    Stress has unfortunately become a normal partof our lives. In modern society, it is one of thesilent culprits that affects anyone. A littlemight not be too bad for anyone, but continuousstress can cause negative effects on your mind, bodyand overall life.A stress statistic data showed that 77% of people inthe U.S. regularly experience physical symptomscaused by stress. Long-term stress can causeheadache, acne, chest pain, high blood pressure, fa-tigue, teeth grinding, depression, anxiety etc.Making use of stress management methods is essen-tial to take charge of ones own health and mind. Al-though it is not an easy job, managing stress is aprerequisite to living a healthy and happy life. I havesuffered from stress for a long time without realizingit, so to help manage your own stress, here are 9practical tips that helped me keep stress at bay:

    1. Exercise regularly

    Exercise is one of the most effective treatmentsagainst stress. Not only does it reduce stress levels,but it can also reduce fatigue, improve concentrationlevels and the physical ability to fight disease. Re-search shows that doing exercise in the morning onan empty stomach has a greater impact than at othertime. If you feel a lack in energy, you can eat a fewdates to stabilize your blood sugar levels.Exercising every morning for 20-30 minutes is agreat way to start your day. There are many differenttypes of exercise to choose from, so do whichever issuitable and enjoyable for you.

    Start with small changes

    Exercise does not always have to be a specific work-out; it can include any activity that increases yourheart rate, so try being active whenever the opportu-nity arises. For example, make it a habit to take thestairs instead of the elevator, or walk/bicycle whentraveling short distances instead of riding a car.Our Prophet Muhammad allallhu 'alayhiwasallam(peace and blessings of Allh be upon him) was re-ported to walk in a fast pace, now known as a powerwalk. In a hadith, Ali rayAllhu 'anhu (may Allhbe pleased with him) described Muhammadsallallhu 'alayhiwasallam (peace and blessings ofAllh be upon him) vigorous way of walking:

    When he walked, he lifted his leg with vigour. Hedid not drag his feet on the ground like women do.When he walked, because of the speed and force ofthe legs, it seemed as if he was descending from ahigh place. [Tirmidhi]

    In another hadith about the Prophet allallhu 'alay-hiwasallam (peace and blessings of Allh be uponhim), Abu HurairahrayAllhu 'anhu (may Allh bepleased with him) narrated that:I did not see anyone walk faster than him, as if theearth folded for him. A few moments ago he wouldbe here, and then there. We found it difficult to keeppace when we walked with him, and he walked at hisnormal pace. [Tirmidhi]Remember that if you take exercise as a chore, aftersometime you could lose interest or find excuses notto do it. Therefore, try to encourage your familymembers to join you, as any activity done with oth-ers tends to be more enjoyable.

    2. Do breathing exercises

    Breathing exercises are another excellent antidotefor stress. When you feel really stressed out, try thisfor 5-10 minutes:breathe in with your nose for 5 secondshold yourbreath for 3 seconds, thenslowly breathe out throughyour mouth for a count of 7 seconds. This breathingexercise will calm your body and you will start tofeel relaxed. Just remember to breathe with yourbelly, specifically your diaphragm (the muscle thatsits just below your lungs), rather than your chest,for more efficient breathing.Doing this regularly is good for a healthy body andmind. Studies have shown that doing a similarbreathing technique while meditating for as little as8 minutes a day can slow down the negative effectsassociated with ageing.

    3. Eat right

    Most people do not realize it, but food can also af-fect stress levels. Certain types of food and drink canincrease stress levels, such as fast foods, butter,cheese, meat, shellfish, sugar, tea, coffee, and softdrinks.This does not mean that you have to avoid themcompletely, but you should consume them in moder-ation.Remember that Allah subnahuwata'la (glorified

    and exalted be He) says: And eat and drink, butbe not excessive. Indeed, He likes not those whocommit excess. [Quran: Chapter 7, Verse 31]Some people like to drink tea or coffee when theyare stressed from their studies or work. It may feelrefreshing for a short time, but they also contain cer-tain neuro-stimulators like caffeine and theo-bromine, which are proven to increase stress levels.Fortunately, there are also some foods that can helprelieve stress, particularly foods with a high vitaminand mineral content. These include fresh vegetablesand fruits, yogurt and green smoothies. Eating fishthat are rich in omega-3 fatty acids such as salmon,trout, sardines and tuna three times a week, can alsohelp reduce stress levels.

    4. Sleep well

    Sleep is a vital part of our life. To reduce stress-in-ducing hormones, a good nights sleep is exceed-ingly important. When you are tired and notwell-rested, your stress hormones increase. You caneasily remedy this by sleeping 7-9 hours per night.However, the best quality sleep occurs in the earlypart of the night, which is in accordance with thesunnah of the Prophet allallhu 'alayhiwasallam(peace and blessings of Allh be upon him) who ad-vised us to sleep right after Ishasalah. Sleepingaround 9-10 pm also makes it easier to wake up forFajr. However, if you happen to wake up in the mid-dle of the night and cannot fall back asleep, get upand pray tahajjud. Also if you get chance, take a

    short power nap after Dhuhr.

    5. Laugh

    They say laughter is the best medicine and not onlyis it good for the body, but also for the mind as it canreduce stress hormones. So whenever you get achance, try to enjoy the blessings of a good laugh.Of course, a lasting smile (also sunnah) can be justas beneficial, as your brain is tricked into beinghappy thereby releasing stress-relieving chemicals.You could also try other activities that make youhappy, like reading a book, baking, or taking a walk.

    6. Enjoy the company of family and friends

    The lonelier you are, the more you will attract nega-tive feelings. Keep in touch with your family mem-bers and close friends to feel better and spread somelove. A study from the University of Michigan foundthat chatting released hormones involved in bonding,which in turn reduced anxiety and stress, thus mak-ing the participants happier.So to reduce stress, enjoy some time with your fam-ily and friends by doing any kinds of activity, for ex-ample, go for a picnic, a bike ride or just chat. Notonly will it help reduce your stress levels but alsohelp to build a strong bonds between each other.

