Our Uncle Ghafoor is quite a character. You ask him time, hewill tell you how to repair your clock. You tell him how hot theday has been ‘ and he will give you temperatures from SwissAlps to Srinagar and shower curses for the Indian weather.Never mind, the same words are repeated when the rains ar-rive, turning Indian roads into gutters and then you ‘d betterstop listening to worse than gutter foul mouth of our UncleGhafoor. So it’s an amusement par excellence to lend an ear tohim, when the debate about Modi or Rahul begins seeping inevery nook and corner of our great country and our chai cen-tres. At these old social media forums, our men solve nationaland international problems sipping cups after cups of steamychai. Our Ghafoor uncle speaks with authority ,as though ManMohan had spoken to him last night, briefing him about all theimportant stuff from 3 G notes to Gursharan quotes.[ By theway, will you all ,please stop laughing at my mention of ManMohan 's speaking abilities? The Sardar does speak, i swear!]So when talk about Rahul/Modi and who will become India kaPrime Minister , orBharat Varsh ka Pradhan Mantri is gatheringheat and dust ; our Ghafoor uncle becomes interesting.Rahul or Modi…who among them who among them? What thehell of a difference would it make, you idiots? But both have one problem in common. And before Mishra uncle could wipe out his betel spittle ; hishand was raised hand Modi style,Any of these two become prime ministers, India won’t be hav-ing a first lady. He looked solemn. We will have to get them married first, he declared. WhenShaukat chacha of the next mohalla failed to suppress hissnorty chuckles; he got admonished for his Zaleel Harkat ; it isuncle Ghafoor’s pet word.Who needs a First lady? The first Prime Minister didn’t have one!Shoukat spoke his mind nevertheless. You forget Lady Mountbatten, Mishra ji gave a hearty laugh. What the hell that Lady Mountbatten has got to do with it? PoorUncle Ghafoor had read history only from his school text books. But Shaukat, shouted, Like your Vajpayee was a bachelor!Mishra ji murmured something ,must be his choicest abuse. As the chai crowd now was clearly divided into two, one voicearose but corruption is the main issue Uncle Ghafoor,Corruption, he minced his much used [and abused] denturecum teeth.. Go, and ask Anna Hazare how much…Anna Hazare is a bachelor too! This was Bakha, the waiter at the chai shop who served youquick, if you addressed him as an attendant. Now the chai shop was cracking with laughter. But why theheck is a first lady needed? Someone thought aloud. UncleGhafoor held forth, PMs look better with their spouses. Don’t

Mishra ji roared. But Mishra I am telling, whowould take care of Rashtrap-ati Bhavan? Ghafoor Uncle‘sGK book was as empty as hisbald head.Just like President A PJ Abdul-kalam, who did without a wife.Bakha again. The chit-chat at the pan-shopwent on.And Rahul’s dulhaniya won’tbe from Amethi?Mummy ji Italy se layein giRahul Baba ki dulhan!Mumma’s boy!Shoukat and Mishra nowcame quite close to a brawlbut the situation was takenunder control. For Pheku , an Americanwould be the best bet, wife kesath visa free!Killing two birds with onestone. Ghafoor uncle saidsatisfyingly, always a connois-seur of proverbs.Bonus: As a wife is betterequipped at catching her hus-band’s lies, we can hope foran end [ or control over] toFeku’s FekuismsSo while everyone is in theRahul Vs Modi debate,Ghafoor uncle, the sage oldman is thinking of the manyproblems India might face inthe absence of a fine first lady.Jai ho!

United States of America hastwo major political parties –The Democrats and The Re-publicans hold the reins ofthe American Congress. De-mocrats seem to be peace-loving people, a reason whyAmerica's middle class andworking class support them.Republicans on the otherhand are mostly the party ofthe richest. The richest busi-nessmen in America supportthe Republicans. Republi-cans seem to be maintainvery close terms with theAmerican warlords. When-ever America has a Republi-can President, the probabilityof the war rises. I would like totake you back to the 90'swhen the Gulf War hap-pened. The mayhem startedwhen Iraq invaded Kuwaiton 2nd August 1990 claimingKuwait as a part of Iraq. Thefirst to jump on the band-wagon, as saviours of Kuwait, was none other than theUnited States of America.America has no love forKuwait, but has enormous

love for the Kuwaiti oil. Iraqhad to face the wrath ofAmerica, after a long span offriendship with them. WhenIraq was a Soviet ally, Ameri-can’s dislike was quite natu-ral; however, the sudden fallfrom friendly grace whenthey were counted as astooge of America is beyondnormal comprehension. DidUSA have issues with Iraq'spositions on Israel and Pales-tine. Iraq was vocal abouttheir disapproval of peaceprocess between Egypt andIsrael. Kuwait and Saudi Ara-bia were over-producing oil,and Iraq condemned it. Iraqwas projected as anti to thepro-American Gulf countries.Kuwait and Saudi Arabiahad the blessings of USA andthey were producing moreoil than the OPEC-allocatedquotas. George Bush Sr. wasthe President of USA at thattime. USA was trying to findan excuse to attack Iraq.Iraq was already suffering anyearly loss of 7 billion dollarsdue to the Iran-Iraq war,

which is considered as astrategic ploy to weakenthese two oil-rich nationsemerging as regional leadersin education and technol-ogy. Government in Iraq wasalready struggling to coverthe basic costs. No episodecould have served as a bet-ter excuse than the Kuwaitepisode; Iraq buckled downto America's diktat. They hadno option except acceptingwhat America wanted.America threw Iraq intooblivion and this led Iraq tobow down to America'swishes. With respect to Iraq’s “inva-sion” of Kuwait, they perhapshad no other choice exceptdoing something insane todraw the outer world’s atten-tion towards America's grow-ing intervention in the region(like favouring over-produc-tion of oil by some countries, and bullying others not to dothe same). Now just have alook of the actions taken bythe USA. When Iraq invadedKuwait, American govern-

ment led by President George Bush Sr whobelonged to the Republican party deployedUS forces into Saudi Arabia. What peevedme was the primary action taken by the USgovernment. Kuwait was invaded but Amer-ica made sure that their favourite oil-richcountry remained unscathed from any issues.Saudi Arabia paid around 36 billion dollars ofthe total 60 billion dollars cost to USA. Amer-ica always keeps the Gulf countries under itsclutch to make sure that the money and oilkeep flowing towards America. It was norocket science to know who would win theGulf War in 1991. America had allies in theform of the richest Arabs and Israel; andAmerica itself was the powerhouse. GeorgeBush Sr. won the war but Saddam Hussainwon the heart of the world, and proved tothe world that America was unfair in its deal-ings with countries of the region. George BushSr. remained in power till 1993. Bill Clinton whowas a democrat came to power in 1993 andthe world was peaceful place for 8 years tillGeorge Bush came into power. Bush familywere always critical of Iraq, and Bush Jr.found another excuse to invade them. Amer-ica created a story from nowhere and at-tacked and demolished Iraq. Americabecame the God of the world. Their growinginterference in the world politics and their un-fair dealing of Iraq and Saddam Hussainfaced much criticism. Like a masala movie,Bush Jr. used the vulnerability of Saddam Hus-sain to capture Iraq’s resources. Bush Sr. andBush Jr. represent the Republican mindset. The atmosphere created by the Bush regime(that America is under attack) led the peopleto panic, and before they could understandthe filthy desire of Republican Bush, Americawent ahead with “War against Terror”. Bushdesire to help the American warlords cost 3trillion dollars to America and forced Americaand the world into recession. Bush and theAmerican warlords benefitted from the warbut the innocent American people sufferedmajor losses. The whole world and Americaare still trying to get rid of the recession im-posed upon them. It did not take long for thepeople of America to realise their mistake ofempowering the Republicans. Americanpeople finally voted for a change and saw apromising leader in Barack Obama, a trueDemocrat.

