    This

    historic congre

    gation

    looked

    back at

    their

    forty

    years

    of

    history

    in

    a

    special Satur

    day

    night

    service

    and Love

    Feast. Sunday

    services

    were de

    voted

    to

    looking

    forward from

    1 98 8 t o 2 0 0 0 .

    1948 The

    f i r s t m em b e r o f t h e

    congregation,

    Mikolaj Kobus ,

    is

    now

    an

    honorary elder.

    He

    had

    been baptized

    in

    eastern Poland

    a n d

    moved

    to

    W a r s a w

    t o

    become

    the caretaker

    of a

    building

    that be

    came

    th e property of the Church of

    Chris t through the efforts of Kon-

    stantin Jarosevich,

    a

    missionary.

    a n d

    preachers were

    a rr es ted in

    1950

    by th e communist authorities, th e

    church

    meeting place was

    sealed.

    Some

    m a n used

    a

    ladder

    to b r e a k

    into th e

    chapel

    and began prepar

    ing himself

    a p lace to live.

    The

    po

    lice

    w e r e

    cal led

    a n d

    t h e

    m a n

    w a s

    taken

    away . Two days

    l at er t he

    man returned

    to

    ge t

    hi s

    ladder

    The widow

    of

    founding

    minister

    George

    Sacewicz

    told

    of

    th e

    diffi

    culties of reconstructing th e build

    ing which

    had

    been

    40

    percent

    de

    stroyed in th e war. Her

    husband

    somehow

    h a d

    a n A m er ic an a ut o

    mobile, one

    of th e best in all of

    Poland. We

    tried selling t he c ar

    to raise money for the building.

    E v e n t h e f i r s t P o l i s h P r e s i d e n t

    after

    the war didn' t have enough

    money

    to buy

    it .

    The

    Director

    of

    th e

    Secret

    Police

    bought

    it.

    One evening in

    September,

    1950, my h usb an d an d a

    few

    o ther s were sitting in our

    home.

    The

    doorbell rang. Two men

    asked

    if my

    husband was home.

    I

    sensed

    something

    was wrong, but I le t

    them in. They

    were

    Secret Police.

    For three

    days

    th e

    Secret Police

    s tayed in the

    Sacewicz home.

    They

    detained eve ry p er son who

    came

    to th e home.

    She

    gave th e

    police

    money

    to go and buy food

    for

    everyone.

    Mrs.

    Sacewicz

    went

    to

    th e

    police

    station

    frequently

    to

    ask

    about

    her

    husband,

    but no

    one would tell

    her

    an5rthing.

    The secret

    police inter-

    rogated

    her

    almost

    daily. Her

    home, th e chapel, and

    other

    apart

    m e n ts w er e s e a rc he d o v e r

    a n d

    over.

    Threats

    were

    made. Finally

    s he l ea rn ed

    w a s .

    memory

    a n d

    could

    r e c i t e

    Bible

    v e r s e s a n d

    songs.

    A

    Catholic priest and

    he

    were abl e to

    worship

    and

    pray

    to

    gether. After

    a

    time

    my

    husband

    w a s r e le a se d a nd r ec o ve re d f ro m

    th e prison experience.

    He

    never

    lacked

    energy

    for God s work.

    George Bajenski,

    missionary

    Canada, became a

    C h r i s ti a n a t

    P u l a w s k a

    S t r e e t

    chu rch. He was

    present

    fo r the

    special services. His father,

    Paul,

    wa s an early member.

    George

    bered it

    in

    those early days. I t was

    i n 1953

    t h a t

    t h e C h u r c h

    o f

    C h r i s t

    u nited w ith

    Polish

    Brethren ,

    Evangelical

    Christians, and some

    P e n t e c o s t a l s

    to

    form

    th e U n i t e d

    Evangel ical Church . This union

    gave

    strength to th e

    small non-

    Catholic congregations

    tha t ex

    i s t e d i n a

    c o m m u n i s t d o m i n a t e d

    country that s ti ll was th e most Ro

    m a n

    C a t h o l i c

    n a t i o n

    i n t he

    w o r l d .

    I n t h e

    1 9 6 0 s

    s e r i o u s

    c o n f l i c t

    arose among

    the

    leaders. For

    a

    time

    th e

    congregation

    hung

    by

    a

    thread. Harmony was restored

    and t he founding minister, George

    Sacewicz, con ti nued as minister.

    George Bajenski returned to his

    home congrega tion

    in 1965

    and

    led

    in developing an

    aggressive

    youth

    program,

    including a youth

    c am p .

    Andrew

    Bajenski, grandson

    of

    Paul and

    nephew of George, be

    came minister of th e congregation

    in 1981.

    He was a

    protege of

    brother Sacewicz, who every Sun

    day until his death

    last

    year sat on

    a

    chair

    a t

    the

    front

    of

    the

    church

    to

    encourage

    the

    young minister.

    Andrew gave l eadership to

    th e

    church through

    th e

    food crisis

    in

    Poland

    in

    th e

    early

    1980's. He

    ove r s aw

    th e d is t r ib ut io n

    o f

    $74,000,000 worth of food and

    medicine sent to Poland by

    th e In

    t e rna t iona l

    Aid

    and

    o t he r

    benevo

    lent

    agencies.

    1988The congregation now has

    300

    members a nd h as es tabl ished

    three preaching

    points for

    the

    probable establishment

    of

    new

    congregations.

    Attendance

    is

    about

    200 which fil ls

    the

    meeting

    area

    to

    overflowing. An

    apart

    ment

    adjoining

    the

    chapel

    has

    been purchased

    for

    the

    congrega

    tion

    by

    TCM International

    to en

    able enlargement

    of

    th e

    chapel. A

    Bible bookstore is also

    operated

    by

    th e congregation.

    In

    addition to

    th e

    gations

    and

    friends across Poland

    that

    sent greetings

    for

    the anni

    versary

    service, telegrams

    The Sunday service was held in

    a

    rented

    building to accommodate

    th e crowd. Cu r r e n t

    choir members presented special

    music,

    as did

    George

    Bajenski.

    Gene Dul in , who was

    special

    speaker, challenged

    th e

    congrega

    tion

    to move forward together.

    Ijooking

    said,

    recall our

    roots,

    honor

    the

    faith,

    and

    leam

    from

    th e

    good

    and th e ba d experi

    ences.

    However,

    it

    is

    also danger

    ous

    because

    we can become self-

    satisfied, thinking we have

    a rr iv e d. O r we can become

    fearful

    when

    we

    compare ou r own

    weak

    nesses wi th

    th e

    fai th of

    our forefa

    study groups al l across Warsaw,

    and

    development of leadership.

    a

    ten-point declaration of f ai th and

    commitment.

    The congregation re

    sponded t o each declarat ion by

    saying,

    tended all classes together and joined

    night . The other day, for instance, I was deeply involved

    in

    my

    thoughts,

    struggling

    somewhat with the same

    thinking

    concerning

    Ben's

    death, when in the

    midst of

    this struggle, a t

    the exact r ight moment

    over the

    radio

    wave I heard

    the

    familiar voice of

    George

    Beverly Shea singing,

    Have Thine own way

    Lord,

    have

    Thine

    own way. Thou a r t the

    Potter ,

    I am the clay. Mold me and make me

    after

    Thy

    will ,

    while I

    am waiting,

    yielded

    and st i l l .

    I knew

    those

    words were

    for me