You can use your free time in a productiveway by doing something to serve your community,or simply relaxing and listening to Quran recitation,a lecture by your favorite lecturer, or reading any ha-dith or Islamic book.This way you can increase your knowledge andfaith, and also help calm your daily struggles. It is anecessary asset in the life of a person who wants tolive stress-free. When you learn about of the strug-gles the sahabah made for their religion or how diffi-cult it was for them initially to even pray five timesin a day, a person can easily see that their struggle issmall compared with that of our Prophet allallhu'alayhiwasallam (peace and blessings of Allh beupon him) and his sahabah.I read an article where a sister mentioned that shehad a special place in her house where nobody is al-lowed to disturb her, not even her children. She wentthere everyday for some time to praise AlmightilyAllah subnahuwata'la (glorified and exalted beHe) as if she was in a cave. Having a similar dhikrzone in your own house is an excellent way to maketime to connect with Allah subnahuwata'la (glori-fied and exalted be He) and enjoy some peacefulmoments.

    As Allah subnahuwata'la (glorified and exaltedbe He) says in the Quran: and seek from thebounty of Allah, and remember Allah often that youmay succeed. [Quran: Chapter 62, Verse 10]

    8. Manage your time well

    To manage your time properly, identify your MITs:most important tasks; and do those first everyday toget them out of the way. You can also develop a rou-tine based on your regular tasks, so you can focus onthe tasks that need more attention. There are manyapps available to help you, such as 30/30 or Todoist.

    If boredom is the reason for your stress, then simplyuse that time for learning or understanding verses ofthe Quran, or even try to memorize it. As Ibn AbbasrayAllhu 'anhu (may Allh be pleased with him)narrated that Prophet Mohammad allallhu 'alayhi-wasallam (peace and blessings of Allh be uponhim) said:

    There are two blessings which many people lose:(They are) Health and free time for doing good.[Bukhari]

    9. Be content with what you have

    Most of us are not satisfied with what we have. Youmight be stressed about not getting that promotion,or unsatisfied with your job/salary, or tensed withyour children etc. Remember that there are peopledealing with harder situations that yourself; some arehomeless, jobless, or without children.

    In worldly matters, look to those below you to behumbled (looking above you triggers jealousy andungratefulness), while in religious matters look tothose above you to get inspired to reach a higherlevel of taqwa.

    You must always be thankful for what Allahsubnahuwata'la (glorified and exalted be He)granted you. You might think that what you want isbetter for you but He knows what is truly best foryou. Allah subnahuwata'la (glorified and exaltedbe He) might be giving you what you need or Hemay be testing your iman so that you may call uponHim and increase in piety. The path you are on is theright one for you, even if you cannot see that rightnow.

    Stress cannot solve your problems, but it only causesmore, especially to your health and social life. So, behappy with what you have, be patient, try to do yourbest and ask Allah subnahuwata'la (glorified andexalted be He) for guidance.

    Allah subnahuwata'la (glorified and exalted beHe) said: So remember Me; I will remember you.And be grateful to Me and do not deny Me.[Quran: Chapter 2, Verse 152]

    In reality, it is difficult to avoid all sources of stressas we encounter a myriad of situations on a dailybasis, but do not let stress control your life.     Adistant Indian friend seems to spend much ofhis time scouring world media for all thingsIslamophobic. He shares the insight thought-fully with people like yours truly often with his owncommentary in big, bold type. His mails often beginwith Mad Muslims did this or that. He oftentrolls me and my types on Twitter, imploring us toopen our eyes and go get a life.

    I do not mind the intellectual engagement althoughhis love of all things Muslim gets a tad overwhelm-ing at times.

    A global study by the Pew Research Center thisweek suggesting Islam is the fastest growing religionin the world and that by 2050 India could overtakeIndonesia as the country with the largest number ofMuslims got my friend and his ideological kin pre-dictably excited. Already obsessing over the bogeyof an alarming rise in Muslim population in India,the findings couldnt have come at a more appropri-ate time for the Parivar. By the way, if it is any con-solation, before India, it is Pakistan which is set tobeat Indonesia as the nation with the largest Muslimpopulation in the next 15 years. And if the Pew studyis to be believed, this could be the global pattern ofpopulation growth in the next few decades.

    Over the next four decades, Christians will remainthe largest religious group, but Islam will grow fasterthan any other major religion, notes the study titled,The Future of World Religions: Population Growthand Projections 2010-2050.

    It suggests that by 2050 there will be near parity be-tween Christians and Muslims (2.9 billion and 2.8billion respectively), possibly for the first time inworld history. And if the trend continues, Islam willemerge ahead of Christianity as the most popularfaith in the world by CE 2070. But Hindu friends cantake heart from the fact that the Hindu rate of growthwill also continue apace with Hinduism emerging asthe third largest faith in the world. However, whileIndia will remain a predominantly Hindu majoritycountry, it will also be home to the worlds largestMuslim population, which will grow only margin-ally, from 15 to 17 percent.

    The Hindu population is projected to rise by 34 per-cent worldwide, from a little over 1 billion to nearly1.4 billion by 2050. Interestingly, the next fourdecades will also see Europes Muslim population Islam is already the fastest growing faith on the con-tinent nearly double its demographic share, jump-ing from the present 43 million to 71 million or 10percent of the white, Caucasian, Christian popula-tion. These are fascinating findings and may havequietly lifted the spirits of the easily excitable faith-ful at a time when theres so little to celebrate. Amere increase in numbers does not necessarily prom-ise a rosier future and a greater say and share inglobal affairs and resources though.

    The Pew study must have also been greeted with agroan by many around the world at a time whenMuslims arent exactly the most popular peoplearound. A world with more mad Muslims, as myfriend often describes us, may seem like the ultimatenightmare to the rest of the world.

    But given the endless shenanigans of IS, Al-Qaeda,Boko Haram, Shabab, Taleban and our other bene-factors, can you really blame the world if mere men-tion of Islam and Muslims sets off alarm bellseverywhere? Islam is supposed to have come as ablessing and bearer of glad tidings to all of mankind.Muslims believe that Quran is the Last Word ofGod that must be shared with and become the collec-tive legacy of humanity. According to the Book, theLast Prophet (peace be upon him) was sent as Rah-mat Al-Alameen, a mercy for the whole world. Itwas Islams universal message of peace and onenessof humanity that within a short span of 23 yearsunited the perpetually sparring, cacophonous tribesof Arabia into a force for peace and good and con-quered the world.