I was speaking to a young man and throughthe conversation I heard him say, “I don’tmake du`aa’ anymore.”I asked him, “Why not?” and he replied, “Imade du`aa’ for some things and I never gotthem so I just gave up!”I asked him if he was happy in his life, he said,“Not really.” Then I asked him if he felt heneeded the mercy of Allah in his life, and atthat he replied very enthusiastically, “Ofcourse I do!”Now this made me think very deeply aboutsome things in life. Is it right that we (mankindin general) go on expecting things from ourCreator while we sit down passively, mostlyjust observing life and hardly doing anythingfor anyone else unless it somehow fits in withour scheme of things? Is it right if a kid wants something from hismum and dad but he is doing and sayingthings they do not like, going out withouttheir permission, dressing in an unacceptableway, not pulling his weight around the house, and so on, then he just come right out andask for money, or new clothes, or whatever, and then grumble when they refuse, andperhaps adding how unfair life is and howvery unreasonable they are?Let’s look at it another way. Imagine you hadsomeone you called your friend but this per-son spoke badly about you behind yourback and only came hanging around whenhe wanted something—then one day hecomes to you and asks a big favor. Most

likely you would tell him to forget it and sim-ply ignore him if he started complaining. So we all acknowledge that on the humanlevel life is a matter of give-and-take; it’s amatter of rights and responsibilities. What about your relation with your Creator? Is it right that we enjoy the bounty of this mar-velous creation and, even though everythingwas created for the benefit of man, we goahead and make use of things for our ownbenefit and comfort without thinking of oth-ers?Is it right to fail to give others their rights andexpect our rights, and often fail to take careof the creation that Allah provided for us?How often do you use things that you knowwill pollute the environment—the same envi-ronment that Allah created for you?We are dropping litter, using chemicals, andgenerally tapping into the wasteful and ex-cessive way of life in the modern world, with-out really thinking seriously about ourresponsibility to yourself, those around us, theworld, and our Creator. Then when we get sick because of the pol-luted and chemical-filled environment, youturn in desperation to the Lord of all askingfor help and healing. Then as soon as we arewell again, you go back to the old habits ofmisusing, if not destroying, the environment. How Merciful Allah is! Even though you keepmaking the same mistakes; even though youmisuse yourself, others, and the world aroundyou, He still comes to your aid! He, theAlmighty, gives you enough opportunity to

change, to see the errors of your ways andto make a fresh start.Have you ever noticed how your body healsas does the environment? So where is yourplace in all this?A person can drink alcohol and abuse hisbody until he gets liver disease—and thenblame fate! Likewise a person could neglectthe rights of his family and even abuse themwhen he is in the prime of his life and filledwith strength, but when he gets old and is leftalone and feeling lonely, he curses life andcomplains how difficult life is! Do you findthat you sometimes do things like this?Have you ever passed by a river that is pol-luted and said how awful it is that “mankind”destroys nature? But then haven’t you evertipped chemicals down the sink that end upin the river system, and somewhere along theline, contributed to this awful state of pollu-tion?What I want to say is that you have to be will-ing to take your responsibilities seriously. Thefirst step is to realize that Allah has calledupon mankind to be the caretakers of thisworld.Allah the Almighty said:

{You are the best of peoples ever raised upfor mankind; you enjoin what is good, andforbid what is wrong and you believe inAllah…} (Aal-`Imran 3:110)

We have to understand that the nature ofthis life is not just to make money and live acomfortable life of ease. We have to be will-ing to give: to give to those around us, ourfamily and friends and our communities; toparticipate in the voice of society that callsfor justice; to speak out against violationsagainst mankind and the earth. When toxic waste is dumped, what do youdo? When logging companies are allowedto destroy one of the last remaining rain-forests on earth, what do you do? Whenpeople are abused and oppressed, what doyou do? If your answer is “nothing.” Then youshould think again. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said:

“Whoever, among you, sees somethingabominable should rectify it with his hand;and if he has not strength enough to do so,

then he should do it with his tongue; and if hehas not strength enough to do it, (even) thenhe should (hate it) in his heart, and that is theleast of Faith. “(Muslim)

Allah created us to worship Him, and a partof that worship is to keep within His bound-aries—the rules He has provided us with, knowing full well that whatever He has or-dered us to keep away from is in fact bad forus. So imagine a person who is selfish, stubborn, and harsh. He couldn’t care less about theeffects of dumping their factory’s toxic wasteinto any place convenient (for them). Helives his life trying to make more and moremoney and gathering up material wealth; hedoesn’t really care whose head he steps onto get up the social ladder, and basically hedoesn’t really care about anyone excepthimself. If such a person prays to the Creatorof all—should he expect his du`aa’ to be an-swered? Listen to what the Prophet (peaceand blessings be upon him) said about this:

"Allah the Almighty is good and accepts onlythat which is good. Allah has commandedthe Faithful to do that which He commandedthe Messengers, as He Almighty has said:{O ye Messengers! Eat of the good things, and do right. } (Al-Mu’minun 23:51)

And Allah the Almighty has said,

{O ye who believe! Eat of the good thingswherewith We have provided you. } (Al-Baqarah 2:172)

Then he mentioned the case of a man who, having journeyed far, is disheveled anddusty and who spreads out his hands to thesky saying: O Lord! O Lord! While his food isunlawful, his drink unlawful, his clothing un-lawful, and he is nourished unlawfully, so howcan he be answered? " (Muslim)

Then what about the person who isn’t as cor-rupt as the above-mentioned person, but inhis own way demonstrates weakness andapathy. Imagine someone who stops trying everytime things get difficult; someone who takeson the habit of saying “I couldn’t be both-

Dear brothers and sisters, Assalamu Alaikum.Regular readers must be aware that lastnight I posted my reflections on the so-callednews of Angola banning Islam.

This I did after reading the news in this popu-lar Islamic website [http://www.onislam.net/]and also going through this newsmagazine[http://indiatoday.intoday.in/].

I didn’t verify about the authenticity of this‘news’ as the scholars’ response didn’t leaveany room for any doubt to creep in my mind. To my surprise, this morning Iread the denial statement is-sued by Angolan Embassyofficial in US, and was quiteembarrassed for postingsuch a ‘news’. I even re-ceived an e-mail from abrother which is in fact thestatement coming from MuftiIsmail Menk that confirms thedenial of the Embassy offi-cial.

Following is the statement is-sued by Mufti Ismail Menk, a popular and areliable scholar of repute:

“Upon verification from Angolan scholars itwas found that the story of Islam beingbanned in Angola is completely fabricated.Sadly, the demolition of all structures thatwere built without proper documentation, planning, procedure etc was carried out. Thishappened to include some religious struc-tures too, amongst them a Masjid. Interest-ingly the picture doing its rounds is not evenfrom Angola but the Middle East.

This happened quite some time back but isbeing carried mischievously by some mediahouses.

It is important that Muslims only build Masaa-jid after proper approvals etc to avoid this. Ithas happened in other countries before. Please clarify the truth with those who havebecome emotional about the so called ban-ning of Islam in Angola.

May Allah Almighty grant us a lesson andsafeguard the Deen. AameenWassalaamu alaykum warahmatullahiwabarakaatuh”.

So I deleted the previous post saying that thenews was false.

To conclude, I would like tomention few points:

1. The absence and non-ex-istence of any reliable inter-national news agencyamong Muslims – despite thefact that we have more than50 Muslim countries in theworld – is a cause of graveconcern.

