Market Report up until November 2012Exchange Rates

• Against the $, sterling opened the month at 1.59 and is at 1.603 as of 12th Sept.• Against the €, sterling opened the month at 1.26 and ended at 1.241 as of 12th Sept.

Crude Oil and Fuel

A higher than expected rise in the US crude oil inventories and concerns over the rate of future demand growth weighed on crude oil prices in September. Prices were down on ICE London by 3% and light sweet crude on NYMEX in the US -5%. Road fuel prices were mixed as diesel prices fell in both the EU by 1%, whereas prices for petrol rose in the EU by 5%.

Fats and Oil

Palm oil – was weighed down by ample global supplies, weak demand and a good production outlook for 2012/13, falling in Rotterdam by 7% and in Malaysia by 7%. Soyabean oil – also fell as good weather helped the US harvest to progress at a good pace. As of 30th September 2012, around 41% of US soya beans had been harvested compared to an average of 19% by this date over the last 5 years. Prices were down on CBOT by 9% in the US and in Rotterdam by 7%. Rapeseed oil – fell by 4% and sunflower oil by 1%.

In Spain, lampante virgin olive oil futures continued to rise by 10% as global production is expected to decline 18% year-on-year in 2012/13.

Wheat

Maize futures fell back from the highs reached previously on CBOT by 11% as the US harvest has progressed quickly and demand has fallen from the ethanol industry. As of 30th September 2012, 54% of the harvest was completed in the 18 main producing states as opposed to 18% at this time last year. Milling wheat futures were down on CBOT 4% and LIFFE Paris by 2%.

Dairy

Spot fresh milk prices in the EU rose by 5% on average, and EU milk deliveries have continued to drop seasonally in September. UK daily production figures for the first two weeks of September averaged 33.4m litres a day, down 3.6% compared to this period last year. Butter prices have shown significant increases across the EU, rising in the UK by 21%. Food grade SMP prices were also up 7% on average in the EU due to strong export demand, with the largest movement seen in Belgium. NZ SMP was also up strongly by 9%. WMP ended up 6% on average in the EU, rising most in both France and the Netherlands +7%. Whey powder export prices rose in the EU 14%. Cheese prices have increased, with Irish Cheddar ending up in the UK by 9%.

Egg

The UK processed egg market traded in stronger tone in September, starting in a static position before gathering pace towards the end of the month. Demand increased for egg products across the food manufacturing sector towards the end of the month as the UK finally moved away from the holiday season.

Dried Fruit

In dried fruit, Turkish raisins declined by 8% due to expectations of improved output, but sultanas, dried apricots and dried figs were all unchanged. The Greek currant crop is smaller than last year, and as such, prices will remain firm for the rest of the season.

Tuna

Finished goods prices remain very firm. It is unlikely that we will see a significant drop off in prices the market is short of skipjack. The “low point” for this year may still be $2000/MT which in unprecedented!All local canneries are short of raw material so fish which is available commands high premiums. Last price paid was $2425/MT; an increase of over $150/MT in under a month.

Congratulations bakery industry Awards winnersbAKO North Western would like to congratulate our customers following this year’s bIA awards. The extra special 25th Anniversary bakery Industry Awards held at the park lane, Hilton in london and hosted by Jason Donovan rewarded some of our region’s bakers. barbakan Delicatessen, based in chorlton, was awarded the prize for the best new loaf. The loaf, called the ‘contadino’ meaning ‘peasant farmer’ is a “delicious combination of fermented white dough, herbs and sun-dried tomatoes”, in which holes are then punched in the top and filled with provolone cheese. Another of our customers, greenhalghs, took one of the top honours in the product innovation category with an Australian inspired delicacy. The ‘chewy bread’ inspired by Director David Smart’s trip to Australia is a half scone, half crumpet mix, (later to be known as crumpet bread) has been trialled in store and has been as much of a hit with customers as it has been with the judges.
