Until 1989, we were reaching out with the Gospel to the peoples of Central Europe who lived under the oppression of totalitarian governments, but amazingly the Gospel of Christ has no limits, "For it is God's power for salvation to everyone who believes" (Rom. 1:16). This is the prime purpose for GMM's mission activities. With this conviction in mind, we have been able to assist local churches and to establish a strong, well functioning Christian youth camp in each one of these countries. They still require our help, but already the witness for Christ by these local believers is bringing about meaning ful results. During the days of communist rule we preached the Gospel through a network of shortwave stations. Now there are many local stations broadcasting the Gospel message and some of them are still using our programs. One private radio station in Poland was established thanks to GMM's assistance. We thank the Lord for leading us Into 2002 with a new vision of tuming challenges of this troubled changing worid into new victories for Christ. After years of ministry in Central Europe we have learned that God has been there long before we came on the scene, and that the Church of our Lord Jesus Christ, although sep arated today by space, culture and traditions, is one. As long as we live down here below, we need each other. We can help each other and we learn one from another. This is even one reason why this year we are adding the follow ing sentence to GMM's mission statement: "We work with churches in North America, providing unique opportunities for networking with church es in Central Europe to enrich the lives of all involved." Through this we believe that we are follow ing the example of the greatest missionary, the apostle Paul, who wrote to believers in Rome these words: "I long to visit you so that I can impart to you the faith that will help your church to grow strong in the Lord. Then too I need your help for I want not only to share my faith with you but also to be encouraged. Each of us will be a blessing to each other" (Rom. 1:11-12 LB). JANUARY - FEBRUARY 2002

    A Blessing To Each Other

Twenty-five years have passed since GMIVI' began proclaiming Christ's unchanging message in our constantly changing world. • Colette (center) and Jay (right of center) withPolish Directors of Graceland Ministry

We are happy to introduce you to this uniqueform of evangelistic outreach of GracelandMinistry in Poland.

As we mentioned on the front page of thisnewsletter, these fine Canadian ladies, ColetteLaden and Jay Bowyer, are giving leadership tothis creative program of teaching English whileusing the Bible as a textbook. We asked them toshare a few thoughts and this is what theywrote:

Graceland English Training was born out ofa passion to JUST DO IT! Serving Christ andthe people of Poland, Graceland is a ministrybased on the strong need for English Languagetraining.

As Central and Eastern European countriescontinue to emerge from the stronghold of communism and compete in the Global Economy, adults and teens alike need English to do theirjobs, complete their education and communicate in this high tech world. Secular languageschools are popping up all over these countries, but none of them carry the message of hopethat is needed alongside the message of "success" that is proclaimed in an increasingly"Western" mindset. JUST DO IT!

January 2002 is the beginning of the 7'^ ^semester of JUST DOING IT! for Colette Ladanand Jay Bowyer and their team. Enrollment is atan all-time high and student morale is stronger

than ever. Students are steeped in a ratherheavy tradition-bound religious system andoften know nothing of the freedom and hopethat Jesus Christ can bring to their lives. As theylearn English, they also engage in discussionsover Bible passages, and life application ofthese passages. Day by day changes can beseen and heard as students talk about needingto develop their relationships with God and theirfamilies. They talk about needing to changetheir views on the world and they struggle with"doing what is right" in a society that encourages survival at any cost. All this is as a resultof JUST DOING IT! - sharing the transformingmessage of the Gospel.

So what about you? Will you JUST DO IT?Graceland needs committed followers of Christto come:

    Short-term (2 weeks to 1 month) Medium-term (1 month to 1 year) Long-term {1 year or longer)

Just Doing What? teaching in a classroom staffing the coffee house-the Solid Rock

Cafe (making coffee and tea and buildingrelationships with the students)

tutoring one-on-one facilitating workshops and topical discus

sions (business, crafts, sports, cooking,Bible studies and more)

administration and office duties building and maintenanceCan I JUST DO IT! at home? Absolutely,

Graceland needs prayer warriors and thosewho would give financially too. An aggressiveplan to open more schools is in progress. Prayfor more workers and the finances to make ithappen and then give as you are able.

  • My Testimony(by Adam Szumorek)

If life is like a book full of stories, God mademine a very interesting one. He blessed mebeyond my expectations, brought me to placesI had never thought of, and gave me opportunities that I had never dreamed of before.

My story began simply when, as a ten-yearold boy, I received Jesus Christ as my personalSavior. This decision was the beginning of agreat adventure with God. As a teenager Idreamed about going to a Bible school, andGod opened a door.

Now, I am starting my last semester atLincoln Christian Seminary where I am pursuingmy Master of Arts in preaching. I am working onmy thesis on the subject of preaching from OldTestament narratives. I would like to make itavailable as resource material for Polish pastorsand preachers.