2. Most of the times we arebeing fooled by the media

hype and tend to lose our balance in gettingto know what is what. I still I do not under-stand the scholars’ response!! Wal’laahu‘Alam!

3. I am in media field since more than 20years and have blogging experience ofabout five years. This is the first time I got anegg on my face that I really feel sorry about.

4. In this bitter episode, we have two basiclessons to learn:

a. As Allah says in Surah al Hujuraat[http://tanzil.net/#49:6] we need to verify thenews before passing on.

have done.” (Surah al Hujuraat 49: 6)

b. Once bitten, twice shy. Our gloriousProphet sal-lal-laahu-alaihi-wa-sallam puts itbeautifully:

” A believer is not bitten from the same holetwice.”

This Hadith means that while it is possible fora believer to suffer a bite by a snake or a sim-ilar creature because he is taken unaware, the same thing should not be allowed tohappen twice. He should always be carefulso that he would not commit the same mis-take, or be in the same situation of overlook-ing real danger, more than once.

May Allah forgive us of our sins and guide uson the Right Path. Aameen.Sal-lal-laahu-’Ala Muhammad, Sal-lal-laahu‘Alaihi wa-sallam.Thank you for reading this post. Hope you un-derstand the problem.Jazakallaahu Khayra.

One of the golden pages from the Islamichistory, which builds our attitude in facingcrises, reads: After the Prophet (pbuh) re-turned from the Battle of Khandaq, one ofthe hardest battles, that pitted the Muslimsbefore a huge collection of the enemies, heremoved his battle armor to rest, and AngelJibraeel appeared and said, “O Prophet ofAllah! I have not yet removed my armor andyou removed it so early! We have to movetowards Banu Quraiza.”

Establishing Islam means attending one crisisafter another, without getting exhausted.Crises can be a test. Hardships and crises inpersonal life and collective life make a be-liever firm and stronger. Among the best out-comes of crises, is that he emerges out withmore taqwa and tawakkul, because he hasexperienced the help of Allah in solving it.Remember: The help of Allah is near andmany a times it comes when you see no op-tions yet cling to the only option that is Allah, with patience and preference.

Study the case of Moosa (a.s.), when he waschased by the mighty Pharaoh and his entirearmy, he stood at the bank of the river facingthe fast flowing water and no boats to sailthem across and no arms to fight back theenemies. At that time even his own peopleblamed him, "Moosa, we are trapped," asthe Qur'an quotes them. What did Moosa(a.s) say? Read in Surah Qasas, Surah Ar'af,and Surah Taha.

The Noble Prophet (pbuh) did not say "Heywait! I have this miraculous stick with me andI will whiz it on the water or at the enemy."Rather he replied, "Allah is with me." It wasonly after Allah said, "Moosa hit the waterwith your stick." Moosa (a.s.) looked at theoption, till then it was only a stick. Today, formany of us, our bank balances, our influen-

tial contacts in the government offices andour relatives are our first options before weturn to Allah. Infact they are the weakest op-tion if approached without approachingAllah. The Sahih Hadith reminds us: "Turn toAllah's help even if the sole of your shoe istorn." Such small issues but refer to Allah! Why? Just to program our minds to refer toAllah regularly and not only during big emer-gencies. For many of us Allah is the last op-tion, but if you refer to the above two casesAllah is the only option, without His com-mand even the sources cannot cause abenefit to you.

Faith happens to be the first casualty of criseswhen faced by many Muslims. They rush

What will soften the hearts

Question: If a person has with him hardness in his heart, then what are affairs that will soften the heart?

Al-'Allamah Salih al-Fawzan: There is nothing better ormore necessary (for softening the heart) than the NobleQur.aan. It is what will soften the hearts. Allah - the Exalted and Sublime - said:

"Those who believed (in the Oneness of Allah – IslamicMonotheism), and whose hearts find rest in the remem-brance of Allah, verily, in the remembrance of Allah dohearts find rest." [Surah al-Rad 13:28].

So the Qur.aan is what will soften the hearts, which if Allahwere to reveal it on a mountain, you would surely haveseen it humbling itself and rending asunder by the fear ofAllah;

"Had We sent down this Qur.aan on a mountain, youwould surely have seen it humbling itself and rent asunderby the fear of Allah." [Soorah al-Hashr 59:21]

Likewise sitting with the righteous and listening to TheQur.aan, (listening) to admonitions and reminders - this iswhat will soften the hearts.

everywhere, from graves ofdead saints to taweez(Tameema) sellers, they losepatience and many even giveup their regular prayers. If youstudy Surah Yusuf, when thebrothers of Yusuf (a.s.) felt sorryabout their acts, what did theirfather Yaqub say? Do not de-spair the mercy of Allah, in-deed it is kufr to despair themercy of Allah.

The most important outcomeof crises is our attitude towardsit. Even in wars, all the warriorsmay not be able to come outsuccessful like James Bondsand Rambo just because weare in an age of movies TV se-rials; we have begun to wishthat melodramas are alwaysthe best end of crises. Musaibbin Umair (r.a.) was amongthe best dressed young manof Makkah, but he had toleave all the luxury when heparted from his paganmother. He died in Uhud andhis shroud was too short tocover him completely.

Study the tragedy of Uthman(r.a). I By Asma Anjum IThe stage was set, the scene was unique ifnot rare; one was a Prime Minister and theother an aspirant. They were discussing aman who was the Sardar [grand leader] ofhis times. The PM aspirant bluffed it as always, and the Sardar PM boxed him into his place.Yes, we are talking about Manmohan Singhand Modi spar about Sardar Patel. After PMaspirant’s desperate attempt to usurp theSardar legacy, the PM is desperate to showhow secular Sardar was.

Hello you Guys, your slip is showing!

My quest is not just to know how secular Sar-dar Patel was, but to try to probe how com-munal he was, if he was? SardarVallabhbhai Patel has left behind a mixedlegacy. Discretion is needed while followingthe lessons taught by the heroes of our his-tory.

The Iron Man Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel

Sardar Patel’s ability of taking the right [andtough] decisions at the right time, made him

the Iron Man, a virtue lacking in today’s vote-bank bound leaders. Mountbattenwhile dis-paraging Gandhi’s plan of spending the restof his life in Pakistan described him as theonly man who has his feet firmly on theground. Formidable Vallabhbhai Patel was aman with a sense of reality; reality which-could hurt but nevertheless had to be faced. He was said to have complete and firm con-trol over the organization of his party (Con-gress) and became the first deputy PrimeMinister and Home Minister of the newlyfreed India. J B Kriplani counts, shrewdness, determination, administrative capacity, andthe ability to take definite decisions at all im-portant occasions, as some of his chief char-acteristics. He also notes that Sardar couldnot bear opposition and he saw to it thatthose who opposed him had to pay theprice. Later in the day, Mountbattenchanged his view and called him as hysteri-cal as the rest of the Congress Leaders. Thishappened due to a change in Patel’sstance about CHT, where he wrote statingthat if it were imposed in East Bengal, thepeople would be justified in resisting thisaward by force and the Central government

would be bound to supportthem.

Among the feathers in thePatel cap are counted themerger of more than 500princely states into the newlyformed Union of India. 550states out of 560 had Hindukings ruling over Hindu popu-lace, their blending camecomparatively easier with apromise that their richeswould not get affected. Butthe real brain behind this issaid to be V.P.Menon whowas amongst the personalstaff of Mountbatten, andoften described as closer toSardar Patel. Formidable Sar-dar’s approach was oftenmixed. Even the British offi-cials accepted that theycouldn’t have done it with-out or better than him. Whenthe ruler of Manipur resistedthe full integration into theUnion, Patel thought outaloud, Isn’t there a brigadierin Shillong? After that it wasonly a matter of days thatthis problem was solved. Itwas for his steely resolve thatthe Union of India is what wesee today. This steely touchand unambiguous standmight be missed in the daysof Telangana turmoils.