    Yet some lunatics are hell-bent upon painting thisliberating, all-embracing faith as a rigid, rabid cult ofhate and death. Not a day passes without someshameful atrocity and abomination being carried outin its blessed name. Indeed, the extremists havespawned a whole new ecology of violence and indif-ference. And the world has gotten so used to thesefrequent acts of horror and shame that they no longerprovoke a strong, popular response.

    heads in collective shame, many of them simply shutout the obscene reality that these extremists havecome to represent. As a consequence, whether onelikes it or not, it is the fringe that is increasinglybeing perceived as representing and speaking forIslam and Muslims.

    The Economist magazine, often speaking for theWestern intellectual establishment, has concludedthat liberal Islam has already lost the battle, if notthe war, to manic extremists like IS. Which is, to putit mildly, a dangerously flawed and limited view ofthe complex reality of the Islamic world. Notwith-standing all the havoc that groups like Al-Qaeda and

    Isis have wreaked in the past few years in the nameof Islam and its followers, they remain a very tiny,little fringe.

    Despite all their claims and protestations to the con-trary, the extremists do not represent or speak foreven a fraction of the vast and diverse population ofnearly two billion people. Besides, all said and done,much of the violence and destruction unleashed bythe extremists, despicable and deplorable as it is, isspawned by a combination of factors including his-torical injustices and political and economic dispos-session. Look at the rise of the so-called IslamicState, for instance.

    As President Barack Obama acknowledged recently,it is the US invasion of Iraq and the fine mess thatthe coalition of the willing subsequently made of a

    proud, prosperous country that gave birth to IS.A report in the UKs Independent this week offerseye-opening insight into how former Baathists andgenerals of Iraqs disbanded army helped in spawn-ing the phenomenon called IS. Indeed, they are saidto be largely running the Isis show, (which perhapsexplains the spine-chilling killings and casual brutal-ity, characteristic of the former Baathist regime). In-deed, if the whole of the Muslim world, from Africato Afghanistan, is in freefall today, much of thecredit goes to the self-serving, shortsighted interven-tionist policies of world powers. Yemen, in the front-line of the US war on terror for the past manyyears, is the latest victim.

    That said, Muslims cannot afford to content them-selves by blaming the West for this mess. No matterwho sowed the seeds of strife and no matter whostarted the fire, they must do all the firefighting. Forit is their house that is on fire.

    Muslims must speak out more often and more force-fully for reason, tolerance and peace and against thegrowing extremist attempts to appropriate, taint anddistort the universal teachings and message of theirfaith. What is the point of swelling Muslim ranks ifthey remain afflicted by perpetual strife and vio-lence? Whats the point of our growing numbers ifwe do not contribute to the progress and wellbeingof humanity at large?

    Authentic narrations inform us that Abdullahbin Amr bin al Aas, the companion of theProphet (pbuh) was only 11 years youngerthan his father Amr bin al Aas (May Allah bepleased with both). So it is said to be the case of Ab-dullah Zubair and his father Zubair bin Awwam(May Allah be pleased with them both).

    While streaming along the local trends, some ofwhich are global, a majority of Muslims have startedtaking some Islamic values as out dated and impossi-ble or impractical in today's life. They might not sayit but their attitudes and actions show it.

    A prominent Scholar of India who is well over 60got married to a young girl of 22, (and this was notan affair). Wherever they go, people in the Muslimcircles, react with surprise. Their reactions are like:"What an odd couple! How can a guardian get hisdaughter get married to a man her grandfather's age!In today's times it should be better avoided." By theway the couple is happy and don't care for theblamers. Alhamdulillah.

    A comfortable way to be happy, is not to care for"what will people say" if you have not done anythingthat is haram.

    If you are ashamed of Islamic values, even of thepermitted things, then something is wrong with yourconfidence, not with the values, because Islamic val-ues never get outdated nor its fruits get stale.One ofthe many Islamic traditions, that needs to be revived,and which offers solutions to many prevailing prob-lems, is the age of marriage.

    The West has a similar term, 'The Age of Consent',which means that a girl or a boy is at liberty tochoose a sleeping partner.

    In some Western countries, including Sweden, theage of consent is around 13 years, with some coun-tries having 16 years of age, thus the news of girlsgetting pregnant in schools and facilities of condomsand anti-pregnancy pills are not looked down upon.It is not a taboo.

    Islamically, it is a taboo to get involved in illicit rela-tions. Islam welcomes the age of consent if it is asso-

    ciated only with marriage. For example, Islam ac-cepts if a 13 year old girl in Sweden gets married,but a fornicating relationship will not be tolerated.

    Government surveys in India reveal that more than30 percent of girls in inner India get married beforethey reach 18, but there are no statistics of girls shar-ing a bed with boys during their school age. The for-mer is taken as a genuine concern of worry while thelatter is taken as 'fruits of liberty'.

    The Prophet's (pbuh) marriage to Aisha, who wasmore than 10 years younger to his youngest daugh-ter, went un-protested even by his staunchest ene-mies. No Jew or a Christian or a Mushrik ever raisedthe issue, but we see that many Muslims, who areeducated in the secular environment, feel uncomfort-able on being confronted. In fact, the smart Muslimwould turn the tables over putting counter argumentson illicit affairs among school age children in mostparts of the world. Twenty percent of abortions car-ried out worldwide are done for the purpose of get-ting rid of unwanted babies in illicit relations.

    Islam has offered so many options to make marriageeasy and zina (adultery and fornication), difficult.

    Consider these norms which were very general inthose times and essentially required in today's time:

    Marriages do not include expensive ban-quets. In one of his marriages, the Prophet (pbuh)asked people to bring whatever eatables they hadand the people shared the meal.

    If a girl likes a virtuous man she can also re-quest her guardian to send a proposal for marriage.

    A pregnant widow delivered her child andprepared herself for another marriage. Her guardianfound it odd and presented the matter to the Prophet(pbuh) who approved it.

    The age factor is never an issue when arrang-ing a marriage.

    A truthful man like Abu Bakr Siddique (r.a.) neverminded his daughter getting married to the Prophet(pbuh). Ali bin Abi Talib got his daughter married to

    Umar bin al Khattab (r.a.). Abdullah bin Abbas said:By Allah! Even if I knew that there is only one dayleft in my life yet I would get married!