I am well aware of the fact that this comingspring will close one chapter of my life and willopen another one. I will be graduating andreturning to Poland to my home church inOlsztyn where I am going to be involved in apreaching and teaching ministry. I want todevelop a church teaching program throughsmall groups. However, my desires of ministrygo beyond my home church. I want to publishmy thesis on preaching from Old Testament narratives since this issue has not been specifical

ly addressed by anyone in my home country. Myultimate goal, however, is to become a Bibleinstructor and help young Polish preachers toprepare for ministry by teaching them the principles of Biblical interpretation and preaching. Mydesire is to equip them with knowledge andskills, which will enable them to interpret God'sWord responsibly and apply it effectively.

Apart from teaching at a college level, Iwould like to organize local workshops and conferences for pastors who are already in ministryto assist them in sharpening their preachingskills. These are my long-term plans, but inorder to make them come true and be a goodteacher I have to be a good student first. Ibelieve strongly in lifelong learning, so after Ireturn to Poland I would like to take some part-time correspondence courses to pursue aMaster of Divinity degree. In this way I will beable to stay involved in my ministry and grow asa teacher.

My ultimate goal is to get a Doctor ofMinistry degree, which by definition is a blend oftheory and practice, and it is to be done withinthe context of ministry. 1 am aware of the factthat some of these dreams and ideas areimmense and, quite frankly, at this point I haveno idea how I am going to pay for all of it:

publication of my thesis in book form sothat it becomes available to all

providing resources for small groups ministry

payment for some of my living expensesBut I also know that God is the one who

writes each chapter of our lives. So, if life is likea book full of stories, I cannot wait to see whatis in the next chapter of my life.

Through funds made available to GMM'sBenjamin Bajenski Memorial Fund, we are ableto assist several Bible college students fromEurope who are preparing for Christian ministry. We are most grateful to all who send in suchdesignated contributions and by this meansinvest in the lives, further education and futureministries of these future leaders In the Church.

  • Visiting Our Coworiters During January

During the first weeks of January I (GeorgeRepetski) had the privilege of visiting some ofour coworkers in Ukraine and Poland. My firststop was in Ukraine, where the believersadhere to the celebration of Christmas according to the Orthodox calender (January and8th).

On this occasion they invited children toattend a special program in the town of Turyisk.Approximately 40 came, some with their parents, some with their grandparents. Most ofthese children came from non-believing homes.Already a few of them had been attendingSunday School. Young people from a neighboring church presented a special time of gamesand skits for the children, handed out gift packages and told them the "reason for the season."Jesus' birth is more than a traditional celebration. It reminds us of why Jesus came^toofferforgiveness and a way back to God. Such anoutreach creates an interest in the Gospel message not only for the children, but also for theirparents, who with time start attending and eventually become believers.

I also visited our coworkers in Ciechanow,Poland. This is the home of the "base" churchthat is assisting in establishing six new congregations in communities around Ciechanowitself. The work is progressing and already during 2001 there have been several baptisms inthese new churches. Each congregation is stillsmall, but already after two years of ministrynew people have started to attend services andbecome believers.

In one community, Pultusk, the minister,Marcin, is experiencing difficulties. He was toldthat a religious leader of a major church groupspecifically singled him out by name and told his

parishioners not to attend anything that hisgroup sponsors. Recently a group of youngmen saw him on the street and threatened tobeat him. Marcin told them they could go ahead, but as they would be doing this he would prayfor them. They dropped the idea. In spite ofsuch difficulties, our coworkers press on.

Let us remember to pray for such situations. We thank the Lord for victories won and lookforward to encouraging and assisting suchbrothers in the work of the Lord.

    "BLESSED TO BE IN TORONTO..."

What a blessing it was for me to visit thebeautiful country of Canada, February 22-24.This was my fifth trip to Canada but my first tripto the province of Ontario and the city of Torontoand I found both to be quite impressive. Myimpressions are not just based on the beauty ofCanada and its cities but rather on the beauty ofthe people who live there-especially those "ofwhom the whole family in heaven and earth isnamed" (Eph. 3:15).

As founder and director of POEM (Peace onEarth Ministries) and editor of ONE BODYmag-azine, I have a special interest in seeing God'speople working together as one. Therefore, when I was approached last year by GeorgeBajenski and Rod Huron to attend the 26thannual meeting of the members, friends, anddirectors of Global Missionary Ministries, I washappy to accept, it has been my pleasure in thepast to work alongside both men in CentralEurope.