Operation Polo or, Action’the annexation of Hyder-abad from the State ofNizam and Junagarh, bothwith Muslim rulers also go tohis credit. Patel was the chiefarchitect of both the annex-ations, especially the latter, inwhich thousands of Muslimslost their lives. It was SardarPatel who appointed Gen-eral Choudhary as army incharge and K.M.Munshi asregent, known for his strong

Muslim bias who accom-plished the task. Former PMAspirant Mr. L.K. Advani put abombshell recently by claim-ing that Nehru had openlycalled Patel, a communalistwhen he heard his plansabout Hyderabad.

Sardar Patel and Muslims:

The general impressionabout Sardar Patel is that ofbeing anti-Muslim. The sec-ond last Viceroy of India LordWavell [1944-47] dubs him as‘communal and anti-Mus-lim’. Wavell thought of SardarPatel as the only one of thecongressmen capable ofstanding up to Gandhi.Madhav Godbole formerUnion Home secretary in hisbook, The Holocaust of In-dian Partition: An Inquest ,explains that, Patel’s imageas a communalist was, in nosmall measure , due to hisopenness and strong con-demnation of Muslim com-munalism. It is obvious thatcommunalism whether Hinduor Muslim needs to be con-demned. But our PM aspi-rants would do better tomake a note of how Pateldid everything to protectNizamuddin Dargah in Delhiwith special orders to avoidits desecration, during thebloody September of 1947.

His unannounced visit toNizamuddin was a clear indi-cation that he meant busi-ness; business of running hiscountry in a saner, safer way. Here I recall complete de-struction of the first Urdu poetWali Gujarati’s mazar inAhmedabad, all in a night! The mazar[tomb] of the pio-neer Gujarati Ghazal writerand poet, Wali Gujarati waslocated right outside the Po-lice Commissioner’s Office. Itwas destroyed and then lev-elled, with concrete pouredfor vehicles to move over it.This incident occurred in2002. Modi never said a wordin condemnation. This is incontrast with Sardar Patelprotecting the tomb of Niza-mmuddin Aulia.

Sardar Patel was also againstdivision of army on commu-nal lines, where soldiers wereasked to choose India orPakistan, calling it the surestway to ensure a civil war. Also, during the same periodhe had allowed Sikhs to carrytheir kirpans; going againstNehru, who wanted a ban.As his feet were firmlyplanted on the ground, hehad the moral courage totake a step backward when-ever the situation demandedof him. People suspectedPatel of opposing the Nehru-Liaquat pact but H.V.R Iyen-gar rejects it. To explain this,Iyengar narrates how Pateldespite his impregnable wayof dealing with issues, used toretract from an earlierstance, if he found he was inthe wrong. Patel was dis-turbed due to the massacresof Hindus in East Pakistanwhich, led to repercussions inWest Bengal where Muslims

were killed for revenge. Anincident happened whereseveral thousand Muslimshidden in a warehouse of ajute mill, were set alight byHindus. Thousands suc-cumbed in the fire. Iyengarreports Patel telling him ,Iyengar, I am afraid we havelost all moral authority to pro-ceed against East Pakistan .After this, Iyengar professes,Patel fully supported Nehrufor maintaining peace ac-corded in Nehru-Liaquatpact. Will the PM Candidateof BJP ever have thecourage to accept themoral responsibility for 2002?Dr Juzar Bandukwala ,thewidely respected activistand one of the many peoplewe befriended virtually afterGujarat carnage sums it upquite resolutely, Sardar Patelwas a complex man. He wasclose to Gandhi and in thatsense he may be said to benon-communal. But he rep-resented the right wing in theCongress. Relative to Nehru,he was less sympathetic toMuslims. But in the context ofthe RSS/BJP fanatics like Modihe was certainly a liberal.Dr.Bandukwala adds that, itis significant that Sardar Patelbanned RSS, after Gandhiji’sdeath. He also condemnsthe RSS/BJP tendency to ap-propriate our national lead-ers. As luck would have itSardar Patel significantly [orsay innocently] wanted towin over RSS with love! He issupposed to have said,“They love their country .Onlytheir trend of thought is di-verted. They are to be wonover by Congressmen bylove.” Congress’ politics oflast 60 years stands for this, open hatred and hidden

love for RSS. But those whoknow nothing but hatredmay not comprehend thelanguage of love. Dr.Banduk-wala hits the nail right on itshead when he says that,“ Asfar as I understand, the Sar-dar had no close Muslimfriend. The only Muslims heknew well were Jinnah , andthe Congress leadersMaulana Azad and BadshahKhan . There is a vacuum inhis interaction with commonMuslims. This had a negativeeffect in his interactions withMuslims. “

Patel and Pakistan

But it was also Sardar Patelwho moved that resolution inthe constituent assemblythat implied discarding theproposal of separate elec-torates for the Muslims, a cru-cial privilege granted to Dr.Ambedkar. Sardar Patelhad disliked the conse-quences of separate Muslimelectorates, before partition.Indian Muslims paid a heavyprice as a result. He was bluntenough to tell Muslims ,“I respectfully appeal to allbelievers in the two nationtheory to go and enjoy thefruits of their freedom andleave us here in peace.”He had firm belief in a unitedIndia, resolving, What natureand God had intended tobe one on no account canbe split in two for all times. Hetermed the two-nation the-ory, the false doctrine of twonations. Patel himself had anawareness of the criticism ofhis not following Gandhiji, hehad said, “While people talkof our failing to follow Gand-hiji’s teachings, I wish to giveyou an example which I re-

member from his conversa-tion.” He goes on to recordhow happy and proud hefound Gandhiji when the lat-ter heard about the opera-tion in Kashmir by the Indianarmy. It was this formidableleader who was responsibleto airlift troops in Srinagar,Kashmir, under the Britishcommanders.Sardar Patel, also wanted to attack Pak-istan, if possible. He had said,“If all the decisions rested onme, I think I would be in favorof extending this little affair inKashmir to a full scale warwith Pakistan. Let us get itover with once and for alland settle down as a unitedcontinent.”Was it for this, thatGandhiji preferred thecalmer Nehru over him?”

Sardar Patel’s Equation withOther Leaders

His relations with other lead-ers of the time make an inter-esting reading. It is surprisingto know that Moulana Azadis said to have told HumayunKabir, editor of his biography,India Wins Freedom ,that hemade the mistake of choos-ing the wrong candidate forCongress president, had heproposed Patel’s name in-stead of Nehru’s, then, hewould have evolved into aprime minister and wouldhave proved to be a betterone than his closest friendNehru. It has always been amillion dollar question as towhy Mahatma Gandhichose Nehru over Patel. PerryAnderson tries to reply,“Gandhi who had alwayssought to remain on goodterms with the British , hadpicked Nehru as his succes-sor partly on the grounds that

Historical

Page 16: Bakhabar, December 2013

he was culturally equipped (to) get on sowell with them, as Patel or other candidateswere not.”

When someone asked Patel, when he hadsolved the problems of all states and evenperformed the most difficult task of themerger of princely states, why he couldn’tdo the same with Kashmir? Pat came thereply that as Nehru had taken Kashmir as hisown personal and spe-cial case, he couldn’t.He had no qualmterming Nehru’s speechfull of emotional insanity!Nehru had declared thatCongress was free to actas it wished, after agree-ing to the federationprinciple, earlier. Pateloften was found com-plaining of how Nehru’spublic salvos put theparty into difficulty. Theskirmishes between thetwo stalwarts are in com-mon knowledge, withPatel terming Nehru asthe Only Nationalist Mus-lim, which was also a jibeat Moulana Azad anddenominating Raj-gopalachari ashalf aMuslim’. This, certainlygenerated tense mo-ments. But at other timeshe has also talked aboutNehru’s childlike inno-cence, while Jinnah haddesignated him, PeterPan of Indian Politics!