    Size, shape and color never matter. UmmuhatulMom'ineen Sauda, the wife of the Prophet was awoman of large size, people could identify her eas-ily.Another wife, Safiyya (r.a.) was short and

    Khadeeja was 15 years older to the Prophet. (MayAllah be pleased with them all)The elderly Khadeeja and the teenage Aisha were thedearest wives of the Prophet (pbuh) and he (pbuh),never showed any signs of regrets for marryingthem.

    Indeed in the Messenger is the best example for youto follow ,Surah al Ahzab, Verse 21.

    A young maiden accepted the proposal of a dark andshort sahabi just on the recommendation of the

    Prophet. She did not compare her status and lookswith his. Narrators say that after the sahabi diedthere were offers of marriage proposals from manyNoble Arabs to this lady, who had accepted the pro-posal of a man not matching his looks.

    AbuTalha (r.a.) had been injured in the battle ofUhud and he had a small limp. Despite that he was

    receiving marriage proposals.

    Moral of the story? Even noble men love to marrywomen who do not mind their physical and socialshortcomings because of their religious inclinations.This is what is expected when male and female Mus-lims desire to marry a person of religion.

    My advice to sisters: Huge and lavish houses and lu-crative careers should not be the main criteria forchoosing your partner. Prefer Simplicity. Simplicityoffers the best alternative.There are very few boys

    who earn huge amount of money to satisfy your ex-pensive desires and can offer you luxurious toursand designer items,but there are large numbers ofboys who can keep you happy with little amountthey earn.

    Failed Marriages! An Analysis

    A young man was once complaining of his matrimo-nial problems. He said Alas! My marriage hasfailed. I consoled him, If you are divorced, thenAllah will give you another wife, Inshallah. Theman retorted, No, No, I am not divorced, andthough my marriage has failed, we continue to staytogether. We are grading our lives !" This is a com-mon phrase now.

    It was then that I was introduced to an another cate-gory of 'Failed Marriages' in our society. We are nothappy but we still continue to stay together. Most ofthe failed marriages fall in this category. Many cou-ples drag their matrimonial lives unhappily for vari-ous reasons. Some are middle aged couples who fearabout their own future, especially the wife who maybe worried about any future prospective in gettingmarried, while some drag their lives being worriedabout their kids.

    What stand my daughter, being 37 years old, willhave if I get her divorced, when there are hundredsof unmarried girls of 2530 years, earning and look-ing good, said a pained father whose daughter con-tinued suffering in her in-laws house, where herhusband refused to earn, her mother-in-law made herwork for hours and the family believed that though itwas a case of a failed marriage, the relation must goon because she had two daughters.

    Among the best solutions, can be proper counseling.We require good counselors who can talk to the war-ring couples and sort out their issues. Someone sen-ior in the family or a genuine senior personality canbe asked to interfere in the matter and get it solved.Its a big contribution to the society. It brings to mymind the honorable verse from the Quran fromSurah Nisa, chapter4: If you fear a breach betweenthe two, appoint two arbiters, one from his familyand the other from hers If they wish for peace,Allah will cause their reconciliation. Kindly note thelast part of the verse: IF THEY WISH FOR PEACE,ALLAH WILL CAUSE THEIR RECONCILIA-TION.

    Once, I was a party among the peacekeepers of myfamily where we were trying to sort out an about-to-break marriage of my relative. The stubborn couplewas in a hurry getting separated as they were intohostile fights since the beginning of their marriedlife. We were all about to give up when my grand-mother, Saeeda Abdul Karim Nadiadwala, stormedin at the last moment. She walked up to us and said,Dont take any decision, and let me have a wordwith the couple for few minutes in privacy. Weagreed and the couple followed my grandmother.     Many a times, a timely interference of an elderlyperson in a matrimonial dispute can save a marriagelife even though it seems that it is running into roughweathers. But slaps are not always a solution unlessyou hold a position in the heart and the mind of thewarring couple that goes unchallenged in terms oflove and affection. You must have that charisma thatpeople will give up their egos upon your command.This is a sign or characteristic of a good and a suc-cessful counselor.

But since 2009, Najbuns day hasnot passed working in the sun but under a roof.Thanks to Dhaani, she now runs her home as well asthe village. No wonder if she is the next head of hervillage.

    An Islamic Perspective of Environment: In Islam, the environment is a very broad conceptand includes climates and its components; plants, an-imals, human beings and all things found in theground, oceans and the atmosphere. Thus the con-cept of the environment is very comprehensive en-compassing each and everything. Allah Almightyhas created everything in balance. Utilizing the nat-ural resources in the wrong way harms the balance.So, the human beings are totally responsible for

    maintaining and conserving the environment. Forinstance the word water is explicitly mentioned inthe Holy Quran in about fifty verses; this is in addi-tion to the rain, clouds, rivers and oceans. ProphetMuhammad (peace be upon him) said, Dont wastewater even you are on a running river, which showsthe importance of water in the Islam. The Prophetfurther emphasized the conservation of the environ-ment and the prevention of its destruction. It is for-bidden to cut trees during the battles. Destroying theenvironment is encroaching on the rights of futuregenerations. The environment must be maintained asit was found. People should consider the future ofthe next generations, which also have the right tobenefit from the environment. According to the Is-lamic thought, benefits from the environment shouldnot be limited to some people. Instead, it should bethe source of life for all people at all times.

    The issues related to the environment appear overhundred and fifty times in the Quran. The Islamicview of the environment extends to all things foundon the grounds of the earth and in the atmosphere.Environmental protection is important in the Quranand Sunnah. Islam considers the people to be re-sponsible for any damage done on earth. Therefore,people should protect the environment and conservethe natural resources. Maintaining the balance of thenatural resources is the only way to guarantee sur-vival. May Allah Almighty Guide us to serve the en-vironment, Amen.

    There are some who claim that the Quran is incom-plete, that the Quran does not explain all things, andthat certain issues and subjects must be consultedfrom other sources to get a clearer picture, such asgoing to the hadiths and tafsir. An example would bethe prayers, to fully understand and learn how topray one must consult the sunnah of the ProphetMuhammad (pbuh) which is to be found in the ha-diths, hence the critics of the Quran argue that thisproves the Quran is incomplete.

    The critics also argue that the Quran is in contradic-tion as it claims to be a book that has explainedthings in detail:

    006.114 Say: Shall I seek for judge other thanAllah? when He it is Who hath sent unto you theBook, explained in detail. They know full well, to

    whom We have given the Book, that it hath beensent down from thy Lord in truth. Never be then ofthose who doubt.