I strongly believe in GMM's primary mission:"To proclaim Christ's unchanging message ofsalvation to the people of post-communistCentral Europe." When I was about 12 yearsold, God placed the peoples of that particularpart of the world on my heart and through ourministry and magazine Evelyn and I have beenable to network with ministries like GMM inPoland, Russia and Belarus.

At the Friday night meeting it was a pleasureto hear first-hand reports of what God is doingin Poland by Piotr Karel. When I first visitedPoland in 1990, his church was the first churchwhere I preached. It was also thrilling to hearreports from students Luke and MarisaBajenski, Ruben Karel, John and Amanda

    VOLUME 25, NO. 2

Barczuk, Adam Szumorek, Samuel Chojnacki, and Dr. Jeff and Amy Ponke. I was able to personally visit with some of them and am tremendously impressed with their vision and zeal foradvancing the kingdom of God. I believe that allof them were touched by the life and death ofBenjamin Bajenski. The aid they are receivingfrom the special fund set up in Benjamin's namewill reap dividends in the future.

On Saturday morning I was honored to meetGeorge Repetski for the first time. We are nearly the same age and share a love for communicating God's message through the printedpage. The way the Canadian and Americanboards of GMM work as one was most encouraging. It was indeed an honor to be added tothe American Board of Directors. Several of usenjoyed an evening meal together.

Sunday morning I was invited by GrantMacDonald, minister of the Keele StreetChristian Church, to present the work of POEMto a combined Sunday School hour. During theworship hour I preached from Gal. 3:26,"Miracle on Keele Street." It was a joy to seepeople from 20 nations gathered as one in this200-member congregation. It was truly a pictureof the cosmic church in Revelation 7:9-10.

George and Vera Bajenski know of my special love and appreciation for the great Russianreformer, Ivan S. Prokhanov (1869-1935).POEM has published his autobiography. In theCauldron of Russia, in both Russian andEnglish. The March 10 issue of ChristianStandard carries the first of a two-part article Ihave written about him, "The Man Who NeverSlept." In their home I saw a lovely painting ofhim. It reminded me that Prokhanov was in

    MARCH -APRIL 2002

  • Toronto, raising funds for the work of evangelical Christians in Russia, when Stalin banishedhim.

Networking with GMIVI will enable us to double our efforts to "proclaim Christ's unchangingmessage of salvation to the people of post-communist Central Europe." Prokhanov's dream ofa spiritual revolution will never die. Nor willChrist's prayer for unity (John 17:20-21). To

gether, we will work for Christian unity and worldevangelism.

Did I receive the 'Toronto Blessing" while inCanada? No. But I was surely blessed to be inToronto-to see and hear first-hand the wonderful work that this ministry is accomplishing to thesalvation of souls and the glory of God!

    An Evening to Remember

GMM traditionally holds its Annual Boards of Directors' Meeting {Canadian and American simultaneously) at the beginning of each new calendar year. This year GMM's Annual Meeting took place onFebruary 23 in Mississauga, Ontario. Prior to that, on February 22, GMM hosted an evening for friendsand supporters living in the Toronto area and presented a program of God's blessings over the pastyear's work. We were blessed to have several Bible college students from Poland and Canada withus, each of them presently studying in some institution in the USA or Canada. Opportunity was givento the students to tell their story of howthe Lord led them to this point in their lives, and what they aretrusting God for in their future ministries. It was thrilling to hear each person's unique testimony ofGod's guidance and his/her seeking to know the Lord's will for their life. Below you will find the pictures of these students. We present them to you so that you can pray with them that the Lord wouldguide each one to find His chosen place of service.

Also present was a special friend that the Lord in a very unexpected way brought into the life ofGMM. Her name is Patricia Ing. Patricia has contributed significantly to the Benjamin BajenskiMemorial Fund that functions as a fund for helping students such as the ones that came to share withus during the evening of February 22. During the course of the evening Phil Dempster, Secretary ofGMM's Canadian Board of Directors, presented Patricia a Certificate of Appreciation for the part thatshe has played in assisting aspiring students from Poland and other countries, as they have studiedand are now studying for Christian ministry.

Following the meeting many of those who attended expressed to the staff of GMM how informativeand inspiring the evening was.

For all of this we thank the Lord!

Brent Williams leads in prayerover young students from Poland

Most of the Polish students that ware present with us during the evening of February 22came for part of GMM Boards of Directors'Meeting the following morning. A letter ofencouragement was read to them from AndrewBajenski, minister of the Christian FellowshipChurch in Warsaw, Poland. This was followedby a time of special prayer for the students thatwas offered up by Brent Williams who serves onGMM's Canadian Board of Directors. He askedthat the Lord not only bless this group of futureChristian workers, but that He would specifically lead each one to God's chosen place forthem. Members of both the Canadian andAmerican Boards of Directors stood around thestudents, having laid their hands on them, asBrent expressed the prayer of blessing over thisspecial group of young people. It was a touching moment for all of us. Let us all be in prayerfor them so that they will discover God's uniqueplace for them in serving Him and building upthe Church wherever that may be-in Poland orelsewhere.