It is a testimony of thegreatness of these twoleaders that they workedtogether for the greatergood of the country. Onmany occasions the twostalwarts Nehru andPatel collaborated, for-getting their personalgrudges, a legacy diffi-cult to follow for the aspi-

rants and the occupants, of the Prime Post ofour country. To their credit goes the law ofPreventive custody; they both were in favorof inducting Dr. Ambedkar of ScheduledCaste Federation Party into Indian cabinet,as they wanted to avoid his formidable al-liance with Jinnah’s ML, while it was Jinnahwho had got Dr. Ambedkar elected fromBengal to the then Constituent Assembly. Both were equal partners in suppressing the

all revealing Sunderlal re-port about HyderabadAction/Annexation wherethousands are believed tohave died. After Patel’sdeath in 1950 Nehru’s po-sition grew stronger andno one in his party or in thecabinet could dare chal-lenge him. He took carenot to appoint any sec-ond deputy PM, after allhe wanted to remain un-challenged till he passedaway in 1964.

The Statue of Unity thetallest in the world, wouldtower over every otherstatue in the world. Thequestion arises should thelegacy of Sardar Pateltoo, be allowed, to towerover those of Nehru andGandhi? Sardar Patelleaves behind a mixedlegacy. Political partiesare trying to play sportwith it, as suited their big-oted purposes. The manwith both his feet firmly onthe ground Sardar Patelshould be watched withheads firmly on our shoul-ders. Discern, select andfollow, should be themantra in following theheroes of history.

I By Amulya Ganguli IIt is difficult to anticipate what may cause apolitician to stumble. When Narendra Modiwas chosen by the Bharatiya Janata Party(BJP) as its prime ministerial candidate, hisonly disadvantage was his anti-minorityimage. It isn't surprising, therefore, that he hasbeen working overtime to refurbish his repu-tation in this respect - short of wearing a skullcap. It is not known whether he has succeeded. But, in the meantime, he has been am-bushed by a trait which cannot be easily rec-tified for it is a part of his personality andbackground. The characteristic is his inatten-tion to historical details.Whether born of carelessness in the draftingof his speeches, or the outcome of his schoolrecord as an "average" student, as one of histeachers in Vadnagar testified, the flaw candivert attention from his message. Howeverimpressive his oration may be, even one "slipof the tongue", as an acolyte has explained,

can spoil the overall effect. But the problem for the BJP, as is evidentfrom the eagerness with which his supportersin the media and elsewhere are coming tohis defence, is that his mistakes are piling up.Modi's first blunder was understandable. Theerroneous claim that Nehru did not attendSardar Patel's funeral was palpably moti-vated by his zeal to paint the first prime min-ister in darker hues than what history portrays, presumably because, according to Modi, hehad usurped the Iron Man's rightful place inthat office. But this was not the only occasion whenModi played fast and loose with history. Hismixing up of two towering personalities of an-cient India - Chandragupta Maurya andChandragupta II of the Gupta dynasty -showed that he was out of his depth whereknowledge of the past was concerned. This deficiency was substantiated by his as-sertion that Alexander was stopped by theGanga. Considering that every schoolboy

knows that the Macedonianconqueror met his match inPorus in Punjab, which is faraway from the Ganga, thefaux pas was inexcusable. Aswas the placing of two cen-tres of learning a thousandmiles apart - Taxila in thenorthwest of the sub-conti-nent and Nalanda in Bihar -in close proximity to one an-other.But perhaps Modi's most dis-turbing howler was telling apublic meeting that ShyamaPrasad Mukherjee diedabroad when he meantShyamji Krishna Varma, a Gu-jarati freedom fighter who isnot very well known outsidethe state. The memory lapse was curi-ous since Modi had goneabroad in 2003 to bring backVarma's ashes and dedi-cated a memorial to him in2010. Although he later apol-ogized for his mistake, themental confusion over thetwo names is odd since thereis nothing common betweenthem except the word"Shyam".Besides, as the founder of theJana Sangh (the BJP's prede-cessor), Mukherjee had amajor presence in saffron his-tory and his name cannoteasily be substituted withsomeone else's, especially bya person who began his po-litical life at an early age as apracharak (preacher) of theRashtriya SwayamsevakSangh (RSS). As a Congressspokesman pointed out, it islike confusing betweenJawaharlal Nehru and ArunNehru. That the BJP is worried bythese blunders is evidentfrom the decision to deploywhat has been described as

"in-house historians" to vet thedraft of Modi's speech be-fore his next major public en-gagement in Bengaluru. Theparty is obviously concernedthat having built up Modi asa larger-than-life figure, itdoesn't want to expose hisfeet of clay. Its worries are probably allthe greater because havingtried to portray Rahul Gandhias "Pappu", or an immature

youth, mainly through thesaffron elements in the cyberworld, a smearing of Modi'simage because of his inade-quate acquaintance withhistory can be politicallydamaging since it will under-mine the he-man's imageamong the intelligentsia. As it is, the Hindutva lobby'sversion of history is quite dif-ferent from what is com-monly accepted in the

academic world - even if thesaffronites dismiss it as a sec-ular distortion. However, an understandingof how the saffron brigadesees the main trends of In-dian history can be gaugedfrom the following passagecirculating in the Internet. Itsays: "what a pathetic coun-try we are.. just ready to getscrewed first by moghuls..then brits.. then both.. thennow another foreigner whohas no interest in the countryand then another half for-eigner...come on folks...wakeup..."This inanity is not very differ-ent from Modi's gaffes orMurli Manohar Joshi's at-tempt to rewrite history, when he was the human re-source development minis-ter, by describing the IndusValley Civilization (3300 to1300 B.C.) as Vedic to assertthat India is the homeland ofAryans, unlike the claim inthe "secular" version that theycame from Iran in 1500 B.C.But there is a slight differ-ence.The execrable taste dis-played by the netizen canbe said to have been repli-cated by Modi when he said- rather tastelessly - that inview of Sonia Gandhi's "ill-ness" (she is reported to havehad cancer), she shouldmake way for the shehzada(prince), or Rahul. Not onlyshould Modi take lessons inhistory but also in good man-ners.

I Umm Ismail I

Some years back my 11 yearold son asked me if I thoughtthere would be a PlayStationin Jannah(Paradise), be-cause really, if there wasn’tgoing to be one, then hedidn’t know if he still wantedto go there. While I was grat-ified to be thought so knowl-edgeable, I was also awarethat my reputation as Ora-cle-In-Chief was now atstake.

So naturally I thought verycarefully about how to re-spond.

His query reminded me ofanother, a few decades ear-lier. I attended Madressah(Is-lamic School) with an olderaunt who graciously con-ceded to teaching me pri-vately in the afternoons afterschool. When I started highschool, she told me I wouldhave to start wearing thehijab soon. Now this was the80’s – South Africa was in thegrip of the last, bloody, graspof institutional apartheid, theRainbow nation hadn’t yetbeen born, and a head-scarfed girl at my school was-n’t an option.

So being 12 and opinion-ated, I asked her why, andwhether I would have towear it at school as well. Iknew of other girls who woreit, then instantly discarded it

at the school gate for the du-ration of the school day, onlyto put it on again when theywent home. She replied thatit would indeed be all rightsince hijab was for one’s pro-tection, and at school girlswere protected (from what, Iwondered!).

