Pastor’s Corner Dear Friends, This weekend, Catholic Christians celebrate the 21st Sunday in Ordinary Time.

On this day, we Jesus reminds us that in the Kingdom of God, some who are last in this world will be first, and many who are first will be last (Luke 13: 22-30). This Thursday, August 25th, students of St. Mary Catholic School will be returning to school. Welcome back one and all! And a special welcome goes to all the students who are coming to our school for the first time! May God the Spirit guide you in your studies, and inspire you to grow and flourish in your spiritual lives! The National Catholic Reporter has recently published some stories from some of my journals. The link to view them online is: https://www.ncronline.org/blogs/ncr-today/days-life-pastor. Finally, I have copies of the new edition of Visions 2017 Vocation Guide. If you are interested in exploring a vocation to the priesthood, Religious Life, or diaconate, please let me know so I can give you a copy of Visions. Sincerely yours in Christ, - Father Bob

We want to invite them to take another look at the Church of today, to begin a return to full participation in the Sacraments, or even just to come and sit before the Lord with us at the Basilica. If you would like to have a Come Home Prayer Bookmark, you are welcome to have one. Please pick them up in the Church en-trance, instead of from the red Hymnals.

Carolina Catholic for August For our second August show, we once again interview Father Donald Calloway, a convert to the Catholic and a member of the Congregation of Marian Fathers of the Immaculate Conception. Before his conversion to Catholicism, he was a high school dropout who had been kicked out of a foreign country, institutionalized twice, and thrown in jail multiple times. After his radical conversion, he earned a B.A. in Philosophy and Theolo-gy from the Franciscan University of Steubenville, M.Div. and S.T.B. degrees from the Dominican House of Studies in Washington, DC, and an S.T.L. in Mariology from the International Marian Research Institute in Dayton, Ohio. In this book, Fr. Calloway has written what is one of the most comprehensive books ever written on the Rosary. He deftly negotiates the complexities of the story of the Rosary over many centu-ries, weaving the historical, theological, and devotional strands into a veritable masterpiece of scholarship and piety. This book should turn every one of its readers into a champion of the rosary. This beautiful show on the Holy Rosary will air on Saturday, August 27th, at 11 a.m. and Sunday, August 21st and 28th, at 6 p.m. Wilmington Catholic Radio can be found on stations 91.7 FM, 93.1FM, and 103.1 or on our website at wilmingtoncatholicradio.com.

Make straight paths for your feet, that what is lame may not be disjointed but healed.” All the 160 + volunteers are about healing ourselves and our brothers and sisters. Many times this means relieving incredible stress that financial worry places upon people. This past year we helped in the following areas: $64,600 - Rental Assistance $34,584 - Electricity $18,786 - Water and sewage $16,000 - Gasoline; car needs $14,800 - Food $12,147 - Hygiene Purchases $10,914 - Transportation: local and out of town $ 3,999 - Office Supplies paid from Parish Stipend $ 1,840 - Heat; Gas $ 1,685 - Educational Assistance $ 1,000 - Phones and phone bills Small children’s quilts are regularly donated by Linus Quilters,

“Made with Love” – Karen Smith’s group and Quilters by the Sea.

As volunteers, we try to listen hard to what our guests share with us. Often times what is needed is a listening “ear” and a comforting word of encouragement as well as food, hygiene products, household items, furniture, funds, etc. Also today’s Gospel messages reminds us that “some are last who will be first, and some are first who will be last”.

Sister Isaac—Office of Social Ministry

Special Need for the Week: If you have items to donate please hold them until after Labor Day, or share them with one of the many Agencies in the area. We make a special plea not to leave items in the stairwell since no one is here to process them and they generally end up in the dumpster since people passing by sort through them. This does make extra work for the staff. Come September, we will be in need of volunteers to pick up food on the third Tuesday of the Month at Food Lion in Masonboro Com-mons. It is a hard job since coolers containing the food have to be carried down our stairs to the Food area in the Ministry. A large car, van or truck is needed to hold the coolers and two people doing it really helps. The commitment takes about two hours, once a month. If you are able to volunteer for this ministry, please call the Office at 762-5491 x135.

RCIA The 2016-2017 RCIA process begins in several weeks. Contact John Walsh at the Parish Office (762-5491 x114) or Maryann at [email protected] or Beverly at [email protected] for additional information.