    010.024 The likeness of the life of the present is asthe rain which We send down from the skies: by itsmingling arises the produce of the earth- which pro-vides food for men and animals: (It grows) till theearth is clad with its golden ornaments and is deckedout (in beauty): the people to whom it belongs thinkthey have all powers of disposal over it: Therereaches it Our command by night or by day, and We

    ye fear them as ye fear each other? Thus do we ex-plain the Signs in detail to a people that understand.So does the Quran get disproved when Muslims goto hadiths or tafsirs? Not really, because the Quranitself says:

    004.080 He who obeys the Messenger, obeysAllah: But if any turn away, We have not sent thee towatch over their (evil deeds).

    So as you can see Muslims are commanded to obeythe Prophet Muhammad (pbuh), and this verse ex-plains the importance of obeying the prophet, thatobeying the prophet is infact like obeying God sincethe prophet is conveying what God commanded.Hence when Muslims consult the hadiths and thesunnah of the prophet for explanations, this doesntdisprove the Quran, rather it is following the Quranscommand. Because the Quran commands us to obeythe prophet.

    Here is another important verse:2: 151- Similarly (to complete My Blessings on you)We have sent among you a Messenger (MuhammadSAW) of your own, reciting to you Our Verses (theQurn) and sanctifying you, and teaching you theBook (the Qurn) and the Hikmah (i.e. Sunnah, Is-lmic laws and Fiqh jurisprudence), and teachingyou that which you used not to know.

    As you can see the Quran says that the ProphetMuhammad (pbuh) teaches people the book, sowhen people consult the hadiths where they find theProphet Muhammad (pbuh) teaching us about theQuran, this doesnt disprove the Quran as being in-complete, rather it is following the Quran.

    The Quran is indeed complete, because it tells usthat we should obey the prophet, and that the prophetteaches the book, so when we learn the book andlearn certain things from another source such as thehadith it is following the Qurans command.Remember the previous quoted verse, which statedthat obeying the prophet is like obeying God, hencewhen one takes knowledge and wisdom about theQuran from the prophet it is like taking it from Godsince the prophet got his wisdom and knowledgeabout the Quran from God.

    So the Quran explains to us that we should infact goto the prophet to also understand the Quran and itsrulings and teachings.

    Had the Quran not instructed us to obey the prophetand consult him for explanations and rulings thenone could say the Quran is incomplete, yet the Quranexplains to us that we should consult the prophetwho teaches the book so that we may understand itbetter, hence the Quran explains everything for us.

    And here is another verse:

    4: 59- O you who believe! Obey Allh and obey theMessenger (Muhammad SAW), and those of you(Muslims) who are in authority. (And) if you differin anything amongst yourselves, refer it to Allh andHis Messenger (SAW), if you believe in Allh and inthe Last Day. That is better and more suitable forfinal determination.

    The Quran commands us to obey those in authority,such as the scholars and the ones of knowledge,hence when we dont understand something or needto have something explained to us then we shouldrefer to these people in authority about the matter.The verse goes on to say that if we have any differ-ences amongst ourselves then we should resolve thisissue by first going to Allah, which means going tothe Quran to see what Allah commands, and thensecondly we should go to the prophet which meanshis sunnah which is to be found in the hadiths andsee what it says. Hence in this verse the Quran isgiving clear authority to the sunnah of the prophetwhich is to be found in the hadiths, only second tothe Noble Quran.So how can someone claim the Quran is incompletewhen the Quran strictly commands us to refer to theprophet for guidance and instruction? How cansomeone claim the Quran is incomplete when itgrants such a high authority for the prophets teach-ings and guidance?

    This verse basically sums it all up, that Muslimshave two sources to refer to for explanations, onewhich is the Quran which comes first, and the sec-ond is the sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh),after this we can go to the ones in authority, thelearned scholars and gather knowledge from themsince the scholars are the inheritors of the prophetsas the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) taught.

In the very early days of hisProphethood (in Makkah Mukarramah), he used thehouse of Arqam bin Abi Al-Arqam as a secret centrefor prayer, preaching, education and training. HazratArqams house was strategically located at the footof Mount Safa, only a short distance from the Kabah.The Dar Al-Arqam (House of Arqam) served as thecentre as there was no Mosque in Makkah Mukar-ramah at that time. The Holy Prophet (PBUH) usedto meet his Companions at Dal Al-Arqam and teachthem the essential tenets of Islam. The Companionsused the Dal Al-Arqam to perform the prayers in se-cret fearing wrath of the non-believers in MakkahMukarramah. However, the Prophet (PBUH) wouldperform the prayers in open for all to see. As iswell-known the Holy Prophet (PBUH) migrated toMadinah Munawwarah. On the way he camped atthe outskirts of Madinah Munwwarah at a placecalled Quba for four days. During this very brief pe-riod he laid the foundation of a mosque, now knownas the Masjid Quba. The Prophet (PBUH) left Qubaon a Friday to head into Madinah. About a kilometerfrom Quba he passed the village of Banu Salim binAuf. There he offered the fir Jummah congrega-tional Salaat. Approximately one hundred Muslimsparticipated in this first Jummah Salaat. This is thesecond Mosque and known as the Masjid Jumhahand Masjid Bani Salim. After reaching MadinahMunawwarah, the first step by the Holy Prophet wasto build one more mosque which is now known asthe Prophets Mosque (Masjid Al-Nabawi). Therewere many more mosques build by him and hisblessed companions. These indicate the importanceof mosques in Islam.

    Masjid Al-Nabawi is a role model for all mosques.It was used by the believers for the congregationalprayers. The Holy Prophet (PBUH) used it for de-livering his sermons covering all aspects of life. Heused to meet the visiting delegations and also sent

    his delegations from Masjid Al-Nabawi. The func-tions of the mosque in the early period of Islam in-cluded:

    1.Apart from the Jummah (Friday) congregation, theMuslims used to assemble in the mosque in difficulttimes and sorted out the issues confronting them. 2.The mosque was like a university to the grownupswho acquired and imparted education and knowl-edge. 3.For the children, it provided elementary educationwhere they were taught to read and write. 4.Literary gatherings and discussions were held in it. 5.Seminars were held to promote intellectual activi-ties. 6.The Qazi (Judges) set up their courts to impart jus-tice. 7.Sometimes the criminals and convicts were placedin custody. 8.It provided accommodation to the poor, needy,homeless and travellers. 9.Food was distributed among the poor and hungry. 10.At times it was also used as the state guesthouse. 11.It was also used as hospital for the sick. 12.Marriages were held in the mosques. 13.It was also the state armory where weapons weremade and stored.14.The Baitul Maal (House of wealth, used for han-dling financial matters) was also in it. 15.Any other matter of importance was discussedand resolved in it.