If wearing hijab was compul-sory, my teen brain rea-soned, then surely there hadto be a proper reason. I alsoquestioned why would it beok to wear the hijab on oneside of the school gate andunnecessary on the otherside? Silently, I promptly de-cided never to wear hijab -until aeons later, at 17, whenit made perfect sense! When our children questionus about Islamic principles,

ethics or concepts, we oftenfind it difficult to address theirconcerns head-on. We eitherreact with self-righteous in-dignation, or sometimeswe’re just amiably dismissive, while pointedly informingthem about what’s allowedand what’s not.

Our children however, arenot pint-sized, programma-ble versions of adults, whoafter a few basic instructions– pray 5 times daily, learn allyour Surahs(Quranic Verses),and don’t forget the eatingdua (prayer) – will then hap-pily be on their way. Utterlycomplete human beings, en-dowed with a healthy curios-ity and a growing intellect, they need to be engaged, debated with and have their

sometimes misguided views, challenged. Their insecurities, preposterous or profoundhave to be entertained too.The Quran constantly en-courages us to ponder anduse our ‘aql (intellect): “AndWe have certainly left of it asign as clear evidence for apeople who use reason.”(Quran:29:35) and again“And it is He who gives lifeand causes death, and His isthe alternation of the nightand the day. Then will younot reason?” (Quran23:80).Despite this, we consistentlychoose not to heed to seekreasoning, nor do we expectour children to. Indeed weexpect them, ironically, to doas their forefathers didand in-herit the faith we sometimeswear with weary familiarity. Why?

Perhaps it is because we as-sume that wanting to under-stand the essence of a Divineinstruction is to question itsvalidity. Perhaps, more oftenthan not, we ourselves don’tunderstand its logic and wis-dom. But does this have tobe so?

As Hazrat Ali (RA) taught us,and echoed by educationistKen Robinson, we raise ourchildren for a time other thanour own, in fact for a futureas yet, quite undetermined. In order for them to grow intothe Caretakers that AllahSWT intended, their faith mustgrow organically; becausefaith, unlike Granny’s antiquecups, cannot be passeddown to future generations.Their first steps into the worldof meaning and values mustbe infused with the contin-ued appreciation of the Di-

vine Presence. This primalawareness as created be-ings starts with the athaan(call to prayer) in the new-born’s ear, settles in the heartas a fledgling seed, to bedelicately nurtured with loveand patient understanding(and a healthy dose of hu-mour). Not for nothing didthe Messenger of Allah(peace be upon him) spendthe first 13 years in Meccanurturing this seed – its blos-soming is what enabled thatcollective cathartic momentyears later when the Muslimswere ordered to wash thestain of alcohol out of theirlives …. In the words of myteen, how awesome wasthat?

If we want our children to beof those who “strive hard withtheir property and their per-sons” (9:88), who “invite togood and enjoin what is rightand forbid the wrong”(3:104), and whom Allah SWT“will love and who will loveHim” (5:54), we will need toencourage them to find theanswers to their questionsfrom within the Quraan. Letus from the beginning en-courage our children to re-flect on and be amazed bythe universe outside of (andwithin) us and then weaveinto that the Qur’anic ethos. This will enable them to viewand practice Islam with un-derstanding and love ratherthan Islam being viewed assets of mechanical actionsor regurgitation of the versesof the Quraan without pas-sion and affection. There is NO excuse today notto make the effort to edu-cate ourselves. Books, the in-ternet, YouTube, community

classes, all abound. Indeed,it’s our emphatic duty as par-ents to be exemplary in thedesire for authenticity, to“ponder and reflect” to-gether with our children, andto seek out well-researched,thoughtful answers to theirqueries like why exactly arewe here, If Allah SWT is somerciful, why do people suf-fer, what happens to goodatheists, and …. is there aPlayStation in Jannah?

So back to my son. I ex-plained that not havingmade that trip, I obviouslycouldn’t give him anyspecifics, but what I couldsay for sure was that Jannahis where we will be unimagin-ably happy and content. Iasked him to recall his mostsatisfying memory, and tomultiply that by a gazillion(words like gazillion alwaysmake an impact) – and ifthat included a PlayStation, then a version of a PlaySta-tion would be awaiting him.He nodded sagely andnever mentioned it again, satisfied that his motherclearly was the go-to personwhen weighty matters pre-occupied the mind.

He’s 15 now, and the otherday he sheepishly recalledthat incident and exclaimed,“Mum, can you believe I ac-tually thought Jannah wasgoing to be full of PlaySta-tions and games”, and gig-gling mischievously, headded, “now I know it’sgoing to be full of beautifulgirls!” - and disappeared be-fore I could feign shock-hor-ror. Sigh … I suspect the“lower your gaze” talk is al-ready overdue ….

The streets of Madinah narrate the splendidtale of the torchbearers of the pristine faith.Madinah –the Vanguard of Islamic empire, the home of Al Ansaar-The helpers of Islam. The city is an eminent observer of the pro-gressive evolution of Islam. The streets, thedate palms, the grapevine orchards recountIslamic history with meticulous accuracy. An-ecdotes are many, some elative and eu-phoric, such as the Rashidun Conquest of theLevant and the Sassanid empire, others sor-did and remorseful, such as the brutal assas-sination of the third caliph Uthman bin Affan. The evanescing metaphors of the coldblooded murder of the caliph plunge thesoul into deep strata of grief and anguish. With a heavy heart, pilgrims depart towardsMakkah to participate in the Hajj rituals. 5 kmto the east of the holy city of Makkah lies thetented valley of Mina. More than 100,000tents air conditioned tents provide tempo-rary accommodation to visiting pilgrims. TheTeflon constructed tents are constructed towithstand temperatures of up to 700 degrees

Celsius. Mina is the place where pilgrimsthrow stones, commemorating the practiceof Hadrat Ibrahim, when he stoned the ac-cursed devil, while he was trying to dissuadeHadrat Ibrahim from following the com-mandments of God almighty. The ritual epit-omizes the essence of flushing out all satanicvicissitudes from once life. The stoning of thedevil also represents the repudiation of evilinclinations and temptative elements, cast-ing aside of one’s personal whims and de-sires to attain felicity, piety and Godconsciousness. The stoning of the three devilsis, in essence the clash to trample upon one’sinternal evil inclination (Al Nafs Al Amara)and to subjugate it to the servitude of theAlmighty. The Quran says“Verily, the Nafs incites to evil” Quran 12:53A popular imagery used to describe Nafs isthat of a donkey, or a unruly horse, that mustbe trained and broken, so that eventually itwill bear it’s rider to the goal. low desires; Then surely thegarden, that is their abode”Quran 79:40-41From Mina, the pilgrimsmarch on towards Muzdali-fah, where they spend thewhole night beseechingGod’s forgiveness andmercy. On the next day, the9th of Dhul Hijjah multitudesassemble in the plains ofArafah. The pilgrims spendthe whole day on Arafahsupplicating to Allah to for-give their sins, and beseech-ing him to shower his grace, mercy and affection onthem. This is the Day of Hajj, the clout and supremacy ofIslam dazzles luminously inthe plains of Arafah. Peoplebelonging to diverse cultural, social and ethical back-grounds conglomerate in asingle arena to proclaim thegreatness of the Almighty,The King and the Pauperstand shoulder to shoulderimploring God to embracethem under the covers of hisinfinite mercy. In the valley ofArafah all worldly riches, influ-ence and opulence are laidto dust. The Quran says:-

“Verily, the most honored ofyou in the sight of Allah is themost righteous of you” Quran49:13