    THE FULL BIBLE IN BELARUSIAN

Very few people in the USA and Canadaknow about Belarus. Of course, for those of youwho have been receiving "The Crier" for sometime, the country of Belarus probably is nostranger to you. We have coworkers in thatcountry about whom we write from time to time.Yet the vast majority of North Americans, whenasked if they've ever heard ofBelarus, usually reply; "No!" Mindyou, during the last Winter fOlympics Belarus came to the fore- ^ground as having a fairly good ice dhockey team. For an upstart teamthey did not do too badly and manysports fans all of a sudden heardthat there is a country called _Belarus. This land Is sandwiched ^between Poland to the West andRussia to the East and exists as aseparate country with its own language and culture.

Although the Belarusian Ian- ^guage is recognized as one of theofficial languages of Belarus, it isdominated today by the Russian language, which is also officially deemed as an official language of the country. In fact, Russian today isthe main language in the political, social andeconomic life of the Belarusian people. Yet inthe countryside and villages of Belarus you willhear Belarusian. There are definite historicaland contemporary reasons for this situation butwe will not discuss them here. In spite of thisreality, there is a significant minority in Belarus

battling for the cause of the Belarusian language, culture and nationhood. Such peopleprefer to read literature in their mother tongueinstead of other languages such as Russian. Inrecent years there have been attempts to returnthe Belarusian language to a higher level ofusage but have been met with limited success.

Nevertheless, out of all of thiscomes the fact that many Belaru-

% sians greatly desire to see the8^ Bible in their own language,j, In the late 1920's and 1930's aI translation of the New Testament

in Belarusian was done with thehelp of some evangelicals andBelarusian intelligentsia. The

^ British and Foreign Bible Societyprinted the resultant translation

, and distributed it where it was possible. In the mid-1980's GlobalMissionary Ministries ordered areprint of that translation and had it

distributed in Belarus and Poland.Since that time a professional

translator and writer, Vasil Syomukha, acceptedthe challenge of preparing a contemporarytranslation of the New Testament. GMM playeda key role in producing his translation by completing the typeset for it. We also helped in editing the text. This translation was eventuallypublished in the mid-1990's. Many ethnically-minded Belarusians appreciated it and havebeen using it as their main source for preachingand writing of Christian articles. Since then Vasil

  • Syomukha completed the translation of the OldTestament and GMM again prepared the typeset for the translation. Last year we were able tohand over all computer files containing thenewly translated Bible to the translator in Minsk. He reread it and added final corrections to thetext. During the month of April the completedfiles were submitted to a publishing house inMinsk for printing, and as we write this article, the full Belarusian Bible is being printed. Itshould be ready for distribution shortly forwhich we praise the Lord!

From the outset Christians have been convinced that the Holy Scriptures need to betranslated Into every language so that every

people group could read, hear and understandthe Bible's message in their own native tongue. Why? Because for each person his or her nativetongue is the language of the heart. It is whatbest communicates to the individual. Thus, weare pleased to see the coming to fruition of yetanother translation of Scripture in theBelarusian language. Please pray that thistranslation will find its way into the hands ofBelaruslans who will read It, be touched by itsmessage, accept salvation through faith andobedience to Jesus Christ and find it to be theirmain source for Christian living. A special thankyou to all of our supporters who prayed with usconcerning this matter.

Pc" SUMMER - OPPORTUNITIES FOR EVANGELISM Summer presents our

coworkers in Central Europe many good opportunities to evangelize. This takes the form ofconducting special camps for youth, althoughother forums are used such as special evangelistic meetings in villages and places wherethere are no churches. Global MissionaryMinistries will again support various camp outreach ministries and would like to inform youabout them so that you can be in prayer andsupport them financially, as the Lord leads you.

, L One ongoing camp is that of CampChristian In Ostroda, Poland. Again

g this year a full summer program hasbeen planned for young people that

will come from all parts of Poland. GMM hassupported this work for many years and willcontinue to do so. This camp will have sessionsfor young people from the youngest agethrough to late teenage years. But it will alsoinclude adult programs.