    May Allah Almighty help us to realize the impor-tance of Masajid and make us its obedient servants,Amen. Bibliography:

    I can't describe how much sadness and jealousy I feltwhen I saw a Muslim woman on the street walkingwith her beautiful hijab. On one hand, I was sohappy to see her because in Budapest it is pretty rareto see a Muslim woman with hijab but on the otherhand, I felt so disappointed as I was a Muslim too,yet I feared she will never recognize me and greetingme with "Salam"; rather she'll simply walk away noteven thinking of that she just passed by a Muslimsister. I was so disappointed as I felt "out of thegroup."

    Hijab was a sign of a real Muslim woman for me and

    I felt I am like in between: A Muslim as I already de-clared my faith, but still "not a real one".Hardships of a New Convert

    This time I was almost seventeen years old. Every-one knows that assuming the faith in Islam in theWest is like throwing a sheep to the wolves; it willcause many days and months of struggling and fight-ing with the family and friends, basically about anyissue. But insha' Allah, Allah will reward you forthese hard moments and soon comes the ease.I guess my faith was just not strong enough to bear

    During my last highschool year, I just feltit is impossible towalk in with hijab. Noway. My class alreadyexcluded me; they at-tacked me every daywith some hurtfulcomments and could-n't leave a minutewithout making fun ofme. When I returnedhome, the story con-tinued with my fam-ily. I could only findreal peace while lis-tening to the HolyQuran lying on my

    bed.

    So, after all of this I guess my faith was just notstrong enough to bear fighting for my hijab as well;it kept on burning inside.

    However, I took every chance to wear hijab. When Iattended any lecture of a Muslim community or vis-ited the mosque, I quickly put it on at the entrance asI felt too embarrassed to step into the House of Allahwithout it, especially in front of Muslim men.

    I'll never forget when a young Arab man saw me infront of the mosque putting the hijab on. He came tome and called me a hypocrite and that I am not a real

    Muslim if I was not wearing the hijab properly. I gottoo shocked and shy but I wished to tell him what aconvert is going through for Islam and wished thathe understood me and gave me some kind words toencourage me, and not attack me!

    Unfortunately, it is such a common mistake amongMuslims in the West. All the time, we give otherMuslims a good telling-off if we see they are doingsomething we learned differently or we've neverseen it before so we think it's wrong. The problem isnot informing another Muslim, but the way we dothat.

    In my situation, this guy was right: I was wearingmy hijab only in the mosque, which is wrong ofcourse, and I was completely aware of that. I didn'tdo it out of ignorance or lack of knowledge. But whydid he have to use such harsh and hurtful words witha new Muslim without even asking about her cir-cumstances?!

    As a new Muslim, especially in the West, whenyou're already the target of almost every member ofyour society and the most beloved people, your fam-ily is against you, a world collapses in a newly con-vert when she even gets such a "nice" treatment fromher brothers and sisters in faith!

    When you embrace Islam and discover the beauty ofit, you think all other Muslims see it as you see. Youthink all other Muslims are struggling to follow theright path and that they'll be all so kind and so niceto you. That they are your real brothers and sisters!And the more you go to the mosque and the more

    you interact with other Muslims the more you realizethat you are just dreaming and it's time to wake up.Muslims are human beings as well with the samegood and bad characters as anyone else.Finally!

    Going back to the issue of hijab, naturally this inci-dent fastened the guilt in me. Al-Hamdulil-Allah,after high school Allah responded to my supplica-tions and helped me to finally wear the hijab.Next to my studies, I decided to work and find a job.It was spring holiday and I got an interview to amultinational call center. I can't lose anything. I need

    to do it. I need to go with my hijab and if I am ac-cepted in this workplace than that is it; no excuseanymore, no more procrastination. Its time to as-sume my hijab.I woke up in the morning of the interview with somefear but I confidently tied my hijab, took a big breathand stepped out of the home, the first time with myhijab. I was so worried about people's reaction whatthey will do, what they will say and how they willlook at me. I went to the bus stop; an elderly ladywas standing there staring at me as if I was an alienas I walked toward her.

    'Everything is going to be just fine' - I thought tomyself.And it actually was. The bus came full of people, ofcourse staring at me with the elderly lady, but I wasjust thinking about Allah that now He is pleased withme,insha' Allah, and proud of me that I finally did it.I was overwhelmed with joy and gratefulness towardAllah that He made my dream come true. I put my

    headset and just listened to the Quran the whole wayuntil reaching the place of the interview while tryingto ignore the staring eyes.

    Alhamdulil Allah, I did great in the interview!Moreover, I didn't get any hurtful comment orstrange question. They treated me as a human being,as anyone else in the interview and it pushed mylow-confidence up to the sky!

    But what would be the best way to make my par-ents accept my hijab?Please, forgive me for everything and look at who Ibecame since I am a Muslim; I am more kind to you.That question was still unanswered. I didn't see anypoint to talk to my mom face-to-face as I already didmany times before and we always ended up in ahuge, long fight. As I am terrible in expressing mydeep thoughts and honest feelings, I decided to writeout everything in a long letter telling her everythingthat was hidden inside me.

    An Honest Letter to my MomAfter 4 years, it is hard to remember what exactly Iwrote in that letter, but I know I wrote it from myheart. I only remember one part clearly which wassomething like this:

    "Aren't you grateful to someone when he gives you apresent or does for you a favor?Won't you be particularly kind to him after that,thank him and always look for an opportunity toplease him?

    Well, God gives us everything. Just look around:we're alive, we're healthy, we have a nice home, acar, work - I just got a job - my sister is a great stu-dent at school we've got everything and if wewant something, we ask God to help and grant it tous and in sha' Allah, He will. Then, shall we not begrateful to Him?

    And He can do anything! He can change anything!

