Bend summer fesTival 2013 / 3
Welcome! This festival is a place where the tellers of stories, the creators of beauty, and the ghosts of Bend's Downtown past, all cavort with the
pioneers of modern day, Downtown Bend, to craft a rich tapestry of color; to simmer a brilliant, tantalizing, artful, stew. And what makes a truly, great, summer festival
slog? The artisans, music-makers, chefs, and brewmasters; the minstrels, and patrons, the vintners and crafters. And how do we convey the textures of this all in a way that honors both it's complexity and transparency?
For answers to this, we turned to an artist (of course)... In the fall of 1996, one of Bend's loveliest, Jenny Green, introduced us to a fine artist named John Hillmer. At the time, John was a recent transplant from Seattle where he had worked on illustration and marketing campaigns for the esteemed Earshot Jazz Festival. He loved the urban feel of Downtown Bend. He loved great jazz. He was full of crazy wisdom. We were well aligned! Our friendship and partnership led to one inspiring piece of art after another, announcing to Bend, that it was time to celebrate! It was a prolific collaboration~ one that would time and time again, find the best in Bend, integrating an iconic fish, and beauty of all other sorts-- fine musicians, fine flora, and other whimsical characters, symbolic of the many interesting folks that have dotted our Bend landscape.
For more than a decade we worked with John to usher in the event season. And then, the conspiracy of impermanence set it. As with so many other
changes to our Bend, landscape, sadly, John moved on.
In Mexico, John found more stories to tell; another muse for his journey. But not before he had left behind a painted legacy of modern and abstract art, that
surely transformed the visual experience of Bend. We remember John, at his best, paintbrush in hand, using metaphor, charm, and wit, to tell the story of our beautiful
town. Nothing is literal for John. His vibrant, courageous use of color, is not without it's share of emotional depth. At once his visual stories explore both joy and lament. And what if John's fish could speak of the past 23 years of this amazing Downtown Bend and it's signature Festival? What would it say?
In John's world, it would glub, glub, glub on and on about pets marching down Wall Street, bicycle races, Jimmy Messina's defiance for Bend's sound curfew; about jugglers, and
men on street corners shouting out scripture. It would pause and remember mt. bachelor c o o k i e s , lovingly sculpted by a man named Hans. He was there when Robert Cray showed up, without a stage, just the day before. As if it was yesterday, he can see the many, exhausted, beautiful, young men and women, sweeping late and finally early into the nextday's morning, eyes closed, legs barely moving. Wistfully, the
fish would recall great pizza and laughter, Stuft into the rafters. He'd picture a glass of fine wine, or dessert, or acup of tea at former film house, once re-dubbed, Paradisio. And while the fish would explain his
particular attachment to Peggy's exquisite Italian, he'd shy away from remembering the hook and the Oar House and his narrow escape!
He'd recall Bend's finest artists, painting chairs and tables and busses and murals. It's all there, along with the new... If he were to return, he'd say now that he loves the fusion of overhead water,
reminding him of his hometown stream. The Fish, is particularly grateful for 25 years of mirror pond ("pale ale" that is), and in reverence to other fine foods and shops and boutiques, he'd glub out a hearty,
"Ola!" He's collected them all, that hand painted fish.
The times and the people, the comings and goings and comings again. Today, we are beyond pleased, that the fish makes a reprieve himself. In this the 23rd year of the Bank of the Cascades Bend Summer Festival, fine artist John Hillmer is back! (part time bend, resident, John Hillmer) John's impression on this festival is as deep as his fish's ocean. Every "trumpet duder" you see, on every street pole banner and every front of stage scrim; every daring scratched out image covering the once blank confines of our festival fine art posters, guide covers, and t-shirts; it's all John Hillmer. For us, it's the most iconographic way of saying "Bend Summer Festival!" So, enjoy the festival! Please support our many sponsors (especially, the most critical, Bank of the Cascades-- now in their 17th year of patronizing this festival).
Honor Downtown Bend's brilliant history! And, this week-end, go make some of your own history, when you live it, taste it, chew it, hear it, drink it, view it, (do it), ok? It's the 2013, Bank of the Cascades Bend Summer Festival, Presented by the Source Weekly, and it's your very own, hometown fiesta (right John?).
Sincerely, Cameron Clark Owner, C3 Events

Quetzal Guerrero 5pm
Through the years, Quetzal's profi-ciency in violin, guitar, percussion, and vocals has allowed him to grow into one of the more prominent artists in the Latin Soul music scene. His touring and performing has led to collaborations and performances with a long string of iconic musicians and performers.
Yogoman Burning Band 6:30pm
Yogoman hails from the planet Yog, where its inhabitants create ridiculous, quirky, and uninhibited dance moves on the regular- lighting up crowds of all-ages and taking it to the streets with their infectious and engaging ska/soul brass band style.
Jelly Bread 8pmJelly Bread, emerging out of Reno,
NV, is a tour de force of full frontal funk, thoroughly steeped in a Rock-Americana style, with a dash of rollicking indie alt-rock radio appeal. The band melds elements of a high desert twang and Oakland funk & rock through musical alchemy to produce a chameleonic playl-ist, dubbed as “moonshine funk & heavy soul”.