One special outreach at Ostroda will be runat the end of May for seniors. There will be twogroups simultaneously in attendanceonegroup of Polish senior citizens and a group ofRussian seniors from St. Petersburg of Jewishdecent. Concerning the latter, our coworker

Kazik Barczuk has made arrangements to havesome 30 seniors travel all the way from St.Petersburg and spend a couple of weeks atOstroda. A good number of these people do notbelieve in Jesus Christ; during the camp theywill be taught about their spiritual heritage fromthe Scriptures showing that Yeshua, as they callJesus, is their true Messiah. In the past this hasresulted in conversions and baptisms. We arepraying for the same this year.

in Ukraine we have been asked by the localchurch in Lutsk to assist them in organizing andconducting a camp from the government-operated orphanage of school-aged children. Most

    Jewish Senior's Service

  • Oqjhans at camp in Ukraineof these children do not have any religiousupbringing. In the past we assisted in such anoutreach and the church in Lutsk has againrequested our support for such a camp thisyear. In May George Bajenski will visit them todiscuss the matter. We believe that this is aworthwhile cause and would ask you to consider assisting financially in the project. We areconfident that many of these young people willrespond to the call of Christ, accept him asSavior and Lord and will set out on their journeyof faith.

In Belarus GMM will work withthree different summer camp groups. Our coworker Vladimir pastors

Bethany Church in Kobryn and he is planning toconduct a camp for children from his congregation. Many neighborhood children will be invitedfrom the area where the church is located. Theycome from non-believing homes and will hearthe Gospel presented in a way that they mayunderstand it. Vladimir has asked GMM to provide financial support for this outreach and weare convinced that this is a worthy project. Weplan to support Vladimir in this summer ministry.

Also. GMM will assist another camp outreach ministry near the city of Kobryn. PearlCamp, as it is called, brings in children from ailacross Belarus. There will be several sessionsfor younger and older youth throughout thesummer. Many who will be there will not havehad any Christian upbringing or teaching. Theywill be introduced to the Gospel and Jesus

Christ for the first time. In the past many havebecome believers and have become witnessesof Christ to their parents.

Dema, from Good News Church inMinsk, wrote and asked GMM tosponsor a group of their young people

^ for camp at our Polish Ostroda facility. We see this as a great opportunity to help thembut it will require funds to both bring them toOstroda and pay for their stay there. We continue to maintain a close relationship with thischurch and are excited about the outreach thatit has had to young people. The church is madeup of many highly educated young couples andsingles. We believe that by assisting them inaccepting some of their youth at Ostroda, wewill assist them in strengthening their ministry inMinsk.

, In June GMM will help the churchin Salcininkai, Lithuania. In the pastwe have worked closely with Victor

    * who serves as this church's pastor. This year we will again help him in his continualoutreach to the children in the community andtheir parents. It will be a great blessing to havea group of children's workers come fromBeaverton Christian Church (Beaverton,Oregon) to Salcininkai and teach the children. Also, we have arranged for some children'sworkers to come from Bethany Church inKobryn, Belarus, to attend and assist in theteaching load. George Bajenski will coordinate

and be personally involved in this multinationalChristian endeavor.

.L One other opportunity has beenpresented to GMM for involvement. This is an outreach to children in a

hospice near the city of Prague, CzechRepublic. One local evangelical church inPrague learned of this special need and haveconducted outreach in the hospice. They wouldlike to increase their involvement with specialministries to the children and ask for our assistance in the matter. We believe this to be a worthy cause and intend to offer them some financial help. Again, the children in this hospice

"GO AND MAKE DISCIPLES OF ALL NATIONS, BAPTIZING THEM..."

"Go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of theSon and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them toobey everything I have commanded you." (Matt.28:19-20).

Jesus' command to make disciples of allnations and teach them the truths of his Gospelmessage is as relevant today as it was at thetime he spoke these words. He even statedprophetically that the Gospel of God's Kingdomwill be preached to all nations (ethnic peoplegroups) before the consummation of human history (Matt. 24:14).

What constitutes the Gospel message? Itis the wonderful news that God, the Creatorof the universe, came seeking us in hisSon, Jesus. And Jesus taught aboutGod's Kingdom in a way that ibecame comprehensible to / zfeach of us but, more than that, / j,he went further in demonstrat- (ing God's deep love for human ^beings. The sinless One, the Lamb of God,allowed himself to be put to death on a Romancross and thus become the ultimate sacrifice forour sins and rebellion against God. Now whoever seeks the Lord, repents and believes inJesus with an obedient heart, receives forgiveness of sins, the gift of the Holy Spirit and thepromise of eternal life in God's presence forever. This is truly fantastic news to any seekingsoul and is open to everyone who wants to turnto the Lord for salvation. One setting that vividly depicts this truth is seen in the believer'sobedience to baptism.

We, the missionaries and partners of GMM,hold to this Biblical teaching. Whenever such a

happy occasion occurs in congregations withwhich we work in Central and Eastern Europe,we rejoice with them and with Heaven too.