To get more information and to sign up please go to the following website: www.kofc1074.org/golf. The cost is $85 per person including golf, carts and the banquet meal or $20 per person for the ban-quet meal only. We are also looking for donations and sponsors, so if you can help or have questions please contact SK Lou Mattes (910-200-8928 or [email protected]) or Bob Macaluso (910- 371-1608 or [email protected]). Principal Joyce M. Price

"Let your light so shine..." Matthew 5:16

Until school starts, our August office hours will be Monday—Friday, 9-3. We will definitely be extending our PreK Pro-gram to a full day option. Mrs. Gratwick will be managing the after-noon portion of the program. New Admissions and Kindergarten Students - Please make certain that all immunization and health records are in the office prior to the be-ginning of school. Seventh Grade - Effective July 1, 2015, a booster dose of Tdap is needed for individuals who have not previously received it and are entering 7th grade, or by 12 years of age, which ever comes first. Meningococcal Conjugate Vaccine - One dose for individuals is need-ed if entering 7th grade or by 12 years of age, whichever comes first. New School App Ready to Test - St. Mary School App from Appy City now available at App Store or Google Play. Let us know what you think! Want to get your $400 Annual Fee refunded? It's simple - just refer a registering family for the 2016/2017 school year! Remember, they must register and pay tuition for the 2016/2017 school year - and - let Mrs. Linn know that you are the referring fami-ly!

St. Mary School Athletics To our new families coming to St. Mary, I am Tony Viollis, athletic director for our school. Our league teams are open to our 6th-8th grade students except for Cross Country. Our Cross Country team includes students from 4th-8th grade. In the fall we have a girls' volleyball team and we hope to have a girls' tennis team as well as a coed cross country team. If your child is interested in participating on any of these teams and you do not have the coach's contact information, please get in touch with me and I will pass your information along to the appropriate coach. ([email protected]). REQUIRED ATHLETIC FORMS: All student athletes must have completed the required 3 forms before they may participate in practices or matches. These 3 forms (Physical, Travel Slip, and Permission Slip) can be downloaded from my athletics web page. The 4th required form (Participation) is not due until uni-forms are handed out to the players. If your child participates on a non- offici-ated sport (tennis, cross country or cheerleading), you will be required to pay a $25.00 fee. If your child plays on a team that requires an official (volleyball or basketball), you will be required to pay a $35.00 fee. If your child plays 2 sports during the school year, you will only pay a total of $50.00. If you have any questions, feel free to contact me. PARENTS OF ATHLETES: This year you will be REQUIRED to work at least one HOME contest for volleyball or girls' or boys' basketball contests. Last year I had a small number of different parents helping out. We had the same 6-7 parents all the time. This cannot be repeated. I will be making a fall, then a winter Sign up Genius so all parents of the fall and winter will be able to log on and sign up to work. I will be emailing them to you when I get your e mail addresses from your coach. Volleyball games start at 4, but you will need to be there after school to get ready for what you signed up to do. We need your help at admissions (door), scorer's table, concession stand, or by being a line judge. Volleyball matches will end about 5:30 unless we have 2 matches back to back. We all need to step forward and help make our team's games run smoothly. By each family doing their service time, each parent should be able to enjoy their own child's game. BOOSTER : I need help this year to keep our Athletic Booster Club active and successful. This can only happen with parent volunteers. The service that our parents have provided in the past has resulted in great fundraisers (5K Luv2Run and SMS Golf Classic) which brought in so much money for im-provements to our facility and our program, all to benefit our students. Please consider joining the Booster Club! PROPER USE OF OUR NEW GYM FLOOR: Street shoes are not permitted on the gym floor. Students must wear tennis shoes to participate in gym clas-ses. No food, drinks, or gum are permitted on the gym floor at any time. Following these rules will help to maintain our beautiful new gym floor for decades to come.

Summer Fun 2016 The Streeper family has been exploring Charleston, SC - tak-ing in lots of activities as you'll see in the pics! Their fun includ-ed visiting with dad who is the First Of-ficer on the USNS Spearhead whose pri-mary mission is expe-ditionary fast transport. They transport navy seals, marines and other military forces. They are getting ready for a deployment. Mrs. Streeper used to work for military sealift command as well. The ship that you see in the

picture behind her is the USNS (United States Naval Ship) Supply. It transferred ammunition, bombs, torpedoes to military ships and was assigned to a battle group while out to sea. Be sure to ask them about their trip when we get back to school!
