Basic aim of preparing this resentation was to update all employees mainly operators who are practically involved in engine operations on site or while mobilising the cranes ,also covering reasons, why the engine of LTM 1140 crane seized while being mobilize from Delhi to Rajasthan in the month of Mar

ENGINES:-

This is a typical Mercedez Benz engine fitted on maximum no of cranes

Basic Information on an engine

Page 4: BASIC ENGINE KNOWLEDGE- LEVEL 1

While the crane was being mobilized from Delhi and had just completed 100 kms of running, the high engine water temp indication showed maximum, and engine seized.

Following can be the reasons for high cooling water temperature:-

1. Overheating of cooling water.2. Less water in cooling tank/Radiator.3. Radiator fan not working.4. No coolant in water.5. Thermostat malfunction.

6. Cooling water pump not working.

Now it can be seen from the working model, how much of heat will be created due to friction all around the engine and especially around wall of the piston and surrounding areas. The Nos.1,2,3,4 are indicating suction, compression, power and exhaust strokes.

Page 7: BASIC ENGINE KNOWLEDGE- LEVEL 1

If this heat is not removed on continuous basis it can damage

following…..

PISTON

LINNER(In which piston moves up and down and

shown in red is the crankshaft which holds pistons with the help of connecting rods)

Page 9: BASIC ENGINE KNOWLEDGE- LEVEL 1

In this case both piston and cylinder are damaged

After the engine was opened in workshop it was noticed that the water cavities were also rusted because there was no coolant in water, photos are shown in next slide marked with red circle…

Importance of coolant in cooling water:-

1. It has additives in it which does not allow the corrosion to take place.2. It has a property of keeping the cooling water temp low by few degrees than normal water.

Page 14: BASIC ENGINE KNOWLEDGE- LEVEL 1

DAILY CHECKS ON AN ENGINE:-

1. Check radiator water filling cover should be tight.2. Check water level in radiator ,It should be full.3. Check color of water for coolant/additives.4. Check water should not be dirty.5. Check engine oil level on dip stick.6. Check engine visually for any leaks of water,fuel,oil.7. Check tightness of all belts.8. Hand turn the engine for checking the free ness.

Page 15: BASIC ENGINE KNOWLEDGE- LEVEL 1

9. Check water level in battery.10. Check oil level in reservoir.11. Check tyre pressure.12. Check condition of all hoses.13. Start the engine and then check for any leaks. 14. Check color of the exhaust it should not be black or white,it should be color less.

NORMAL RUNNING PARAMETERS OF AN ENGINE:-

1. Fresh water temperature: 40 to 80 degree centigrade2. Lub oil temperature 40 to 80 degree centigrade3. Lub oil pressure 2 to 4 kg

Maximum Alarming Temperatures:-

1. Fresh water temperature: 90 degree centigrade2. Lub oil temperature 95 degree centigrade3. Lub oil pressure 2 kg Minimum