Often the first part of the service takes placeoutdoors, beside some river or lake. People likethis setting since it serves as an opportunity forChristian witness, although some baptisms alsotake place in the baptistry of a church building. The whole congregation comes out to observe;relatives and friends of the candidates are present too. Prior to the act of baptism two or threesermons are given interlaced with the choir'ssinging. Then comes the act of baptism. Usually

the baptismal candidates are asked whether' they have accepted Jesus Christ as Savior

and Lord and do they promise to serve himfor the rest of their lives, to which they

9 . answer in the affirmative and are> baptized. After all have been

\ : baptized the whole congrega-/ \ tion returns to the church for a^ communion service in which thenewly baptized participate for the first time.

Often an "agape" meal follows allowing thenewly baptized give their testimony of how theycame to the Lord. That is always an exhilaratingpart of the service as we hear of how God hasworked in the hearts of people. Opportunity isgiven for older Christians to encourage the converts and give some spiritual advice. Each candidate is given flowers to mark the occasion andperhaps some gift such as a Bible or otherChristian book with the date of their baptismnoted in it. Pictures are taken.

Rejoice with us as we share a few testimonies of newly baptized individuals duringrecent baptisms in Belarus and Poland.

"My name is Galya Kravchenko. I got to thefirst talk about Jesus at Sunday School throughmy close friends. And gradually the theoreticalknowledge became important for my daily living.God made great changes in me first in smallthings and afterwards in more significant matters.

I am a witness of His wonders, and Hisblessings. I've met people who showed mewhat kindness and faithfulness is and I had achance to experience what sincere prayer is.That is the loving God who gave my motherstrength to repent a week before my baptism. My older sister who was opposing me in mychoice just last week repented as well. I amamazed. Praises to the Lord. And my hope is tobe worthy."

"About 4 years ago i read an interestingstory: it spoke of footprints on a beach. Thisstory motivated me to ask two important questions: where am I at this point of my life? and, where I am going?

As I looked at the path that I had traveled, Isaw only one set of footprints and they surelywere mine. They were frequently crossed withthe footprints of other people.

Throughout my life I believed in God. I hadno doubt that He exists and I knew that theremust be something after this life ends.Otherwise, it would be senseless to have livedhere for a number of years and then - nothing.I knew that God existed somewhere, but that'somewhere' for me was only 'here.'

Sometimes I even used to pray and ask God

for something but, on the other hand, I was livedand conducted my life very much as though Hedid not exist. I tried to live a good life accordingto the Ten Commandments. I reasoned thateven though I was not always good God,nonetheless, was a loving God and would stillaccept me because, after all, I was not as badas many others.

However, after reading that short 'footprints'story I became more concerned about my futurelife. I knew that I should have a closer relationwith God, but I did not know how to achieve thatideal. My mind was trained to think logically andcome up with mathematical solutions. However, using this process I could not reach a definitiveanswer to the question of God. So my life continued in a state of indecisiveness.

Then something unusual happened. My wifebecame interested in God. We started discussing subjects that we had never discussedbefore, such as the question of faith. We beganattending Christian services at the WarsawChurch. There I met many friendly people whoopenly talked about God. They seemed to bedifferent and this difference was because theywere connected with the Lord-something that Iwas missing in my life.

In my frustration I started asking questionsand then someone gave me a rather strangepiece of advice: 'Believe and then you willunderstand.' It didn't made sense to me. I started to attend a Bible study group, I listenedattentively to our pastor's teaching and I waitedimpatiently for that moment when I could findthe key that would allow me to understand.

I began asking what eise 1should do in order

    Baptism in Warsaw, Poland

  • to gain this 'grace' that was so often spokenabout. Nothing happened and it seemed all wasin vain, as far as I was concerned. I couldn'tunderstand what all of this meant for me. In myfrustration I started to doubt.

One night, in my desperation, I helplesslycried out to God: 'Lord Jesus, here I am and Iwant You to come to me; my heart waits for you. Please tell me what else I should be doing tohave You accept me.' I did not have to wait longfor an answer Icouldn't sleep that night, so I leftmy apartment and took a long walk in a nearbypark. As I walked, I praised God for His beautiful nature that surrounded me. All of a suddensomething within me caused me to beginsinging songs of praise to Jesus. I was happy. The Lord told me: 'Yes, I will go with you in life'sjourney.'