    Shall we not try to do as He asked us to do in orderto please Him? You're trying to please dad, yourboss, your children, your parents, even your neigh-bors. So why wouldn't we want to please God who isactually the only One who can give us or take itaway in the blink of an eye.

    Hijab belongs to me; it is part of me, part of being aMuslim. As you cover an expensive jewel from theinquiring looks, women in Islam (and not just inIslam) are wearing the veil and covering themselvesfor the same purpose because women are precious.Please, understand that it is very important for me, Iam really suffering from not wearing it and I can'tendure it anymore. Please, forgive me for everythingand look at who I became since I am a Muslim; I ammore kind to you; I am helping you in everythingyou ask for. Don't look at what I can't please youwith because I can't take off my hijab. It is some-thing beyond me and it is only for God. But look atwhat I do for you and insha' Allah, I will do even

    more than that."

    At the end, I asked my mom to accept me with hijabbecause I can't come home without it. I left the letteron the dining table. I took some clothes as well withme as I decided to spend the next few days at thehome of one of my best Muslim friends to give hersome time to think.

    Al-Hamdulil-Allah, nothing can destroy the love amother feels towards her child. She called me imme-diately that night crying that of course she acceptsme with or without hijab; it doesn't matter as long asit makes me happy.

    So never lose hope in anything and put your fulltrust in Allah because He is the Most Powerful andthe All-Knowing.

    If you keep asking Him and you're sincere in yoursupplication, Insha' Allah He'll always be there foryou!

One fine evening, just before the Ramadan herfathers elder brother visited them. He was affec-tionately called Hajji-Abba by Maryam and otherkids in the family. Hajji-Abba enjoyed a lot of re-spect and at times dominated the whole clan. Whenhe learned that Maryam was about to fast, he forcedher parents saying that do not allow Maryam to fastthis Ramadan as she is young.

    Eventually, the month of Ramadan arrived to whichMaryam was eagerly looking forward for more thana year. In the previous Ramadan she used to get upalmost every day for the Suhoor (the pre-dawnmeal). She used to eat well along with her brotherand parents hoping to keep fast. Her parents would

    request her to have lunch if not the breakfast. Heparents had assured her that the half-day exercise ofnot eating will prepare her to fast completely. Theprevious Ramadan Maryam had attended the Roza-Rakhai (also called the Roza Khushai is a function tomark the first fast of a person) of several of herclassmates. But alas!!! All the preparations and ea-gerness are yet to be materialized into her first fast.Thanks to the domination of Hajji-Abba.

    The funny thing in the episode is that elders at timesare overprotective and consequently, delay the activ-ities of children whom they love; fasting and schooladmissions are prime examples of the delayed activi-ties.

    I am an admirer of all things Turkish. I have fondmemories of a few days spent in Turkey, exploringits rich tapestry of history and heritage, especiallyin Istanbul. I have yet to come across a more fasci-nating city. Muslims in the subcontinent sharestrong cultural and historical ties with Turkeythanks to the long Muslim and Mughal rule inIndia. The founder of Mughal dynasty Babar wasof Turkish stock and wrote his fine memoirs,Tuzk-e-Babri, in the language that came naturallyto him Turkish.

    Why are we talking about Turkey though? Withthe 100th anniversary of the Armenian genocideapproaching (April 24), this seems to be open sea-son on Turkey. This week, an angry Ankara sum-moned the Vatican ambassador and recalled itsown to register its protest after Pope Francis ut-tered the G word to describe the Armeniantragedy.

    The first genocide of the 20th century struck Ar-menian people, said the pontiff during a mass inSt. Peters Basilica to mark the centenary of thetragedy in which a million Armenians are said tohave perished at the hands of the Ottoman army ofcourse.

    Turkey however rejects the charge arguing thatthousands of Turks died as well in civil strife whenArmenians rose up against the Ottoman rulers andsided with the Russian and Western forces. Ankaraargues that hundreds of thousands of Muslim be-sides Armenians were killed in conflicts that en-gulfed the eastern Ottoman Empire during WWI.

    President RecepTayyip Erdogan responded angrilyto popes comments on Tuesday: We will notallow historical incidents to be taken out of theirgenuine context, and be used as a tool to campaignagainst our country. I condemn the pope andwould like to warn him not to make similar mis-takes again.

    On Wednesday, the European Parliament joinedPope Francis in urging Turkey to recognize the1915 events as genocide, prompting another re-buke from Ankara. Turkey baulks at attempts toput the Ottomans in the same category as NaziGermany and a string of dictators from Stalin toPol Pot.

    Some 20 nations however recognize the 1915killings as genocide. In 2008 Barack Obama con-demned them as such although in 2009 as presi-dent he was more circumspect in his speechcommemorating the tragedy: My interest remainsthe achievement of a full, frank and just acknowl-edgment of the facts. The best way to advance thatgoal right now is for the Armenian and Turkishpeople to address the facts of the past as a part oftheir efforts to move forward.

    Exactly! The two sides need to move on and itcannot happen without Turkey acknowledging thepast. Excesses may have indeed been committedby a dying empire, desperately trying to hold on toits fast slipping dominions. Confronted with theRussian aggression and combined onslaught ofEuropean powers, the receding Ottoman Empirehad been fighting for its survival.

    The Battle of Gallipoli saw the entire West, includ-ing forces from as far as Australia, ganged upagainst the worlds only surviving Muslim empire,eventually dismembering it into bits and pieces.And like all empires under siege, the Ottomantroops were guilty of excesses in Armenia, just asthey had been in other parts of the crumblingcaliphate. And it is about time modern Turkey ac-knowledged it. There is no point in living in denialabout it.But while what happened in Armenia was trulyhorrific, was it a coldblooded and calculated geno-cide along the lines of Jewish Holocaust at thehands of Nazis, the Rwandan genocide and theethnic cleansing of Balkan Muslims at the handsof Serbs in 1990s?

    The Armenians may have borne the Ottomanwrath for siding with the invaders but were theypicked and eliminated for what they were and be-lieved in as had been the case with Jews and Mus-lims in the Balkans?

    If it is any consolation, the Ottomans werent anyless brutal in dealing with the seditious subjects inMuslim lands. The Egyptian soldiery was dis-patched to deal firmly with the rebellious Arabs.So the attempt by Pope Francis to give this wholeissue a religious overtone comparing it with Chris-tians fleeing oppression at the hands of IS is ab-surd. Equally over the top has been Turkeysreaction to the pontiffs comments.

