromdistance they knocked down 3 threepointers, making a Sussexdefense that was slow to react to ball movement pay dearly. The hometeam’s play also seemed to be influenced by the conclusion to the firsthalf, still experiencing difficulties to score open shots, whie missing theenergy and onball creativeness of point guard Pauls Ilznis, who had tosit out a large portion of the period due to foul trouble. The thirdquarter was the home team’s least productive, scoring only 13 pointswhilst allowing 21 to be scored against them. In hindsight, had theykept the third quarter score tighter, their late comeback attempt mayhave been successful.

After conceding two quick threepoint shots to begin the final quarterof play, Sussex called a timeout, trailing by 20 points. During thestoppage, players regained their composure and, energized by eachother and the coach, committed to making a final push for victory.Sticking true to their word, the home team scored 12 unansweredpoints following the timeout, including 5 points apiece from Folarinand A. Rosberg. However, this would prove to be the closest Sussexwould get to reaching the visiting team, who managed to ride out thestorm and remain on top mainly through strong freethrow shootinglate in the game. Notwithstanding the fact that Sussex won the battleof the fourth quarter, Surrey went home with a deserved 7562 win.

Despite not getting off to the best of starts, the Sussex team had apositive outlook on the rest of the season, believing that the mainthing holding them back currently is the ability to make shots undergamesituations, an ability that will certainly develop over the courseof the year. As a team they are relieved that their performance wasconstrained by something that is relatively easy to work on, asopposed to an underlying issue relating to team chemistry or lack oftalent.
