Dr. F.M. Powell succumbs at age 70

Dr. Frank Marion Powell, 86 of 505 E. Guilford St., a ba'ptist minister for 70 years, died at 2 p. rn, Monday at Community General Hospital following a lengthy illness. Funeral will be conducted

Wednesday at 2:30 p. m. at First Baptist Church on Ran­ dolph Street by Dr. Joseph P. Hester and Rev. Woodrow Hill. Burial will be in Holly Hills Cemetery. Dr. Powell was born in New

Bloomfield, Mo. to James and Melinda Powell. Dr. Powell received his A. B.

and M. A. in 1912 at William Jewel Academy in Liberty, Mo., where he was an inter­ collegiate debater and a. member of Phi Gamma Delta Fraternity. He attended Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, receiving a Th. M. in 1961 and a Th. D. in 1917. He did further graduate work at the University of Cincinnati and the University of Chicago. Dr. Powell served as

professor of homiletics and church history at Southern Baptist Theological Seminary from 1918-41 and also studied at .Oxford University in England, during a sabbatical leave from the seminary in 1923-24. He was professor of church history and homiletics at Golden Gate Seminary, Berkeley, Calif., from 1949-52. In 1913 Dr. Powell married

the former Kathleen Stone, who survives of the home. Other survivors include son

Robert S. Powell of 202 Stone St.: daughter Mrs. Harry G. Reid Jr. of Miami, Fla.; and 11 grandchildren and five great­ grandchildren. The body will remain at

Siler Funeral Home until 30 minutes before the funeral ser­ vice. Honorary pallbearers for the service will be the members of the Berean Class of the First Baptist Church Sunday school and the Thomasville Ministerial Association. The family will be at Siler

Funeral Home tonight from 7 to 9 o'clock. All memorials should be

directed to the building fund of Fir.st Baptist Church.

p.m. Wednesday at the First Baptist Church. Burial will be in Holly Hills Cemetery. Dr. Powell was born in New

Bloomfield, Mo., to James 'and Melinda Powell. He received his A.B. and M.A. degrees from William Jewel Academy in Liberty, Mo. Dr. Powell received his Th.M.

degree in 1916 from Southern Baptist Theological Seminary and his ThD. degree from the seminary in 1917. He also did further studies at the University of Cincinnati and the University of Chicago. From 191& to 1941, he served