    Whatever the historical circumstances, what hap-pened in 1915 resulting in the loss of hundreds ofthousands of innocent lives was unfortunate andunconscionable and deserves to be condemned instrongest terms.

    War crimes and crimes against humanity areamong the gravest crimes in international law andthey are to be dealt with as such no matter who thevictims and their tormentors are. Martin LutherKing rightly argued that injustice anywhere is athreat to justice everywhere.

    More often than not though, its not genuine hu-manitarian concerns but realpolitik and hypocrisythat dictate such denunciations. We are selective inour collective outrage and choosing our victims.So has been the case with the Armenian tragedy. Ithas become an annual ritual for Western politi-cians and media to beat Ankara with this big stick.

    To be fair to Turkey, in the past few years it hasgone out of its way to reach out to its neighbors,including Armenia and Greece, in an attempt toheal the past. Erdogan surprised everyone, includ-ing his own people, in 2009 when he acknowl-edged Turkeys troubled past: Those withdifferent ethnic identities were expelled from ourcountry. This indeed was the consequence of a fas-cist approach.

    In the same year, in what came to be known as thesoccer diplomacy he famously invited ArmenianPresident Serge Sarkisian to Turkey to watch a

    football match between their national teams. Lastyear, Erdogan sincerely apologized and offeredcondolences for the loss of hundreds of thousandsof Armenian lives in 1915, something unimagin-able for many Turkish politicians. So here is a na-tion that has had the courage to own up to its past.

    On the other hand, those rushing to condemn andburn Turkey at the stake hardly come acrosssmelling of roses. Who can feign ignorance of Eu-ropes own illustrious past in the last three cen-turies? Almost every single European power onceboasted of and benefited from its rich colonies inAfrica, Asia and Americas.

    Besides raping and denuding Africa of its fabledriches, they stole its most precious resource by en-slaving millions of its people and selling them likecattle around the world. Dont we know howAmericas and Australia were won for the West,nearly wiping out their indigenous populations?Thousands were hanged in India when it rose inrevolt against the empire in 1857.

    In the last century alone, millions were killed inthe Philippines, Korea, Japan, Vietnam and Cam-bodia, as part of the colonial project. Tens of thou-sands of Palestinians have been killed and millionsdriven from their homes after their country wasgenerously gifted away to European Jews.

    We have seen more than a million people killed inIraq and Afghanistan in the last one decade aloneas part of Western wars, not to mention the chaosunleashed across the Muslim world. Who will ac-count for all these crimes? How would the Euro-pean Parliament describe what some of its memberstates visited on their former colonies?The Pope is right in cautioning humanity againstforgetting the senseless slaughter of Armenians100 years ago. But while doing so, lets also sparea thought for millions of victims of Western warsand historical wrongs. Selective memory, like se-lective justice, does more harm than good. Withoutacknowledgement, there is no reconciliation or re-demption.

    The very First National Urdu Science Con-gress, was organized by the Anjuman Farogh-e-Science (Organisation for SciencePromotion, Delhi), at Zakir Husain Delhi College,Delhi, India during 20-21 March 2015. The inaugu-ral session was presided by Dr. Khwaja Mohd. Ekra-muddin who is the Director of the National Councilfor Promotion of Urdu Language (NCPUL,http://www.urducouncil.nic.in/). This very firstevent had over a hundred delegates from across thenation with over twenty-five presentations. The con-ference had successfully attracted scientists;renowned scholars of Arabic Urdu and Persian lan-guages; educators; writers; poets; historians; headsof institutions; science reporters and Islamic schol-ars.

    Science Congresses have been around over a centuryand play an important role in enabling science com-munication and collaboration across the scientificcommunity. The Indian Science Congress Associa-tion (ISCA, http://www.sciencecongress.nic.in/) is apremier scientific organisation of India with head-quarters at Kolkata, West Bengal. The associationstarted in the year 1914 in Kolkata and it meets an-nually in the first week of January every year. TheIndian Science Congress Association owes its originto the foresight and initiative of two BritishChemists, namely, Professor J.L. Simonsen and Pro-fessor P.S. MacMahon. It was modeled after thesuccessful British Association for the Advancementof Science. Today, ISCA has a membership strengthof more than 30,000 scientists. The 102nd Indian

    Science Congress was held during 3-7 January 2015in University of Mumbai (http://www.isc102.in/).The long tradition and the grand success of the In-dian Science Congress have inspired other initiativessuch as the National Children's Science Congress(NCSC, http://www.ncstc-network.org/). The Na-

    tional Childrens Science Congress provides the chil-dren of 10 to 17 years from all over the country aunique opportunity to use their scientific tempera-ment and knowledge to make their own dreamscome true. The program was initiated in 1993, withthe following objectives. It provides a forum to theyoung scientists. NCSC is held annually from De-cember 27-31. After a scrutiny at district and statelevels, about 500 children take part in this five daylong deliberations and fun-filled science activities(http://www.ncstc-network.org/).

    The first Urdu Science Congress aimed to fostercommunication between scientists and researchersinterested in presenting their works in Urdu lan-guage. The Conference covered the following top-ics:

    1.The Problem of Teaching Science in Urdu MediumSchools 2.General Understanding of Scientific Literature inUrdu 3.Environment and Scientific Literature 4.Scientific Experiments in Urdu 5.Teaching and Learning of Science in Madrasas 6.Modern Medical Knowledge and Scientific Litera-ture 7.Islam and Science

    The conference had a very rich programme includ-ing: keynote talks by renowned speakers and oralpresentations. A brief documentary with the titleMuslim Heritage in our World was also screened.

    At the end of the two day Congress, there were sev-eral recommendations. The first and foremost rec-ommendation was to recognize and give credit to theplace of Urdu in the Indian society. It is to be re-called that the Urdu is the official language of fiveIndian states (Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Telan-gana, Jammu and Kashmir). It is to be noted thatUrdu along with intelligible sister language Hindithe percentage of native Hindustani (Hindi-Urdu)speakers becomes 50% of India's total population. Itwas recom-mended that thebasic educationof childrenshould be done intheir mothertongue. It wasfurther said thatin the UrduMedium