OzomatliIn their eighteen years together as a
band, celebrated Los Angeles culture-mashers Ozomatli have gone from
hometown heroes to being named U.S. State Department Cultural Ambassadors.
Ozomatli has always juggled two key identi-ties: they are the voice of their city and they
are citizens of the world. Their music – a noto-rious urban-Latino-and-beyond collision of hip
hop and salsa, dancehall and cumbia, samba and funk, merengue and comparsa, East LAR&B and New
Orleans second line, Jamaican ragga and Indian raga – has long followed a key mantra: it will take you around the
world by taking you around L.A.
They are the voice of their city and they are citizens of the world.

World’s Finest 1pmBlending ska, bluegrass, dub, punk
and everything in between, this 5 piece Portland band has created a genre all their own, and has been steadily filling up dance floors and packing venues wherever they go.
Giraffe Dodgers 3pm
The Giraffe Dodgers came together with the goal to progress the acoustic music we all know and love into a hybrid of bluegrass, funk, jazz and folk.
Jeff Crosby and the Refugees 5:30pm
He began playing guitar with the local folks on the back porches of Donnelly, ID, and by the following year, he had played it so much that he had worn the frets off. You can still hear those 'back porch' influences in his country infused rock music today.
Polyrhythmics 7:30pm
The 8 members of this dynam-ic world-beat orchestra, weave a clever web of deep, hypnotic grooves, creative, yet melodic interplay, clever horn-hooks, and searing solos that ignite every dance-floor that has laid before them.

After a visit to the prestigious, Bill Cosby hosted, Playboy Jazz Festival at the Hollywood Bowl in Southern, California, C3 Events owner Cameron Clark, and Saxon's Fine Jewelers owner Ron Hender-son, hatched a scheme to re-create an experience they had been moved by at the nearby House of Blues... together they were inspired, lifted up even, by the spiritual sounds of a Gospel R&B funk band, completed with gourmet champagne brunch. This nearly 10-year tradition now, has featured the best in national and regional gospel acts, in-cluding Seattle's award winning, "Total Experience Gospel Choir." Others who have performed include Janice Scrog-gins and Linda Hornbuckle, the African Gospel Accapella Group, Sonos, the Witherspoons, Max Clark, The Brown Sisters, Marilyn Keller, The Rose City Gospel Ensemble, Ruthie Foster and many more...
It is much more than good food--a delicious, gourmet meal prepared by Barrio--it is a celebration of an art form, an opportunity to be moved to a
better place! Join us again this year as we are thrilled to present MRB- The Max Ribner Band. Two other spectacu-lar gospel acts are presented by Saxon's Fine Jewelers including the Gospel Choir of the Cascades at 11am, and the Northwest Community Gospel Choir at 1pm. It all happens from 11am-3pm on The Peak 104.1 Mainstage on Oregon Avenue.
Tickets for the brunch with reserved seating are available at Saxon's Fine Jewelers in advance, or may be pur-chased by walking up at the event.

MRB3pm“Deeply rooted in peace, compassion and
healing, the band's message and music is full of inspiration and passion.”
The core of MRB (formerly the Max Rib-ner Band) came together in 2009, when Berklee
College of Music graduate Max arrived in Port-land, drawn by its arts scene and natural beauty. He
quickly found himself at the center of a vibrant funk/jazz scene, and built a solid reputation as a top-notch
flugelhorn player and musician, aided by performances with local heavyweights Esperanza Spalding, Medicine For
the People, and Patrick Lamb to name a few. He also began forming the musical collective that would one day become
MRB, pulling together musicians from all corners of the city: vocalists Matthew Flowers (Shy Girls), Saeeda Wright, and Ashley
Seamster, bassist Michael Dougherty, guitarist/producer Joe Hall, singer/songwriter Chris Lay, and Max's own virtuoso brother on piano/
keyboards, Tim Ribner. Beginning in small clubs and street fairs, the band was soon whipping crowds into a frenzy with hypnotic grooves and virtuostic
performances. These days MRB is a family affair, with contributions from a wide range of performers in the NW music scene – their live shows have featured appear-
ances by Bibi McGill (Beyoncè) and Liv Warfield (Prince).

Dan has always loved wildlife, and is unique in that his sub-jects are 100% wild (no captive or "staged" shots.) Capturing behavior and the inclusion of habitat also helps to define his style.
“It's the drama in nature that inspires me. In the wild, every day is a struggle, just to sur-vive. This is the story I want my photography to tell. I also hope my work serves to remind us that we don't own this earth, we share it.”
Since 2004, Elster photogra-phy has made annual donations to wildlife conservation. Every year, the amount has grown - a trend that Dan hopes to contin-ue the rest of his career!
Please visit Dan’s website www.elsterphotography.com for more information, and be sure to check out his booth at SummerFest.

“We are proud to continue our support of the Bend Summer Festival, as a signature event for Central Or-egon.” said Julie Miller, Oregon Regional President for Bank of the Cascades. “Over the past year our bank-ers have been working closely with local businesses and neighbors to help reinvigorate the local economy through business and home loans. Summer Festival is a perfect way to celebrate the returning vitality of our community.” Bank of the Cascades’ sponsorship of the Bend Summer Festival reaches beyond finan-cial support to include active participation from the Bank’s team members and their families. Employ-ees from across the company volunteer their time to help make this event successful! “Nothing is more rewarding than seeing so many families in our com-munity enjoying the Bend Summer festival, that’s what community banking is all about!” said Miller.