The Quran espouses the be-lievers to establish such ami-able bonds of brotherhoodwhich are based on thefoundations of devoutnessand piety. Unlike other bonds(nationalistic, patriotic) etcwhich are superficial, animal-istic, reactive, emotional andcompletely devoid of a realsolution for life affairs, the in-tellectuality of the ideologi-cal bond of Islam unites man

irrespective of their race, na-tionality and other factorswhich are irrelevant when itcomes to bonding on a ide-ological creed. The Quransays

“The Believers are but a sin-gle brotherhood” Quran49:10

Fourteen centuries ago, thebenefactor of Mankind,Prophet Muhammad SAWdelivered his final sermon onthe Mountain of Arafah, alsoknown as Jabal Al Rahmah. At the final juncture of hisprophetic mission, theProphet summarized thequintessence of his propheticmission in a short but elo-quent sermon. As one standsin the plains of Arafah, onecan feel the postulates ofthat articulate sermon rever-berating in the valley. Adher-ing to the true spirit of theQuran, the Prophet set upsuch exemplarary notions ofEquality and Brotherhoodwhich stupefies Human Anal-ogy. An illiterate man, in thedeserts of Arabia, in a tribal-istic and oligarchic societyenumerates such divine val-ues, which were adoptedcenturies later by the westernworld. The Prophet said:-“All mankind is from Adamand Eve, an Arab has no su-periority over a non Arab, nordoes a non Arab hold any su-periority over an Arab. AWhite skinned person holdsno distinction over a darkskinned person, nor is a darkskinned person superior to awhite skinned person exceptby piety. Know that allmankind comes from Adamand Eve, and Adam was cre-ated of Dust”

It is a pity that Muslims all overthe world have completelyforfeited the Quranic valuesof Equality, Fraternity, Toler-ance, Trust and Mutual Co-operation and have chosenshoddy ways to fulfill theircapricious whims, and useQuranic analogy for theirpusillanimous actions. Sunnisaccuse Shias of perpetratingheresy in religion, on the splitside Shias charge Sunnis onUsurping their rights andamending the Quran to de-prive the Shia community oftheir rights. Why don’t we ac-cept the Quran as a media-tor and follow it’s teachings

“Come to common terms asbetween us and you; that weworship none but Allah, andwe associate no partnerswith him” Quran 3:64

The next day, 10th Dhul Hijjahalso connoted as Al Yaum AlNahr (The day of the GreatSacrifice) marks the festivalof Eid Al Adha. People offerthe Eid prayers in congrega-tion and carry out the sacrifi-cial ritual commemoratingthe Prophet’s Ibraheem’s will-ingness to sacrifice his youngand only firstborn son in com-pliance to a command fromGod. This momentous ritual isa tribute to the unflinchingfaith, selfless devotion andresolute conviction ofProphet Ibraheem towardsthe Almighty. The Quran nar-rates this illustrious event in amelancholic symphony“And when (his son) was oldenough to walk and workwith him (Ibraheem) said : Omy dear son, I see in visionthat I offer you in sacrifice:Now see what is your view!(The Son said) O my Father!

Do what you are com-manded if Allah wills you willfind me practicing patienceand steadfastness! So whenthey both submitted and hethrew him down upon hisforehead, we called out tohim saying: O Ibraheem! Youhave indeed fulfilled the vi-sion; surely thus do we reward those who do good. Most surely this was a mani-fest trial. And we ransomedhim with a momentous sacri-fice. And we perpetuated(praise) to him among thelater generations. Peaceand Salutations to Ibra-heem!!” Quran 37:102-110God does not stand in needof anyone to sacrifice alamb in his name. He is AlHayy (Everliving) and AlQayyum (Self sufficient). Ithas nothing to do with aton-ing for one’s sins or using theblood as a medium to washour sins. The Quran says:-

“Never does their flesh reachAllah, and neither theirblood; it is only your God-Consciousness that reaches him” Quran 22:37

The festival signifies selflessand unconditional adher-ence to the divine com-mandments. It alsoepitomizes the spirit of forsak-ing heavenly bounties in theway of God with unduly sub-mission. It is a ritual which pro-grammes the human soul toexercise purity of faith andconscience, leave no stoneunturned and submit to Godwith willing acquiescence. The pilgrims shave off theirheads to enumerate a newbeginning. A perfect Hajj, performed with the deepestconviction and unflinchingfaith in God Almighty clearsthe slate of past deeds. Organisers illegally use House of Representa-tives seal for promotional material, reportedto the ethics committee for fraud Washington: The Coalition Against Genocide(CAG) on Sunday said in a statement thatNarendra Modi's purported event on "Capi-tol Hill" is a fraud and an exercise in illegaland criminal misuse of US Government sym-bols.

"After five days of phone calls, letters, docu-ment verification and hundreds of emails be-tween CAG activists and Congressionalstaffers, several members of the House Re-publican Conference whose names hadbeen used to endorse the Modi event havewashed their hands off the event", CAG saidin a statement.

First reports in the media also suggest that thecongresspersons were unaware that theirnames or the Congressional seal were beingused to promote the Modi event and thatthe fraud had been enacted by a an organ-ization called National Indian American Pub-lic Policy Institute (NIAPPI) and one Mr.Shalabh Kumar, a person with a checkeredhistory of ethics violations, it said.CAG has learned that the office of Rep.Cathy McMorris Rodgers has issued a "Ceaseand Desist" order to Shalabh 'Shalli' Kumarand NIAPPI, who are organizers of the eventoutside Capitol Hill, where Modi is expectedto appear via satellite video on November19, 2013, it said."The promotional material for the event hasillegally used the seal of the House of Repres-entatives as well as names and pictures ofthe top Republican Leadership without theirconsent. It purports to have the support andendorsement of the House Republican Con-ference, a top Republican body chaired byRep. Cathy Rodgers", CAG said. The "Cease and Desist" Notice seeks immedi-

ate cessation of all activities to promote theModi broadcast in the name of Congress-woman Rodgers and the House RepublicanConference. Even as the office of Rep.Rodgers issued the "Cease and Desist", otherRepublicans namely Congressman Sessionsmoved swiftly to put a distance betweenthemselves and the Modi broadcast. In astatement issued by Congressman Sessionsreceived by CAG via email, CongressmanSessions stated clearly:"It has come to my attention that the Na-tional Indian American Public Policy Institute(NIAPPI) recently used my name and imageon an invitation to an event that it is hostingin Washington, DC, on November 19. At nopoint in time did I agree to attend this event, nor did I approve of the use of my name orimage on this invitation."Further, I did not see the invitation until it hadbeen distributed publicly. Had I known thatmy name and image were on this invitationbefore it was distributed, I would have re-quested that they both be removed. Addi-tionally, I have contacted NIAPPI to request

that they remove my name and image fromthis invitation and that they explicitly ask myapproval before using my name or image inany of their materials going forward", U.S.Congressman Pete Sessions (R-TX-32) said.NIAPPI, the key agent behind this misrepre-sentation and fraudulent promotional tac-tics, is a Hindu nationalist front organizationposing as a public policy institute. It is a rest-ing ground for RSS stalwarts like Bhailal Patel. In case of this event, Kumar and companytried to run piggyback on an event titled the"Indian American Meetup" that has nothingto do with NIAPPI, and that is indeed takingplace inside the Capitol Hill building on No-vember 19.The program schedule for this event clearlyshows that neither Modi nor any functionaryof the RSS are scheduled to speak at thisevent. This GOP "meet and greet" event withIndian Americans was projected as a Modipromotional by Shalli Kumar and the NIAPPI."It is typical RSS obfuscation and manipula-tion," said Biju Matthew of CAG. "They havea long history of fomenting trouble by throw-ing dead cows into temples and dead pigsinto mosques. Now they have thrown theHouse Seal on to a Modi flyer. Old habits diehard, " Matthew added.CAG activists spoke with the offices of Rep.Greg Walden and Rep. Bob Goodlatte seek-ing clarification, since their pictures ap-peared on the flyer. Staffers from both