Now on my life's path there are two sets offootprints-Jesus' and mine. If there is someonewho still doubts as I did, I can also give him thesame advice today: Believe first and then youwill understand." Andrzej

    SUMMER IN CENTRAL EUROPE

Spring and summer are beautiful and upliftingseasons. Such was our experience this

summer while working in Central Europe. Wehave just returned to Canada to attend to mission responsibilities on this side of the ocean, for such is the nature of Global MissionaryMinistrieswe labour on both sides of theocean. Whether here or on there, we truly areall members of one Church, Christ's Body, andwe, members of His Body, need and care foreach other.

Apostle Paul expressed this very thought inhis letter to Roman believers by saying: "I longto visit you so that I can impart to you the faiththat will help your church grow strong in theLord. Then, too, I need your help, for I want notonly to share my faith with you but to be encouraged by yours. Each of us will be a blessing tothe other" (Rom. 1:11-12 LB). We would like toexpress this truth by simply saying:

"We are blessed by helping others.Others are blessed by helping us."

As in previous years, much of this summer'smission activities were dedicated to work withchildren and youth. The article, written by afriend of GMM, on the following pages tell youmore about some of these events. However, Iwould like to add that we were also involved inother outreach ministries such as an adultcamp, which brought together Jewish peoplefrom Poland and Russia, an English-languagecamp, a music and worship team camp, achurch conference, several vacation Bibleschools and even one children's sports "Olympics" event that included several city schools. All of this was done as Gospel outreach. GMMsponsored and helped in conducting camps and

    VOLUME 25, NO. 5

VBS programs in Poland, Ukraine, Belarus,Lithuania and Czech Republic. We organizedand participated in sacred music concerts andevangelistic outreach with a Korean choir, thePolish group, "Missio Musica," and also tookpart in many small Bible groups and regularchurch services.

In all of these activities the Gospel waspreached and we were able to see and feelGod's presence. There were no spectacularstatistics to excite us, but people were savedand Heaven is richer because of this summer'sharvest. We did not experience any great hardships or persecution but we saw and felt thestrong presence of the enemy. People of thesenew European democracies are becomingmore secular and striving for greater personalwealth. Many hold to their religious traditionsand superstitions but are declining morally.Local churches are becoming more involved inthe social life of the community, which in itself isgood, but hopefully they will not compromisethe Gospel message in so doing.

The appearance of religion was visible inmany places. However, one cannot help butwonder whether the matter of people's personalrelationship and walk with God receives dueattention. When we watched the Pope's pilgrimage to his native Poland, where over 5 percentof all the country's population took part in one ofhis services and over 25 percent were followinghis every step over a 4-day period on TVscreens, the thought came to mind, in whom dothese multitudes put their trustin God or inman?

May the Lord help each one of us find theproper answer.

    SHORT-TERM MISSION REPORT

During the month of June we had the privilege of ministering in Poland and Lithuania

with a group of Christian workers fromBeaverton Christian Church in Oregon, and with

    0

    X

    Doing Handicrafts in Lithuania

    Music Camp in Ostroda

John Rekart, former member of this church.John relates his impressions about his summerexperiences with GMM:

Beaverton Christian Church continued itscommitment to missions in Central Europe bysending a team of children's workers to Poland,Lithuania and Belarus to minister in GMM's programs. The team assisted the local ministers byconducting children's programs in Lidzbark andBrynsk, Poland. Directed by George Bajenski, the team utilized puppets, Bible dramas, craftsand some humor to share the Gospel witheager young children. It was wonderful to seethe enthusiasm of this new generation exposedto the Word of God. In Brynsk 65 childrenresponded to the call for an afternoon of fun andlearning. Janell Struckmeier introduced herpuppet, "Scruffy," which enthralled the childrenof all ages. "Scruffy" showed how the Word ofGod grows in their hearts when they listen andaccept Jesus as their Savior.

    Soccer in Ostroda Camp

  • Belarusian Group at Music Camp

Another part of the team's mission was toobserve the local ministers in action as theyshepherded their flocks on a daily basis. In thepast GMM supported this program of evangelism and church planting and continues to do sotoday. We were introduced to several of theseyoung pastors and we were able to watch howthey attended to the needs and spiritual growthof the congregations. One of the greatest joys ofthese short-term mission trips is the blessingswe receive as we see how God is working inthese smail towns and citieshow God usesordinary people to do extraordinary things. Wewere blessed in Mlawa and Dzialdowo by thegenerosity of families who invited us Into theirhomes to share food and answer questions.

Our team's efforts were centered around acongregation of believers under the leadershipof Pastor Viktor in Lithuania. BCC alreadyserved in Salcininkai three times before at theinvitation of GMM and it was exciting to see the

    Turiysk Church Outreach, Ukraine

growth there over the last five years. This congregation blessed us as we served with them.We were happy to see yet another home churchformed in a nearby community. There, too, weshared Bible stories with more than thirty children and eight adults gathered on a cold day ina small living room. The Drama, "Scruffy," andsongs sung in Russian and English werewrapped around personal testimonies of howGod changed our lives and still guides our footsteps. We were blessed by the bright smiles ofthe villagers and youngsters. Then came aweeklong Bible camp with these children ofSalcininkai and Skynemai.