Congressmen's offices stated categoricallythat they were unaware of the event, or thatthe Congressmen's names and pictures werebeing used without authorization to promoteit, the statement said.CAG has called on the House Ethics Commit-tee to launch an investigation into the fraud-ulent use of the House Seal, and the fakeprojection of GOP support for the event. Ithas also called upon Congresswoman CathyMcMorris Rodgers to expel Shalli Kumar fromthe HRC's Indian American Advisory Board, itsaid."A person who openly resorts to fraud to pro-mote a human rights abuser like NarendraModi should not be representing the IndianAmerican community at the House Republi-can Conference" said Biju Mathew. CAG fur-ther called upon Congresswoman Rodgersto publicly disassociate herself from NIAPPIand Modi. The Coalition Against Genocide includes adiverse spectrum of organizations and indi-viduals in the United States and Canada thathave come together in response to the Gu-jarat genocide to demand accountabilityand justice. The coalition had effectively campaignedagainst Narendra Modi in 2005 to get a USentry ban on him for egregious religious free-dom violations.Source: Ummid.com

When Babita 14, one of the 18 backwardand poor Jharkhand girls who have recentlywon the third place in Spain's Gasteiz Cup,scored the first of the two goals in a promo-tional match at Modern School against ateam comprising of the girls from the hostschool and 35 countries, she was elated,"Hum world champion banna chahtey hein!"(We want to be the world champions)The disadvantaged Jharkhand girls' footballteam "Yuva" hailing from the backward andtribal were here in Delhi staying at ModernSchool for playing this football match with aninternational students' team consisting from35 schools (from China, USA, Canada,Switzerland, Germany, Pakistan, Italy, France,Dubai etc) as part of the social interactionprogram of Community Development Lead-ership Summit (CDLS) at the school. In a well contested match, the underprivi-leged girls won the match 2-0 with Babita Ku-mari and Sunita Kumari (right out) scoring agoal apiece in each of the two halves. Whathas captured the imagination of the people, however, is not this victory or the third posi-tion in Spain but their fight against official ap-athy and their fight against patriarchy and

societal odds.Of their struggle to come up and make thedent felt on the sporting fabric of India,Sunita Kumari (goalkeeper) stated that in thebeginning, the state officials, rather thanguiding and helping them, treated them aschattel and maid servants asking them toscavenge the floor, dust their houses and of-fices besides trying to outrage their modestyeven. Their rise to glory was like walking on arazor sharp hill or a tweezers grip. This is done to promote the spirit of 'unity andinclusion through sport' under the aegis ofModern School and "UMMEED" a non-profitNGO started by a class 12 student AvaneeSingh.Praising the technical expertise of theseJharkhand girls, Lata Vaidyanathan, princi-pal, Modern School, stated, "For many peo-ple–most especially, adolescent girls–teamshave the potential to offer a network of pos-itive role models, a consistent group offriends, and the opportunity to build confi-dence in themselves."Franz Gastler, an American who first came toJharkhand to teach English, is the founder ofNGO Yuwa. lage of Hutup, outside statecapital Ranchi, Franz askedone of the girls what she likedto do in her free time. Shesaid she liked to play footballand wished she could playon a team. Franz told herthat if she found some othergirls who wanted to play, hecould lead practices for

them. He saw the enthusi-asm and dedication of thegirls and recognized that afootball team could be theperfect platform upon whichto promote education andinstill confidence," saysThompson. However, Franz laments thatthese girls can't practise withother girls teams in Jhark-hand as there aren't any inthat state. At the most, theyplay against boys' teams. Ex-cept the cities like Delhi,

Goa, Kolkata and Mumbai, women's soccer hasn't reallytaken shape in India. Re-cently, Franz also acceptedthe national award for BestPromotion of Sports in Educa-tion from Milkha Singh andRanbir Kapoor.According to Rose Thomp-son, director of Yuwa, thegirls' parents are now proudof their achievements. But ithas been a rocky ride. Jhark-hand, the girls' home state, isconsidered the number onetrafficking centre in Asia. Girlshere are married as early as15 years of age, and spendmost of their time doinghousehold chores. The boysof the village are believed totry to take over the groundwhere these girls practise, even though they may havenever played anything there

before.Adds Thompson, "Girls play-ing football was sacrilege!"When these girls went to gettheir birth certificate, re-quired for their visa to play inSpain, they were reportedlyslapped by the panchayatmembers. They are only saidto have got the visa thanksto Gastler. Most of the girls' parents areeither farmers or labourers. When asked how the causeof these girls can be uplifted,Franz stated that NGOs like"Ummeed" in Delhi and somecorporate houses have beenkind enough to take care ofthe girls till now but need ofthe hour is that the govern-ment must come up to helpthese hapless and forlorngirls.

I By Prof. V.K. Tripathi I

Ever since RSS/ BJPhave nominated NarendraModi their prime ministerialcandidate, media is givinghim round the clock cover-age. The educated and af-fluent elite are enthralled. Inriot torn Western UP, as also inother parts of the country, heis the hero of riot-mongeringaggressive elements. It hasemboldened him and hissupporters to vociferously at-tack the founding fathers ofthe nation, particularlyGandhi and Nehru, the iconsof freedom and secularism.

By quoting historicalfacts wrong, Modi not onlydisplays ignorance about his-tory but reveals scant under-standing of historicalperspective and historicalforces. How could he blameGandhi, Nehru or Congressfor partition? Can he not rec-ognize the forces who un-leashed the reign of terrorand bloodbath, createdconditions of civil war andconnived with the colonialpower – the Muslim League,RSS, Hindu Mahasabha, theRajas and Nawabs, and theclasses who supportedthem?

Gandhi was the archi-tect of satyagraha (the doc-trine of nonviolent struggle)and originator and leader ofmass movement for free-dom. Masses all over the

country, in all regions, all reli-gions, all languages, allcastes, and all communities, barring a sectarian fringe, accorded him highest loveand respect, followed his dic-

tates for political actionagainst the mighty colonialpower, and treated him liketheir father. Subhash Chan-dra Bose only echoed masssentiment when he calledhim father of the nation. Ra-bindra Nath Tagore calledhim the Mahatma. Gandhistood against communalstorm with unprecedentedsensitivity and courage andfaced assassin’s bullets. UNAssembly rightly called himthe greatest Indian after Bud-dha.

It is insulting to say Gandhi

handpicked Nehru overPatel for prime minister shipagainst the wishes of thecongressmen or masses.Nineteen forty onwards, when Maulana Abul KalamAzad was the Congress Pres-ident, Patel was the man ofparty organization; henceheads of several CongressCommittees were either ap-pointed by him or had closerlinks with him. But that wasthe period when party elec-tions were hardly held asCongress was engaged inthe do or die phase of free-dom struggle. There is no ev-idence of power strugglebetween Nehru and Patel,no evidence of Nehru com-manding less support of Con-gressmen or less popularityamong the masses. In 1949,in a letter Patel himself ac-knowledged Nehru as thehero of the masses. Indeedthey had different dimen-sions of personality but thesewere complementary toeach other. Nehru had a vi-sion of economic policy, for-eign policy andscience-technology policy,in part at variance with thatof Gandhi, but Patel or otherCongress leaders did not op-pose it. From peoples’ per-spective, there is alwaysscope for criticism of policyand implementation strat-egy, but basing it on person-ality is mischievous. It canonly revive sectarian passionsand render people vulnera-ble to more severe exploita-tion.