The Bible camp in Salcininkai continuedafter most of the BCC team left Lithuania. Underthe leadership of Pastor Vladimir from Kobryn,

Newly Baptized With Pastor (r.) in PragueBelarus, workers (whom GMM invited andsponsored) then lead the campers by sharingBible lessons that elicited enthusiastic responses to Scriptural questions.

We also saw the efforts of Pastor Viktor inhis Lithuanian prison ministry pay dividends asa man he ministered to is now free and leadinghis family to Christ. Pastor Viktor now has theadded responsibility of a growing home churchin Skynemai. He visits this village several timeseach week for Bible study, prayer and to attendto the needs of the villagers. This traveling backand forth has caused his 16-year old Opel car tobreak down several times. Victor has asked usto pray about this matter and help him, if wecan. He will either have to do serious repair onthe car or purchase another used car to replaceit. (Another vehicle for his use would cost

  • Outreach Among Gypsies, Polandaround $3,000 USD. If you feel led to helpVictor in this need, then please let us know.)

As always, the hardest part of any short-term mission is leaving the new friends God hasput together. We always have to remind the children that people come and go, we all get older,we all change...but God doesn't. He is thesame yesterday, today and tomorrow. Wereminded them that they can rely on Him for alltheir needs.

It is always encouraging to see the growthover a period of time that participation in short-term missions gives us. We listened to a GMMchallenge, given originally in Ostroda in 1996,for the existing churches to plant new churchesand reach people in different cities. Now duringthis summer we were able to observe the successes achieved through God's guidance andthe hard work of the mother church in Ciecha-now.

We saw bold plans for a church building inKobryn, Belarus during our 1996 visit, and thisyear we worshiped with this new church andministered with that church's youth group toanother small church in a nearby village calledLeninski. We celebrated with them the fact thatGod has blessed their efforts to reach new people for Christ. We were unfortunately unable tostay long enough to witness 22 Individuals sur-

render their lives to God in baptism on June 30.Many ordinary people are serving God in

many different ways. Extraordinary results arecommonplace. The Gospel is shared with people of every race, every nation and land. God isglorified in these offerings. If you are ever giventhe opportunity to participate in a GMM-spon-sored short-term mission, do not hesitate. JUSTDO IT! God will bless you beyond humanexpectation. You, and the people you meet, willnever be the same. John Rekart

    GEORGE REPETSKi'S VISIT TO BELARUS

George Repetski will be visiting Belanjs during September. His mission trip will include

spending time with churches that GMM partnerswith in that country. He will obsen/e their present situations and hear of their blessings andchallenges. This helps us determine whereGMM can be of assistance to them. As wereported in a past issue of The Crier, the complete Belarusian Bible was printed and is nowbeing distributed in Belarus. GMM played animportant role in preparing the text. GMM alsocontributes sermon material to the BelarusianDivision of Trans World Radio located in the cityof Brest. George plans to pay a visit to the studio and confer with the staff there.

What a profound question this is, indeed!God inspired Mark Lowery and Buddy Greene to skillfully arrange the words and

We await His second coming with great anticipation.

This year has been especially rich for our family as our firstgrandchild was born, Hannah, to our son, Tim, and his wife,Melissa. This is God's precious gift to them and us too. And whata joy she has been to all of us and many others. Another blessing was to have Lucille's mother, father and sister come to visitus and especially to meet Hannah. It was great to be togetherand rejoice in God's goodness to us. In terms of ministry a wonderful blessing for us was to see the full Belarusian Bible printedin Minsk, Belarus. • Christmas Outreach in Lithuania

A church in Salcininkai, Lithuania with whichGMM works is planning a special program inDecember for children in its city and surrounding villages. They would like to present a smallChristmas gift for each child whom they will contact.

Last year for a similar program they wereanticipating help from one organization but, dueto some logistical problems, this never materialized. Now the local church does not want to disappoint the children in their area. As a result, they are asking for some help. Time is extremely short which means we will not be able to collect some items and send these to them. However, we would like to assist in their evangelistic outreach this Christmas.

The best we can do now is to collect monetary contributions and send this to them so thatthey could purchase the various items locally, put them into packages and hand them out tothe children. The church in Salcininkai is hopingto touch around 100 children and their families.

In the past we have been involved in outreach with this church and its minister, BrotherViktor. In the photograph above you see himpraying with children during their Daily VacationBible School that ran last summer. A gift of five
